The first time I watched this, I didn't understand it. The main crime was one we already saw in season 1 episode 1.
Then I realised that it is splicing together two things.
All of the hospital scenes, leading up to the mother's death, are "now" - except for the two or three scenes where she and kari talk about future plans and going away - they are flashbacks to "last year" when she was ill but the treatment was having an effect.
All of the scenes involving Lena and Katya's trial etc are also "now".
In relation to the police procedural, the scene where kari goes to the office and brings home the water cooler is 'now". Everything else is flashbacks to "last year", when kari was working with NBI in Helsinki.
There is some clever misdirection which throw you off the scent.
The main crime is disastrous. Kari knows who the criminal is and yells at his boss., but they don't have enough evidence. Another death follows.
Great and moving explanation of how kari was talkies into moving to Lapp eranta.
