Reality TV - Ghost Investigations
gotto-family13 May 2006
A reality show that documents the efforts of part-time ghost hunters. The group of individuals, called TAPS, and led by Grant and Jason, Roto-Rooter Plumbers full-time, are called upon to investigate private homes and public buildings by those who believe they are experiencing supernatural phenomenon. The ghost-hunters employ what they perceive as a scientific approach to investigation of the paranormal. Psychics are seldom in accompaniment and cameras and various other recorders and filming devices are used in the examination of the various sites that the Hunters choose to investigate. Given the minimal amount of "scientific" evidence of haunting that is obtained, it is easy to recognize that the show is not completely staged. In fact, the plugs for Roto Rooter and meetings with family members by the investigators are the only obvious staged filming. Oddly enough, the camera personnel often focus on the TAPS members during moments of supernatural occurrence rather than zooming in on the ghostly activities.

The show has soap opera like qualities as much as soap opera has life-like qualities. The show focuses not only on ghost hunting, but also on the personal squabbles and bickering among TAPS members.

The TAPS members are very down-to-earth, but professional and committed to helping those who are alarmed or curious about potential haunts. Its not long that you become acquainted with the central characters, Brian, Steve, Grant, and Jason, and familiar with their personal pitfalls and strengths.

Occasionally the show manifests its quest for ratings, but seldom delivers anything that will make your heart peak the Richter scale. You will either grow to love or hate the characters, and expect disappointment in the way of ghost investigation after repeated viewing.

Did "Ghost Hunters" start honest and become rigged later?
amanda545816 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Ghost Hunters regularly for a year or two with my son. I was fascinated with the debunking and scientific methods used. I really liked the way Jason (?) the leader anyway dealt with conflicts, open and upfront about his thoughts, etc. I wanted to tape one show in particular to show co-workers and subordinates how conflict management should be done. During that time, debunking was the rule and ghosts were scarce. Mostly it would be a voice on a tape or balls moving around. Then, last season, all of a sudden ghosts became plentiful, but never on tape. Jason and his 2nd in command walked into a hallway and came rushing back and carefully told what they saw independent of each other, as though that proved it wasn't a concocted story. I don't know, it just seemed so sudden, as though the show didn't stand on it's feet as it was. Manifestations can turn out to be anything, some an outside investigator wouldn't be able to get at. For example, I thought I had a ghost taking a few steps in my bedroom as I went to sleep. There'd be vibration and sound similar to when my husband came to bed only it'd just be one, two three steps. My heart sometimes goes irregular in rhythm. One night, when I heard the "footsteps", I also felt a familiar tapping inside my back, in time with the "footsteps". Now, I don't hear my "ghost" anymore. :( Amanda

Music
lovejim-7409112 July 2021
I understand the music is to add to the drama of the shows that you make and the series. But when they're trying to talk and tell their story to other people you have this music in the background that is drum beats or whatever and it's irritating because at times you're drowning out what people are saying or what they are hearing. So I know whoever created the music is quite proud of it but you need to limit it to just scenes where no one is talking are trying to listen for a certain noise. Otherwise I greatly enjoy this series in your shows and I also enjoy the fact that you debunk some of the things that you run into. Please continue with your series.

Patience is a Virtue
lmcarriere18 April 2006
Compared to all other shows in this genre this one takes the cake so to speak. They are better than all the other ones for one simple reason. This show doesn't go out trying to make things happen just to keep the viewer entertained. TAPS goes out with an objective view to validate their own subjective opinions. If you want to see just the highlights of what they have found, go to the website.

Sure, some episodes come out with nothing at all. But they compliment this with emphasis on genuine character relationships and development (if you watch them in series). Then when you come across some of the episodes where unexplainable (and in some cases unbelievable) things occur, you appreciate them all that more because you know it isn't staged or a hoax. I wish I had the sci-fi channel just for this. I would strongly recommend the DVD's whether your just superstitious or a full fledged hunter yourself.

I have been a Ghost Hunters fan since the first season and I am now addicted to it. This show is the most interesting show on today. I love spending my nights watching them. This is the first paranormal show that I believe to have genuine footage and experiences. Grant, Jason and the rest of the TAPS Crew are amazingly funny and honest people. Not only do they give you real experiences but you get a good giggle out of some of their reactions. They don't go in to find a ghost they are there to investigate and "debunk" what is being seen. I you believe then you must watch. This program is not just a program it is an awesome experience.

Original show was great! New one = sucks!
marrowmovies13 October 2019
The new GH is awful. Predictable, fake, and lots of misinformation. The cast is for the most part pretty annoying and the show maintains none of the integrity of the original. Thankfully Ghost Nation is much, much better and true to the original GH. I made it through 1.5 episodes of the new GH and couldn't take anymore of it. Abysmal.

Episode full of tomfoolery
eilandbrandon4 June 2023
I watched season 2 episode 3 of the reboot and it mirrors the tv show mountain men. Why? The preview for the episode filled with suspense showing all of the bad things that's happening to them. It's weird that they only showed them asking 3 of the members their opinion on if they should continue the investigation. Which the preview made the episode look like it was full of action and the episode is a let down. When they're talking about something hitting their vehicle and showing the damage, you can clearly see that their tire caught the metal object, which then dragged the object across the quarter panel which is why there's scratches that are making an arch and the tire sent the object flying away from the road. I work in the autobody repair industry so I see weird things like this all of the time. Also that security was way over the top. Last but not least the falling scene. You can see that she missed the step which made her body go down but as she was falling down her feet caught the next step and since her body has the momentum of going down, that momentum had nowhere to go but forward, her body continued to go forward which is how she went from going down to going down head first. When she stated how her body looked as it was going down, it looked like someone pushed her but that was because her hands were still on the railings. I can say the same thing, I never fell down the stairs in my life but one time I did but it wasn't serious. To me this episode was just for gaining more viewers.

It's not the ghosts, it's the team.
doombuggy120 October 2019
I have to admit that I loved Ghost Hunters when it first premiered in 2004. My 2 cents is that when GH first began, they took some time to put some interpersonal relationship coverage between team members. The viewer got to know them. There was some drama that played out, and that helped you see these people as fairly earnest as far as what they were doing. And they disproved hauntings as well as finding some evidence. Eventually, the team bled members through being greedy and starting another show, and some actual drama between team members and the production company. Once they brought in ghost hunting dog, it was the beginning of the end.

I like Grant, but there is no chemistry with this new 2019 team. There is no banter, and they seem to be extremely interested in showing off their "new and improved" tech. There is also a lot more "what was that," where the viewer hears or sees nothing, but the team members mysteriously do. Ghost Hunters now seems to be channeling "Most Haunted." I don't see a long run with this incarnation of the show.

A great ghost hunting show...
Happy19811 June 2006
For anyone who is the slightest bit interested in the paranormal, this is a great show. Unlike some ghost hunting shows, that shall remain unnamed, this show is not the least bit cheesy, overly dramatic, or unrealistic. The ghosthunters go out of their way to disprove activity before they actually confirm a haunting. On some other ghost hunter show, the hunters will jump, scream, or freak out when they hear the slightest noise or they are constantly feeling "breezes", "breaths", etc. This show is not like that which is why I think it makes it a great show. The hunters don't overreact and are pretty level-headed when confronted with activity. So, when they actually do come up with activity and confirm that it is paranormal, you know that they aren't just making it up for dramatic purposes.

Just a great all-around show!

Loved it as a kid; finding it meh as an adult.
chelseaholloway2 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To start, I love that all the episodes are available to stream on Discovery+ now. I haven't gotten caught up on the reboot seasons yet, but I was a super fan of the original series back in the day and am currently rewatching it. Granted, I'm still on the 1st season, but I'm really questioning why I loved this show so much as a kid. Maybe because everything is more believable when you're 13. They pride themselves on taking a scientific approach to paranormal investigation, trying to debunk as much as they can in their quest to capture irrefutable proof of a haunting. But they go about it like such amateurs! They bring like 15 people to an investigation, which is insane to me as an adult now. How can you properly investigate anything when you have that many people crammed into one small space? Maybe for some of these bigger venues, like Eastern State Penn, having a big crew makes sense. But for these smaller ones it's laughable. I swear there's like 8-10 min of footage from the actual investigation, which is mostly just them aimlessly roaming around in groups and asking each other, "Did you hear that?" over and over. And the rest of the episode is just their petty and probably staged crew drama plus them setting up/tearing down their equipment and discussing their "evidence". I was personally offended by the episode with that guest book with the pen that supposedly moved by itself. They put the pen back and then came back later to find it had "moved" again. But they didn't think to set up a camera to see if they could get evidence of it moving?? You know, the thing they're literally there to do?? Even the Ghost Adventures crew would have thought to do that. In the pilot episode, they captured some of the most clear and vivid EVPs I've ever heard, plus caught that chair move in the attic. That episode was compelling. But the rest of season 1 has been unimpressive. Makes you wonder if they faked that pilot so the show would get picked up. I know it's not realistic to expect them to capture that kind of evidence on every investigation, and it would honestly be hard to believe if they did, but it seems like they would capture a lot more if they actually took a professional approach to investigating instead of acting like a bunch of giggly teenagers walking around a graveyard at night. I feel like Grant and Jason really take it seriously, but their biggest downfall was having that big ass crew. The show would have been a lot better if it had just been them and maybe 2 or 3 others. I'm interested to see what the reboot seasons will be like.

If you boil down all the talk, it's guys walking around going "did you hear that" or "did you see that".....in the dark, shining flashings, "seeing" things the viewer of the show never does. Can't imagine this show has any credibility with anyone.

Best Paranormal Investigations show compared to the two others
phrixion6 May 2008
I've watched all episodes of Paranormal State and tried to watch every episode of Most Haunted and can say that Ghost Hunters is the best paranormal investigations show on TV.

Why? You can read my reviews of the other shows on their IMDb pages, as I won't put them here. Ghost Hunters methodology for the show is simple, honest and straight forward. They don't have a person whose screams becomes annoying after two episodes and a unbelievable psychic like the show on the travel channel. They also don't emphasize any specific religions or make the show more than it really is about such as the one on A&E, however the one on A&E is decent, as they do go about and try to help people, a great aspect of the show.

Ghost Hunters uses technology, parapsychology and objective evidence to make even the skeptic look twice. That's what good about the show, they don't try to over dramatize anything or fill it with hammy psychic readings and whatnot. They are normal people going in to do honest investigations.

I think Ghost Hunters is the best paranormal investigations show on TV, they are honest and out there to help people, but most of all is out there to increase public awareness. Like any show it has its slow episodes and there's some drama between the crew, however, on this show, they seem to always be trying to educate themselves and others, and really trying to help people. They've even had a fund raiser to restore a very historical and haunted location, some of the aspects that makes this show and the people in it very good.

Lost all entertainment value
djbbeary16 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I finally watched the two part episode for the current season. I cry foul!! Sure, I used to believe in this show until one of the live Halloween shows cut back too early and caught the team laughing. They immediately stopped and said "did you hear that?" From that point on, I watched purely for entertainment. Never liked Jason but always liked Grant. This new team has taken some getting used to but I was warming up to them. Well, this episode in Clifton, AZ would have been great if it had not been messed up by Kristen "falling" or "being pushed" on the stairs in the Clifton Hotel. This investigator was wearing boots with heels on them! First, how can you hear footsteps when her heels are clomping all around? Second, how can she walk safely IN THE DARK while wearing heels? And as for the stairs incident, I feel it was a misstep which was aggravated by the heels. Geez girl....try to make it more believable! Drop her from the team as she is nothing but a fashion statement.

Great show!
JDM6715 November 2004
Ghost Hunters is a great show! One of the few on TV that I look forward to nowadays. Its entertaining and fun and has a way of making you feel like you are going on the adventure with them every week. The Taps members all seem cool and what I like about them is they don't sugarcoat things. If they find no evidence, they don't pretend to! They are upbeat and honest and truly have one of the better shows on television right now.

So congratulations to Jason, Grant, Brian and all the rest! Keep up the good work and lets keep this show on the air!

Science + the supernatural
agent57-14 February 2007
I love ghost shows, but there are so many out there that have slow motion replays of every single piece of dust that catches the light and is labeled an orb. Not to mention the shows where the investigators freak out about every noise and cite every draft as irrefutable proof of a haunting. Or the shows with psychics and spirit guides...

The really great thing about Ghost Hunters is that the TAPS team goes into a job as skeptics. They believe in this stuff, but they try to disprove it as much as possible. If they find a weird light phenomenon, they try to recreate it before saying "Yeah, that's weird."

They apply science to ghost hunting, and as a result the stuff they can't disprove is even more creepy and cool. They've gotten some really interesting EVPs and thermal footage.

This is definitely the best ghost hunting show on television.

Love Show...Hate Camera / Cinematography
dshanna-321448 November 2019
Enjoying the new Ghost Hunters show and staff. However I wish they would please, please, please change the shooting style of the cameras! I don't know much about cameras, filming styles and the filming industry so forgive me if I lack the knowledge of its terminology and if my expression is over-simplistic. I feel that most of the time, the camera shots are disorienting, dizzying, and all around confusing and unpleasant to view. The (too) close-ups, off-center angles and up-shot camera views, split screens, etc., are not expressions of creativity as I suspect they're meant to be...it's simply off-putting and irritating.

I think the simple camera style of the old Ghost Hunters made the show feel more authentic and engaging. It makes the audience feel like they're in the room with the cast. I feel that this new format is just alienating its viewers. Does anyone else agree with this?? I hope Grant will read this and give it some consideration because I'd hate to see the show's ratings plummet because some irritating camera work (remember the camera work in the Blair Witch? Yuck!) turned off some viewers. I like the new cast, although I miss the old cast, too! Would like to see the renewal of this show but am frequently put off by the camera work.

Another reboot?!?!?
CinemaSlant24 November 2019
Man...how many times are they going to reboot this show? Clearly the people running Discovery thinks there is viewership attached to the name because its definitely not the quality of the show. 14 years ago this might have been interesting but the field has changed. At least the premiere episode had Amy and Adam from Kindred Spirits show up...and Dustin returned which offered some interest...because Jason, Steve and Tango are just boring. I dont see this lasting. Just like GhostHunters on A&E didn't last. Now that Discovery acquired the name...I dont see this lasting either.

Been a fan for YEARS BUT
kimberlyStub19 September 2019
Im trying hard to get used to the new crew, it'll take time, missing the old BUT out of all those in the new crew, the blond girl is driving me NUTS! She's a bit arrogant and unprofessional and would really love that to change as i almost don't want to watch anymore. ALSO the new crew needs to get in there and get some work done! They are too quiet and don't appear to do much for the show, at least nothing compared to the old crew. Seems like the show "wraps up" without much to talk about. Still and will always love you Grant! Don't let your absence frome home over the years eat at you. You can't go back and redo, so just move forward as you are and stay positive <3 You've had a great life and I know your fam has as well just because of you 😀

Freaking joke
cardkleener22 February 2020
What a bunch of f'n clowns. This is possibly the WORST show I've ever seen. What a complete scam. A complete waste of time. It's so beyond stupid. My favourite quotes. " Did you hear/see that?!" Ahhh NO! "We don't speak German but our machines do," OMFG SERIOUSLY?! When you're not filming are on telephones calling old ladies about an inheritance? I don't know if Grant Wilson has ever been in prison but he sure looks like an ex con. Probably fraud of some type. Are the "clients" paid to not laugh? Do they make more money by holding a serious face for long periods of time? These clowns are worse than Nigerian scammers. Unfortunately I have to give it one star. They don't have an option to put it ten under.

Nothing really happens and I like it that way
madwalaszek17 August 2021
I think in terms of ghost hunting shows, this one is the most tolerable and its definitely a favorite of mine to watch on sick days. The investigators for the most part aren't super annoying to watch, which is better than many other reality tv shows! There's a sense of predictability that makes this a great comfort show - they go to a spooky place, you hear some legends, they investigate, they find "evidence" (usually something like a supposed footstep or phantom voice) and they move on to the next one. There's no suspicion that they're faking evidence because to be honest, what they catch is too boring to be faked. Its not scary, but it can be spooky when you're watching late at night. I think if you enjoy a good ghost story and need something to play in the background, Ghost Hunters is a great option. Ghost Hunters International is also fun as it shows even more historic locations. If you want a fantastic ghost hunting show, I recommend Buzzfeed Unsolved Supernatural.

A new generation of finding nothing
jfost7511 September 2019
I remember enjoying this show in the early days, however now it's basically just a new group of marginally employed people standing around in the dark. Now they even have a therapist on the team, I cant imagine its helped her business much, unless shes a pet therapist. I hate to admit it but I actually get more enjoyment from watching the over the top dramatics of ghost adventures.

Liked it at first
sebpopcorn17 July 2013
I liked this show when it first appeared but over the years it has gone downhill and is now not worth watching. I think the reason I liked it at first was because they seemed quite honest and sometimes said they had found nothing at all. They also don't use mediums unlike most other similar shows.

There were a few bits of the early shows that seemed questionable. Grant is clearly a pretty pushy guy and him speaking to other cast members like crap seemed to be something they wanted to highlight for the purposes of drama. I didn't really like that angle. Then there is the whole issue of repetition. They talk to someone. Grant then tells you that he spoke to someone. Then another cast member then sums that up. This is not taking into account all the repeated information you get because of the advert breaks. You also get a sound track over the entire investigation which makes it seem like something is happening.

For me though I started to lose interest after watching their live investigation where a recorded voice growled "You're not supposed to be here!" twice. To anyone impartial that was clearly a recorded voice. Since then every show I've seen has had Brett saying "did you see that?" and of course, we didn't. Off he runs to investigate but alas, despite this happening nearly every episode he's not wearing a headcam or anything so every week golden evidence of the paranormal is lost. You'll just have to take his word for it I suppose.

I think this show started off quite well but turned to pure rubbish. I see it is now officially described as a docu-soap, sounds about right to me.

Ghost Hunters
copperpenny7 July 2006
I love this show!!!!! I want to see more of it and am disappointed that I can not find it in my TV line up right now. This show rocks! I like the fact that TAPS goes in and TRIES to debunk any ghost stories before saying that something might have a haunting. I am waiting for the day that they have a full body apparition instead of a shadow. Unlike other shows that ooh and ah over "orbs" and squeaks, this show has shown shadow people in motion. One show you would have sworn there was a ghost there, without a doubt. No one would have questioned it, caught on film. However, these guys are so honest, they found it to be the way their equipment was showing the banister. Kudos for your honesty!

Great if you like to keep Ghost Hunting real (mostly)
georgiamoxie14 July 2016
I enjoyed Ghost Hunters from the beginning because they don't create ghostly activity just to make a good show. If they saw nothing they say a location isn't haunted and they move on. By doing so I'm able to accept it when they do say a location is haunted.

I can't tolerate shows that drag in a ton of reenactment with staged actors, psychic mediums, and filler in order to keep the viewer entertained. I roll my eyes and change the channel.

If you're the type who wants to watch a Ghost Hunter show because you're skeptical if it's real, this is a good show. If you don't care and just want to see some maybe real life haunted footage then this isn't the show for you because you won't see it in every episode.

Go back to Roto-Rooter!
humphreys-828-11692629 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I think this show succeeds for the same reason that the great religions do: if it was more convincing people would be suspicious.

It is either brilliantly thought out and executed to be so appalling boring and unconvincing or its just a happy accident. The fact that its totally absurd strangely attracts people to choose to believe in it.

Its amazing that these clowns are being paid to make television when they are so absurdly bad at it. The entertainment value is even worse than the 'evidence'. If you're going to fake ghost footage at least make it interesting. When you have to subtitle the audio it means that its really not saying anything, its just random noise.
