Thundering typhoons! The adventures of Tintin continue as Steven Spielberg confirms Peter Jackson will direct second film in planned trilogy as pair 'made a deal'
Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are to move ahead with plans for a second film in their planned Tintin trilogy following the success of the first film in the series, Total Film reports.
Jackson will direct the followup to last year's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the title of which has not yet been decided. Spielberg said the New Zealand film-maker would go into production on the sequel immediately after he finishes work on The Hobbit, his current two-part adaptation of the Jrr Tolkien fantasy novel. The film-makers always planned to make a Tintin trilogy together, but were forced to make the films one step at a time after studio Paramount baulked at the prospect of financing three films upfront.

[1] Technically, I guess the PG-13 Grown Ups doesn't really qualify as a kids' film, so its sequel probably won't either. But since that movie centered around five grown men acting like children, I'll say that that this Sequel Bits is all about the young'uns. Peter Jackson, who acted as a producer on the first film, will be at the helm of the upcoming animated follow up while Steven Spielberg will take up an executive producer role. Combining three of Belgian artist Georges "Hergé" Remi's comic stories --The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure -- the film depicts Tintin's first encounter with Captain Haddock and the discovery of a clue to the treasure of his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock. There are a lot of "Tintin" stories to adapt, more than 20 full-length comics produced over 50 years. We're seeing a handful of them in this year's "The Adventures of Tintin" -- stories like "Secrets of the Unicorn," "Red Rackham's Treasure," and "The Crab with the Golden Claws" -- but the producers have their pick of the litter when it comes to considering a sequel.
As the first movie racks up acclaim on its way towards its Christmas release, The Playlist reports that the producers are considering switching up their plan for a trilogy.
"We knew that we needed to introduce Tintin, we needed to introduce the relationship with Haddock, we knew [the dog] Snowy was going to be in it," producer Kathleen Kennedy told them, "so now what we're thinking [for the second film] is what new characters do we want to introduce? Well, we'll probably introduce Calculus and bring him into the fold.

It's never too early to start planning the next "Tintin" adventure!
There have been some rumors about which Tintin stories would be used for future sequels to "The Adventures of Tintin," and now producer Kathleen Kennedy has revealed some details that set the record at least sort of straight, according to The Playlist.
The second "Tintin" movie is currently shaping up to be "The Calculus Affair," which focuses on the kidnapping of the eccentric, hearing-impaired inventor, Professor Calculus. "Calculus" is a personal favorite of Peter Jackson, who plans on directing the second installment.
"The Calculus Affair" would introduce the character of Professor Calculus, as even though he appears in "Red Rackham's Treasure," one of the stories that "The Adventures of Tintin" incorporates (along with "The Secret of the Unicorn" and "The Crab with the Golden Claws"), he doesn't appear in the film.

Aficionados of the Tintin comic books are furious over a film adaptation, which is attracting a new generation of fans. But why can't both sets of fans co-exist?
I haven't seen the Tintin film – not after those reviews! – but a lot of people have. Steven Spielberg's digital animated version of the famous Hergé cycle of comic books has dominated the British box office in spite of articles that branded it a betrayal of the artist-author's vision, a soporific blanded-out parody of Hergé's eccentric world.
Is the gulf between expert disgust and public enthusiasm further proof that critics are doomed? Or that modern culture is truly anti-intellectual and philistine? I think it is evidence of neither. I am sure the Tintin film really is infuriating if you are a Tintin fan, as many who write about it plainly are. But is everyone a Tintin fan? Is everyone that familiar with the quixotic idealism,...

For his work on such titles as Captain America and Daredevil, Ed Brubaker has won the Eisner Awards best writer prize for three of the past five years. Add to that the trophy for Best Comic Book Writer at the recent Spike TV Scream Awards.
Now he is adapting his crime-noir graphic novel Coward into a movie for Hunting Lane Films, with David Slade taking the director's chair.
Coward - the first book in the Criminal series by Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips - tells the story of Leo, a legendary thief who breaks his own life-saving set of rules when he is lured into a risky heist. On the run from cops and double-crossers, Leo must face the violence he's kept bottled up inside for 20 years.
Brubaker told Variety: "It's a good role for any actor; about a guy who's afraid to do things because of what's inside of him.

Tintin (Jamie Bell), Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), Snowy, The Adventures of Tintin Despite a number of positive reviews and solid box office receipts, some in the United Kingdom, where Tintin is apparently a cultural icon, haven't been at all pleased with the way director Steven Spielberg and screenwriters Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish have brought Hergé's intrepid reporter to the big screen. See below a couple of remarks about The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (actually featuring elements from three books: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure). "Coming out of the new Tintin film directed by Steven Spielberg, I found myself, for a few seconds, too stunned and sickened to speak; for I had been obliged to watch two hours of literally senseless violence being perpetrated on something I loved dearly. With any Spielberg movie comes a load of hype. Particularly something that he hasn’t really done before. So does a motion capped, animated Tin Tin live up to the hype? Read on and find out. I’ve never read a Tin Tin book in my life, nor do I have any intention of doing so. That said, I was aware of the Hergé’s character and the stylising around the cartoon / books etc. But other than that I had no idea who Captain Haddock was etc. So when it comes to the characters, I was lost, but thankfully throughout the course of the movie, through albeit brief introductions, the audience gets a grasp of who’s who relatively quickly. From a story point of view (and this is where a little bit of research comes into this review) the movie is based on three specific entries in the Tin Tin series.

Hergé's comic-book hero is one of the great creations of the 20th century. Which makes Spielberg's film version little more than murder, says one lifelong Tintin fan
Coming out of the new Tintin film directed by Steven Spielberg, I found myself, for a few seconds, too stunned and sickened to speak; for I had been obliged to watch two hours of literally senseless violence being perpetrated on something I loved dearly. In fact, the sense of violation was so strong that it felt as though I had witnessed a rape. I use this comparison not as a provocation or to cause unnecessary offence: I am using it in honour of a very good joke made by an episode of South Park, in which the cartoon's children watch the final Indiana Jones film and are so traumatised by what they have seen that they go round to the police station...

Anyone who follows the Daily's coverage-of-the-coverage roundups during festivals that roll out a series of high-profile premieres knows that first impressions don't always stick. So it's with a grain (or two or more) of salt that we dip into these early reviews, and we begin with an entry the New Yorker's Richard Brody posted on Thursday: "The creator of Tintin, Hergé (whom Anthony Lane wrote about in the magazine in 2007), was Belgian, and it's in Brussels that Steven Spielberg's 3D, motion-capture adaptation of the graphic novelist's world, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, premièred on Tuesday morning. (The movie opens in Europe on October 26th, and here on December 21st.) A pair of critics at the capital's newspaper Le Soir, Daniel Couvreur and Nicolas Crousse, waxed enthusiastic: 'We emerged from the theatre with our eyes sparkling like a crystal ball…. Spielberg succeeds, hands down, in making a great popular adventure film,...

Steven Spielberg's ghostly Tintin is best left on the page
When the Belgian animator Hergé died in 1983, he left behind one last, unfinished Tintin adventure. Entitled Tintin and Alph-Art, the story hinged on an evil scheme to abduct Tintin and encase him in liquid polyester. The gallant boy reporter would therefore become a "living sculpture", beautiful but dead. "Your corpse will be displayed in a museum," the villain (according to Hergé's notes) would cackle. "And no one will suspect that the work constitutes the last resting place of Tintin."
Three decades on, this dastardly plot may just have been completed. Out of the blocks comes The Adventures of Tintin, a rip-snorting Indiana Jones-style romp from director Steven Spielberg, darting from the cobbled streets of Paris to the bazaars and hill towns of north Africa in search of buried treasure. On the face of it, all is well. But...

In the new Steven Spielberg film The Adventures of Tintin, Captain Haddock has a Scottish accent. An odd thing for a Belgian
Age: First appeared in 1941. So, 70.
Appearance: Seafarer! Bluejacket! Blustering boat-dweller!
Whoa, calm down. Who is this guy? Imbecile! Dilettante! Troglodyte!
He's an idiot? No, you are, for not knowing who Captain Haddock is.
Why, who is he? He's a retired multi-millionaire sailor and adventurer who just happens to be Tintin's best mate. What he isn't, and until last week had never been, is Scottish.
What happened last week? They released the trailer for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, directed by Steven Spielberg, due out here in the autumn. It stars a motion-captured Haddock voiced by Andy "Gollum" Serkis with, horror of horrors, a Scottish accent.
That's stupid! He's a Cornish sea dog! Illiterate! Abecedarian! Poppycock peddler!
He's not? Not in Hergé's originals, no.

We're still half a year away from Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn , but now, thanks to Richard Bacon's Radio 5 (via Bleeding Cool ), we know that not only is novelist Anthony Horowitz part of the writing team, but the focus (and title) of the sequel is Prisoners of the Sun . It is almost certain that the script will include both parts, retaining the title of the latter. (Much like the first film, which adapts both Hergé's "The Secret of the Unicorn" and "Red Rackham's Treasure," using the title of the former). "The Seven Crystal Balls" was...

Currently ranked #3 at the Top 50 Hitlist, Jamie Bell is one of the most consistent young actors today - his role in Defiance may not be as meaty as Daniel Craig's but he was able to pull it off and put his level of acting at par with his more illustrious co-stars. He also made waves in Hallam Foe, from Scottish filmmaker David McKenzie - this film, I believe, is Bell's best movie to date.

- - - Tintin the movie is going to be Jamie Bell's next big project - perhaps as big as Billy Elliot or maybe not:
As Tintin, Jamie Bell has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Working with Spielberg with a huge budget and an internationally famous character could springboard Bell into Hollywood’s A-List. Becoming an action film hero and a sex symbol along the lines of Harrison Ford and Matt Damon is entirely possible.
