Chicago – The 44th edition of the Non-Equity Jeff Awards were given out on June 5th, 2017, at what insiders call “the theater prom.” The event honors the non-union smaller or “storefront” theater companies, and their efforts to produce quality stage work. Hosted in grand style by Alexis Roston and Lillian Castillo, the recipients of the top play was “At the Table” by the Broken Nose Theatre and top musical was “High Fidelity” by the Refuge Theatre Project.
The night was a raucous affair at Chicago’s Anthenaum Theatre, as the hosts kept the party going between recognitions. Excerpts (Plays) and songs (Musicals) were presented for each of the top ten nominated shows. A Special Award for Theatrical and Charitable Contributions was given to David Cerda, acknowledging his long career and (as the inscription on the award said) thanking him “… for ‘Dragging’ the Chicago Theatre world into your ‘Hell in a Handbag’ with humor,...

Downton Abbey Season Two ($49.99 BluRay; PBS)
Poldark The Complete Collection ($79.99; Acorn) -- Don't tell my mother, but Downton Abbey has swiftly declined from a pale imitation of the original Upstairs Downstairs to a pale imitation of Falcon Crest. She's enjoying the show but I quickly switched from eagerness to see if the second season could build on the over-praised first to laughter at its foolishness to boredom. The first season lifted entire plot lines from U/D (and shamelessly from Mrs. Miniver) but it was fun. This season it has gone completely off the rails, with episodes ending with soap-like revelations (complete with "da-dum!" foreboding musical cues), characters behaving utterly without rhyme or reason from one moment to the next. Why, for example, has Isobel Crawley gone from a sensible if blunt woman to a blithering idiot? The plot twists come so fast and furious all you can do is laugh.

After making its way around the internet Wednesday, video of the fire alarm that interrupted Brian Williams' NBC Nightly News broadcast Tuesday, Nov. 29, got even more airtime with a segment on Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. Photos: The Most Talked-About TV News Faces The comedian mocked Williams, who said to viewers Tuesday, "You'll forgive us, we have a fire alarm going off here in the studio" before attempting to continue delivering the night's news despite buzzing and emergency announcements playing in the background. Well, not everything went exactly as my nomination votes would have indicated, which is how it should be, but the nominations for the first Critics' Choice Television Awards are here.
ABC is going to love the fact that they received the most nominations, but let's keep that in perspective, because Modern Family received six of those sixteen nods. And, while there might be strong overall numbers for the big networks, cable actually seems to dominate the list. For example, only two of the ten nominees for Best Drama Series are on "regular" television, and three of them are on AMC. No one nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series is on "regular" television.
The nominations are definitely interesting.
Take a look and let me know your thoughts. How did your favorite shows stack up?

Each of these celebs put their own unique spin on this Burberry jacket — but who stood out more?
Kate Bosworth and Monica both stepped out in this beautiful cropped leather Burberry Prorsum jacket on the same exact day, Feb. 21! Kate glammed up the stylish jacket in London at the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2011 presentation, where she paired it with a studded skirt from the brand and quilted booties for a fashionable and more upscale look.
On the other hand, Monica dressed the jacket down when she made an appearance at the 1st Annual Cartoon Network’s ‘Hall of Game’ Awards in Santa Monica, California. She created a casual yet chic ensemble by wearing it with denim leggings, a white t-shirt, an Alexander McQueen printed scarf, and Christian Louboutin stacked platform heels.
While both ladies look fantastic, I think Monica’s more laid-back look suited this jacket better — the colors all look great together,...

Astronomy 101 was one of my favorite classes freshman year of college. Fully understanding that I was just one of six billion flesh sacks scuttling across a small rock orbiting a medium sized star on the outskirts of one of millions of galaxies expanding infinitely outward was incredible. Though it fills Alfie in Annie Hall with dread, this realization gave me a joyous freedom that is hard to describe. Earth and Space does its best to keep you from any embarrassing college-freshman existential revelations, although it will function as the informational equivalent of Astro 101 and Geology 101.
Earth and Space is comprised of the first seasons of History Channel’s How the Earth Was Made and The Universe. The inimitable Neil Pedley has already reviewed How the Earth Was Made for this website, and I refer you to his excellent review for info on that half of this box set. So, The...

"This show is kind of offensive," texted one event worker, soberly looking out at the swarms of 20-somethings bobbing somewhere between euphoria and intoxication, as scantily clad trapeze artists and death-defying gymnasts and Parisian burlesque dancers made their way on stage, one after the next. Likely, the worker wasn't actually too disgruntled over the political incorrectness of it all--just feeling dispirited that she couldn't partake in the revelry that was The Most Interesting Show in the World.

Christoph Waltz was named best supporting actor for his performance as a cruelly seductive Nazi in "Inglourious Basterds" as the 82nd Annual Academy Awards got under way Sunday. The Austrian-born actor used his moment in the spotlight to pay tribute to the movie's director, Quentin Tarantino, saying "with his unorthodox methods of navigation, this fearless explorer took this ship ... and brought it in with flying colors and that's why I'm here."Tarantino, though, was denied the best original screenplay Oscar, which went to Mark Boal for "The Hurt Locker.""You honor me and humble me with this," Boal said. Returning as a reporter from Iraq, he had an idea for a movie. But "the results wildly exceeded my expectations," he said -- a fact he attributed to the talent of director Kathryn Bigelow. The writer also offered a word for the troops, present and past, and well as his father,...

The experience of watching Gamer is like being thrown into the middle of a violent, confusing video game without any instructions. It's a nonsensical movie full of nonstop action and over-the-top violence, jitterly and disorientingly directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor as if they've had about five cups of coffee too many and shot the film while suffering from caffeine intoxication and a serious case of Add, and apparently edited using a Cuisanart food processor. You like guns? There's plenty of 'em in this flick! You like to see people get shot? There's plenty of that, too! You enjoy explosions? There's one every other minute here! However if you fancy plot, characterization and a story/script that makes sense and has a purpose, you might dislike Gamer as much as I did. It's a video game masquerading as a movie-one that treats such insignificant elements and cinematic fundamentals as plot,...
