Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to talk to them directly!
Today is one of those glorious days. Conor and I are joined by Guy Pearce, the incomparable actor who’s got a new film coming out in theaters – Memory (April 29th!) – and plenty of accomplished past work to dig into as well.
We focus on The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hard Word, and Lockout (a.k.a. Space Jail). Plenty more is touched on in our 25 minutes of Guy Talk. Pearce explains his disappointment in Gillian Armstrong’s Death Defying Acts getting buried by Harvey Weinstein fifteen years ago, gets honest about certain movies he deems his “divorce films,” and highlights other B-Sides he’d...

For a show that was run without a live crowd, Aew delivered with its latest episode of Dynamite on TNT. Aew utilized Daily’s Place, a concert venue in Jacksonville, Fla. owned by the Khan family, and only wrestlers and essential personnel were allowed into the venue. Everyone who entered the building was also examined by medical staff before entering.
Aew took some lessons from WWE on the empty-arena concept and corrected some of the issues WWE had with Raw and SmackDown. First, Aew did technically have people in the crowd. An outside audience wasn’t allowed in, but Aew had the wrestlers not involved in the match on the outside of the guardrail yelling and creating an atmosphere during the matches.
On top of that, this episode of Dynamite was insanely newsworthy.
First, Brodie Lee was revealed as the exalted one and the leader of the Dark Order. Lee...

‘Hilary Davis’
Bankside Films co-managing director Hilary Davis has stepped down after 11 years at the company and is taking a “break” from the industry after 35 years in the business.
The industry veteran will not remain a shareholder at Bankside, which she set up in 2007 alongside company director Stephen Kelliher with backing from Head Gear Films MD Phil Hunt.
Davis, who stepped down at the end of 2017, told Screen: “After 35 years in the film industry at HandMade Films, Alibi Communications, Beyond Films and Bankside Films, I felt it was an appropriate time for me to take a break. I wish everyone well at Bankside Films for their continued success.”
Kelliher will oversee management of Bankside going forward and will remain as director. Hunt will continue as MD of both Bankside and financier Head Gear. There are no plans to replace Davis and there was no further comment from the...

Watch Three Clips from Accidental Exorcist: “All Richard really wants is to finish his book but fate dealt him a very strange hand – he is a natural born Exorcist. In fact, he is the best there ever was and with possessions on the rise across the city, he’s booked solid. Reluctantly, he faces the fact that performing exorcisms is the only thing he’s truly good at even though it’s wearing him down and making his life utterly miserable. Case after case, he stares evil incarnate in the face, taking on satanic forces to help those in need. However, he soon finds his power...

When Sam shows up at your door, usually your luck has officially run out, but Mezco Toyz’s Sam doll is an exception to that rule. Accompanying Sam in today’s Horror Highlights, we have a new clip from Me and My Mates Vs. The Zombie Apocalypse, a trailer for the short film Bad Acid, and Echoes graphic novel cover art and release details.
Mezco Toyz’s Trick ‘R Treat Doll: From Mezco Toyz: “He may look like a child dressed for trick or treating, but Sam is the personification of Halloween itself.
Straight from the film Trick ‘r Treat comes Sam, the enforcer of the rules of Halloween. Beneath his apparently innocent scarecrow mask is his misshapen, demonic head. Part pumpkin, part supernatural being, Sam shows no mercy to those who show disrespect to his holiday.
Sam comes complete with his infamous and mysterious sack and his deadly oversized lollipop.

The Collective announced a digital and DVD release for Crawl on February 26th. Following the recently released clips and photos, we’ve been given a brand new clip to share with readers.
“Written and directed by Paul China, and produced by brother Ben China, Crawl has been invited to over 30 festivals thus far. The film has been compared to the works of the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men and Blood Simple), Hitchcock and Polanski. Crawl, the debut feature film of the two brothers, showcases the work of rising talented filmmakers, unafraid to leap beyond the normal and expected to give audiences a deep, emotional, and horrific escape. The film is about a murder-for-hire gone bad which lands an innocent waitress hostage in her own home and driven to desperate measures for survival. Veteran Australian producer Al Clark will receive the Aacta Raymond Longford Award in recognition of his three-decade career which has included iconic films such as Chopper and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Clark, who emigrated from the UK in the 1980s after representing music acts such as the Sex Pistols and Phil Collins, has produced or executive produced 19 feature films. He has also served on the board of the Australian Film Commission (1989-1992) and participated in official juries of several international film festivals, including the San Sebastian and Valladolid Film Festivals.

It’s certain that many will rush to compare A&E’s summer series Longmire to Cc-favorite Justified, solely on the basis of a law-enforcement protagonist who wears a cowboy hat and a heap of stoicism. Hell, we did so ourselves. But as it turns out, Longmire is well worth your trouble, even if only because it will tide you over until Justified season 4.
Longmire takes place in rural Wyoming, and it looks to me as though it’s shot there, allowing for some lovely scenery of a lot of wide-open and lonely vistas, which is fitting given our protagonist. Sheriff Walt Longmire is a quiet man, one whom we can tell within the first few minutes of last night’s premiere is in a lot of emotional pain. But as you might guess with a small-town rural sheriff, Longmire is unwilling and perhaps even unable to deal with anything...

Guy Pearce Also To Star
I dunno who this kid’s agent is, but he’s underpaid.
It’s reported today that international heartthrob Robert Pattinson has signed on for The Rover, which will also co-star Australia’s own Guy Pearce (it’s his adopted homeland, anyway). This news comes hot on the heels of Pattinson’s being cast in Mission: Blacklist as the man who tracked down another international heartthrob, former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. And though we admitted to finding that particular project to be interesting–or at the very least, more interesting than Pattinson’s regular romantic fare–the interest we might have in Mission: Blacklist is so paled by our interest in The Rover as to be almost translucent.
Pattinson and all his dreamy good looks aside, there are two much bigger reasons that we’re all gung-ho on The Rover already, and it’s safe...

We reveal the 10 debut films jostling for the big prize, ranging from a thriller about aliens in London to a documentary about Danish soldiers in Afghanistan
On Friday, we announced the shortlist for the Guardian first album award; today it's the turn of the first film. Previous winners have included The Arbor, Unrelated and Sleep Furiously; this year, after exhaustive polling of the Guardian's film writing team, the 10 debut films jostling for the big one take in everything from an alien-attack thriller set in London to a Danish Afghan-war documentary. We will lock the judges – who include Guardian film team Peter Bradshaw, Xan Brooks and Catherine Shoard – in a room next week, and hammer out a result. The winner will receive a handsome piece of glass and plastic purchased, as Michael Hann revealed on Friday, from the trophy shop round the corner. Nevertheless, bragging rights will be awesome.

This study of a dysfunctional crime family on the verge of imploding is tense, violent and supremely watchable
A kingdom of wounded and dying animals – that is, animals of the most vicious, dangerous kind – is what director David Michôd portrays here, and this is maybe the nearest we're going to get to an Australian GoodFellas. It is a tense, violent and supremely watchable crime drama, set in the bluecollar-gangland of Melbourne and starring Guy Pearce and Ben Mendelsohn, reviving memories of Eric Bana in Chopper and Scott Roberts's Australian heist thriller The Hard Word.
Michôd begins his movie with the queasiest touch of gallows humour: we seem to be watching bored teen Joshua Cody, known as J, played by James Frecheville, emotionlessly watching TV on the couch next to his sleeping mom. Yet the succeeding scene shows that this is not exactly what is happening, and J is sent to live with his cousins,...

Prom
Opens: April 29th 2011
Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.
Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.
It's all very "The Breakfast Club" meets "10 Things I Hate About...

400 Screens, 400 Blows is a weekly column that takes an in-depth look at the films playing below the radar, beneath the top ten, and on 400 screens or less.
State of Play (240 screens) continues playing this week, and despite its lukewarm performance and reviews, something about it makes me happy. In mid-2003, I got myself into hot water with a Russell Crowe fan club. I reviewed a very minor film called The Hard Word, starring Guy Pearce, who of course had been Crowe's co-star in L.A. Confidential (1997). I took the opportunity to compare the two actors, praising Pearce for his work in interesting films like Ravenous and Memento, and questioning the much more fashionable Crowe. I did this mainly because I was irritated at the enduring popularity of two terrible films, the sludgy, brooding mess Gladiator (2000) and the manipulative Oscar bait A Beautiful Mind (2001).
