Menacing mimes. Male strippers. Cee Lo Green in a slinky red jumpsuit with deep-plunging, lace-up neckline and a delicate ladywig. Carson Daly turning superlatives into bowls of lukewarm mush. And enough bum notes to recreate an authentic Ashlee Simpson recording-studio session. Those were just a few of the disconcerting distractions on the menu for the first live-performance round of The Voice‘s second season.
Maybe my expectations were too high going in. And to that end, maybe it’s not fair to make any long-lasting judgments about the season when there are a whopping 24 singers still alive and well and...

Reality singing competitions live or die by the strength of their contestants, but it doesn’t hurt to have other secret weapons — especially when you’ve got a two-hour telecast to fill. This week’s installment of The Voice certainly proved the value of a loaded arsenal — employing a fluffy white cat, some creative editing, subtle/possibly nonexistent nods to American Idol‘s Haley Reinhart, several hilariously unrehearsed outbursts, a wrestling match pitting Christina Aguilera’s breasts against the exhausted black Lycra of her scoop-neck top (spoiler alert: the blouse is so going to lose), and even a crushing blow to gossip monster Perez Hilton.

If you watched "The Voice" tonight, you may have recognized rocker Jordis Unga from another music competition show, "Rock Star: Inxs," in which the band sought their new lead singer. Unga. The 29-year-old singer appeared on the show in 2005. Like "The Voice," it was produced by Mark Burnett productions.
Unga sang "Maybe I'm Amazed," and during her song, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and Cee-Lo turned their chairs around. While her dad danced backstage, Unga burst into tears at the end of her song, her hands shaking as she introduced herself to the judges.
Then, the judges introduced themselves to her. "I am the a-hole who didn't pick you," Adam Levine admitted.
Aguilera says, "I loved what I heard. It's definitely stiffer competition this year... I heard that soulful little ad-lib in the low end and I love, love, loved it." She also noted that she's got more time and attention to offer her contestants,...

Three years since their last effort, Bloc Party is back in the studio working on a new album. But their frontman, Kele Okereke, couldn't tell you how it's coming. He's too busy wondering whether he's been fired.
Okereke told NME he hopes he "hasn't been fired" after catching his band together without him in New York:
I was actually having lunch about three weeks ago, just here on 8th Avenue and I saw somebody walk past and I recognised the haircut. It was Russell. I was like, 'Hey!' but he didn't see me and I followed him around the corner and then I saw Matt, Gordon and Russell all standing outside this rehearsal space. They all went inside.
Perhaps the band hasn't gotten over Okereke leaving them to pursue his solo career. He released his first album, Boxer, under the name Kele in June of 2010, to generally positive reviews.

If network television is to survive, it has to embrace the power of the Internet and redefine its traditional meaning of primetime, producer Mark Burnett said Wednesday. His comments came during an industry forum luncheon at the Museum of Television & Radio in Beverly Hills where the producer of such reality series as Survivor, The Apprentice and Rock Star: INXS lauded the creative and financial opportunities to be found throughout the online world. "The beautiful thing about the Internet is it's on-demand and naturally archived and has people forging communities," Burnett said. Adding that broadband in the office has made 9-to-5 the new television primetime, he continued, "I don't think anyone is bold enough to just do TV or the Internet ... but the Internet is clearly surpassing any network, and the future has to be the combination of the two."...

CBS' summer reality series Big Brother 6 and Rock Star: INXS showed some life on Tuesday as they move closer to their finales later this month. The 9 p.m. edition of Big Brother was the most-watched show of the night, even as CBS and NBC opened the night with newsmagazine coverage of the ongoing crisis in the Gulf Coast region wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Big Brother drew 8.1 million viewers and 3.4 rating/9 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. Rock Star followed at 10 p.m. with an average of 6 million viewers and 3.1/8 in the demo.
NEW YORK -- Fox waltzed to a primetime win Wednesday with another episode of So You Think You Can Dance, according to preliminary data released Thursday morning by Nielsen Media Research. So You Think You Can Dance and its preshow averaged 7.9 million viewers and a 3.1 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. It peaked with 8.7 million viewers between 9:30 and 10 p.m. as well as a 3.4/9 in the demographic, the highest of the night. It far outpaced the night's other original shows, all reality: ABC's Brat Camp (6.3 million, 2.2/6) between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.; CBS's Rock Star: INXS (6 million, 2.7/7) between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.; and R U The Girl on UPN (2.8 million, 1.3/4) between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The night's most-watched show in total viewers was Law & Order on NBC (9.2 million, 2.7/8), which outpaced repeats of CSI: NY (7.1 million, 2.5/7) and ABC's Lost (4.2 million, 1.6/4).

NEW YORK -- CBS won a repeat-laden Tuesday primetime with a one-two punch of NCIS and Big Brother, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research. CBS averaged 7.8 million viewers and a 2.9 rating/8 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, thanks to an 8 p.m. repeat of NCIS (9.2 million, 2.3/7) and a 9 p.m. original episode of Big Brother (8 million, 3.3/9). At 10 p.m. Rock Star: INXS (6.3 million, 3.0/8) won the demo over both NBC's Law & Order: SVU (8.7 million, 2.7/7) and ABC's Boston Legal (5 million, 1.6/4). Fox came in second place (6.8 million, 2.4/7) with a double shot of House repeats while NBC (6 million, 2.3/6) and ABC (5.3 million, 1.8/5) trailed.

Fox trotted to the nightly win as the competition began in earnest on So You Think You Can Dance. The dance contest series brought in an average of 8.5 million viewers and 3.4 rating/10 share in the adults 18-49 demographic from 8:30-10 p.m. against mostly repeat competition. The half-hour Dance preshow (5.9 million, 2.4/9) that ran at 8 p.m. also won its time slot. NBC was in basic cable territory with its 8-10 p.m. block of repeats of comedy The Office, which hovered around the 3.5 million viewer mark; the 10 p.m. repeat of Law & Order (6.8 million, 2.2/6) turned the lights on for the peacock. CBS also came alive at 10 p.m. with a repeat of CSI: NY (7.8 million, 2.6/7) leading out of a block of sitcom repeats and 9 p.m.'s Rock Star: INXS (5.6 million, 2.3/7). ABC's only real sign of life came at 9 p.m. with a fresh installment of Brat Camp (7.1 million, 2.4/7). Fox easily took the nightly bragging rights in total viewers (7.8 million) and adults 18-49 (3.2/10). CBS was its closest competitor in both measures (6.3 million, 2.2/7).

NEW YORK -- CBS continued its winning ways in Tuesday's primetime, with first-run Big Brother 6 topping a slew of reality series in the adults 18-49 demographic and a repeat of NCIS beating everything in total viewers. CBS's Rock Star continues to hit less than high notes for the network, with its Monday night airing sandwiched in between two repeats failing to do much for ratings. The efforts of INXS to find a new lead singer averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/7 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary data released Tuesday morning by Nielsen Media Research. Its demo ratings were flat compared to a week ago although it was up slightly from the 5.5 million viewers it delivered a week ago. That was despite the winning effort by repeats of Two and a Half Men (3.2/9, 9.6 million) and CSI: Miami (10 million, 3.4/9), which gave CBS the win in both total viewers and the demographic for Monday's primetime.

CBS won Tuesday primetime in both total viewers and adults 18-49 during a night that had a brief 11-minute interruption for the president's announcement of his Supreme Court nominee. The highest viewership went to a repeat (NCIS on CBS) but the highest-rated show of the night in the demo went to Big Brother, which started later due to the president's address. It averaged 8.3 million viewers and a 3.3 rating/9 share in the demographic, according to preliminary ratings estimates from Nielsen Media Research. That was about even with what the show did last week and its average 3.8/10 last summer when it aired on Tuesdays last year. Big Brother did again help its CBS reality sibling, Rock Star: INXS (6 million, 3.0/8). Its 18-49 rating was on par with its premiere last week.

The cook-off reality show averaged 6.4 million total viewers and a 3.2 rating/8 share in the adults 18-49 demographic at 9 p.m. Monday, according to preliminary ratings estimates from Nielsen Media Research. That was enough to win the time period in adults 18-49 and other demos, although a repeat of CBS's Two and a Half Men at 9 p.m. averaged 9.5 million viewers and a 3.3/9 in the demo. Brats and baseball players carried the Nielsen freight during a mostly moribund week in primetime for the seven-day frame ending July 17. ABC had some traction Wednesday with the two-hour debut of unscripted series Brat Camp, which was one of only a handful of programs to deliver more than 10 million viewers amid summer-light viewing levels last week. From 8-10 p.m., Brat Camp brought in 10.4 million campers and a 3.9 rating/12 share in the adults 18-49 demographic. It was slower going for CBS with the Monday debut of Rock Star: INXS (5.5 million, 2.4/7), which is slated to air Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Oct. 5. Rock Star, centering on a competition among aspiring rockers to become the new lead singer of 1980s hitmakers INXS, was topped in its debut by Fox's culinary reality series Hell's Kitchen (6.7 million, 3.2/9).

CBS' new summer series Rock Star: INXS saw its fortunes improve in its second outing on Tuesday but Fox appears to have easily taken the night with its live coverage of Major League Baseball's annual All-Star Game. The 10 p.m. airing of Rock Star brought in 6.3 million viewers and 3.1 rating/8 share in the adults 18-49 demographic. The show was topped in its time slot in viewers by NBC's repeat of Law & Order: SVU (8.8 million, 2.8/7), but more importantly for CBS, it improved on Monday's lackluster premiere numbers and did a respectable job of holding its 18-49 demo lead-in from 9 p.m.'s Big Brother 6 (8.5 million, 3.4/10). Reliable national estimates for Fox's live game coverage won't be available until later today, but preliminary estimates indicate a healthy, if not spectacular, turnout for baseball's annual mid-season showcase bout. NBC saw more modest returns for Average Joe (5.1 million, 2.2/7) and I Want to Be a Hilton (4.2 million, 1.9/5), as did ABC for its 10 p.m. summer drama Empire (4.7 million, 1.6/4). CBS placed second for the night behind Fox with an average of 8 million viewers and 2.9/9 in adults 18-49.

CBS' Rock Star: INXS didn't exactly debut to a stadium-sized audience Monday, which was a moribund night overall for the Big Four broadcast networks.
