An introduction to The Larkins.

Ada Larkins is delighted to have her son Eddie home after his national service comes to an end, she's keen to throw a big bash, but husband Alf is worried about the expense.

GI husband Jeff, the latest addition to the family introduced us to the family, a family who are clearly instructed and directed by battleaxe matriarch figure, Ada.

It's an amusing first episode, it's not what I'd call rip roaring comedy, it's very much an ITV comedy of the time, but it's definitely a decent start, for one primary reason, Peggy Mount.

It's a getting to know you episode, we meet the family and neighbours, and we learn the dynamic, Peggy Mount and David Kosoff were good value, one or two of the others were maybe a bit raw.

A solid start, it would get funnier as it goes along.

Solid start, 6/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Might as well admit it. This was just a trip down memory lane for me. Although I was surprised to realise the series ran until 1964. I thought it must have finished about 1961.

Anyway, as soon as Jeff started his opening monologue, I recalled all of the characters and even some of the actors' names. Peggy Mount of course is unforgettable with her relentless way of speaking. Her role honed by seasons of stage work as the mother in Sailor Beware. David Kossoff was familiar from the dozens of Jewish characters he had played down the years. But here he is a a novel role as the henpecked husband.

The story is very dated, and may require internet research on some of the references. Son Eddie's demobilization from National Service in the army is an excuse for a party but, of course everything goes wrong. The funniest scene for me was when Alf and Ada were arguing and Eddie, having just arrived, keeps trying to say hello but is completely ignored. Strangely, the comedy, which I recall as being frenetic, now seems to move at a gentler pace. Much of the humour is obvious and a few of the jokes are now definitely not PC . E.g Jeff being tasked with preparing tomato sandwiches "I've slit more redskins than Davy Crockett!". Get used to it there's another 39 episodes to go!

Wide Open House

The first episode of the popular ITV sitcom The Larkins.

With an introduction from American son in law Jeff Rogers.

Alf and Ada are throwing a homecoming party for son Eddie. He is on leave from National Service.

Money no object for Ada as she wants everyone in the neighbourhood to drop by. Alf is worried about how much this will all cost.

What no one bank on are two military policemen dropping in at the party.

No wonder Eddie is looking worried. It is left to Jeff and Alf to hold them back while Eddie looks for a way to escape.

I had to make allowances that this comedy dates from 1958. It is all a bit too gentle and not too amusing. With Ada never shutting up. So Alf has a hard time telling her that the MPs are not Eddie's friends but here to arrest him.

The twist being that MPs were not here for Eddie. They were there to arrest Alf for desertion back in 1919. As I said not too amusing.
