It's official: "Dune" is not a book or a movie, it's a really great album for which the other stuff serve as companion pieces. This was made clear in a feature about "Dune: Part Two" in the latest issue of Total Film, where director Denis Villeneuve spoke about his composer, Hans Zimmer, and his intense love for the project. According to Villeneuve, Zimmer loved creating music for "Dune" so much that he just couldn't stop.
"I remember at one point, he called me, and said, 'Denis, listen to this. You're going to love this.' I said, 'Hans, it's absolutely fantastic music. I deeply love it. But we released the film six months ago!' He was still scoring non-stop. And he's doing the same right now, by the way. It's by far the best score I've had in my life."

A genre that has been around for decades and gets talked about too rarely, sword and sorcery can encompass many films and sub-genres. So, what makes a sword and sorcery film better than the others? What makes it worthy of being the best? For some it will be how closely it follows the genre’s established rules and typical stories. For others, it will be how well-written and directed they are. For us, it’s how enjoyable they are, so, yes, some will deviate a bit from the usual rules of the genre, but all will be fun. So let’s take a look at what we consider the best sword and sorcery movies!

Kino Lorber brings the 1967 spaghetti Western Face to Face to Blu-ray this month, one of director Sergio Sollima’s most notable titles, previously released on DVD as a box-set with the two other titles in Sollima’s trilogy The Big Gundown (1966) and Run, Man, Run (1968). Noted for imbuing his work with a bit of actual social and historical context, there’s a bit more substance than usual for a film relegated to the periphery of a movement dominated by a mere handful of notable names. Though it’s ultimately not at the same level as iconic works by Sergio Leone and hasn’t reached the same level of reappraisal as several other retroactively recuperated directors, it features more nuanced characterizations in its complex narrative structure than is usually evident in other titles of the era.

Banshee, Season 2: Episode 5 – “The Truth About Unicorns”
Written by John Romano
Directed by Babak Najafi
Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax
The die-hard Banshee fan has every right to dislike “The Truth About Unicorns.” So much of what you would expect from an episode of this series is simply not here. That, however, does not mean that “The Truth About Unicorns” doesn’t stay true to the identity of Banshee. And while Banshee is the series I would least expect to see make this kind of formal departure, I can’t help but think that this is the episode that needed to happen at this stage in the season.
After a two-part thrill ride following the mystery of Solomon’s disappearance (which included heart-racing juggernauts Jonah and Clayton), the pace of Banshee needed to wind down if just for the sake of the viewer’s health. Instead of turning...

Robert E. Howard was a popular fantasy fiction author back in the 20s and 30s. His most popular character, Conan the Barbarian has muscled his way onto the big screen three times so far and has starred in a long-running comic book series. Now his next most famous creation, Solomon Kane, has been filmed and the result, Solomon Kane is a mixed bag.
Starting in 1600 Solomon Kane (played James Purefoy), is a ruthless English soldier/mercenary who lives a life of bloodshed and violence. But after raiding a North Africa city Satan and his servants declare that they want to possess Solomon’s soul. Solomon escapes and attempts to live a peaceful live in a monastery and renounces violence, but a new evil has raised its ugly head in England. After being kept from North American theater screens for years now (for reasons unbeknownst even to director Michael J. Bassett) Solomon Kane, the adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp-Puritan magazine stories from the early 1900’s has finally been awarded a release. For the most part, this grungy period epic both subverts and embraces its roots admirably, failing mainly when it begins to ponder and attempt the philosophical.
Starring James Purefoy who is best known for his stellar work as Mark Anthony on HBO’s Rome, Solomon Kane takes us on a bittersweet journey of redemption across mid-level Britain as a dark force led by the sorcerer Malachi is recruiting the strong, enslaving the weak and slaughtering anyone in between.
As is the case in both the source material and this adaptation, Howard tells a tale of Earth in the 1600’s where black magic is very real and even more...

Produced by Sergio Leone’s long-term partner, Alberto Grimaldi, and complete with a score by the iconic Ennio Morricone, Face to Face (aka Faccia a Faccia) is an oft-forgotten spaghetti western from Italian director Sergio Sollima, famous for The Big Gundown (1966).
The film focuses on two protagonists; a history professor, Brad Fletcher (Gian Maria Volonté), and an outlaw, Solomon ‘Beauregard’ Bennett (Thomas Milian). Retiring due to ill health, Fletcher moves to Texas but through an act of kindness becomes entangled with an injured Bennett on the run from the law. Lying low, the health of the men improves, and each becomes fascinated by the contrasting persona of the other. Following a shoot-out, Fletcher is allowed to follow Bennett as he regroups with the 'Wild Gang,’ slowly ingratiating himself with the criminal community.
While Fletcher connects with his more sinister and bestial emotions, Bennett undergoes a crisis of conscious and re-evaluates...

Avatar (20th Century Fox) James Cameron beat his own title as box office champ, set with Titanic over a decade ago, with this eye-popping sci-fi epic about a paraplegic Marine name Sully (Sam Worthington), who takes the form of an “avatar,” or virtual being, to go undercover on the planet Pandora, attempting to infiltrate the native Na’vi to gather intelligence that will aid a joint corporate and military operation to rape the planet of its natural resources, destroying its indigenous population in the process. When Sully suddenly “goes native,” he locks horns with the company CEO (Giovanni Ribisi) and his gung-ho commanding officer (Stephen Lang, in a wonderful, scenery-chewing turn from a long-underrated actor). Thought of by many scholars and film buffs as a “game-changer” as much as the first Star Wars film was—and they may be right. While Cameron’s politically-correct...

Solomon Kane Written and Directed by Michael J. Bassett Starring: James Purefoy, Pete Postlethwaite, Max Von Sydow and Rachel Hurd-Wood For those of you not familiar with Solomon Kane as a character, here's a quick lesson: Robert E. Howard, the legendary creator of Conan the Barbarian, created Solomon Kane back in the pulp-era. A 16th century Puritan, with a sombre outlook. A valiant leader and fighter armed with a rapier, a dagger and two flintlock pistols, pale skin, cold eyes, dressed in black, shadowed by a slouch hat. Solomon Kane was once a man of pure evil. Killing and stealing as he pleased. But this life of pillaging and plundering in North Africa in the late 1500's has got the attention of the Devil and the Devil has layed claim to Solomon Kane's tortured and lost soul. The only way for him to save his soul is to redeem himself,...
