As Fox Entertainment gears up for the fall season, the chief of its unscripted division is most excited about returning to production with scaled-back pandemic restrictions.
“I’m not gonna say Covid’s gone, because it’s definitely not gone, but things have become easier to film,” Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials, told Variety ahead of the network’s summer 2022 Television Critics Association press tour presentation. (Find Variety‘s interview with Fox’s scripted chief Michael Thorn here.)
“‘We have ‘The Masked Singer’ coming back,” which has been completely reinvented,” Wade said. The series, a singing competition between celebrities whose identities are concealed by elaborate costumes, debuted in 2019. Therefore, only its first two seasons got through production unaffected by Covid-19.
Season 8 will follow what Wade calls a “king or queen of the hill” format, where only one contestant will move on from each episode. After three singers...

Fox has given a series order to “Farmer Wants a Wife,” a dating series based on an unscripted format developed by Fremantle. The series will follow farmers across the nation looking for love with someone who will embrace their remote country lifestyle. They will be matched with single women who’ve given up on dating in big cities and are looking for a true connection with a farmer.
The news came ahead of the network’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s virtual summer 2022 press tour.
The original “Farmer Wants a Wife” debuted in 20018 on the U.K.’s ITV, though different versions have aired in 32 countries including Australia, France and even the U.S. for a short run on the CW in 2008.

Leading production conglomerate Fremantle announced a new structure in Australia that will bring the development and production of all its entertainment, reality, and game show formats under the control of unscripted producer, Eureka Productions. Eureka is led by co-CEOs Chris Culvenor and Paul Franklin.
Fremantle Australia’s interim CEO, Greg Woods will take on the firm’s CEO role permanently and lead the other side of Fremantle’s Australian business. This will focus on the development and production of drama, documentaries, and factual-skewing programs.
The new structure follows Fremantle’s increased shareholding in Eureka last year and will see the label take on production of all Fremantle’s entertainment catalogue, including “Australia’s Got Talent,” “Australian Idol” and “Farmer Wants a Wife.”
It also follows the exit of Fremantle Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor that was announced in December. Oliver-Taylor is set to join Netflix Anz as its head of physical production.

“Australia’s Got Talent,” with celebrity judges including Neil Patrick Harris and British singer Alesha Dixon, was halted after Sydney initiated a two-week lockdown in response to a new surge of coronavirus cases.
The Seven network and production company Fremantle Media made the decision as the lockdown meant the show would have no live studio audience.
“Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in Sydney, we have decided to postpone production of the new season of ‘AGT’ to a date to be determined. A studio audience is a vitally important part of this much-loved show, so we have made the responsible but tough call to not go ahead for now,” Seven said in a statement.
International hosts Harris and Dixon had recently finished their two weeks mandatory hotel quarantine in order to take part in the show alongside fellow Australian judges radio host Kate Ritchie and actor-comedian Shane Jacobson. They will...

The big money going into drama means scripted grabs all the headlines in TV these days, but under the radar there’s a surprising amount of innovation going on within unscripted entertainment, too.
At first glance, it seems like little has changed in that genre, as the list of top formats is familiar. Franchises such as “Dancing With the Stars,” “Survivor,” “American Idol” and “Got Talent” still draw in millions of live viewers around the world, despite each being well over a decade old. In the U.K., the latest installment of the country’s most-popular format, “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” was its most-watched ever — in its 18th season — and will debut in France later this year.
For many broadcasters, these tentpole shows remain reassuringly popular at a time when their business is being disrupted by the streamers. “The big brands are still attracting big audiences,...

In last week's episode of the CW's Farmer Wants a Wife, we saw a whole lot of pie, which were all made by the women to impress our farmer, Matt. In fact, Amanda was the star baker of the challenge, as Matt hailed hers the most delicious among the batch. Last week we also saw how Ashley placed Matt in an awkward spot more than once. He tried to get to know her a little more, but to no avail as they soon realized they haven't got much in common. Amidst the drama of the reality competition, Matt has revealed himself as the simple guy with dreams of finding the woman of his dreams. Last month, he spoke to the River Front Times to let us in on his thoughts about the show.
