Dutch royalty attend opening, which kicked off with Boudewijn Koole’s new feature; Bero Beyer hails Rotterdam diversity.
The 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 27 - Feb 7) opened last night with an unlikely infusion of glamour in the shape of 44-year-old Queen Maxima.
The Queen, attending Iffr for the first time, was in the festival’s main venue, the Doelen, for the screening of opening film, Beyond Sleep. The film is directed Boudewijn Koole (Kauwboy) and based on Dutch novel Nooit meer slapen by W.F. Hermans.
“International Film Festival Rotterdam is about as old as I am,” new festival director Bero Beyer commented in his opening speech. “It has been here year after year, growing in size and impact…but we should not take either the festival nor the open environment for granted.
“All over the world, filmmakers we cherish and have welcomed here in the past are prohibited to show their work, restricted in their...

"Please sir, stay calm! Let me play my role while you play yours!" Take a look at this fun, short film about a crop circle tour guide getting into a spat with her tour guests. Cropped is directed by filmmaker Chris Thomas and is an amusing Homespun Yarns film about the "Crop Hops: Circles of Life" tour to go see real crop circles. It's a nicely made short on a very limited budget, focusing on the story and atmosphere more than anything. Yes, the VFX are a bit weak when they show up, but I like the music, and the overall feel of the short is impressive for something this small. Nice work. A good short to get you in a scary movie mood. Description from Vimeo: Cropped is about a group of UFO enthusiasts who clash with their cynical crop circle tour guide. When night falls the group have...

I was completely gob-smacked by this one, folks. From the title and description of this 1980 release, I was expecting a smarmy slasher film that used the holiday season for a cheap backdrop and even cheaper jokes. What I got instead was a very well-made character study reminiscent of Polanski's Repulsion. Although not as good as that classic, it stands proudly beside it as a fascinating picture of a slow descent into madness and murder. If anything, Harry Standling is a more sympathetic main character as we are shown in a brief prologue the genesis of both his fixation on Christmas and the reason for his awkwardness with people. At an impressionable age the young Harry crept downstairs on Christmas Eve to see Santa sexually gratifying his mother. That this Santa was actually his father didn't register and the traumatized boy never really got over the sight of...

As much as genres like Westerns and musicals, the social issue historical drama often arrives in theatre as part of a cycle, one strong box office performance spurring on other producers’ projects. Sometimes a cycle can be re-started thanks to real-world events. The civil rights movement prodded the studios into releasing films that addressed the headlines, films like In The Heat Of The Night and Guess Who’S Coming To Dinner (and of course, the rise of the “blaxplotation” low-budget flicks) in the late sixties. By the mid 1970′s, most of the studios rarely tackled race relations, until a few late 80′s films like Driving Miss Daisy and the incendiary Do The Right Thing. But that subject popped up again just a few years ago, perhaps in part in response to the 2008 presidential elections. Most of these new films took a look at race through the lens of still fairly recent history.

The full programme for the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival has been unveiled by Artistic Director Chris Fujiwara, and it promises a profound and edifying voyage through cinema.
Boasting 14 World Premieres, 5 International Premieres and 10 European Premieres, this year’s programme ranges from family friendly blockbusters (Monsters University and Jurassic Park 3D), right through to the more obscure, art-house documentaries (“10″ and Natan).
The Bling Ring, Frances Ha, Upstream Colour and What Maisie Knew are among the films likely to attract wider audiences, all of which are in contention for the Audience Award and have picked up glowing reviews from their time on the festival circuit.
Other strands include Directors’ Showcase, which presents classics of the future and includes The Deep, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks and When Night Falls; New Realities, the best in new documentary filmmaking, represented by The Turtle’s Rage, Consequence and Before You Know It; and Films on Film,...

When Dermot Mulroney last visited the Sundance Film Festival 13 years ago, he was co-starring in an Alan Rudolph film titled Trixie, opposite Emily Watson and Nick Nolte. “I think it was a little less commercial then,” says Mulroney, who returns to Park City, Utah, next week with a trio of films. One other thing that’s also changed since 2000: the “Park City at Midnight” showcase, which specializes in some truly bizarre, outside-the-box filmmaking. (Think last year’s Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie.) When night falls at Sundance, the cool-crazies come out, and Mulroney arrives this year with a potential doozy.

However, five years of Viff-going has equipped me with a knack for knowing how to approach the festival, how to navigate the programming—and,...

7:40 pm – Started today off with the film that took home the Golden Lion last week in Venice, Ki-duk Kim’s Pieta. Splitting opinions with it’s series of shocking reveals, the film is a poetic revenge drama. Regardless of my reservations of watching a 4.5 hour film at a festival, I saw Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s slow, melodramatic onion, Penance. The Asian triple bill of today was rounded out by When Night Falls by director Liang Ying. Finishing my last full day here with Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, which I’ve heard many good words about throughout the last week. One more day. [Jordan M. Smith]

Dear Fern,
Here we are indeed—or at least, here we are somewhere, as I've only crossed paths with you once so far amongst the overwhelming number of films—press screened and public—in Tiff's 2012 lineup.
I, too, played “catch-up” the first day, as the greatest resource of Tiff's glut of films (you say “banquet,” I say “glut”!) is the ability for the cinephile who does not get to travel so often, or so far, to see what's been made a big deal of overseas at some festival or another. For you, it was Cannes; for me, lucky enough to have been there and therefore never having to see the Haneke again, it is Berlin, Venice and Locarno.
Thus on my first day was a hard film to top: the new work by Chinese documentarian Wang Bing, whose last feature—and first fiction—The Ditch, I saw the last time I was in Tiff,...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.

By merging the former Visions into the Wavelengths section, Cameron Bailey has essentially made a new incontournable programme. Headed by Andréa Picard, the section which at a time was populated by medium to short run times now includes some of the bigger names in innovative feature film filmmaking who have no qualms about bending the medium. This year the sections includes long, medium and short length works from the likes of Ben Rivers, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Carlos Reygadas (pic of his controversial Post Tenebras Lux above), Wang Bing, Mati Diop (actress from Claire Denis and Antonio Campos films) and our very own writer Blake Williams who makes it two for two at Tiff with Many a Swan – he previously had Coorow-Latham Road programmed last year. Here’s the complete A to Z listing and well-worth reading descriptions.

Leviathan. You may have heard the title by now. By the time it screened to press, the film had already gained some momentous hype, and I’m pleased to report it does not disappoint. Often exhilarating, Véréna Peraval and Lucien Castaing-Taylor‘s creation is a unique viewing experience—loud, disorienting, frightening, exciting and visually awesome. The best film from the main competition, at the very least, Leviathan (above) offers the sort of sensory adventure that cinema can but rarely does offer. Using cheap GoPro digital cameras, the filmmakers show us images and perspectives we’ve never seen before. Apparently, Apichatpong Weerasethakul did not like the film for having been unable to sense the presence of the directors within the film, which is valid, but for me an interesting part of this often alien encounter. For many critics, this was the movie to root for on the night of the awards ceremony,...

The Other Side: We’re sent dozens of short films to check out each month, but The Other Side really stands out from the pack. This short horror film is directed by The Santoro Brothers and it is apparent that they are skilled directors who are also true fans of the genre. While Cannes’ Quinzaine struggles to reframe its identity, its former artistic director Olivier Père continues to impress in his new job at the Locarno Film Festival. On Wednesday, he and his programming team unveiled a lineup that is absolutely salivatory, a who’s who for high-minded cinephiles. Perhaps most impressive of all, he has managed to once again nudge the festival’s selection aesthetic even deeper into esoteric ‘experimental’ territory without seeming all that radical. More than any other festival, Locarno is the home for the edgy projects that are too sophisticated for Cannes, whose cold shoulder to avant-garde narrative filmmaking becomes more glaring with each passing year. Check out the complete line-up at the bottom of this page.

Oren Peli is best known for creating the successful Paranormal Activity franchise, but the director who resurrected the found footage movie is going in a different route with his latest produced movie the Chernobyl Diaries. Well not entirely. The movie follows a group of friends vacationing in Eastern Europe who find themselves in over the heads when they get stranded in a ghost town near the nuclear reactor incident site of Chernobyl. When night falls, the residents of what was thought to be an abandoned Chernobyl come out and terrorize the tourists.
Check out the latest trailer from Oren Peli’s Chernobyl Diaries.
Watch the trailer in HD at Apple.
To be honest, I like the found footage and standard style of shooting, it doesn’t diminish the horror in the movie. Of course watching the trailer on my macbook doesn’t have the same scare effect as watching it on the big screen.

Producer Lauren Versel dished the dirt on the new comedy about two women vampires in the big city, and it's being called a "chick flick."
We've been so excited about this movie since we first heard the news, and it not only reunites Clueless star Alicia Silverstone with director Amy Heckerling, but Sigourney Weaver has a part as mean vampire villain named Cisserus who "made" Silverstone's character, "Goody", a vampire. Her roomate, "Stacey" is played by Kristyn Ritter.
Why is it being called a "chick flick"? because it stars two chicks and is directed by a chick. However, I wish people would see a film, or even a trailer, before putting something in that generally derogatory category. Director Heckerling made Clueless, the 1990s teenage interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma, and it was a hit with boys And girls because it was fucking funny.
