Some people will do anything for money
talonjensen13 October 2018
So Carl Seabrook (Jeremy Slate) is a lazy womanizer who is willing to marry Edward Gibson's (Robert Webber) ex-wife Gloria (we never see her except for in her portrait) for $10,000. Edward is happy to pay him the $5,000 he has today plus $5,000 from the bank tomorrow just to be able to stop paying alimony. And, Edward will throw in an extra $500 so Carl and Gloria can have a "first class honeymoon".

SPOILER: Turns out Carl will have a ten times better honeymoon with the $5,000 Edward already gave him as Carl leaves the next day with Marian (Elaine Martone) for a honeymoon. And Gloria? Well, let's just say she won't be asking for any more alimony . . . ever.

"...everything always works out for the best."

Warning: Spoilers
I think a couple other reviewers for this episode might have missed the irony in the story. Carl Seabrook (Jeremy Slate) wasn't the great guy he considered himself to be when he offered to marry Edward Gibson's (Robert Webber) newly divorced, ex-wife. It would have saved Gibson a great deal of alimony down the road, but in thinking long term, he wound up short sighted. The twenty-five hundred dollar portrait of the ex-wife was nothing more than a bit of filler and diversion, and there was no reason to throw in the news of her death since it didn't really figure into what really happened with Carl and the money Ed paid him up front. I can see Carl at some point smooth talking his way out of marriage with his gal Marian, even before the honeymoon was over!

I really didn't get the point of this one.

I really don't get the point of "First Class Honeymoon". It has no twist, lots of irrelevant plot details and no humor...just a sleazebag stealing $5000. Am I missing something here?

When the show begins, Edward (Robert Webber) is thrilled that he's finally rid of his wife, as their divorce is now final. But he isn't thrilled about the large alimony settlement ($2000 a month...equal to about $17000 a month now) as well as the expensive painting she commissioned before the divorce. So, he's thrilled when Carl visits and claims he's willing to marry Gloria to rid Edward of the expense of alimony....if Edward pays him $5000 now and $5000 tomorrow.

There really isn't any sort of payoff. It felt as if the story was woefully underdeveloped and felt like something was missing.

Badly Scripted

So a guy cheats another guy out of Five Thousand Dollars. He doesn't fulfill the obligation but...I don't get the story. There is little suspense. I guess we're supposed to be happy that the newly divorced guy gets a bit of a comeuppance. Really unsatisfying as intrigue.
