Who will win Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys? This award goes to the artists, producers, and engineers of the year’s best single. That’s where this differs from Song of the Year, which goes specifically to songwriters. Though this award is not technically a popularity contest, commercial success is typically a major factor, like Miley Cyrus‘s reigning champion “Flowers,” a blockbuster that spent several weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. So will the next winner be a big hit as well? Scroll down to see our official racetrack odds, which are calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds are always changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.
For most of history there were five Grammy nominees in the Record of the Year category, same as there were for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

The Oscars are almost upon us, and according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Billie Eilish will claim her second trophy for Best Original Song. She and her brother Finneas previously won for penning the title song from “No Time to Die,” and now they’re expected to prevail again for their ballad “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie.” If they do, it would be the first time this century that a composition wins both Song of the Year at the Grammys and Best Original Song at the Oscars.
It’s less common than it used to be for soundtrack songs to cross over to the Grammys. The last time a song won both of these awards was actually Celine Dion‘s “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic.” Written by James Horner and Will Jennings, the classic love theme from the blockbuster film won Best Original...

21 Savage has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming biopic, titled American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, in which Donald Glover and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin will both play the rapper. Watch it below.
According to a press release, the clip shows three generations of 21 Savage “in the heat of a personal crisis” while doubling as a music video for a brand new song from the artist.
American Dream will cover 21’s infamous 2018 arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), which revealed that he was actually born in the UK before moving to Atlanta and making his name there as a rapper.
At the time, 21 Savage’s lawyer said he “never hid his immigration status from the US government.” During an interview with Good Morning America, 21 noted that his arrest came shortly after he criticized Trump’s extreme immigration policies with his song “a lot.”

Snake Plissken doesn't give a damn.
When audiences see a bitter or misanthropic character in a movie, optimism likely leads them to search for the disappointed idealist underneath. One example: Rick (Humphrey Bogart) from "Casablanca." Rick is bitter and cynical about the world and doesn't care when scoundrels are taken away by the Nazis in Morocco. When Rick is asked about his nationality, he declares himself to be a drunkard. Audiences, however, will eventually learn that Rick lost his idealism years earlier when an affair with his ex-lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) was cut off abruptly. Rick will eventually find a new lease on life by helping Ilsa out of the country, grateful for the time they spent together. "We'll always have Paris," he says wistfully.
Imagine an ending where Rick did not help Ilsa, and she was apprehended by the Nazis while Rick stood idly by, indifferent to her fate.

The Grammys don’t have a very good track record when it comes to honoring rap music in general field categories. Though the genre has come to dominate the charts, there wasn’t a single hip-hop winner for Record of the Year until “This is America” by Childish Gambino in 2019. Could “Savage (Remix)” by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce be the second just two years later?
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa is the front-runner with leading odds of 9/2. It’s a more traditional Grammy contender than “Savage” — a pop breakup anthem like Adele‘s “Rolling in the Deep” and Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used to Know” in a throwback style like Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky.” Lipa is also helped by the fact that the song is additionally nominated for Song of the Year, and that her “Future...

“Right now, I can’t really do anything about it because Broadway is closed,” laughs composer Ludwig Goransson about what he is doing to achieve Egot status. In the last two years, Göransson has won an Emmy for “The Mandalorian,” Grammys for “This is America” and an Oscar for “Black Panther,” so he only needs a Tony to complete the feat, which has only been achieved by 16 people to date. He admits in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “I haven’t put that much thought into how to achieve the Egot, but I love opera, I love Broadway, I love theaters and maybe someday, when I get the opportunity to work with someone I really love, that will happen, but not within the next couple years.”

Ludwig Göransson, who won an Emmy last month for composing the music to season 1 of “The Mandalorian,” is predictably coy about the show’s return, beginning tomorrow on Disney Plus. But this much is certain: those bass recorders, the distinct and lonely theme for the helmeted bounty hunter, will be back.
“There will be a lot of new sounds, new themes and new ideas, but we also have the familiar themes that we love from season 1,” Göransson tells Variety. He has finished scoring the eight episodes of season 2, adding about the series, “It’s so fun and, especially in these times, we need some joy in our lives.”
The Swedish-born, Los Angeles-based composer remains among the hottest commodities in film music today. On the heels of his Oscar win for the music of “Black Panther,” he won three Grammys (including record and song of the year for Childish Gambino’s...

As we get closer to the 2021 Grammy Awards nominations (date yet to be announced), we should take a closer look at the race for Record of the Year, which is stacked with possibilities. This category honors individual songs, with the prize going to the artists, producers and engineers. Let’s see which hits are primed for some glory.

As with Album of the Year, the Record of the Year conversation seems to be set on The Weeknd for his smash hit “Blinding Lights.” The song would not only be The Weeknd’s first general field win, it would also give superstar producer Max Martin his first general win too after working on some of the biggest hits of the last 25 years. In looking for what “Black Panther” and Childish Gambino have in common, you might not look first to Swedish heritage. But a transplant from that country, composer Ludwig Göransson, managed a surprising and possibly unprecedented coup in this year’s Grammy nominations, earning one nod for his work as a film scorer on “Black Panther,” and three more as Donald Glover’s producing and songwriting partner in Childish Gambino.
Göransson’s “Panther” score — much of it rooted in the West African sounds he recorded while researching the project — makes its stand in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. In his other life as a member of Childish Gambino, Göransson’s work with Glover pulled in three nominations, two of them for the acclaimed single “This is America,” in the all-genre Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories. The additional Childish Gambino nomination came for “Feels...

Every year, in the hours after the nominees for the Grammy Awards are announced, howls of outrage can be heard across the globe. “He/She was/They were robbed!” “Who is he/she/they?” “This is Bs!” The ranks of the disgruntled are endless.
While the winners are a whole other conversation, it’s fair to say that the Grammys’ list of nominees has become increasingly and impressively diverse in recent years, at least when one considers the fact that the awards aim for consensus and thus are, by nature, “middle of the road.” With all of that in mind, they never lose their ability to surprise, and there is no shortage of surprises and snubs in this year’s nominee list.

Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” is not one of the best songs released in the past year. It’s a good song — frantic and mournful and rattling — but it’s not one of the best songs of the year. Yet there it is, nominated for both a Song of the Year and Record of the Year Grammy. This isn’t a problem in and of itself — the Grammys are often comically wrong in what they choose or not choose to nominate — but “This Is America” is most notable for its music video,...

In addition to the four nominations for his work with frequent collaborator Drake, Boi-1da, a.k.a. Matthew Samuels, earned two additional nods in the rap categories for serving as a writer on Eminem and Jay Rock singles. He also received a nomination for Non-Classical Producer of the Year.

The Grammys have gotten flak for being dismissive of women and hip-hop artists, but as luck would have it, this year they have the opportunity to make amends by honoring a female rapper: Cardi B. The Grammy nominations will be announced on Friday morning, December 7, and according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Cardi B will be the most nominated artist in the general field categories with four bids — this despite the fact that she’s not even eligible for Best New Artist.

While some will read into this that his inclusion in the series and not limited series category means that there might be an encore for his groundbreaking summer Showtime series, Baron Cohen at this point only wanted to thank the people who unwittingly helped him get there.

The top three Grammy contenders for Record of the Year according to the combined predictions of nearly 2,000 Gold Derby users are all hip-hop songs. That makes sense since some of the biggest hits of the year have been hip-hop songs, and the recording academy loves big hits like recent dominant chart-toppers “Hello” by Adele and “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. There’s one problem, though: hip-hop has never won Record of the Year. Will that finally change?
Topping our predictions as of this writing is “This is America” by Childish Gambino with leading odds of 9/2. The politically charged song and music video were subjects of widespread discussion this past spring and gave Childish his first ever number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s been a big year overall for Childish, who started 2018 with Grammy nominations for Record of the Year (“Redbone”) and Album of the Year.

“Guava Island,” the mysterious and highly secretive project from Donald Glover and Rihanna, was the talk of the Glover-backed Pharos festival in New Zealand over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A nearly two-minute preview of the film was screened at the festival, footage from which has found its way online (via Variety) and is picking up traction with fans of the two music superstars. While some have predicted “Guava Island” is a music video, the preview describes the project as “A Childish Gambino Film.”
The first footage from “Guava Island” that screened at Pharos festival confirms new details about the project, including a storyline that involves Glover and Rihanna’s characters in a relationship and Glover’s character getting kidnapped. The film is set in Cuba and shot on location. Glover’s longtime collaborator Hiro Murai, who has shot numerous Gambino music videos and episodes of “Atlanta,” directed the project. The...

Earlier this year reports emerged of Donald Glover and Rihanna filming in Cuba, and it looks like the fruits of that effort, a film reportedly called “Guava Island,” were previewed at Glover’s Pharos festival in New Zealand last weekend. Fan footage of the trailer, first posted by Stereogum, appears below.
The film, credited to Glover’s alter ego as “A Childish Gambino Film,” was directed by his longtime collaborator Hiro Murai, who has worked with him on his FX show Atlanta as well as the videos “This Is America” and “Sober.”
The clips feature Glover and Rihanna in a setting that is apparently deceptively idyllic: “We live in paradise but none of us actually have the time or the means to live here,” he says. The film also stars Letitia Wright and Nonso Anozie.

Aaron Sorkin is on board to direct and Sacha Baron Cohen is in early talks to star in “The Trial of the Chicago 7” at Amblin Entertainment, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Steven Spielberg had previously eyed to direct the political drama, which has long been gestating at his Universal Studios-based production company. But with Sorkin directing his own screenplay that he wrote over a decade ago, the project looks to be moving closer to a reality.
Marc Platt is producing.

This is an artist. Childish Gambino—Aka Donald Glover—sparked quite the conversation when he released the music video for "This Is America" back in May and proved once again that he is one to keep an eye on. The acclaimed artist used the video to comment on racism in America, suggesting that the country's citizens care more about protecting guns than people. In addition to tackling one of the most important political topics in the U.S., the video itself is incredibly well-done, visually stunning, and definitely a must-watch. So, it comes as no surprise that it is a finalist for Music Video of 2018 in this year's E! People's Choice Awards. While the...

To say that the 2019 Grammy Awards have something to prove is an understatement of epic proportions.
While 2018 seemed set to be a triumph for the ceremony — a return to New York for the awards’ 60th anniversary, capped by possibly the most racially and musically diverse slate of nominees in Recording Academy history — instead, it brought more problems than any year in memory. The voters went conservative, with multiple nominations for Jay-z and Kendrick Lamar effectively cancelling each other out and resulting in a big night for Bruno Mars. The performances and nominations were notably heavy on male artists — Lorde, the only female Best Album nominee, did not perform on the show, even though the four other (male) nominees were invited — and even worse, a post-show question about the year’s unusually low number of female winners led Academy chairman Neil Portnow to say that women artists and executives need to “step up.

“Sorry to Bother You” is the first movie I have seen at the London Film Festival press screenings that received a round of applause come the end credits. Steve McQueen‘s “Widows” didn’t receive a round of applause, nor did the Keira Knightley vehicle “Colette.” But Boots Riley‘s screenwriting and directorial debut, did. That’s how great his film is. Here’s the official synopsis of this Annapurna Pictures release: In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.
It’s by far one of the most original films of the year, its off-kilter humour and vivid imagination providing plenty of laughs throughout the entire runtime. The entire cinema loved it, and it’s received rapturous reviews to match. It’s currently got a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Updated, 9:35 Am: Childish Gambino, the rap alter ego of Atlanta’s Donald Glover, has rescheduled the concerts date he was forced to postpone after an onstage injury over the weekend. See the new dates below.
Previously, September 26: Fans of Childish Gambino will be disappointed to hear that he has canceled tour dates for his “This Is America” North American tour after he suffered an injury during his Dallas show.
After he injured his foot, his Dallas concert was cut short — but don’t fret! It seems as though Donald Glover’s rap alias is ok and that the concert will continue in December in Nashville. Those who were expecting to attend the canceled tour stops will be refunded.

Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino has been forced to postpone his remaining “This Is America Tour” stops until later this year due to an injury, Live Nation announced Wednesday.
According to TMZ, Glover injured himself on stage during a show at Dallas’ American Airlines Center last weekend, and was unable to complete the last 30 minutes of his set. Sources told TMZ it’s possible Glover has a broken foot and that he has actually aggravated the preexisting injury by continuing to perform on it.
Fam Rothstein, co-principal of the creative collective Wolf + Rothstein, a partnership between Glover and Chad “The Wolf” Taylor, took to Twitter early Wednesday to let Gambino fans know that the tour had been “postponed, not cancelled.” He also seemingly confirmed Glover had been injured by saying he “played through the pain, but has to sit some dates out. Back before the year’s over.”

Jaden Smith has a wide range of influences, and he wears them on his sleeve. The 20-year-old is an intriguing rapper, working on the mechanics to become a good rapper. On “Back On My Sh*t” he isn’t there yet, but the process is getting closer to its endpoint.
Here’s a list of what Jaden manages to cram into the less than three-minute song: rap like a mini-Offset, distort his voice like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy-era Kanye, include a Houston-indebted chopped and screwed narration and deliver a Justin Vernon vocoder-inspired outro.

There are only a few days left in the eligibility period for the 2019 Grammys, so we’ve opened predictions in two more general field categories: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Those awards, like Album of the Year and Best New Artist, are getting a shake-up as the recording academy is planning on eight nominees in each of those categories, up from the usual five. And the awards may also be affected by the recent controversies over the Grammys’ treatment of female artists and hip-hop artists, which prompted the recording academy to assemble a diversity task force. So who will make the cut?
Nominations in all general-field categories are often tricky to predict because they aren’t decided by a simple popular vote of recording academy members. The process does start with an academy-wide vote, but then nomination review committees convene to select the final nominees. That...

Teddy Perkins, one of the most memorable “Atlanta” characters showed up in the audience of the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards — catching pretty much everyone but Donald Glover by surprise.
Viewers caught sight of Perkins, a creepy rich recluse who appeared in the show’s second season, as the camera panned over the audience at the 2018 Emmys. Glover played the makeup-heavy character on the episode called “Teddy Perkins,” though he wasn’t credited.
But Glover didn’t play Perkins at the Emmys — because both he and Perkins were seen in the crowd.

It felt like part of Childish Gambino died last night. As his sturdy frame lumbered through golden LSD obelisks and beads of sweat pooled on his back as “Redbone” played, he had the bearing of an exhausted man leaving behind a husk he’d never return to collect.

Diagnosis: Too close to call.
That’s a surprising state of being for the Emmys, which are usually as predictable as an unrelenting heat wave on the day of the ceremony itself. But this year, while many of the acting races seem locked, the series races couldn’t be tighter. If last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies are any indication, voters haven’t forgotten about “Game of Thrones,” even though it sat out last year’s race. The HBO juggernaut came thundering back into contention, scoring seven early wins. And on the comedy side, FX’s “Atlanta” and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” each have three wins to their credit so far, setting up a battle royale for the comedy crown.

Childish Gambino released “Feels Like Summer” as a promotional single back in July, but it wasn’t widely discussed until September 2, when Childish premiered a new music video for the song. Directed by Childish himself Donald Glover, along with Ivan Dixon and Greg Sharp, the animated clip shows the hip-hop artist walking down a street while observing those around him, who you might not notice at first are a who’s-who of black public figures. Watch the video above.
The video features everyone from Will Smith and Oprah Winfrey to Beyonce and Janelle Monae. There are even political figures. Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum appears with a bowl of melted ice cream that has been interpreted as a reference to slain rapper XXXTentacion. And Michelle Obama shows up to comfort Kanye West, who is crying and wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap.

In Childish Gambino’s music video for “Feels Like Summer” to the very socially poetic and aggressive “This Is America”, he gives us a fantasy neighborhood populated by some of today’s most popular rappers and prominent black figures in pop culture.
