“I know what it feels like to be in a position to put out records that I don’t believe in,” Normani has said of her time as part of Fifth Harmony. Maybe that’s the best way to describe the lengthy gap between the girl group’s last release in 2017 and the singer’s highly anticipated solo album, Dopamine.
Normani’s 2019 hit “Motivation” drew inspiration from early-aughts trailblazers like Beyoncé, Ciara, and Ashanti. She’s since described the track’s dance-pop quality as not enough of a challenge for her, which is probably why you won’t find any Fifth Harmony-style club bangers on Dopamine. Instead, the album embraces contemporary R&b trends, deftly balancing hip-hop and soul with collaborations with Starrah, Gunna, and even James Blake.

People have been clamoring and clowning about the whereabouts of Normani’s debut album for a pop-music eternity. The singer made that noise sound pretty fucking silly when she recently reflected that part of the delay was due to her parents’ simultaneous cancer diagnoses. Normani first announced that her solo debut was in the works in 2018, not long after the girl group she came to prominence in, Fifth Harmony, pumped its breaks for an indefinite hiatus. She went on to drop a few massive features and singles (“Love Lies,” with Khalid; “Dancing With a Stranger,...

Nobody was safe when Cardi B's debut studio album, "Invasion of Privacy," dropped in 2018. "Bodak Yellow" was everywhere. Memes circulated of women, even the ones in happy relationships, aggressively rapping along to "Be Careful," "I Do," "Thru Your Phone," and "Ring" at their partners. So, where's the follow-up?
Cardi's fans have been patiently waiting. The short answer is Cardi's been booked and busy! To hold us over, she's released buzzy singles like "Please Me," "Press," "Wap," "Up," and most recently, "Jealousy" with husband Offset - all of which had accompanying music videos. The Bronx rapper has also been featured on hits like Migos' "Clout," Summer Walker's "Bitter," and Normani's "Wild Side." Additionally, Cardi executive produced the soundtrack to Halle Berry's Netflix movie "Bruised."
But that's not all! Cardi also welcomed daughter, Kulture Kiari, in July 2018 and her son, Wave, in September 2021. "It's been a lot...

It seems Normani is finally gearing up to release new music. On Aug. 7, Rolling Stone reported that the "Wild Side" singer has a new management team, Brandon Creed and Lydia Asrat (Coco Jones), who promise that Normani's new material is on the way. "With new music on the horizon, and Asrat and Creed now at the helm of her musical career, she and the rest of her team are extremely excited to embark on this new chapter and partnership," a rep for Normani told the outlet.
The news comes after Normani parted ways with her old manager, S10 Entertainment's Brandon Silverstein, in May, whom her rep says she "wishes all the best." In a statement to Rolling Stone, Silverstein said, "Change is good. S10 is headed in another direction and felt like it was time for us to move on. Mötley Crüe played a “surprise” intimate club show Friday night (June 30th) at The Underworld in London in advance of their concert at Wembley Stadium the next evening.
The band performed to around 450 attendees under the pseudonym Dogs of War — the title of a new Crüe song that has yet to be released — and ran through a setlist stacked with hits, including “Shout at the Devil,” “Too Fast for Love,” “Live Wire,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” and “Kickstart My Heart” (which closed the set).
Mötley Crüe typically perform a medley of covers during their sets, and for The Underworld performance, they fused Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll, Part 2” with Brownsville Station’s “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter,” Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.,” and the Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.”
They followed the medley up with a full rendition of Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!

Cardi B is slowly but surely restoring camaraderie amongst today's leading women in music. The Grammy-winning Bronx rapper helms the refreshing trend of female-female collaborations, and it has her stepping into a new role within her star power: the feature fairy.
Case in point: Cardi B's new collaboration with Latto, "Put It on Da Floor Again," sits at the No. 7 spot on Apple Music's top songs chart and has amassed over 11 million views on YouTube since the release of its accompanying viral music video on June 2. The remixed track is all music fans could talk about following its drop, and the same goes for fellow female rappers who showed their support. Tucked in a corner of the Catskills, Casa Susanna was a modest private resort where cross-dressing heterosexual men and transgender women gathered on summer weekends through the 1950s and ‘60s to live as their true selves, dressed in the ladies’ fashion of the day and engaging in bourgeois social activities such as taking snapshots.
Over the past 15 years, a handful of articles, academic research, and photography exhibitions (and let’s not forget the 2014 Tony-nominated play by Harvey Fierstein) have gradually opened the door to this secret subculture of Cold War America.
Now “Casa Susanna,” a new documentary by French filmmaker Sébastien Lifshitz, flings it open.
Following a warmly received world premiere in Venice and screenings this week in Toronto, “Casa” lands this fall at BFI London Film Festival and select U.S. and international festivals. PBS Intl., which has global rights and is receiving strong interest, is planning an awards campaign for this year.

Emanuele Crialese put in a buoyant performance at the Venice Film Festival Sunday, during which he discussed how his identity informed his Golden Lion contender L’immensità.
“The inspiration was my childhood and my story that is being transposed and reinterpreted,” Crialese said of the flick. “I tried to find the good interpretation in it. I didn’t want it to be self-referential. I didn’t want to talk about just me. As I try to do with every film I make, I’ve tried to somehow represent in a broader way the topics I really care for like migration. The migration of a soul. That means a transition from one state to another one.”
Crialese added that he cares deeply about the topics in the film, which he said he “interpreted in an autobiographical way.”

SEEVMAs announce social category nominees including BTS, Blackpink, Beyonce …
We’re betting on Taylor Swift to go three-for-three in the categories we’re forecasting: Video of the Year, Best Long Form Video, and Best Direction, all for the short film she directed to accompany her 10-minute extended version of “All Too Well.” If we’re right about the top category, Swift would make history as the first artist ever to win Video of the Year three times. She previously prevailed...

One of the most interesting parts of the MTV Video Music Awards is analyzing the possible winners of the technical categories. Since these categories are voted on by professionals and not fans, oftentimes they can serve as a better indicator of quality in music videos, regardless of popularity. Here is a breakdown of those VMA professional categories, and who is bound to win in each one.
Best Direction
It’s rare these days for a music video to win here without a Video of the Year nomination, so Billie Eilish‘s “Happier Than Ever” and Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar‘s “Family Ties” are likely out. Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers” is a fun music video, but this category tends to go for visuals that are impactful in pop culture and/or have some sort of message or deeper meaning, and “Shivers” doesn’t really fit into either. And while Lil Nas X...

The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards are taking place on August 28, so let’s take a look at some of the genre categories to see who’s likely to win one or two moon persons at the end of the month.
Best Pop
As per usual, Best Pop is stacked with hits. However, as big as Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers” and Lizzo‘s “About Damn Time” are, there’s one hit here that will likely give them a run for their money: Harry Styles‘s “As It Was.” The song is one of two nominated to reach number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 (the other is “About Damn Time”) and is the longest running number-one hit of the year, spending 10 weeks on top. The music video for the song is also acclaimed, and is nominated for a couple technical awards as well. And on top of all of that, Styles’s fan...

In the wake of suffering a severe brain injury one week ago as a result of a devastating car crash, it’s being reported today that Anne Heche has tragically passed away.
The actress was just 53 years old, leaving behind two children.
“Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit,” Heche’s reps said in a statement. “More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love. She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”
Heche had been in a coma since the crash in L.A.’s Mar Vista neighborhood on Friday, August 5. She had been under investigation for reportedly driving under the influence.

Normani's new song "Fair" is about heartbreak - but if you're currently going through an emotional time, it might be difficult to hear. The 25-year-old singer debuted the single on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon"'s YouTube channel at midnight on March 18. In the gut-wrenching song, Normani sings about how it's not fair she's still upset about a breakup and her ex seems fine. "Is it fair that you moved on? / 'Cause I swear that I haven't / Is it right that you've grown / And I'm still stuck in habits? / 'Cause I'm finding it strange / That you're better than average / Hearts didn't break down the middlе / Tell me how did that happen?" she sings. Oof.
In a candid Instagram post, Normani says the song "really captures me in one of my most vulnerable moments." She adds that it makes her "uncomfortable" to share a record unlike anything we've ever heard of from her.

Normani is moving on from her wild side, allowing herself to be vulnerable about love with the release of her new single, “Fair.” A soft R&b track, the song details the struggle of moving on from her heartbreak.
“Is it fair that you’ve moved on/’Cause I swear that I haven’t,” she sings on the vibey track’s chorus. “Is it right that you’ve grown?/And I’m still stuck in habits.”
For Normani, being this candid in a song “makes me uncomfortable,” she wrote on Instagram.

The MTV Europe Music Awards (otherwise known as the EMAs) returned for 2021 and took place in Hungary on Nov. 14 at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna - and the nominees for one of Europe's most highly anticipated award shows made for a pretty impressive lineup. Justin Bieber led the charge with eight total nominations, which included best artist, best pop, and best song, closely followed by Doja Cat and Lil Nas X. Ed Sheeran was the British act with the most nominations of the night, as he was up for best artist, best pop, best UK & Ireland act, best song, and best video (both of which are for his single "Bad Habits"). Sébastien Lifshitz’s “Little Girl,” a documentary about a 7-year-old transgender girl in France named Sasha, has the feel and texture of a contemplative narrative feature. Lifshitz envelops Sasha and her family in a sort of visual cocoon, as if to cradle them, shooting them in gentle afternoon light when they’re outside and in protective shadows when they are inside their house. His touch here is so delicate that it makes most American talking-heads documentaries look particularly crude and formulaic by comparison.
Lifshitz has made some narrative features, including the memorably erotic “Come Undone” with Stéphane Rideau and “Wild Side,” in which he was ahead of the curve in 2004 with casting a transgender actor, Stéphanie Michelini, in a transgender leading role, but he has focused in recent years on documentaries. It was while making “Bambi,” a portrait of the 1950s Parisian trans dancer and showgirl Marie-Pierre Pruvot, that Lifshitz...

Everything being relative, the 2021 MTV VMAs represented a big rebound from the all-time low point of last year’s show, which ended up being pre-recorded without an audience due to pandemic conditions, yet which had everyone involved weirdly trying to pretend that the show was going out live, complete with canned laughter and applause. This year, it was back to “got live if you want it,” and sometimes the show was even lively as well as live, although there was nothing we’ll remember one-twentieth as long as we remember the Iconic Moments from decades past that were wistfully mentioned in passing. If Doja Cat wearing a chair on her head was the closest we were going to get to Britney wearing a snake around her neck, maybe we’ve been just starved enough for real-time irreverence at an awards show that we’ll take it.

Doja Cat exemplified the “host with the most” maxim at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, not only pulling double duty as Mc and performer (she presented “Been Like This” and “You Right” from her new album “Planet Her” with an elegant display of sound and movement), but also cycling through a procession of wacky outfits. She was a winner, too, taking home a Moon Person for best collaboration. That moment, as well as memorable turns from Chlöe and Busta Rhymes, and an unexpected red carpet dustup involving Machine Gun Kelly and Conor McGregor, are among the 10 best moments of this year’s VMAs.

Doja Cat was one busy kitty during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Not only was she in charge of keeping the show rolling as its official host, but she also found time to squeeze in a must-watch performance.

Megan has dropped a new freestyle for her “hotties” on Twitter.
The Houston rapper playfully asked if her fans on Twitter were “up” before sharing a video for “Tuned In Freestyle,” a flow that addresses her haters and pays homage to some Pokémon characters.
On the track, Megan even spits bars like, “I’m the hot girl, feelin’ like Charizard/And he know he finna win if he get my card.” In its accompanying video, she can be seen dressed head-to-toe in lime green while twerking and holding a wine glass in the studio.

Even after hits like "Motivation," "Dancing With a Stranger," and "Wild Side," it's hard to believe that anyone would consider Normani an underdog, let alone herself. "I've always felt like the underdog in anything that I've ever done," the 25-year-old shared with Allure as the magazine's September 2021 cover star. This feeling extends to her time as part of Fifth Harmony from 2012 to 2018. "I didn't get to really sing in the group," she said. "I felt like I was overlooked. That idea has been projected on me. Like, this is your place."
"If I want to sing this pop ballad, then you're going to love it! While you see my Black face!"
Now, Normani is shedding people's past notions of her in order to show the world just what she's made of. "My purpose in this work that I do is for other people that feel...

Normani is a multiplatinum star, but she hasn't always felt that way. One watch of her latest music video "Wild Side" and "underdog" is hardly the first adjective that comes to mind when thinking of the powerful performer. But, as she shared with Allure, being bullied as a kid took a lasting toll. "I've always felt like the underdog," she said, "in anything that I've ever done." While the 25-year-old multihyphenate is harnessing her many talents now as a solo artist, it seems she wasn't fully able to during the years she spent making music as a member of Fifth Harmony. "I didn't get to really sing in the group. I felt like I was...
