Surprise! Killer Acting.
Her-Excellency18 May 2023
Shailene Woodley has never stood out, (to me), in any particularly noteworthy way as an actor. Actually, that sounds a lot harsher than intended. In more courteous terminology, she has always executed her roles well, but never enough in my estimation, to count as an actor who I would deliberately look forward to seeing in films - until now.

In "To Catch A Killer" she delivers such a strong and believable performance as a precarious beat officer, that she practically steals the spotlight. Here, I have to draw your attention to the word "practically", because in this film, Woodley is paired with Ben Mendelsohn who also delivers such a successfully rich, compelling and powerful depiction of an aging and enervated senior FBI detective, that it is difficult to tell who outdoes the other with and within the efficacy of their roles. To me, they kind of throw the torch (or baton) of excellence to one another, scene by scene.

As if the near-perfect delivery and chemistry of the leads was not enough, despite some of the token villainous characters and scenarios being a bit over-the-top, the acting by most everyone else was also above-average. This is especially true of Ralph Ineson, who was simply, low-key great.

My biggest and mostly only complaint upon first-viewing, was that a little over 3/4's of the way through, the film kind of changes direction a bit, which made the ending feel uneven and somewhat unfulfilling. In RETROSPECT, however, I think that the way it took somewhat of a shift might be the best thing they could have done with it. Had they gone in any other direction, it would be much too easy to chalk this up as a film which ended in a predictable or 'done before' manner.

As it is, To Catch a Killer ended the way it began: as a solid, stand-alone feature that was immersive, tense and thought-provoking through and through.

7.8/10.

Surprisingly better than I expected it to be.
Sleepin_Dragon20 June 2023
A marksman strikes on New Year's Eve, killing almost thirty people, on the case is FBI Agent Landmark, who gives a chance to intelligent, but troubled Police Officer Eleanor.

This is a Thriller with a bit of depth, and one that will definitely hold your interest, it doesn't exactly cover any new ground, or give us anything that hasn't been done before, but when I compare this to the batch of recent thrillers that I've seen recently, this one offers a bit more.

The final showdown was a particularly good scene, a good old fashioned scene of the good guy taking on the bad one, the age old hunt for a moral code.

Maybe the scenes inside the abattoir were a little unexpected and graphic, they'll be too much for some viewers.

I've seen Shailene Woodley in a few things, and for me this is the best of her, I thought she was excellent as. I thought Ralph Ineson was terrific.

It's not groundbreaking, but it's a decent watch.

7/10.

Solid throwback thriller
ykjdh27 April 2023
First of all, rotten tomatoes has reviewers comparing this to Silence of the Lambs. That's ho I heard about this one and got curious. This movie is a throwback to more of the mystery, thrillers we had in the 90s, but it's not Silence of the Lambs. The killer here is vicious and has a high body count. The pacing was pretty decent and I must say even more exciting than a lot of thrillers out today.

First, that opening sequence will grab your attention and the movie is bright enough to see that action on screen. Every performance works here and is played as a straight forward, solid thriller. I read where folks were split in how it ended. In my opinion, I thought the whole movie is solid and the ending was perfect. This is that rare thriller that I'd actually pay to see again.

Like a really brutal episode of CSI
FixedYourEnding30 August 2023
Misanthrope (To Catch a Killer) delivers a chilling and brutal chase after a shooter that manages to evade technology surveillance and large scale police forces. Our protagonist is a climb-from-the-bottom police officer with good motivation and talent. The chase after the killer will go through hard scenes, politics and personal confrontations going all the way to a conclusion which is in some ways predictable and in some ways not.

Overall, Misanthrope is a believable thriller that will keep you thinking and guessing all the way through. The characters are great and we are given just enough background on each to have us care without boring us with irrelevant details. Although there is plenty of action, the movie is not "a bullet a second" and there is plenty of drama and dialogues in between, which is a breath of fresh air compared to all the beautiful-CGI no-story films we see out of Hollywood.

I liked "Misanthrope". It is well made, well acted and well written. It will not win any Oscars, but I still recommend it to anybody who is into crime drama and police action movies. Exact score: 72 / 100.

I wasn't too sure at first, but ended up pleasantly surprised.
Top_Dawg_Critic18 May 2023
Just by watching the trailer, I was annoyed with Mendelsohn's character Lammark, and I questioned casting Woodley as a beat cop - I mean there are so many other more convincing female actors out there. But oddly enough, both actors and their characters grew on me as the film progressed.

I'm also not a fan of slow paced films, and this one mostly is, but oddly enough, Argentinian co-writer and director Damián Szifron (in his first English film debut) made it all work with engaging scenes and circumstances. His directing was spot-on, and although there was ambiguity to many scenes and dialogue, the film came together like an old school psycho-thriller/police procedural. It felt like a non-Hollywood-stylized movie version of a better Criminal Minds episode.

The story was nothing revolutionary, but delivered enough suspense at the right moments, built intriguing character interest, and had some riveting action just at the right times to keep me fully engaged throughout the entire almost two hour runtime. So considering the current slim pickings out there for down and out enjoyable thriller/cop films, this one is a winner, and a definite recommend from me.

Well made thriller with strong performances by the leads
godsnames23 July 2023
Good direction, good original story, good camerawork and a very good supportive score for the leads. Shailene Woodley is excellent in her role as a troubled law enforcement officer but boy, how fantastic Ben Mendelsohn is. I truly believe he is one of the best character actor of his generation, taking the lead here superbly without any fuss. They are both a joy to watch and their chemistry as investigator partners is profound. This movie may not shock you with its twists and turns like 'Seven', but it is definitely gives you a deep ride until the very end. Its character building is excellent. Just be patient and follow the flow.

Above the average movie-script
danielcereto13 June 2023
The movie itself is great. It could have been a masterpiece because it has all the ingredients. Amazing cast, interesting non generic script and great scenarios. On the other hand, the ending felt a bit rushed. But let's start with the great.

First, the cast does an amazing job here. Intense, real and deep characters.

Second, the script is quite interesting (not original) but it has a few surprises that in my case I didn't see to come.

Last, the settings are great. Love the cold vibes. Fargo's style.

So, overall if you love good independent cinema this one is for you. Could have been a true masterpiece with a more elaborated ending. But nothing is perfect. Enjoy.

Solid and Well Written
persister-7117426 April 2023
I haven't been rating movies, but I feel it is necessary for me to review this one. This is not a thrill-a-second kind of movie. It progresses intelligently and thoughtfully. It is a thinking movie. The acting and script are excellent. The two leads were perfect for this movie. They seemed to feed off of one another, trying to outdo each other as the best actor in the movie. So many movies fall flat at the end. But this one excelled. It actually has a good ending. I recommend this movie to anyone who is intelligent, and likes to think. Yes, it got a bit slow with some scenes that maybe could have been written a little better. That's why I'm only giving it an eight. But I don't know how anyone could walk away from this movie disappointed!

ben and shailene do their thing
ferguson-620 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. Argentinian writer-director Damian Szifron was behind the terrific WILD TALES (2014), which received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, and this time out, he and co-writer Jonathan Wakeham venture into psychological crime procedural territory. A captivating opening sequence, expert photography, and top notch acting from the two leads keeps us watching, although there seems to have been some confusion on the best path for the script. The end result is watchable, but not memorable.

It is New Year's Eve in Baltimore and celebrations, revelry, and parties are occurring all over the city. As beat cop Eleanor Falco (Shailene Woodley, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, 2014) negotiates a mundane rift between an irritated diner owner and a slow-eating customer, shots begin to ring out. This frantic sequence captures the panic as we witness a few of the 29 gun shots that find a target. Officer Falco races a couple of blocks to the high-rise building where an explosion occurs. It turns out the sniper destroyed his own lair in order to avoid leaving evidence.

Enter renowned FBI Agent Lammark (Ben Mendelsohn, ANIMAL KINGDOM, 2010) who takes charge of the investigation. This point is mentioned because the chain-of-command plays a vital role in the proceedings ... Lammark wants to run the investigation, but bureaucrats and politicians interfere. Lammark hones in on Falco and her instincts. Of course, she has a checkered past that includes having her FBI application denied. Here she acts as a liaison and provides insight into the killer. Get it? One damaged person can relate to another.

Some social commentary gets periodically interjected - gun control, power plays by law enforcement, misplaced priorities by politicians - but the fun part is watching Mendelsohn and Woodley flash their respective talent. She's kind of a flawed Clarice Starling and he's a guy that is committed to finding the bad guy. Filmed in Montreal, cinematographer Javier Julia maintains a cool atmosphere throughout, and Carter Burwell's music delivers some excellent piano parts. This ends up being one of those movies that's enough fun to watch if you don't think too hard while it's playing, and it also reminds us that Ben Mendelsohn and Shailene Woodley are fine actors who deliver in every role.

Opens in theaters on April 21, 2023.

A film of 2 halves. Start well but cringe and formulaic at the end
stevelivesey-3718321 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This starts with a great set up. A well prepared, motivated serial killer kills 29 and gets away with it in a fabulous opening.

The second act is all cat and mouse with a great set piece at a shopping mall.

After that it becomes terribly formulaic. White supremicists targeted and taken down by a strong female character with addiction issues, the obligatory black police officer and a female black officer who dues exs into the the scene.

After that it's the slippery slope of gay cop who is dying, killer who is not as well prepared or skilled as he has shown all movie, strong woman who takes him down and then inexplicably extorts the situation for her gain at the end.

All in all, a terrible disappointment.

Solid Thriller, it leaves you thinking.
javier_83 June 2023
So it's like most crime dramas, you know, there's a killer, false lead, false lead, then true lead, true lead until they catch him.

The first part was like that, like most crime movies. But I liked the second part, I'm not going to spoil anything, but the characters and their motivations felt real, felt like it could happen to anyone in this day and age. It left me thinking about a lot of stuff, it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, a bit sad about what happened and overall the killer's story, which is more sad than violent.

Overall I really enjoyed it, it's a slow burner but it pays off. I recommend it.

Better then what I expected!
djrmc2430 December 2023
To Catch A Killer was much better then I expected. I was thinking this was going to be a straight to dvd type of film and it was far from it. Our two main leads are investigating a string of mass shootings to identify the suspect and bring him to justice. Right from the get go in this film it reels you right in and does not let up. The big downside to this film is that the acting is very stiff in most areas when it should not be. I really thought the casting was solid here but the script could have been tighter with less dialogue perhaps. The action is very realistic in this movie and can be disturbing to watch for some. Overall I had a good time with this film but probably wouldn't be rewatching it anytime soon. To Catch a Killer gets 6 stars out of 10 from me.

Horrifically cheesy
parasolspetticoats16 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The entire film comes across like a fan of James Patterson and Law & Order: SVU watched a John Douglas interview and thought, "I can write a screenplay about profiling!" But not just any cat and mouse, "on the trail of a serial killer" story! No, this one will have dialogue with the confidence and uncomfortable mellow-drama of a slam poetry reading.

I can suspend disbelief with films. If it's engaging and feels earnest, I can enjoy it, even if it strays outside of "realistic." This movie and its primary characters, are absurd. Apparently the FBI is filled with hapless, knee jerk egomaniacs that don't think before they act or bother to thoroughly investigate a suspect. Oh, of course, except the philosophical lone wolf agent who could easily crack the case on his own, but for goodwill and a lark, enlists the help of a suicidal, mentally ill beat cop who was denied entry to the bureau years ago despite her uncanny, stellar insights into the mind of killers. She has an eye for them because she, too, is tortured!!! Big ol' booooo!!! I wonder how many FBI agents wax philosophic while sipping coffee and then subvert the cliched movie trope of telling the local authorities to "stand down", by doing open mic night/motivational speaking in a quiet room of eighty cops. I can see the writer fist pumping and cracking his knuckles after that one.

Everything about it smells like contemporary studio films with a checklist of disingenuous, forced archetypes (both "good guys" and "bad guys") and producer notes. Like, can we get some high fives for *insert gender, race, sexual orientation, possible mental afflictions, political affiliation, etc*?

Also, I get tax incentives, and movies are very expensive, but Baltimore by way of Canada, including Montreal accents? I gotta have at least one character that sounds like they're in a John Waters movie.

And the runtime. Come on. Wrap this up in 1:40:00 and then shave off another ten.

Much better than I expected.
AfricanBro12 February 2024
It's a pretty good thriller, hesitate to call it great. The story wasn't groundbreaking but it was interesting and paced very well, so I wasn't bored at any point. Acting is great and dialogue is okay. I never watched this because I didn't have high expectations for it, I had recently watched Robots with Shailene Woodley around the time this came out so I thought they'd be of similar caliber. So this was a good surprise. It has glimpses of what could've been a great movie. Woodley was great, Ben Mendelsohn too, but I was most impressed by how naturally Ralph Ineson fit into his role. The ending was a bit of a twist. I don't think this is a masterpiece, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at how engaged I was due to my low expectations for it.

If you're tired of superhero movies
weecurate21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
You want a good popcorn night see a straight-forward cop movie with good actors and great cinematography. This is the film for you. I don't see Silence of the lambs when I see this film, but more a throwback to other 90's like Hillstreet Blues. Just a solid film with no VFX and superman capes. The script is a little thin but I was glued to my seat and there is quite a lot of suspence and excitement so kudos to the director and the pacing and music. I could have appreciated a different ending but looking back on it now... To Catch a Killer had to end this way. This is sign that movies of this kind, are back in the theaters! And i think this is a film to encourage if solely for that reason. Enjoy your porcorn.

Hoped such high hopes
I'm a huge fan of thrillers. Silence of the Lambs, and Se7ven are among my favorite movies of all time so I had high hopes after having watched the trailer.

So why the low rating. Cinematography is great (lighting, color grading, audio, etc.), Shailene Woodley as the lead does a good job but overall the story is just too thin and the majority of the cast is not delivering.

Would have loved to see a deeper story where you really felt attached to the detectives - just like Mills/Sommerset or Starling in the aforementioned movies. And also the killer here is underwhelming - not played well and his raison d'etre is just not good enough.

So hoping for this genre to grow but unfortunately this movie does not deliver and will not be one to remember.

A nice action crime movie
mvahidalizadeh18 May 2023
The story starts with a firework on New Year's Eve. This is the story of a girl who starts helping a detective catch a killer. The story is well-written. You can't predict what happens next. The acting crew is well-selected. Shailene Woodley, Ben Mendelsohn, and Ralph Inexon were awesome in the movie. You will see many different locations in the movie. I liked the movements of the camera and the angles. Also, you see a lot of nice heli-shots over the city. There are many action scenes in the movie. I liked the background music and sound effects. The ending was nice. I recommend this movie to action and crime fans.

Disappointingly hum-drum mediocre cop / psycho thriller, despite its two fine stars
danieljfarthing24 May 2023
With its two fine stars and gripping opening scenes "To Catch A Killer" shoulda / coulda been a top-class cop / psycho thriller, but co-writer (with Jonathan Wakeham) / director Damián Szifron plods, stumbles & loses his way - to deliver something way more ordinary. When an ace sniper kills 20+ folk one Baltimore NYE, under fire senior FBI agent Ben Mendelsohn and keen, astute (but troubled) beat cop Shailene Woodley team up to figure him out & hunt him down - though bureaucratic nincompoops, elusive witnesses and false leads slow them up. Support from the likes of Ralph Ineson & Jovan Adepo couldn't save this one from its own hum-drum mediocrity.

Really great movie
kimmedim20 July 2023
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It depicted events vividly, and it had good attention to details, like radio listeners calling in to say dumb stuff to get fame in the wake of an event, corrupt morals, and how you can struggle with mental illness and be on the total opposite polar if each other because of it. I loved the ending also for this very reason.

The actors in this move did a good job also, and the music made it a very exciting watch. It threw me a bit back to the 90s detective moves at times, and that was a refreshing change.. The movie also had a very strong sense of foreboding atmosphere throughout.

Fails due a juggling to much and a tepid mystery
Ansango22 May 2023
TO CATCH A KILLER starts promisingly with an intriguing setup. Along with the central mystery, its social commentary on American consumerism, democracy, the sad state of law enforcement, and the 2nd Amendment, are all good but after a while starts to feel overwhelming. Had the mystery been intriguing, I wouldn't have minded all that but that isn't enticing enough. The plot has a great buildup but it lacks severely in payoff because the focus was less on the identity of the killer than the critique of society. Even in the department of social remarks, it bites way more than it can chew. The performances are good overall but the character of Shailene Woodley was unnecessarily hyped. She could have been a normal girl rather than someone who is suffering from suicidal thoughts and trauma, and the film would have been the same. Her character trait has very little bearing on the plot, but it was mentioned so many times that you start to wonder whether it's done with good intentions or it's just trauma porn.

Overall, it doesn't hit as hard as it should have because of the mishmash of too much. Although the stylish direction and good performances make sure that the ride doesn't get too rough. The issues it touches upon are relevant and urgent, and strictly on its political commentary basis, it bites hard(would have been harder if it didn't focus on so much things at once).

Don't waste your time watching this
poppedcultureblog22 May 2023
1. The only thing worse than the script, was the acting.

2. She's usually a safe bet for a solid performance, but even that talent couldn't pull this one out of the toilet.

3. Zero character development so every line is delivered as that, a line. Nothing to substantiate the delivery.

4. So many cliches in the narrative and script, I was the permanent face-palm emoji for the duration.

5. Woodley produced this disaster too. Wonder if she watched it before release? Doubt it or this catastrophe wouldn't have seen the light of day.

6. It's a desperate attempt to construct a narrative from bits and pieces of some of the better investigative thrillers.

7. Any rating for this film above 4, is agency or paid.

8. Cringe fest of note.

Taught thriller that keeps you hooked in from the start
zack_gideon16 May 2023
I'm impressed honestly. This was a rare 2 hour film that gets you hooked from the first scene until the last. The acting is very good, especially Shailene Woodley. Her character is very complex and she absolutely nailed it. Ben is also good as he always is.

The plot is very engaging, juxtaposing police, FBI, mass killings and they thread in themes of addiction and trauma as the story moves along.

Also enjoyable is all the cinematography and direction. They leverage a lot of long shots, aerials, outdoor locations and interiors with a nice balance that also helps the viewer absorb the story and acting.

This is one of my favorite films in the last few years and I can't wait to rewatch it! 8/10.

Don't understand the boredom - this was descent!
akurschybee24 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hollyweird has been in a major slump for A LONG TIME now and EVERYTHING stinks. I actually enjoyed this. Granted, it's a well used plot that has a relatively predictable ending. However, it threw a new motive out in the world. The 'bad guy' doesn't have typical beef with society (if you watch the movie no then read this you'll say ha ha - bad pun), he's not looking for money. I think many have been turned off by this movie due to the pace and the formulaic plot but it has some serious imagery and makes you believe that THIS SCENARIO could actually happen (unlike many other films that are so over the top). In a post covid, post George Floyd world, it even manages to throw a nod here and there how the last 3+ years has affected us as a society.

It's not the greatest film in the world but IMO - it's worth a watch. Maybe you'll disagree. I thought it added a bit of 'something different'.

Good ideas and direction hindered by lousy script and wokeness
kuner-5902918 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This starts off strong. On new years eve, during the fireworks, someone snipes random people celebrating from a highrise. As the police piece trace the bullet trajectories, suddenly several laserpointers at once point at one apartment, and the terror and extent of the crime becomes apparent. The apartment then blows up, leaving no evidence.

An eerie (but overused and never expanded) score sets in, setting the mood for the overwhelming mystery of how to catch this killer.

For the first few minutes, the investigation is interesting. The film nails the police procedural. Where is lacks, unfortunately, is the main character. For some inexplicable reason (aka bad writing) a female beat cop is invited to act as the FBI chief investigator's de facto partner. He says it's because she is intelligent and honest. This and other lines are supposed to establish our protagonist as capable, but it walks right into the same Mary Sue trap like the recent Star Wars films, where everyone constantly tells the audience how great Rey is.

Don't tell us, show us.

Having a super capable protagonist is boring. As an audience, you connect with a protagonist through their struggles. To be fair, they give her a backstory of depression and a few failings, but for most of the movie she's just there, saying the smartest lines in the room and whatever is necessary to get the plot moving. The best moments are the few ones where she isn't in control of the situation. When she goes behind her boss's back at one point and gets reprimanded, in the morgue and when the killer strikes again, and towards the very end. Having her feel helpless before a monumental task increases the stakes and suspense.

Suspense is where this film falls flat, unfortunately. Classics like Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs etc all had scenes of the killer preparing and executing their crimes. In Manhunter, these scenes were just as interesting as the police procedural parts, and it created a great rhythm and sense of urgency. Here, the killer isn't seen except in one short scene.

I mentioned woke in my headline. Is the film very woke? Yes and no. There is one ham fisted scene regarding gay marriage. They set it up well enough, with the protagonist accusing the FBI guy of wanting to have sex with her. He says he's married, she asks since when, he says "since we were allowed to". Clever line, would have sufficed. But no, they need to tack on a whole scene at home with the husband that adds nothing and merely interrupts the narrative thrust, throwing in a character we never see again speculating on the killer's motive in a way that doesn't pay off. Every line he says is presented as some profound criticism of America's global politics and society. It has nothing to do with the story. It's a shoed in woke diatribe. Misusing art for politics is called propaganda. I don't like propaganda in my entertainment. Add to that the aforementioned mary sue problem with the protagonist, and you have the usual woke tropes of modern day screenwriting. It's a shame, because the film would have been better without it.

There is another scene in a slaughterhouse and with the killer being vegan that some might consider woke, but it feeds in to the killer's motive, which criticized by other reviewers. I found his motive great, and it's a shame it was never explored beyond surface level platitudes. He's only in the film for maybe 5-10 minutes, and never links to the protagonist, despite the writers establishing her personal background and a shared motif in their lives.

The ingredients were there to make this a truly riveting psychological thriller with a satisfying character driven narrative and conclusion.

Unfortunately, the script is mostly plot driven and then goes completely off the rails after their meeting, with not just one, but two ridiculous resolutions.

On a technical level the film is impressively shot. The director does some interesting camera work, though sometimes superfluous. There are a few montage edits, that feel jarring, but overall on a technical level this is a film that's shot and edited well, and not color graded to hell like so many modern films. Kudos to the DP.

The acting is a mixed bag. The actors mostly go through their scenes with workmanlike efficiency, but there is no room for them to really display their craft. There's no Anthony Hopkins or Tom Noonan theatricality here, nor really any emotion at all. The film feels very sterile, which is usually a sign of a rushed production. The best actor to me was the lady who played the killer's mother.

Overall this is a competently made film, which makes its shortcomings all the more frustrating. It could have been great. Photography, score, actors, it was all there. It just needed a better script and to devote more time to character building instead of social justice tropes that have nothing to do with character development or story. If those combined 10 minutes of dinner scene and mary sue scenes would have instead been used to establish a compelling connection between the killer and the protagonist, or even just scenes giving us an insight into the killer's mind, this would have been amazing.

Scores: Direction and technical aspects: 8/10 Writing: 3/10 Final 5/10 with a point deducted for wasted potential.

Nice start, then snoozy and silly
ThatDoesntMatter18 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning was really good.

But the woman cop, introduced as capable for 2 minutes, then goes up the stairs to enter the blown up apartment. Why was never revealed. Bad cop.

After that she just looks like a deer in the headlights.

Did not like her character, because there was no character. Empty. Not in an interesting way.

I like the actress, but this was just meh because of the boring script.

The politics was interesting at first, then got confusing and boring.

I like the actor, but this character was just a bit overblown. Made me want to rewatch The Boondock Saints again though. Overblown done RIGHT!

That zealous politicians lead to bad and tragic decisions was a good point of the movie. Maybe the only one.

The overkill and silliness throughout (e g. He could go to a homeless shelter to get clothes and food, no cameras or security there I'm sure; just wait till the nazis go back to their truck; everybody be less annoying please).

They could have caught him much sooner because all it took was a little logical thinking. Geez. Nothing special.

His mother should have killed him (oh, and bought him clothes and food.....).

The way lady cop talks to the killer is ridiculous. I did not care for their psych-101-philosophical ramblings and gaga reasonings.

And then it takes another 15 minutes till the end. Yawn.

How I wish he would have killed her. Or the ending he asked for, no police appearance.

Not recommended.
