Good deed has bad result

Warning: Spoilers
Steve and Audrey Talbot, both ex-cons are heading to an airport with the money from a robbery. But Steve, for some inexplicable reason, decides he wants to do one last robbery of a jewelry store. A robbery that goes very wrong when he kills the owner. He flees but the crummy used car he bought just that morning breaks down and a kind couple give him a lift. Not a good idea as when they hear a radio announcement giving the description of Talbot, he pulls a gun on them and then he and the wife hide in the travel trailer the couple is towing. The Highway Patrol is in hot pursuit and track Talbot to the airport. One of the great strengths of this series is that much of the series is filmed on location and not in studio settings. We get a lot of street scenes and shots of small town houses and businesses. One such scene showed the the store front for the Verdugo Escrow Company. Seeing that I immediately thought of Elena Verdugo, the actress best known for the Marcus Welby television show. The Verdugo family was evidently a family important since the days the Spanish were dominant in California.

One Last Job with Trailer

Warning: Spoilers
Review – Trailer Story Creditable story with ex-con team vs. innocents both pursued by the HP with a trailer attached to the victim's vehicle. There was even a used car salesman involved, a murder during a robbery, and the car breaking down after all these unfortunate events. The trailer is hauled by a couple offering a ride, a radio bulletin tipping the identity of the murderer along with his scar, kidnapping, and the proverbial shoot out at the close. The murderer got what he deserved from Chief Dan's service pistol and the innocent wife received a police return trip to her waiting husband. Well acted with the good and bad couples, the car salesman, the witness after the robbery, and the two officers helping Dan with the case. Worth watching for all the cast members performed well as the bad guys get theirs in the end. Summary could be as follows: used car bought, within hours it breaks down, immediately following a an armed robbery murder, a kidnapping, finally a fatal shootout with police after an attempted escape. About those fingerprints that were never in existence, oh well.

"Trailer Story" - NO trash here!
steveoriole4 June 2020
One of the better story lines in the series, with Broderick Crawford as Highway Patrol "top man""- Chief Dan Mathews. This episode is notable for clearly showing up-close damage on Crawford's nose from either a fall or an altercation, "fueled" by his known drinking problems at the time. Note: Almost all HP episodes were filmed early in the day since Crawford usually started his drinking by Noon (or earlier) and was increasingly difficult to work with as the filming day unfolded. Unusual for the Highway Patrol series in general was the use of actual California locations such as the "Women's Prison at Tehachapi" (before it moved to near Chino CA, re-named "Frontera", and later housing several female members of the infamous "Manson Family") and the "Clovis Airfield". As always in the series, a Highway Patrol roadblock is key to bringing the criminal to justice. Good fun!

Good Premise, Milder Result
dougdoepke11 October 2018
Solid entry but nothing special. Mathews and Patrol chase down killer and robber who's escaping in a trailer along with husband-wife hostages. Premise is an engaging one but actor Irwin low-keys killer Talbot such that suspense fails to intensify. And catch Talbot's Marilyn Monroe type wife, at a time (1956) when MM's allure was at a peak. It's also another good look at LA's highways and byways, but not its notorious freeways. Good thing, otherwise no one would get anywhere. In contrast, note how empty the two-lane highways are which makes filming easier, I guess. It's also another chance to catch Crawford charging forth so there's no doubt who's in charge. Anyway, it's rapid-fire action with no drag time, keeping viewers solidly entertained.

Crawford's Nose

What's up with Crawford's nose in this episode? I remember seeing another one where he had a huge cold sore on his lip.
