Warner Bros. Discovery is still looking at ways to keep NBA games on TNT, and attempting to match Amazon’s bid for a package of rights might be its last shot.
There hasn’t been much news to report on the NBA front of late. Sure, the Boston Celtics just finished off the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the 2024 NBA Finals, but now that the season is over, fans are on the edge of their seats to see what will happen with the league’s national broadcast rights this time next year. The NBA would like that issue to have been resolved months ago, but indecision and second-guessing by Warner Bros. Discovery has caused the process to drag out. The New York Times reported earlier this week that Wbd was “likely” to try and match Amazon’s bid for a package of games destined for its streaming service Prime Video,...

In one year’s time, basketball hall-of-famer and sports broadcasting legend Charles Barkley will retire from television and the women of San Antonio will be able to breathe easy — well, as easy as people of their size ever can.
With the NBA moving to close a massive, $76 billion broadcasting deal with ESPN, NBC and Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and TNT Sports will likely face the end of their time broadcasting NBA basketball at the end of their current deal with the league following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 NBA season. Basketball fans and industry members alike are now preparing for a basketball world without the most celebrated and culturally significant sports studio show in TV history, Inside the NBA, which has featured the insightful commentary and cutting comedy of the Round Mound of Rebound for 24 glorious years.

TNT may be on the verge of losing the NBA… and its most famous broadcaster.
Former NBA great Charles Barkley, who co-hosts TNT’s NBA coverage and Inside the NBA postgame show, says he’ll retire from broadcasting at the end of the 2024-25 NBA season. On the verge of a likely seismic change in the NBA broadcast carriage, one of the most recognizable faces of basketball TV coverage over the past two decades, Charles Barkley, is calling it a career.
The longtime TNT broadcaster and Hall of Famer made the announcement after Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday, revealing that he planned to retire after the 2024-25 NBA season.
The news comes amid rampant speculation that TNT parent Warner Bros. Discovery is about to lose NBA rights to NBC.
“There’s been a lot of noise around our network the last few months. I just want to say, I talked to all the other networks, but I ain’t going nowhere other than TNT. But I have made the decision myself, no matter what happens, next year is going to be my last year on television,” Barkley said. “I just want to say thank you to my NBA family.

Charles Barkley is blocking Warner Bros. Discovery’s drive to the net.
The basketball legend added a new wrinkle to Warner’s ongoing efforts to retain media rights to the NBA late Friday evening by announcing he would retire from his announcing duties on “Inside the NBA,” the influential TNT program he has co-hosted for years.
“I have made the decision myself,” Barkley said during televised remarks on NBA TV following Game 4 of the NBA Finals. “No matter what happens, next year is going to be my last year on television.”
Barkley said he would not move to another network, no matter how the NBA decides to parcel out a new package of rights it has largely negotiated with NBCUniversal, Disney and Amazon. Warner Bros. As intrigue continues to swirl about its future role as an NBA broadcaster, Warner Bros Discovery’s Turner Sports has secured U.S. rights to the French Open tennis tournament.
The annual late-spring major, whose 2024 edition will wrap this weekend in Paris, is slated to be carried by Wbd’s linear networks as well as its Max streaming flagship starting in 2025. The term of the rights deal is 10 years. A person familiar with the agreement confirmed the details to Deadline.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
NBCUniversal (NBC and Peacock) as well as the Tennis Channel currently air French Open matches in the U.S. Wbd’s Eurosport has carried it in many international territories for years.
Variety had the first report of the deal.
Tennis in the U.S. is mostly controlled by ESPN, with the other three Grand Slams airing on the Disney outlet.

For a company that doesn’t ‘have to have’ the NBA, Wbd is looking more and more desperate to retain its rights at any cost.
Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t letting the NBA go without a fight… or two… or three. The company’s prospects for acquiring a package of NBA regular season and playoff games equivalent to what it has now in the league’s next national broadcasting rights deal seems to grow smaller every day, but that doesn’t mean that CEO David Zaslav is ready to throw in the towel just yet. Puck News has new details on Wbd’s new focus, a fourth package of games that could be carved out that would allow it to keep the NBA on TNT past the 2024-25 season.
Key Details: Wbd’s prospective fourth package could be made up of games that were formerly local broadcasts converted into national games.

The rivalry between Disney and Warner Bros. represents one of the most long-lasting and dynamic business competitions in the entertainment industry. Their rivalry has been deeply rooted as it has existed since the 1920s, and it originated from both studios having humble beginnings to becoming powerhouses in terms of filmmaking and creating content to entertain its audience.

Warner Bros. Discovery has struck a deal with rival ESPN, according to two people familiar with the matter, that will have the former sub-licensing a small number of college football playoff games over a five-year period starting later this year. TNT will be the lead media network for broadcast of two first-round games this year and next, and then will add two quarterfinals starting in 2026.
The deal surfaces as Warner Bros. Discovery remains enmeshed in critical discussions with the NBA about renewing long-standing media rights. Warner and the NBA have been allied since 1989, with the relationship growing so strong that Warner has helped operate the NBA’s cable network and manage some of its digital properties.

Charles Barkley, one of the mainstays of the long-venerated studio show Inside the NBA — which won yet another Sports Emmy last night — says the current media rights situation “sucks right now” for Warner Bros. Discovery staffers.
About 200 jobs could be lost, Barkley said in an interview Wednesday on SiriusXM, if Wbd loses out to NBCUniversal. (Listen to a clip below.)
“It just sucks right now for the people I work with,” Barkley said. “I’m worried about all the people I work with. I just turned 61. I’ve got enough money.”

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

There is a chance TNT's Inside the NBA will be cancelled after the NBA Playoffs.
Inside the NBA is a post-game show for NBA on TNT broadcasts, hosted by Ernie Johnson since 1990, with analysts (and former players) Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O'Neal.
Smith joined Johnson full-time in 1998, while Barkley, notorious for his bold statements, joined the show in 2000. The now beloved quartet rounded out when Shaq came on board in 2011, introducing the famous 'Shaqtin' a Fool' segment.

For basketball fans already mourning the potential loss of TNT’s Inside the NBA, there may be some small consolation: NBC may bring back John Tesh’s iconic “Roundball Rock.”
NBCU is reportedly set to bid $2.5 a year for rights to NBA games going forward, according to the Wall Street Journal. If the offer is successful, the company would supplant media rival Warner Bros. Discovery, whose TBS and TNT cable networks began carrying NBA games in 1988. TNT has been the flagship Turner network associated with pro basketball, with its Inside the NBA the gold standard of sports studio shows, since 1989.
The NBA’s other two partners in its next contract are said to be Disney and Amazon’s Prime Video.
If NBC is successful in securing the third slot, it would likely mean the end of the Emmy-winning Inside the NBA, much to the chagrin of sports fans. But when one door closes,...

A new report offers details on what could happen to the joint venture sports streaming platform if Wbd’s NBA package moves to NBC.
No matter how confident Warner Bros. Discovery executives sound when discussing the issue, the company is in a tight spot with the NBA. The company finds itself in the unenviable position of having to pay more than twice the amount it now spends to buy a smaller package of NBA games than it currently has starting in 2025, or simply admitting defeat and walking away in the face of NBC’s $2.5 billion-per-season offer for the package. But Wbd’s decision on this question doesn’t just affect its own business, it also has important implications for Venu Sports, the joint venture streaming service Wbd is at work on with Disney and Fox.
Key Details: Losing Wbd’s NBA package would be a blow to the value of Venu Sports,...

A new report indicates sources in the sports and media world are increasingly convinced the NBA is about to depart TNT.
So will there be a new version of “Roundball Rock,” or will NBC just dust off the John Tesh original starting in 2025? That decision could be on the minds of Comcast executives these days, as they attempt to win a package of NBA rights in the basketball league’s next national broadcasting deal. The company has lodged a $2.5 billion per year bid for a bundle that would include regular season and playoff games, but it has to worry about a challenge from Warner Bros. Discovery, which has been broadcasting NBA games for nearly 35 years. A new report from the Sports Business Journal reveals that NBC is currently in the lead NBA’s third parcel of games, and details how messy the fight between the two contenders just might get.

Puck News has the latest details on how the NBA’s next broadcast deal is shaping up, including more information on Amazon’s game inventory.
The NBA’s negotiating teams are still hard at work, ensuring the league’s next broadcasting deal at least doubles the revenue from its previous deal with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery. No agreements are finalized yet, but as things are shaping up, it appears that ESPN and Prime Video have all but completed their haggling with the Association and are close to inking their respective deals. A third package of NBA rights is still very much up for grabs, however, and a new report from Puck News shares information about what ESPN and Prime Video’s rights packages will look like, as well as the latest on negotiations between the league, NBC and Wbd for the last unclaimed share of games.

The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

New details on NBC’s desire to pull the NBA away from TNT have emerged, and if it succeeds it could be a disaster for Wbd.
NBC may be about to pick Warner Bros. Discovery’s pocket. It is not a secret that the network has long wanted to get back into the basketball business. After losing the NBA’s broadcasting rights to ESPN in 2002, NBC has been eager to become a part of the league’s next broadcast deal, and now that NBCUniversal is putting its money where its mouth is. The Wall Street Journal reports that, even though two-thirds of the NBA’s broadcast package has already reportedly been secured by Disney and Amazon, NBC is still in talks with the league to acquire what had been Warner Bros. Discovery’s package of games. The move would require a massive cash expenditure from NBCU, but it appears executives...

Can college basketball turn TV’s fortunes around?
At a moment where linear TV is in something of a lull, with last year’s strikes still being felt and a continued weak advertising market, the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament might be just the thing the market needs.
As usual, this year’s games will be televised on CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV, and will stream online via Max (for the TNT, TBS and TruTV games), Paramount+ (for the CBS games) and the March Madness Live app.
John Bogusz, the head of ad sales for CBS Sports (he will retire later this year), says that this year’s tournament is trending up high single digits in terms of dollars and pricing, as sports outpace entertainment in the marketplace. The entire tournament is “virtually sold out,” he says, with the Final Four and championship in particularly high demand (they are holding...

David Letterman was back on TV last night, and true to form, he brought his own desk piece.
During an appearance on TNT’s Inside the NBA thursday, Letterman presented a series of ideas for how the NBA could improve game play.
If you’re thinking that sounds a lot like the set up for a certain signature bit from Letterman’s two late night shows, you’re not alone.
“Is this anything like the top ten list?” asked Kenny Smith.
“Why would you say that? Would it be bad if it was?” replied Letterman.
The veteran late-night host went on to list a number of, shall we say, out-of-the box ideas for how the game could be changed to make it more exciting, including the addition of new 5- and 10-point lines, and team mascots getting all foul shots in the fourth quarter.

Warner Bros. Discovery is making cable network TruTV a regular home for sports, adding a weeknight sports block and shifting established franchise Impractical Jokers to TBS this summer.
A mix of live sports, original sports programming and ancillary sports content will start appearing on TruTV next Monday, March 11, under the banner “TNT Sports on TruTV.” The block will start at 6 p.m. Et and run through late night.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, aka March Madness, gets under way the following week. Wbd, which shares in March Madness rights with Paramount, often makes use of TruTV as a home for early-round tournament games.
The push toward daily sports programming comes as Wbd, Fox and Disney have embarked on a joint sports-focused streaming venture. The Jv, scheduled to launch this fall, will bring 14 linear network feeds to subscribers via the internet. Apart from the NCAA tournament, TNT is...

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to bring one of its “zombie” cable networks back to life with a big jolt of sports.
The media company intends to create a new nightly sports block for TruTV, the reality-series cable network that has largely been left to show endless episodes of the popular prank show “Impractical Jokers” and the caught-on-camera serial “World’s Dumbest.” In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little. A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts.
The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new “alterna-casts” that target different audiences; a...

Watch out “Woj” and “Shams,” there’s a new NBA scoop machine: “CNN Sports.”
The biggest NBA move of the week broke on TNT’s Inside the NBA Tuesday night, with the studio team revealing that ESPN analyst Doc Rivers had agreed to become the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. Their source? “CNN Sports.”
“Ok, are we ready for breaking news?” Inside the NBA host Adam Lefkoe began. “We have news in from CNN…” “From CNN?!” analyst Jamal Crawford responded. “From CNN Sports,” Lefkoe continued, breaking the Rivers news on-air.
Bleacher Report, TNT Sports’ digital news brand, subsequently shared the news itself, also citing CNN Sports.
And not long after the news broke on TNT, CNN.com published a story (the byline was just “CNN Staff”) with more detail on the move. It wasn’t until Wednesday morning that ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (“Woj”) and The Athletic’s Shams Charania (“Shams”) confirmed the move.

Warner Bros. Discovery is embarking on a notable rebrand to one of its core divisions.
The company is rebranding its Wbd Sports division as TNT Sports, embracing the name of one of its biggest cable channels (and its home for the NBA), and unifying its global sports brands under one name (the company has already rebranded its U.K. and Latin America sports channels as TNT Sports).
The newly named TNT Sports has some of the biggest sports rights outside of ESPN, including the NBA, NHL and MLB, as well as the March Madness college basketball tournament. Already, the live games and studio shows use the channels they run on (e.g., NBA on TNT, NHL on TNT, MLB on TBS), so the rebranding is more of a business-to-business move, encompassing the full umbrella of sports brands.
Bleacher Report, Golf Digest and the owned-and-operated businesses will all function as part of the TNT Sports family.

The reign of King Charles — the CNN show, not the British monarch — began rather quietly Wednesday.
The weekly show, hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley, drew just 501,00 viewers for its debut, according to same-day Nielsen ratings (it adjusted up a little from 486,000 in fast nationals). It finished a distant third among the biggest cable news channels in total viewers and didn’t really moving the needle from CNN’s recent averages in the hour. In fact, it ranks as the smallest audience of any of CNN’s primetime debuts this year.
King Charles was one of the last big moves of the brief Chris Licht era at CNN. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network announced the show in late April — six weeks before Licht was let go following a profile in The Atlantic that was poorly received among network staffers. (Mark Thompson became CEO of CNN in October.)

Gayle King and Charles Barkley are teaming up to host a new CNN primetime limited series which will debut on Nov. 29 and air every Wednesday at 10 p.m. Et.
“King Charles,” will be a weekly one-hour talk show program where the co-hosts will engage with each other and their guests in conversations revolving around the most interesting stories of the week.
In a promo for the new show, King and Barkley are seen on set, talking to each other and their guests, which include CNN’s John King and Audie Cornish. “Two broadcast titans are coming to CNN,” the narrator says.
“This is our unfiltered take on the biggest stories of the day,” King says in the promo, while Barkley says “We’re tired of the B.S.!”

CNN has set Nov. 29 as the premiere date for King Charles, the primetime limited series hosted by Gayle King and Charles Barkley.
The show will air at 10 p.m. Et on Wednesdays, although the second week will be an hour earlier because of the GOP debate on Dec. 6.
In a promo, King called the show “our unfiltered take on the biggest stories of the day.”
The show’s genesis was during the tenure of Chris Licht, the former CNN boss who was ousted in June. Licht had sought to shore up the network’s primetime lineup with star personalities, even if that meant once-a-week primetime shows. MSNBC already has done that, with The Rachel Maddow Show now appearing only on Mondays after Maddow signed a new contract that pulled back on her regular appearances.

NBA fans have just a few short hours left to iron out their watch party because the season is about to begin! The 2023-24 NBA season tips off on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Et when the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers renew their rivalry from last year’s Western Conference Finals.
Since that game will air on TNT, it will also be available to stream on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform Max. In fact, all live sports appearing on TNT, including all NBA games, will be available on Max at no additional cost to subscribers until Feb. 29, 2024.
While that’s great for Max users, only a relative handful of NBA games will be shown on TNT throughout the course of the year. The majority of NBA contests will be played in-market only on regional sports networks (RSNs), so fans will need a live TV streaming service...

Apple TV devices are some of the most powerful streaming players on the market. They’re compatible with all of the top streaming apps, including on-demand services like Max and Peacock as well as live TV apps like Directv Stream and Fubo.
While that’s good news for NBA fans who are looking for the best device for watching NBA games this year, it doesn’t help Apple TV+ subscribers who want to watch the league with their subscription. No NBA games will be played on Apple TV+ in the 2023-24 season, despite the possibility that the platform could host a package of contests from that league in the future.
To watch the NBA without a cable subscription this year, the vast majority of fans will need a ABC TV streaming service that offers regional sports networks (RSNs) as well as nationally broadcast channels like ABC, ESPN and TNT.

Roundball fans, rejoice! At last, the 2023-24 NBA season is about to begin, as the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers are set to reignite their rivalry from last year’s Western Conference Finals on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Et, live from Ball Arena in Denver.
Each team is set to play a schedule of 80+ games this NBA season, meaning those contests will be spread across many different channels. Sling TV will get some of those networks, such as ESPN and TNT; however; the lack of regional sports networks (RSNs) on the service makes it a less-than-ideal choice for completists who want to stream all of their team’s games this year.
There are still choices for cord-cutting NBA fans who want to stream their team from start to finish this season, however. Check them out below to get a breakdown of which The Streamabe recommends most highly!

Max fans who don’t relish the idea of coughing up $9.99 per month more to access the Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Discovery aims to make all of the sporting events it has developed over the years for cable crowds available to streamers at the same time — so long as they are willing to pay extra for the privilege.
The media giant, which enjoys lucrative rights deals with the NBA, Major League Baseball, the NHL and the NCAA “March Madness” tournament, wants to use those properties to bring eyeballs to Max, its streaming service. And so, starting Oct. 5, the company will launch a new “Bleacher Report” add-on package to Max. David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, gave Greta Gerwig her flowers on Wednesday at Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology. Considering the box office for “Barbie,” a few dozen (pink) roses was probably the very least he could do.
“Greta Gerwig gets the most credit. She’s an extraordinary genius,” Zaslav said when asked by a Goldman Sachs analyst what lessons Warner Bros. took from what is now the no. 1 film of the year.
Zaslav added that Gerwig “worked very effectively” and “right down to the wire” with the Warner Bros. Pictures marketing team.
“Every division of this company got behind ‘Barbie,'” he said. “Every asset that we have was turned pink.”
Zaslav means that both literally and figuratively. He had Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Ernie Johnson talking “Barbie” on “Inside the NBA.” If you watched a futbol match in Sweden, the field turned pink during halftime.
