Dad Kronkel orders Jonas to clean the castle for a florist who might buy it. He panics when he finds Charlotte has been condemned for her insolence by Don Carlos to 300 years in the Buta-bottle. Desperate to get her out, he begs but only obtains a reduction of her sentence to 1/3, still longer then his own life expectancy. He then decides to read through the ghost law book and discovers a page in invisible ink, which prescribes that ghost leader elections (every 286 years) are long overdue. Willem Woeste is the only eligible candidate, but once in power not only takes revenge on Don Carlos but turns out a far worse tyrant condemning all ghosts to 600 years. Jonas is far worse off.

Pa Kronkel finds baron du Dequem Chacooz interested in buying a portrait of his noble family in the haunted castle. He persuades him to buy the whole castle, planning to have it shipped for reassembly with his son in America, which would probably mean the end of all the spot-bound ghosts. Philomena is most outraged already, as the portrait is that of her beloved master, but don Carlos's painting skills inspire Jonas to devise a devious rescue plan.

Dad Kronkel loves renting the castle out as a film set to a famous director; he's even promised a small part, while the lead goes to the eternal star Jan Eclair. Don Carlos is furious, as he already considers the ghosts too noisy. The others worry about evacuating Secundo's inventions as the main scene is in the basement, where a knight lies buried who died in the Aarschot battle. Since that's Woeste's obsession, everyone expects him to be enthusiastic about the movie, but he's actually terrified after finding out the historically correct script stars not him but knight Diederik as hero.

Don Carlos's syndrome is found to be 'lijfwee' ('body woe'), which alas is contagious and can be fatal.
