Amazon Studios owns the 2017 New York Film Festival with opener “Last Flag Flying” from Richard Linklater, Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck” as the centerpiece gala October 7, and Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” closing it out October 15 — but taking those movies into the crowded fall marketplace and landing Oscar nominations and wins is another matter altogether.
Of course, Amazon has done it before: At Sundance 2016, it paid $10 million for Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester By the Sea” and took the movie (via Roadside Attractions) all the way to six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It won two, for Best Actor Casey Affleck and Lonergan for Best Original Screenplay, and earned a robust $47.6 million domestic.
This year, the deep-pocketed studio challenger — which, unlike Netflix, supports the industry’s established theatrical paradigm, 90-day window and all — has a wider swath of films to compete in multiple awards categories. But there are several key differences this time.

This month’s BAMcinemaFest isn’t just for New York cinephiles, as the annual festival routinely rolls out a slate that includes the year’s best indie offerings, giving many of them a major boost before they roll out theatrical runs. This year is no different, as the Brooklyn-based event will play home to a slew of festival favorites, including a hefty dose of Sundance’s buzziest titles and some big-time SXSW winners and everything in between, most of them bound for a release in a theater (hopefully) near you.

You time is valuable, and so are both services for different reasons.War Machine (Netflix)
Although there may be a competition going on between Amazon and Netflix for subscribers, the truth is that both company’s streaming services are essential for anyone who watches a lot of movies and TV and who wants to be part of the pop culture conversations as they happen.
There’s no denying that Amazon Prime is worth the $99/year, which not only gives you access to many movies but also a good amount of music streaming and digital media access, plus faster shipping for when you actually want some sort of physical product (you can also just get video content for $8.99/month, which oddly means paying more for less).
And Netflix is still a must-have for both its exclusive and nonexclusive content, though depending on one’s usage could be best for sporadic membership rather than continued subscription — now at $120/year...

Few enter the world of independent film expecting to get rich, but it doesn’t hurt to do well. In a Screen Daily interview, longtime producer and indie stalwart Christine Vachon says that “Still Alice” is the biggest success story in the company’s history.

“‘Still Alice’ is the movie that is sending my daughter to college,” Vachon tells Screen Daily from the Glasgow Film Festival. “It was a big success and an honest company. It’s done very, very well for us.” Vachon co-founded Killer Films with Pamela Koffler in 1995 and has worked extensively with Todd Haynes, among many others. Among her productions to receive critical praise but little in the way of financial success are “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Happiness” and “Carol.”

Anyone vaguely familiar with American independent film knows about Richard Linklater. “Slacker,” “Dazed and Confused,” the sweeping “Before” trilogy and “Boyhood” are only a few of the venerated titles in the ever-innovative director’s roster. This year’s “Everybody Wants Some!!” was just the latest example of Linklater’s ability to take fun, goofy scenarios and transform them into something poignant. All the while, the filmmaker has remained in Austin, where he has built his own community of movie lovers through the Austin Film Society, the organization he founded in 1985. Linklater’s career has enough chapters to fill a film of its own, which is what co-directors Louis Black and Karen Bernstein do in “Richard Linklater: Dream is Destiny,” an overview of Linklater’s story that opens in theaters and on VOD this week.
Notably, the filmmakers behind “Dream is Destiny” are a part of the story that they capture.

Save for two misguided dismissals, Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" has a commanding swath of positive reviews at Rotten Tomatoes yielding a 98% fresh rating at the moment. At Metacritic, the film is enjoying a staggering rating of 99 based on nearly 40 reviews so far. It's quite obvious that the film is pretty much universally acclaimed as the filmmaker's stunt has proved to be, well, way more than a stunt. It's a measured dissection of a life lived with all the mundane grace that populates it. I've had my say on this masterpiece, and Drew McWeeny has offered up one of his most personal reviews to date. At Sundance, we were already on board and we talked to Ethan Hawke while we were there, and since then we've had a lengthy sit-down with the actress who gives perhaps the film's most impressive performance: Patricia Arquette. In short, we've covered it, and now the film is in the marketplace,...

Exclusive: Boyhood, a time-lapse narrative feature film that Richard Linklater shot over a 12-year period, has been set for a July 11 release through IFC Films, which has stepped up and committed to a theatrical platform rollout and awards campaign. The film played Sundance and Berlin and its makers have positioned it for what they hope will be a long summer run as audiences watch actor Ellar Coltrane and his supporting cast actually grow up before their eyes, and adults Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette mature as his parents. Related: Berlin Film Festival: Richard Linklater Named Best Director; More At Sundance, there had been some question of whether a large distributor would take the film off the table, but it only seems right that IFC stepped up. After all, as IFC President Jonathan Sehring told me back then, he was the one who wrote an annual check to Linklater for over a decade,...

If you’re an adventurous moviegoer, then counterprogramming, as it’s known, is one of your best friends. It’s what allows you, right smack in the middle of the greasy-butter escape-tastic sequelitis summer season, to see movies like The Kids Are All Right or Beasts of the Southern Wild or Before Midnight or Midnight in Paris: movies for adults, movies that trade over-scaled fantasy for human-scale feeling, movies that get publicized as early awards players because they truly deserve to win awards. If that one screen at the way, way back of the megaplex wasn’t showing The Way,...

Yesterday at Park City, the awards were handed out with one of the hotly buzzed titles of the festival taking two major prizes.
The intense drama Fruitvale won both the Audience Award and U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, which reminds of when Precious won both in 2009, a year before it went on to become a Best Picture Oscar nominee.
The Ryan Coogler‘s film tells the story of the hours leading up to New Year’s Day in 2009, when the 22-year-old Oscar Grant was pulled off a rowdy Bart train at the Fruitvale station and was shot in the back, dying from his wounds.
The former chairman of 20th Century Fox, Tom Rothman said when presenting the prize:
This will not be the last time you guys walk to a podium.
Well, this statement suggests that history may well be getting ready to repeat itself.

Briefly: In a move that was certainly expected, but still wholly satisfying, Sony Pictures Classics has announced their purchase of all North American and UK rights to Richard Linklater's romantic sequel Before Midnight, the follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The press release says, "At Sundance 2013 with 'Before Midnight', we have further confirmation that Richard Linklater is a film master at the peak of his form." Not one person hasn't been talking about Before Midnight here at Sundance, and it's the favorite film for many attendees, including myself. Read my glowing review here where I think it may be the best romance of all time, and stay tuned for any release date info.

Before Midnight, the third film from Richard Linklater about the alluring romance between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend. The characters initially met on a train bound for Vienna in the 1995 film Before Sunrise, and the reunited nine years later in Paris in the 2004 film Before Sunset. In Before Midnight, the pair is in Greece, wrestling with life and love in their early 40s.
“In 1991 we were in Sundance with Slacker and we witnessed the birth of a major American filmmaker,” said Sony Pictures Classics in a release.
