Reba McEntire is returning to the sitcom world — and reuniting with the team behind her last two comedies as well. NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled multi-camera comedy starring McEntire, who will also executive produce.
The show, from Universal Studio Group’s Universal TV division, stars McEntire as a woman who “inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.” Kevin Abbott is the writer and exec producer, while Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis and Julie Abbott are non-writing exec producers.
It’s a reunion for most of the group, who previously worked together on McEntire’s signature series for The WB, “Reba,” as well as her follow-up sitcom for ABC, “Malibu Country.” Hanel and Schultheis were exec producers for the entire run of “Reba,” while Abbott joined after the...

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Matthew Macfadyen — as himself and in character — is on fire.
The “Succession” star took home his second Emmy Award Monday night, winning the category for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama series. Macfadyen has been nominated for an Emmy three times for his portrayal of Tom Wambsgans on the HBO drama. He first won in 2022, and in the past eight days, he’s won a second Emmy, earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and taken home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
As fans of “Succession” already know (and spoiler alert for those who don’t), his character also ended up as the CEO of Waystar Royco — out-maneuvering his wife, Shiv (Sarah Snook), her brothers Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), as well as the many other aspiring kings new boss Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) was considering. While it...

To say anyone “won” at the end of “Succession” is a stretch, but there’s no denying who came out on top at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Matthew Macfadyen, who played the eternal shit-eater (turned CEO) Tom Wambsgans on HBO’s drama, took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor. It was his first nomination and thus, his first win.
At the Golden Globes, the Supporting Actor race isn’t divided between Comedy and Drama contenders. There’s only one category for all supporting stars, meaning Macfadyen beat out not only his nominated co-stars, Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård, as well as Billy Crudup’s dramatic performance in “The Morning Show,” but also Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) and James Marsden (“Jury Duty”), whose roles land them in the comedy categories at other awards shows. Thankfully, that means no one can whine about whether Macfadyen’s colorful quips should’ve forced...

Ryan Reynolds was born in Canada and started acting at a young age, landing a role on a teenage soap opera. He then proceeded to work in both Canadian and American television, ultimately finding minor fame on the moderately successful ABC sitcom “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.”
Movies followed with the low end of “Buying the Cow,” then a remake of “The In-Laws” and into bigger successes in “Blade: Trinity,” “Definitely Maybe,” and “Adventureland.” His career went into high gear by being cast as “Green Lantern” and starring opposite Sandra Bullock in “The Proposal.”
Reynolds managed to pull off the unthinkable in 2016 when he managed to get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical Actor for “Deadpool.” The film had incredible box office returns, but it’s a rare achievement for a superhero role to bring major awards attention.

Ryan Reynolds starred in a wide range of movies that helped him land the career he enjoys today. But there was a moment earlier on where he wasn’t satisfied with the gigs he was getting.
This resulted in Reynolds taking a long hiatus from acting to explore other options.

Starting out, acting was the only career Reynolds envisioned for himself since he was young. He grew up in a working class household, raised by a father who was a police officer. Reynolds had brothers that followed their father’s footsteps by becoming cops themselves. The Blade Trinity star considered pursuing a similar field of work by becoming a Fireman when circumstances got in the way of that goal.

What is the best television series of all time? Some argue the merits of how "The Wire" exposed the hypocrisy of the Baltimore drug war in Baltimore; others point to the villainous evolution of Walter White in "Breaking Bad." Choose to debate this topic endlessly, and there will still only be one, true answer: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," for all its faults and unsavory associations, is the best TV series ever made. Running seven seasons (and five more in comic book form), "Buffy" had it all: vampires, slayers, spells, werewolves, a hellmouth, high school trials and tribulations, college jocks that were secretly androids, evil Mayors, and Giles!
"Buffy" also boasted one of the best casts in all of network television, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Marsters, Anthony Head -- and last but not least, Nicholas Brendon. In the age of "Friends," there...

Jamie Tarses, the TV executive and producer who was the first woman to head a Big Three network entertainment division, was remembered Monday by former colleagues and television executives as a gifted, whip-smart “force of nature” who forged a path for others in a male-dominated industry.
Tarses died Monday at the age of 56. Her passing shocked the industry as she came up the ranks and remained a respected figure among the generation of industry executives who came up in the 1990s.
Tarses is credited with helping to pave the way for other women at the top of TV. Walt Disney Television chairman Dana Walden and 20th Television president Karey Burke both hailed Tarses as a mentor. Tarses “shattered stereotypes and ideas about what a female executive could achieve, and paved the way for others, at a cost to herself,” said Burke.

It’s hard to believe now, but it took until 1996 for the broadcast networks to finally hire their first-ever female entertainment president, when ABC recruited Jamie Tarses away from NBC to take the job. There had been a handful of other women in powerful slots, including Lucie Salhany, who was briefly chair of the Fox Broadcasting Co. before launching Upn. But until streaming upended the business, “entertainment president” was the most visible, and arguably the most important, leadership job at a network. And until Tarses, it had been all men.
Tarses’ rise at ABC coincided with the start of my career as a cub reporter, covering the network TV business in Los Angeles, and one of my first duties was to chronicle the tenure of the young trailblazer. But from the start, Tarses was faced with many in Hollywood looking to tear her down — be it rivals jealous of her age,...

Jamie Tarses, one of the most dynamic television executives of her era who helped build NBC’s Must-See TV lineup and went on to become the first woman to lead a Big Three network programming division, died Monday following complications from a cardiac event last fall, according to Tarses’ family. She was 56.
Tarses was born into the industry as the daughter of famed comedy writer-producer Jay Tarses. As a network executive, she made a big splash at NBC in the early 1990s, developing “Friends” and “Mad About You.” She made headlines when she moved over to ABC Entertainment as president during a turbulent era for the network and then-new parent company, Disney.

Jamie Tarses, who broke the glass ceiling for female TV executives as the first woman to run a network entertainment division, passed away this morning from complications stemming from a cardiac event she suffered last fall, according to her family. She was 56.
A superstar TV executive, Tarses was instrumental in developing such iconic shows as NBC’s Friends and Frasier and reached the pinnacle of the network programming executive ladder by age 32, becoming president of ABC Entertainment. Young and phenomenally successful, Tarses transcended the media business to become a bona fide celebrity who was both admired and scrutinized. The enormous pressure of the job and relentless media attention took a toll on her tenure, which Tarses followed with a successful second career as a TV producer of such popular shows as ABC’s Happy Endings, TBS’ My Boys, TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds.

Like many actors before him, Ryan Reynolds first rose to prominence as the star of a TV sitcom before making the jump into movies, and for the first couple of years, he tended to be cast in roles that were an extension of the persona he’d honed on Two Guys and a Girl. Van Wilder, Buying the Cow, Foolproof and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle were all standard fare, before he diversified his output with roles in blockbuster sequel Blade: Trinity and remake The Amityville Horror.
The roads eventually led back to comedy, though, and in 2005, Reynolds headlined indie feature Waiting… alongside a talented ensemble that also boasted Justin Long, Anna Faris, David Koechner and Luis Guzman. Reviews weren’t particularly kind, and even fifteen years later the movie holds a weak Rotten Tomatoes score of just 30%, but it was a decent sized box office hit after earning...

Ryan Reynolds never misses an opportunity to take hilarious self-deprecating shots at some of the more ignominious entries from his notoriously checkered CV of movies and television. The latest such example, a campaign for his Mint Mobile premium wireless company, takes a shot at his film flop, Foolproof.
Enter Mint Mobile+, a mock streaming service set up by Reynolds, bearing an accompanying website that entices would-be subscribers by showcasing the content available to stream. However, said content simply consists of one movie, Foolproof, which has been repackaged in numerous entries across the platform’s entire (Disney+ imitating) interface. Reynolds spent the last week dangling this proverbial carrot with “80 minutes” of “bingetastic unoriginals” that will stream in “2003 DVD quality.” Check out his “trailer” for the service just below.

Two underrated Ryan Reynolds movies, Buried and Definitely, Maybe, are now streaming on Prime/Hulu and Netflix, respectively.
About two decades ago, Reynolds’ only claim to fame was a little sitcom titled Two Guys and a Girl. An uninspired show which tried to imitate iconic comedies of the time, it hardly predicted the future that was in store for one of the two male leads. In the years that followed, Reynolds would star in numerous roles, some good, some bad.
Honing his comedic timing through films like Just Friends, The Proposal and The Change-Up, the actor eventually landed the part of Deadpool. Rectifying the mistakes made during the atrocious X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds delivered a film that honored the zany comic strips on which it was based, and gave Fox a franchise that could rival even Marvel’s.

Happy 43rd birthday to Ryan Reynolds on October 23, 2019. Born in Canada, Reynolds started acting at a young age when he landed a role on a teenage soap opera. He then proceeded to work in both Canadian and American television, ultimately finding minor fame on the moderately successful ABC sitcom “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.”

It looks like Ryan Reynolds is getting into the game show game! The Deadpool actor is set to produce an original family game show called Don’t for ABC.
Don’t is described as a “comedic physical game show in which families of four are asked to perform various challenges. The family members must work together on mental and physical tasks with just one rule: ‘Don’t’ do something. They might be told to ‘don’t slip,’ ‘don’t laugh,’ ‘don’t scream,’ ‘don’t forget,’ or another ‘don’t’ challenge.”
It’s also explained that “each episode will focus on one family as they go through the ‘Don’t’ tests. If they succeed, they’ll win a cash prize. But if the family fails a challenge, one of them will be eliminated. When just one contestant is left, the last remaining family member must compete on their own. Whatever money they’ve earned,...

In 1999, the fresh-faced 23-year-old and then-star of ABC sitcom Two Guys and a Girl (which, we should never forget, was originally called Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place) had it all figured out. Deadpool hits theaters Friday, Feb. 12, Ryan Reynolds stars in it, and fans are hotly anticipating the funny, raunchy superhero movie. All these things easily couldn't have happened - and that's worth talking about. Here's the thing about Deadpool, as a comic book character: He's not exactly what most people would imagine when they think about the main character in a superhero movie. At best, Deadpool, a.k.a. Wade Wilson, is an anti-hero; he's a wise-cracking Bugs Bunny of a guy, even when he's running around killing people. He's a little unhinged, he's a little sexually fluid, and perhaps strangest of all,...

The former actor and producer will serve as the organization’s director of development and chief fundraiser. Strengthening that part of the non-profit has been a priority for Cyd Wilson, its recently installed executive director. “This organization has never aggressively done any major fundraising and has relied almost solely on individual donations and grants. I’m out to change that,” she told Backstage late last year. Strouse comes to the SAG Foundation from St. Jude Children’s Hospital where she headed up strategic and corporate partnerships, cultivated celebrity and donor relations and produced major fundraising events. Prior to her tenure at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Strouse worked as the director of advertising and sponsorship at the Writers Guild of America West. Stepping back from the bombastic action of the ever-expanding McU, Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming appearance in David Dobkin’s The Judge is drawing a lot of attention coming out of Toronto. For long-term fans of the charismatic actor, it marks a return to the low-key and cunning roles found in films such as Two Guys and a Girl along with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and is a welcome tonic to the adventures of Tony Stark.

It's Nathan Fillion's birthday and you can't let such an event pass by without taking the time to celebrate the "Castle" star. Though Fillion appeared on many shows, including a regular role on "Two Guys and a Girl," he jumped onto the radar of most as Malcolm Reynolds on Joss Whedon's "Firefly."
The show may have only lasted one short season, but it was enough to give him a permanent place in the pop culture hall of fame. His continuing to work with Whedon on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and, of course, "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," certainly didn't hurt the cause.
Now, with "Castle" going strong, there's no stopping Fillion. So take a moment to bask in his birthday glow with a collection of his best on-screen moments, captured in Gif form.

It's been announced that Matthew Perry is returning to television in another new comedy. He'll star, co-write, and executive produce a new version of The Odd Couple.
Danny Jacobson, who created Two Guys and a Girl, will co-write and executive produce as well. The network has given a script commitment for the new series.
Created by Neil Simon, The Odd Couple began as a Broadway play and then went on to become a movie in 1968, famously starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon as a pair of mis-matched divorced roommates, Oscar Madison and Felix Unger. They reprised their roles in a 1998 sequel.
