Very good moral tale, mostly well realised. A strong but sad farewell for Steven.

Review of all 4 episodes:

This very strong 4 part story is set on an apparently idyllic world where all is not as it seems.

The adventure brings the TARDIS crew into a moral stand against a system which exploits one group for the furtherment of the other. It is not the first or last time such issues arise in the long running series but the ideas are well enough written and presented here to make this a very successful and entertaining story overall.

It is not necessarily 100 percent perfect but the story is interesting and well scripted by Ian Stuart Black. There is action, intelligent themes, good dialogue and some fine acting. The leader of the Elders, Jano (Frederick Jaeger), is an especially good character. William Hartnell and Peter Purves deliver great performances as usual and the fact it is the last story for Peter Purves as Steven is very sad. He was one of the best companions in my opinion but at least he had a decent send-off.

I think this story perhaps is the first sign of producer Innes Lloyd and story editor Gerry Davis, who both took over their roles mid season, beginning to put their stamp on the show. They apparently wanted the show to be less whimsical and more 'gutsy' with more action and seriousness in the scientific themes. This ticks those boxes.

My Ratings: Episode 1 - 8/10, Episodes 2 to 4 - 8.5/10

Overall: 8.38/10

The Savages!

Warning: Spoilers
The TARDIS has arrived on a far-distant and seemingly idyllic world. Yet the Doctor, Steven and Dodo learn it hides a terrible secret: the apparently civilised Elders maintain their advanced society by draining and transferring to themselves the life-force of the defenceless Savages.

Outraged at this exploitation, the Doctor is seemingly helpless to prevent it when some of his own life-force is tapped by the Elders' leader. In the process, however, the leader, Jano, also acquires some of the Doctor's attitudes and conscience. Turning against his own people, he enlists the Savages to destroy the Elders' transference laboratory - a task with which the time travellers gladly assist.

Steven agrees to remain behind on the planet to become the leader of the newly united Elders and Savages.

Review of four parts -

The plot is very hard to follow, well unless you read the plot bunch of times until you understand the plot. like what I started doing right now. The Companion Departure was great, there's nothing to say about this episode, I don't know. "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined." But oh boy, I can't wait to watch The War Machines, perhaps Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., and especially The Tenth Planet... We're near the end...

Steven wasn't a memorable companion for me, it's hard to explain why, he just didn't get some of that "great companion vibe" even Dodo too. I'm absolutely fine with Ben and Polly, they're so memorable.

5/10...
