Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time, so it only makes sense that Spaceballs is equally awesome. A 25th Anniversary of the Mel Brooks sci-fi parody extravaganza has been released on Blu-ray. I remember seeing this movie when I was young, when I did not fully get all of the mature themes and jokes. Having watched it as an adult, I have a new found respect for the film.
Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Joan Rivers, Daphne Zuniga, and John Hurt star in this hilarious spoof. This cast is really solid, my personal favorites are Candy and Moranis. They have such a wonderful facial expressions and comedic timing. A Mel Brooks movie without Mel Brooks is just wrong. Thankfully he is in Spaceballs, but I think this is one of his worst roles from all of his films.

It has been years since I have felt the power or the schwartz and jumped to ludicrous speed in Spaceballs. MGM is releasing this Mel Brooks comedic spoof on Blu-ray to honor the films 25th anniversary. The disc includes a cool new featurette and tons more for audiences to enjoy.
Here is the official press release:
The farce is strong in the “uproarious salute to science fiction” (The Hollywood Reporter) when Spaceballs: 25Thanniversary Edition blasts off on Blu-ray August 7 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Comedy legend Mel Brooks leads an all-star cast of cutups including John Candy (Splash), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters) and Bill Pullman (Ruthless People).
When the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) attempts to steal all the air from planet Druidia, a determined Druish Princess (Daphne Zuniga), a clueless rogue (Pullman) and a half-man/
half-dog creature who's his own best friend (Candy) set out to stop him.

Chicago – “The Mel Brooks Collection” contains two undeniable masterpieces, four more films that I could watch repeatedly, two so-so entries, and one interesting dud. The range of material, the special features, and the collectible packaging make it a must-own for anyone who dares claim to be a hardcore comedy fan.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Comedy is subjective but there’s nearly universal agreement on the fact that “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein” are two of the funniest movies ever made. They simply never get old. They had been previously available on Blu-ray, but most of their partners in this new collection are debuting on the format.
The Mel Brooks Collection was released on Blu-Ray on December 15th, 2009.

Eight of the eleven films that Brooks directed are included, in chronological order: “The Twelve Chairs,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Silent Movie,” “High Anxiety,” “History of the World, Part I,...

Chicago – The Round-Up is back to provide our loyal readers with synopsis and feature details on a few titles that may have slipped on to DVD or Blu-Ray under your radar but might make the right purchase choice this holiday weekend.
It’s not that these title are any “lesser” than some of the biggies out there (one nearly made $100 million domestically and another is a Mel Brooks classic), but we can’t get around to a full-length review of everything that comes into the HollywoodChicago.com office and we want to keep you as informed as possible.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” and “Spaceballs” were released on June 16th, 2009.
“The Education of Charlie Banks,” “Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Season Two,” and “White Sox Memories” were released on June 30th, 2009.

If you ask someone what their favorite Sci-fi spoof movie is, chances are Spaceballs will be mentioned. It’s the as-of-yet unmatched parody of Star Wars (and Star Trek, etc.) that just can’t seem to be replaced. It’s not even Mel Brooks’s best work, but it has a stranglehold on the genre. Brooks has a comic sensibility that many filmmakers can only dream of: the timing is perfect, the casting is always top-notch and the scripts have that necessary balance of self-importance and ridiculous notion to keep the entire scramble of a genre in one piece. Unfortunately, Spaceballs seems to grow dimmer as opposed to brighter as time marches on – but that has a lot to do with Mel’s self-professed, basic principle of parody: you can’t parody what you don’t love. Alas, the world has fallen out of love with Star Wars and Spaceballs feels it.
