Steed and Mrs Peel take part in a car race
Tweekums6 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In the opening scene we see an injured man driving for his life pursued by two other men; he briefly gives them the slip and breaks in to a nearby house. Here he places a small box in a red 'treasure chest' then takes an invitation to a motor race and posts it to Steed. He then drives to Steed's house but dies before he can give full details. Outside the two enemy agents listen in as Steed and Mrs Peel try to make sense of what the man said. When the invitation arrives Steed and Mrs Peel head to the house but are told they can't have access to the chest; it contains the prize money for the race; if they want it they will have to win. Steed tries to explain the importance but Sir George Benstead, the man organising the event, is killed before he can tell Steed anything. The race takes the form of a treasure hunt and to make things more interesting driver's racing partners are selected at random. Steed is paired with Penny Blaine; a woman who has lost countless fiancées and Mrs Peel acts as navigator to a man who will cheat to win. Meanwhile the two enemy agents have managed to get into the race. To confuse matters it becomes apparent that they didn't kill Sir George; there is another dangerous person involved in the race and we don't know who it is.

This episode was a lot of fun; while it is ostensibly about retrieving the box before the bad guys get it… in reality this is all just a set up to give us an enjoyable car race/treasure hunt. Arthur Lowe makes a welcome if short appearance as Sir George and Valerie Van Ost is a lot of fun as Penny; just about everything that happened reminded her of one of her many fiancées who'd died in some dramatic manner. The race was fun with some amusing moments, classic cars and some lovely rural scenery. This all leads up to a very tense scene where the previously unknown killer has Mrs Peel in a racing simulator which will electrocute her is she goes off the track! While the identity of the killer isn't a total surprise there are a decent number of suspects to choose from; Both Steed and Mrs Peel's driving partners as well as Sir George's Butler who is driving around to ensure fair play. There are a couple of minor, and easy to overlook, plot holes; what happened to all the other competitors in the race and why did Sir George build a simulator that could deliver a fatal shock? Overall a lot of fun and to my mind a classic Avengers episode.

Racing to the finish line
kevinolzak24 March 2011
"Dead Man's Treasure" moves at a brisk pace, racing to the finish line, all for 1000 guineas. In Steed's case, the hidden treasure also contains a box of important documents that cost the life of fellow agent Bobby Danvers (Rio Fanning, "False Witness"). Crashing the party in pursuit of the same goal are villains Alex (Edwin Richfield, in his fifth appearance on the show) and Carl (Neil McCarthy, "Brought to Book" and "The Interrogators"), who engage in a little cheating along the route, directed from one location to another, before Mrs. Peel winds up in the same death trap that proved fatal for Sir George Benstead (Arthur Lowe), the sponsor of the auto rally. Ivor Dean ("The Removal Men" and "Super Secret Cypher Snatch") plays Bates, dedicated manservant to Sir George, but it's Valerie Van Ost, previously seen in the promo short "The Strange Case of the Missing Corpse," who steals the show as Penny Blaine, the perpetual 'bridesmaid, never a bride,' whose succession of fiancees all come to a sad end (prompting Steed to suggest they remain good friends!) More delightful repartee, with Steed distracted by Penny's shapely legs while taking a turn off the road- "it's a short skirt, I mean a short cut!" plus Emma's introduction to an enamored Sir George, who can't take his eyes off of her while Steed comments on the car- Steed: "what a beauty!" Sir George: "oh, I do agree!" Steed: "marvelous chassis!" Sir George: "well, I wouldn't be quite so bold as to say that but uh..." Steed: "her suspension's pretty complex too!" Sir George: "eh? oh that!" The final gag with Steed's razor is a glorious ending to another beloved episode.

Amusing fun race
searchanddestroy-121 March 2019
This is a unique episode where you have two levels of villains. One group in search of secret documents which a Steed 's friend has hidden in a treasure trunk, and another villain in search of the bullion itself. At least we guess so. And it is interesting to discover the beautiful British countryside. And also Steed befriends an adorable blonde whilst Emma has to have a male mate in this treasure hunt. But whatever happened to the other competitors; no one has seemed to wonder about them...

One of the best Avengers episodes!
ldsullivan-131867 September 2018
Love this episode, in my opinion one of the best, along with 'Murdersville'. It has everything you want from an Avengers episode, the little English villages, the action, the humour.. love it!

Really captivating episode of The Avengers
Celeste_197724 March 2021
I've watched this on Christmas last year with my family and it was a treat!!! I have not seen an episode of the avengers for years. This one was great, very captivating and catchy. I would recommend watching this one, it is of a rally car race that they take part of to recover a treasure. You can watch it and find out. There are other reviews here with a much better description than my own. So many beautiful classic cars to admire too! I love the Mercedes!

INGENIOUS AND FUN
asalerno1025 May 2022
This is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. A government agent who is being chased by two enemy agents hides some valuable documents inside the prize chest of a car rally. Steed and Emma enter the competition to find said reports. Everything is perfect in this adventure, the rally is extremely entertaining, Steed travels as a couple with a hilarious companion, the villains try to set traps along the way in the style of Pierre Nodoyuna in Wacky Races, the tracking of the tracks to find the treasure is creative and intelligent and the final scene with the villain using a racing car simulator as an element of torture where Emma is receiving electric shocks is magnificent. Another success is the great musical score that accompanies the march of the rally. Guaranteed fun.

Valerie Van Ost (Penny) isn't shy in this episode!

Warning: Spoilers
Although there are only a few reviews thus far for this title, I feel that it has been covered fairly well. I only wish to mention one additional juicy detail that is quite fitting for this particular episode. Valerie bares all in an upskirt shot when exiting the vehicle! Gotta' love The Avengers...

Steed and Emma enter a rally race.
tandlich17 December 2018
When a courier is murdered, Steed and Mrs. Peel wrangle an invitation to a rally car race in hopes of finding the missing dispatches. The clues are included in the race map and instructions causing several humourous moments between Steed, Emma, and their respective partners. Ivor Dean, who portrayed Inspector Claude Eustace Teel in many The Saint episodes, guest stars as the butler Bates. Valerie Van Ost steals every scene as the ditzy blonde whose numerous past fiancees had all met with tragic and comic ends.

Dead Man's Treasure
guswhovian18 September 2020
Steed and Mrs Peel enter a car rally to retrieve information from a murdered agent, but the other contestants may not stick to the rules.

More overtly comedic than other episode, Dead Man's Treasure is still immensely entertaining. Most of the actors don't give very serious performances, which fits the writing; perhaps the only actor to give a serious performance is Norman Bowler, and he gets annoying at times. The guest cast is great though: Valerie Van Ost as a girl with numerous ill-fated fiancés; Edwin Richfield and Neil McCarthy as the two villainous foreign agents; Arthur Lowe as the organizer of the car rally; and Ivor Dean as the butler. Good fun.

Possibly the very worst Mrs. Peel episode.
stfivpa16 April 2019
In one sentence, I felt like I was watching an episode of something as inane as 'Batman'. The story was uninteresting and predictable, the blonde sidekick was utterly annoying, and the music was awful; what's more, Steed and Mrs. Peel we're also bumbling, inept, and annoying in this episode. I hope the five remaining Mrs. Peel episodes aren't anywhere near as bad as this. Oh, the cars were good, but that was it.

To the finish line, fun episode.
Sleepin_Dragon29 August 2022
A during courier explains the whereabouts of a valuable property, it's whereabouts is inside a treasure chest, a chest associated with a driving prize.

Well that was certainly different, I'm not sure I've seen an episode quite like this one, it's high octane, it's energetic, it was a lot of fun.

I'd be lying if I said it was a favourite of mine, for me it lacked an edge, an edge that has certainly been in the last few episodes. As you'll see though, some very experienced, and very capable reviewers loved it, and I understand why.

Like no other episode, it's very imaginative and well realised, I thought the ending was great, a scenario that was pretty much ahead of its time.

Valerie Van Ost was great fun as Penny I thought, such an original character, and so of the team.

Good fun, 7/10.
