My favourite childhood gaming experience.
moviefanintheusa3 November 2009
This game is amazing. Really, you should get it if you don't have it. Although it is ancient now it was amazing when it came out. I believe that this game will always be a classic. It's just as good a Super Mario World or so. When I was young, my friend and I would sit and play this game for hours trying to beat it which we eventually did. It's not nearly as advanced as Super Mario Galaxy, but if you are a fellow Mario fan it is essential. It's fun entertaining and challenging. Everything you could want out of a fantasy game except for good graphics, (well it did come out in 1996.) ROCK ON 4EVA MARIO LUIGI AND YOSHI!!! Nintendo is the best!

Essential Nintendo 64 game.
MovieAddict201625 May 2005
When Nintendo 64 came out Christmas of '96, I remember the hype and anticipation and was surprised to receive one as a present for Christmas the very year news programs were alerting viewers that stores were being raided in search of the systems. It was worse then than now -- remember the Tickle Me Elmo fury? N64 was bigger, and worse.

Anyway, along with the platform was included the essential and unarguably most popular N64 game, "Super Mario 64." This was a breakthrough at the time. Nowadays, it's old-fashioned and the game has been adapted for a hand-held system. Back in 1996 (less than ten years ago mind you) it took a huge system to play the game.

It was breathtaking, then. The three-dimensional, fully-immersible world was amazing and unseen. As a result much of this game is kind of "showy" -- it does attempt to wow and amaze. But it only enriches the game play because Nintendo poured EVERYTHING into making this the most overwhelming game ever at that point in time -- it was awesome.

The game is still a classic and one of the best you'll ever play. Technically speaking it's not your standard Mario game because it's three-dimensional and features more of a plot and more options etc. -- but I like that for what it is. The two-dimensions has its qualities, and so does this.

"Mario 64" is a great game and still one of the best you can ever play. If you have never had a chance to play this, go to Ebay and spend thirty bucks and get an N64 and this game. It's worth it.

A cool Mario game
zaeraali13 December 2014
I enjoyed this game. I did not own it, but it is one of those fun games you can play if you lobe it. The game had good graphics, interesting story, gun levels, and so on. The game does its best to make you have a memorable experience. Even reviews show love for this gem. The levels are creative in their own way and prove you will enjoy yourself against anyone you face. Mario is your man in this game, like always. The controls play put smoothly. The enemies you meet are wimps or require some dexterity. Have fun, you will not be disappointed. Super Mario 64 is jam packed fun and will make you have a lot of fun no matter how problematic things may get.

Super Mario 64 is the first game of Nintendo 64, and certainly one of the best games of that console. The graphics are very good for the beginning of the console. The environment is very beautiful, and the characters are very well-made. The game has cool musics.Despite Mario's idiot voice, the game's sound is perfect. The gameplay is good.Mario had many abilities, specially jumping abilities, such as double jump, triple jump, backward jump, wall kick and backward somersault. And the game is one of the N64 games with the most perfect fun factor.Simply COOL! The overalls are:

GRAPHICS:10/10. SOUND:9/10. GAMEPLAY:9/10. FUN FACTOR:10/10.

My overall for this jewel is 9.5/10.

One of the best games for Nintendo 64

Rated E

I never actually owned a Nintendo 64 but I have played one many times. In my opinion along with Conkers Bad Fur Day, Super Mario 64 is one of the best video games for the Nintendo 64 system.I have played this game plenty of times and its good every time.If you have an N64 and don't have this game you should try to find it.The original Super Mario Bros games were side scrolling video games but Super Mario 64 has a 3D Mario in a nice 3D environment. The game is sort of weird but there is plenty of things you can do in the game. You play as Super Mario and once again you must rescue Princess and the 120 power stars from Bowzer. Now you can do it in a 3D environment.Super Mario 64 is a very fun and good N64 game and I recommend it.

One of the Nintendo 64's best games
The_Wagon24 May 2006
Mario is invited to Princess Peach's castle for cake. When Mario gets there, he finds out that Bowser has kidnapped her! Mario must save the day again. Unlike the 2-D games, Mario can explore anything he wants to. He can just roam around, climb trees trying to look for 1-Ups, find secrets in levels, and more. You can spend four hours in one level. No time limits. There are 16 worlds, with a number of stages, and there are star doors, which you need a certain number of stars to get into. Once you get in these star doors, you must go through a stage and fight Bowser at the end of the stage. To get to certain worlds, you need a number of stars to get in. You enter the world by going through a painting. There is so much stuff to do and so many hours of gameplay, I don't see how anyone could dislike this game. It's great. This launch title is the game that insured gamers that the N64 would have a good life. Every 3D plat-form game we know of has something in common with SM64. Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie are examples that are commonly used. Super Mario 64 is one of the greatest games in the history of 3D games. 10 out of 10. If you have an N64, buy this game. It's hard to find used, because no one's selling this baby for 5 bucks at the pawn shop. A perfect 10.

THE best video game of all time.
Mzo-328 August 2000
Yes, that's right, it is. I firmly believe that the N64 and the weird looking controller were both designed just so this game could be made. It was amazing the first time I saw it, with its huge environments and colorful characters, and its amazing now. The play control is perfect, the graphics are beautiful, and it has that Nintendo charm that is always so intangible but undeniably there. A must have for any N64 owner, and a reason to get an N64 for everyone else.

Most classic and amazing Nintendo 64 game ever!!!!! A must have! if you are a true old Nintendo fan, you own this. And if you don't? Buy it now! Anyone who has anything negative to say about this game can go off themselves. (to put it as nicely as I possibly can). Douche Taco's who talk negatively about this game are just retarded and don't deserve to have hands to play any game at all. This is a classic and very nostalgic. It is just amazing how insanely advanced this game was at its time. People who say stuff about the camera being a little off or the graphics being sorta 'blocky' need to be beat with a bat and then p***ed upon. NO CRAP THE GRAPHICS CAN BE MESSED UP. It was created in 1996 for Christ's sake. It's amazing for that time and it's completely revolutionary (along with Banjo, because that game was awesome as well). I don't know if many people are willing to give this game up though, so if you have a chance, pick it up. Plus, for a child-oriented game, it is pretty tricky! I'll be honest, when I was little I never beat the game. I JUST beat it last year because I dusted off the old Nintendo after rage quitting Call of Duty. GOOD STUFF, A MUST HAVE!

Greatest Nintendo Game OF All Time!
Illyngophobia13 April 2008
When I first got my N64 when I was five or six,I fell in love with it,and my first game was Super Mario 64.And I LOVED IT!The graphics were great for it's time,a good plot, great courses and above all,the best music I heard in a Nintendo game.

I don't remember the plot completely, but I think Princess Peach was kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario has to rescue her.The object of the game is to get 120 stars from the curses in the castle. Each had about five or six challnges to get the stars. There are secert parts of the castle, where you can get more stars. But of course, you have beat Bowser.*I think there are three levels to beat Bowser on* Lets start with the characters.Mario is the main character, and gets helpful advice from Toad,so he is basically one of your only alliances.I heard that Luigi and Yoshi are in the game towards the end.The main villain is Bowser, and there are a bunch of other characters like Boo and Goomba. The characters are really great.

Next, how about the graphics?People say Gameplay is more important then the graphics, and I agree completely. But with he great plot, there are great graphics.Especially for it's time.I have a whole bunch of other Nintendo games like 007 and their graphics don't compare to Super Mario.Bright colors, great effects and awesome sound effects.I found the graphics in the water courses very very good.Next to the Bowser world ones,it has the best graphics in the game.

Now,the music. This is my favorite part of the game.Growing up,when I played this at a young age,I'd gladly leave the game on all night so the music would put me to sleep.Especially the music from Jolly Roger Bay,which was peaceful and wonderful. There are others that are great too, especially in,once again, the worlds with Bowser, are the ones that stick with me the most and are my favorites.

This game was my favorite past time as a developing gamer, and I love it.This game gets 10/10 or *****(5)/*****(5) GO PLAY THE GAME!

Very few hate this, and I'm not one of them
Nic098132319 February 2021
Mario 64 is one of the best games ever. It revolutionized 3D games today, and is also pretty good. The camera is Sonic Adventure level, and the swimming controls are not the best, but it's still fun. The controls are good, the graphics are nice, and the level design is great. And the music, oh the music. It's excellent.

The Greatest Game Ever Created
mussicmann429 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Super Mario 64 is undoubtedly the greatest game ever created. It is so addicting that you could play it for hours upon hours without stopping for a break. I've beaten the game 4 times, but I've never gotten all 120 stars...(I've gotten 111)...but I hope to achieve them eventually. Even though I didn't officially play this game until I was seven in, I loved watching my sisters play it. Now I am 13 and still play this, erasing games and starting over again.

The graphics are unbelievable for an early N64 game. The gameplay is addictive. The controls are great. The levels are tough, but not impossible. The Bowser fights are challenging.

I would like to tell you more, but why don't you just get it for yourself? Put the X-BOX 360, PS3, and the Wii away and go find yourself a Nintendo 64 and play this amazing, wonderful game.

In generally, games rated with looking at the year. Its like xxx game is best game of 2013 but in generally its just a good game. But mario 64 is still feels new in 2022.the mechanics are still really good. The graphics is good for 1990s. The little story is also cool in this days. Soundracks are still fire. Looks like I will still play this game after 60 years lol.

Has aged miserably
Muschglu27 April 2023
I played this classic in 2023 on the Switch and it was a pain.

I also only played it because I wanted to catch up on this classic and I had to struggle through it.

The graphics weren't up to date, of course, but that was obvious. The game is simply no longer worth playing. The character's movements and especially the camera are a disaster. Reasonably estimate the distances and thus reach the platforms, not possible. I will never play again in this form. Maybe Nintendo will give this game a remake, with upgraded graphics, better mobility of the figure and of course a contemporary camera, the game is certainly a ten, but not in this state.

Super Mario world (2d) on the other hand also 2023 playable without problems.

The rebirth of a legend...
JohnnyJohnHildegaard28 June 1999
Mario 64 has enchanted our minds way before Zelda or GoldenEye. It felt so diverse, so powerful, and yet so fun, that you wouldn't let go of your controller. Shigeru Miyamoto did an excellent job of creating Mario in a seamless 3-D world with true freedom. It's one of the best N64 games out there!

A childhood classic
mitsubishizero26 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up playing this game and I have to say it's aged well (for the most part). It's interesting to note that this was a game changer for video games in general. The story's about Mario being invited to Peach's castle in order to have a cake she made for him. When he arrives he finds out that Bowser's trapped her and her friends in her castle. it's up to Mario to save them. In order to do so he has to collect the stars Bowser scattered across the castle so he can venture into the paintings in each and find more stars. While the story's recycled what makes it interesting is the gameplay. it's a 3D world where you can mostly go wherever you want. You can also do several tricks like somersault and leap.

There's so much variety in the levels you can explore, ranging from grasslands to deserts and caves. After you collect a certain amount of stars you then get to face Bowser who drops a key upon being defeated. The graphics are dated but they're still nice to look at. Some of the renders and sprites look wonky like Mario himself but it's not bad. The songs are very memorable. I find myself humming the credits song from time to time. Super Mario 64 is a classic. It has great replay value and something for everyone and I highly recommend it.

A Fun Start For The 3D Mario Games
TheMysteriousReviewer24 June 2021
Super Mario 64 is a really fun start for both Nintendo 64 and the 3D Mario games. Maybe some of the star tasks can make the game a little difficult. But everything else makes the game worth playing thanks to decent gameplay that shows the game designers took their time for the gamers to fully finish the game and get all the stars. But what makes the game great is the story about Mario saving Peach's castle from Bowser's curse. The boss we would get from Bowser is highly exciting. And the graphics hold up as one of the very first 3D video games. Of course, I would recommend this for Mario fans if they still have a Nintendo 64. Or if you have a switch and want to try out the game, get Super Mario 3D All-Stars so you can try it. I remember this as one of the first games I have played in my life along with others like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. And I still had fun playing it to this day. This is one of the great examples of how Nintendo 64 first developed 3D gaming.

Do I really need to say why this game is a modern classic?
The game that revolutionized 3D gaming, the touchstone that catapulted Super Mario into the 32/64-bit era that was the mid/late-90s, and laid-down the ground work for games like Banjo Kazooie, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and of course Grand Theft Auto III. Super Mario 64 is the game that started it all; the granddaddy of open-world sandbox gaming where exploration is the key to all the fun you'll have as a gamer. 22 years on and this game is STILL phenomenal Nintendo gold!

Miyamoto's 64-bit masterpiece
vegetable42013 October 2000
Mario's first foray into the world of 3-dimensions is incredible. Miyamoto's masterpiece was reason enough to buy a Nintendo 64 when it was released in 1996 and it still holds all of it's charm today. This game is an instant classic that set the standard for 3D adventure/platform games.

Nintendo owes itself so much to this golden game.
Super Mario 64 is still a blast to play, to witness, explore, and immerse yourself with. Two decades after its release and fans the world over are still making ROM-hacks of the game on the internet, still playing through the game, making machinima-videos of it, and Mario 64 has been represented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum as an example of how video games can be art.

While the game has effectively been tried and true in nearly every category, it's still influential in game design, keeping public interest in the Mario games thriving, and making fans out of many kids growing up in the 90s like myself. It was the first game I played and it has made me the pop-culture, video game lover that I am today.

real great mario game
ernievader29 March 2008
one of the funnest mario's i've ever played. the levels are creative, there are fluid controls, and good graphics for its time. there's also a multitude of crazy bosses and enemies to fight. Sometimes the levels get frustrating, and if you leave out some of the hard levels and still, need to get more accomplished to fight a boss, it can be annoying. another complaint is the camera angle; though it works fairly well most of the time, it can be a pain in certain situations. if your a big time mario fan; this ones for you. even if your not a huge fan of him, i'd still recommend this one. its a big game, and getting what you need can take a while, but it's very satisfying. good for playing in short bursts of time. it will almost certainly hold your interest; it sure does hold mine!

(serious)One of the best games of all time
edjosephson27 July 2018
Mario 64 is one of the greatest games of all time with amazing controls, graphics(for its time), gameplay, and glitches make the game even better. I have two downsides to this though, the camera is horrible(1996 3D game so what do you expect) and the level design is inconsistent(some great levels and some mediocre). If you have two working hands(played this with a keyboard) then you should either get the rom online or buy an N64 with Mario 64 with it. everyone should have to experience this game someday.

Worst Mario game ever!
sonicsatam198912 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Ugh! this game stinks! The main problem with this piece of crap is that the camera doesn't work. At all. You can never get it to go where you want it and that leads to MANY unavoidable deaths. This game is completely unplayable. Avoid at all costs. The plot is exactly the same as every other Mario game. King Koopa kidnaps princess toadstool and Mario has to save her. Another thing that is very disappointing is that you can't even ride yoshi! This game is worse than the Zelda games on the cd-i. If you want to play a good Mario game stick with super Mario world on the super nes or any of the 3 Mario games on the 8-bit nes. Heck better yet pick up new super Mario bros. wii. This game was early proof that Mario games were never meant to be played in 3D.

Unquestionably the best Mario game of all time in my opinion and one of the best games ever period!
callanvass6 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is unquestionably the best Mario game of all time in my opinion, and one of the best games ever period!. I haven't played this game in a long time since I can't seem to find my Nintendo 64 anywhere, however I played this over and over when I was younger, and if I remember correctly I got to about 90 stars!, plus it starts out fairly easy, however once it goes on you will find that it will become more and more difficult. If I remember correctly you have to beat the main boss 3 times, and it gets harder each time, and I thought the effects were especially well done!, plus I loved the rainbow level as it was a lot of fun, you even get to ride on a magic carpet!. I also loved the level where you get to fight the evil eel!, plus you will never ever get bored with this game, in fact I think it may be my favorite video game ever along with Sonic 2!. The levels are so fascinating as you will really get into the game, and I just loved how you can jump through walls, and pictures!, plus the music is just great!. This is unquestionably the best Mario game of all time in my opinion and one of the best games ever period!, and if you haven't played it and have an N64, what are you waiting for Do so immediately!, you won't regret it trust me, now I have got to find my N64 as soon as possible, so I can play this again! getting to 120 stars won't be easy that's for sure. ***** out of 5
