Caitlin Rose will release the long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s The Stand-In later this year. The new project, titled Cazimi, will be released Nov. 18 via Missing Piece Records and includes the atmospheric lead single “Black Obsidian.”
A dramatic mix of baritone guitar and glockenspiel introduces “Black Obsidian,” in which Rose tries to untangle what she could’ve handled differently in an unhealthy relationship. “Tried to be just like water to the touch/Take you everywhere you want to be,” she sings. “The Man Who Sold His Skin” and “Coda” stood out among films which picked up awards at the closing ceremony of the 49th Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund.
For the festival’s grand reopening to the international market, after a restricted 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic, attendance surpassed pre-pandemic levels with an all-time-high number of industry accreditations for the event which ran Aug. 21-27.
The strong selection of films at this year’s on-site festival and in the virtual confab New Nordic Films was undoubtedly one reason for this strong attendance, as major films shone at the closing ceremony where six awards were doled out.
“The Man Who Sold His Skin,” the Oscar-nominated film from Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, won the ecumenical film prize and the Andreas Award, a collaboration between The Norwegian Film Festival, Film&Kino and the newspaper Vårt Land. The film is a satire of...

Anyone else more than ready to get Carried away? After years of rumors about a third movie, HBO Max officially announced that Sex and the City would be coming back to life on the streaming service. Not only will it feature a fresh storyline but an entirely new name: And Just Like That... As any Satc fan worth her imitation name necklace knows, the title is lifted from one of Carrie's classic sayings. "I couldn't help but wonder... where are they now," Sarah Jessica Parker cheekily shared on Instagram after the news was announced, alongside a teaser of what's to come. Cynthia Nixon, a.k.a. Miranda, wrote, "You, me, New York...anything is...

Contrary to what society has often led us to believe, the phrase “I love you” does not always clarify what two individuals in a relationship mean to each other. Although those three words can express a sincere sentiment, their ubiquity also makes them ripe for misuse. Part of that, I think, has to do with vague definitions: There is no universal understanding of love, and as a result, “I love you,” once uttered, can hang in the air, its meaning up for grabs.

The Netflix film “Klaus” dominated the film categories at Saturday night’s Annie Awards, the main awards show devoted strictly to animation. The film, made by Spanish animator Sergio Pablos, was a surprise winner of seven awards in the 13 feature-film categories, including Best Animated Feature, along with prizes for directing, character animation, character design, production design, storyboarding and editorial.
While Disney’s “Frozen II” and Laika’s “Missing Link” led all films with eight nominations each, “Frozen” had to settle for wins in the animated effects and voice acting categories (for Josh Gad), while “Missing Link” was shut out completely.
Other top nominees that went unrewarded included DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4.”

Animation newbie Netflix was the big winner Saturday night at Asifa-Hollywood’s 47th annual Annie Awards at UCLA’s Royce Hall, with “Klaus” and “I Lost My Body” taking top honors for Best Feature and Best Indie Feature.
In fact, Sergio Pablos’ innovative 2D Santa origin story led the pack with seven Annies, while Jérémy Clapin’s existential French thriller about a severed hand took home three awards (including writing and the exquisite score by Dan Levy).
Both “Klaus” and “I Lost My Body” are competing against Pixar’s frontrunning “Toy Story 4” in the Oscar race, which was blanked at the Annies. But then so was everything else, except Disney’s “Frozen 2” (shut out of the Oscar race), which earned two Annies for Feature FX and Voice Acting for Josh Gad’s lovable Olaf.

The battle for tonight’s marquee Best Feature prize pits three mega-grossing studio sequels — Disney’s Frozen 2, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4 — against Laika’s Golden Globe-winning Missing Link and Netflix’s first original toon feature Klaus. Frozen 2 arrives with a leading eight nominations.
Just how will tonight’s awards factor into a certain trophy show happening in two weeks? Well, since the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature category was launched in 2002, 13 of the 18 winners of the Annies’ top feature prize – and five of the past seven – went on to claim Oscar gold.

The Philly-based band Big Nothing is something of a modern indie-rock supergroup, bringing together former members of Crybaby, Young Livers, Casual and Spraynard. In a 2014 recap post on the band’s website, the singer admits that recovering from his accident has been more difficult than he imagined and that he will have to "concentrate hard" to be ready for the band’s upcoming tour, scheduled to kick off in May.
"As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again," wrote Bono. "The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this."

U2 frontman Bono penned a super-long A to Z-type ode to 2014, in which he admitted that he may never again be able to play guitar due to serious injuries sustained from a bicycle crash in November.
Before entering the 5,000-plus-word U2.com blog post, the musician warns readers: “This is too long. You should not have time to read this. If you do get to the end of it then you are probably on the same painkillers as me.”
Then he gets after it.

Love and violence abound in this week's episode. Here's Michael's review...
This review contains spoilers
1.7 Get the Rope
It was perhaps unfortunate that this seventh episode of The Knick aired in the UK in the week that a series of racially charged protests erupted on the streets of America. The violent interplay of embattled citizens, a misinformed and rumour-prone populace and a police force operating with a degree of impunity reminded us that the events of a century ago are not that different from those we see on different channels today. In a terrible way, it proved The Knick’s central point that the world of 1900 was startlingly modern and that the concerns of that era are shared with, and unsolved by, our own.
For the show itself the violence served multiple purposes. It acted, in part, as a cathartic release. The constant racist sniping at Edwards has been firing...

Award-winning actor renowned for her work on Broadway and roles in classic films such as East of Eden and The Haunting
Unable to make sufficient money from her novels, the great American writer Carson McCullers took advice from Tennessee Williams and allowed one of her masterpieces to be adapted for the theatre. The resultant success of The Member of the Wedding (1950) widened her fame, and made a Broadway star of Julie Harris, who has died aged 87.
The play's main character is Frankie Addams, a gawky 12-year-old who longs for companionship and the "we of me". Although the second juvenile role, in what is essentially a three-hander, went to a child actor, Brandon de Wilde, the complex part of Frankie fell to Harris, who was then 24. Boys love crazy girls. If you need further proof, just watch the dysfunctional relationship played out in Passion Pit’s new video, “Carried Away," a track from 2012's "Gossamer." [More after the jump...] The clip, shot by “Beasts of the Southern Wild” cinematographer Ben Richardson, features Pp’s lead singer Michael Angelakos and “One Tree Hill” actress Sophia Bush in the throes of a tumultuous relationship. She spends a lot of time acting looney and he spends a lot of time saying "I'm sorry." Directed by Benjamin and Alex Brewer, who have also directed clips for Purity Ring and Alt-j, “Carried Away” is a...

Synth-rockers Passion Pit have just dropped the video for “Carried Away,” the latest single off of their 2012 album Gossamer, and it’s a kinetic, fast-motion look at a tumultuous relationship between a couple played by frontman Michael Angelakos and "One Tree Hill" star Sophia Bush, directed by indie-video prodigies Benjamin and Alex Brewer, and shot by “Beasts of the Southern Wild” cinematographer Ben Richardson. So many notable facets of this collaboration. First of all, it’s great to see Richardson with an exciting if small-scale project post 'Beasts.' His gorgeous camerawork was recognized last year with the Excellence in Cinematography Award at Sundance and the Camera d’Or prize at Cannes, but he was snubbed for an Oscar nomination, despite all of the film’s other Oscar recognition (Best Directing, Best Picture). The directing of the video is also fantastic, with brothers Benjamin and Alex Brewer at the helm.

Jazz pianist Borah Bergman died the same day as David Ware, but as he was a more obscure figure known mostly to hardcore devotees of the avant-garde, the news traveled more slowly. Famous or not, his talents and imagination were prodigious, as his peers knew. John Zorn called him "one of the greatest pianists of our time," and Peter Brötzmann declared, "Borah Bergman was my favorite pianist. One of the few pianists who can work with me at all." Chris Kelsey, both a saxophonist and a critic, proclaimed him "perhaps the most technically accomplished pianist in jazz -- and if he's not at the top, then he's certainly on a short list of two."
One of the things that us critics do, of course, is make comparisons, but there were no valid comparisons for this unique player, who created a stunningly distinctive technique unlike that of any other jazz pianist by working,...

Christina Applegate resuscitated a flatlining season of Saturday Night Live with her brilliant song and dance numbers this weekend.
The Up All Night actress last graced the SNL stage 19 years ago in her Kelly Bundy days, but looked right at home last night. She seemed to be over-selling herself during a few sketches, especially those that involved speaking in accent, but redeemed herself with song. And unlike last week’s dull treatment of the first presidential debate, the gang had a field day with last Thursday’s vice presidential debate.
The laugh-out-loud funny debate cold open set the tone for the entire episode.

Is there anything more heartwarming than seeing a gigantic novelty check get handed over to someone who deserves it? We think not — which is why this video of Karen Klein receiving over 700,000 Washingtons really hits home. Klein is the bus monitor from upstate New York who made headlines this summer when a video of her getting taunted by 12 and 13-year-olds went viral. After seeing the clip on YouTube, friendly Canadian Max Sidorov started a campaign on Indiegogo.com to raise enough money for Klein to take a vacation — and his project instantly took off, eventually raising over $700,000. Here’s one way to start adulthood off on the right foot! One Direction heartthrob Niall Horan is only18 but he’s already doing pretty well for himself, taking last night’s VMAs by storm and catching the attention of none other than Katy Perry. She was apparently really looking forward to seeing the British boyband, tweeting beforehand “If One Direction doesn’t perform on the VMAs I am gonna jump off this ledge.” She’s a big fan, we gather?
Katy got her chance to present Niall and his mates with a Best Pop Video Moonman for their song “What Makes You Beautiful” when she swooped in for a smooch. Yes, he seemed into it. Niall then tweeted a picture of the momentary hookup at Katy, saying “Looks like its official … me and you.” Smooth, dude. But it seemed like Ms. Perry was more than game to play the cougar card.

“I look forward to that performance that people will be talking about for 10 years,” fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff told VH1′s Kate Spencer last night on the Vma red carpet. “I have a feeling that might be Alicia Keys tonight.”
His feeling may prove true, but not just due to Keys’ soaring vocals during “Girl on Fire.” Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas showed up onstage to deliver a bit of her floor exercise/dance in the middle of the song, definitely demonstrating what a girl on fire looks like.
Other celebs on the red carpet were likely satisfied with the performances of their faves, too. “One Direction just showed up!” the entire cast of MTV’s Inbetweeners practically squealed like tween girls, before breaking out into the boy band’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
Besties Rihanna and Katy Perry seemed to be fans of nothing as much as each other all night.

We have no idea which is cuter: Jackson Rathbone’s new baby boy, or Jackson Rathbone describing his new baby boy. Check out the video above and you’ll see what we mean. It’s a tossup! VH1′s Kate Spencer caught up with the Twilight actor on the Vma red carpet last night, and asked him about life as a dad since the birth of his son Monroe Jackson Rathbone VI in early July. And it sounds pretty darn adorable.
“I’m used to long hours and late nights, but it’s much more rewarding raising a little baby,” says the 27-year old. “He’s the most wonderful thing. He’s so beautiful, he’s got the greatest smile, little dimples.” Not only is he super precious, but he’s also a sleeper. “We’re blessed because he sleeps through the night,” he added.

The VMAs ended last night with Taylor Swift performing “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” her latest stinging anthem to relationships gone horribly horribly wrong. It’s not news to say that T-Swizzle has gotten some pretty decent mileage (and record sales) from her heartbreak with high profile dudes like John Mayer, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner and god knows how many more. It’s gotta be pretty freaky for a guy to get called out in the form of a hit pop track…but then again, it might be kind of cool. Right? Like being part of an irritatingly catchy piece of history. VH1′s very own Kate Spencer was on the Vma red carpet and asked celebs to weigh in on whether or not they’d like to be the subject of a Taylor Swift breakup song!

Ryan Murphy shared the first on-set photo of Sjp on Twitter -- and Chris Colfer approves! Is it just me, or is Glee getting a little Carried away with all these guest stars? Terrible puns aside, creator Ryan Murphy tweeted the first shot of Chris Colfer and Sarah Jessica Parker filming a scene from Glee's upcoming fourth season Aug. 20, the two seem awfully chummy. "I love her - I love her!" Chris tweeted in response. "Can we keep her?" Sjp has a recurring role on Glee's fourth season as Isabelle, an editor at Vogue.com, where Kurt will be interning. And unlike Rachel's (Lea Michele) wicked dance instructor Cassandra (Kate Hudson), it sounds like Izzy will be more of a mentor to Kurt than a tormentor. Are you excited for all the big names coming to Glee this fall? Drop a comment with your hopes and predictions for...

Pop!
There’s much to be said, and there’s much that has been said about the journey Pop music has taken in its lifetime. It’s an infinitely colourful chameleon, that has changed and changed back according to its surroundings, its decade, its economy, its climate, its generation, its drugs, its instruments and more. Not much is often said about where it will go, and the fantastical colours it might create.
There have been hints though, and I don’t mean the diet-RnB, Dance-lite or watered down Rap that currently conquers the charts. As good as they may or may not be, they’re not pop, they’re more easily digestible versions of their source material. No, what I’m referring to is actual pop music. The prophets of its future came...

Scott Snibbe is a New York-based media artist whose innovative vision has taken the art and music worlds to new depths of interactivity. From giant, digital public installations to touch-screen based art, the visual artist behind musicians like Bjork and Passion Pit is bringing together art, music and technology in groundbreaking ways.
Snibbe initially took center stage in the late 1990s when he became one the first artists to work with projector-based interactivity, a technique that involved computer-generated images screened onto walls or floors that would respond to the movement of people. But he's recently become more well known for creating some of the first interactive art applications for iOS mobile devices. His first three apps -- Gravilux, Bubble Harp, and Antograph -- came out in 2010 and quickly rose in the ranks of iTunes popularity. Combining his love for science, music, gaming and animation, the applications allowed users to explore...
