The director that epitomized the 1970’s, Joseph Sargent, has sadly passed away. (1925-2014)
With a career lasting 50 years, Sargent brought to the big screen such thrilling cinema as The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three, MacArthur, White Lightning and Colossus: The Forbin Project.
Directors Guild of America President Paris Barclay made the following statement upon learning of the passing of director Joseph Sargent:
“When it comes to directing Movies for Television, Joe’s dominance and craftsmanship was legendary – for the past 50 years. With eight DGA Awards nominations in Movies for Television, more than any other director in this category, Joe embodied directorial excellence on the small screen. He was unafraid of taking risks, believing in his heart that television audiences demanded the highest quality stories – whether chronicling uncomfortable historic events like the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study in Miss Evers’ Boys, or compelling personal stories about inspiring individuals like...

It isn’t news to most of us that some cable networks have a target audience, whether or not we agree that their programming actually serves that target. A case in point is Lifetime, which calls itself “female-focused” though my remote hasn’t landed on the channel in years. I’ve heard good things about Witches of East End but honestly haven’t checked it out just because it’s on that Army Wives network.
That may change, now that Lifetime is testing the waters of dystopia with its pickup of the series The Lottery. I can see how it would be considered female-skewed, given that the premise is a lottery to determine who will serve as surrogates for the 100 embryos still in existence, but I’m intrigued that they’re calling it a “conspiracy thriller.” Okay, Lifetime, you have my attention.

Andy Garcia To Embark On New Latino Project
Andy Garcia is again returning to his Latin roots, signing up to be executive producer of a TV movie about the life of a Cuban-American doctor. The picture, by Home Box Office (HBO), is based on Doctor Pedro Jose Greer's 1999 memoir Waking Up In America: How One Doctor Brings Hope To Those Who Need It Most. Greer founded Miami's Camillus Health Concern, a downtown clinic that treats the poor and homeless. This will mark Garcia's second Latino-themed project for HBO - the first being last year's For Love Or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, a film based on the famed Cuban trumpeter's life, which earned Garcia a 2001 Golden Globe nomination. Garcia is currently filming Ocean's Eleven opposite a star-studded cast.
