Look out: John Carpenter's chilly tale of shape-shifting chaos at the South Pole creeps back with a new transfer and two fully stocked discs of extras old and new, including the bowdlerized Network cut, just for laughs. The picture still works like gangbusters -- the best monsters are still the gooey, rubbery pre-cgi kind. Almost as scary as the alien parasite in John Carpenter's The Thing is the barren, brutally cold landscape surrounding the isolated characters. With The Thing being released on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory on October 11th, we've been provided with an exclusive behind-the-scenes Blu-ray clip in which actors Joel Polis, Peter Maloney, and Thomas G. Waites discuss filming in the arctic conditions.

A new documentary focuses on John Carpenter’s classic sci-fi horror film The Thing. This movie scared the shit out of me when I first saw it when I was growing up. This film is so incredible in so many ways, especially with the use of practical effects. It’s some of the best that we’ve ever seen on film.
This doc is called The Thing: Terror Takes Shape, and it was created by Daniel Barros. It focuses on the making of the horrific and intense thriller. It basically offers fans everything they ever wanted to know about The Thing, so it’s definitely worth watching when you get a chance.
Boing Boing recently posted a tribute the 1982 film, and had a quote from Richard Kaufman recalling how the movie come out of nowhere, and then over time grew into the awesome cult classic film that it became:

So there’s this horror movie competition that takes place on Facebook every October, and this is my first year participating. I’m still a little lost, so bear with me. I have watched more than this, but these are the movies I watched during the week of Oct 4th – October 11th, the first official week of The Madness. I hope I can squeeze some more in this week, but having a 4 year old makes that tough to do. I think I had a pretty good week considering all obstacles. Plus, I saw some great stuff this week. Some revisits that I try to do annually, as well as some new movies, not released to theaters yet.
Late Phases (2014) – 2 pts
Director: Adrián García Bogliano
Easily misunderstood, but still solid. We don’t get much in the way of werewolf horror, so it’s good to support it when we do.
