Tis the season to be...well informed. We all love Christmas, but how much do any of us actually know about why Christmas is the way it is? Here are 31 facts about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and Rudolph that you (probably) didn’t know. Smarten up! 1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring. 2. December 25 was probably chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving. 3. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong. 4. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought...

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
There’s nothing quite like an outside threat to bring a family together, especially when that threat is of the undead variety. Siblings may not always get along, but when your sister’s soul is sought by a coven of witches, or when your mom is eyed as an eternal bride by a coffin-dwelling creep, it’s time to take those Sister Sledge lyrics to heart and become a family that can overcome anything—including wicked spells and sharp fangs. Set on respective fateful nights where the future of a homestead hangs in the balance and its up to siblings to save it, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire and Hocus Pocus are family-friendly films that make for a great double feature during the Halloween season.
Perhaps the less-known of the two films, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire will likely ring a nostalgic bell for...

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.
The Faculty

If you've enjoyed watching the adventures of Ichabod Crane, then you may be sad to hear that Fox has canceled Sleepy Hollow after four seasons.
Multiple sources, including Variety, have confirmed the news of Sleepy Hollow's cancelation, which suffered low ratings in its fourth season that aired from January–March of this year.
The show's fourth season was shorter than its previous installments (13 episodes compared to the usual 18) and featured a core cast transition following the departure of Nicole Beharie after the third season.
The series premiered in September of 2013, introducing viewers to a new take on Washington Irving's classic short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Tom Mison starred as Ichabod Crane, who was transported from 1781 to a modern-day Sleepy Hollow. Creepy carnage ensued as the Headless Horseman and other evil entities terrorized the community.

I have said, via social media, that it would be great if Sleepy Hollow could get back to its Season One glory. Tonight’s episode shows that it’s on the right track. Though with thirteen episodes (according to Wikipedia), it’s hard to tell whether it will withstand the test of time. Aside from that, let’s get on with the review, shall we? The hour began with Ichabod going apartment hunting. The place doesn’t seem to live up to the newspaper listing, but nothing ever is. Ichabod ended up taking the apartment after Jake said that the rent is cheaper than the

Halloween is a time when regular folk allow themselves to see the world as us horror lovers do – weird and wonderful, sinister mischief with tongue in cheek under (and over) tones. They watch that scary movie they’ve been meaning to get to for the past year, string up skeletons, and parade around at office parties in the latest ironic costumes (expect tons of Trumps and Weiners this year). But for the fearful faithful, this is our workaday; we watch the films daily, display our rooms with terror trinkets, and dress up as our favourite icons at constant conventions around the globe. So what separates the actual day of Halloween from our normal routine? TV viewing, of course.

Despite a misconception in some quarters that the name infamously tied to the words “Lost Colony” was made up for the series, and that this fictional ghost story was set in Virginia (Roanoke is in present day North Carolina), Roanoke is indeed a real place, and the ghost stories around it are every bit as strange—if not stranger—than anything American Horror Story has dreamed up.

An ancillary member of Team Wtf is back in this week’s Sleepy Hollow, and while his return is clunky, everything that surrounds it is very promising, indeed.
In other words, think of the hour in terms of Adele’s troubled performance on Monday’s Grammys, where The Kindred is a discordant microphone bloop on the piano strings… but the rest of the episode is buttery goodness that warms you from the inside and leaves you wanting more.
Because if Ben Franklin’s Frankenstein becoming sentient — and really getting into collages (?!) — is what it takes for Abbie and Ichabod to...

Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki is a brilliant cinematographer whose work has helped shape the landscape of modern cinematic photography. During his 32-year career, Lubezki has worked with such greats as Mike Nichols, Joel and Ethan Coen, Terrence Malick, and Michael Mann, as well as technology-defying directors such as Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu. He even worked alongside Martin Scorsese as a camera operator on The Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light, alongside Robert Richardson.
Lubezki’s latest project reunites him with Iñárritu for a brooding, intense historical epic about fur trapper Hugo Glass. Although the movie itself receives a somewhat mixed reception, Lubezki’s photography alone is worth the price of admission, as we noted in our yearly cinematography wrap-up. Before checking out The Revenant when it opens wide this Friday, we’ve selected some of our favorites in his illustrious filmography, each exquisite in their own unique ways. Please enjoy below,...

Here’s the weirdest thing about the long-heralded Bones/Sleepy Hollow crossover: It’s just not that weird.
I say that with a sense of pleasant surprise — and a lot of relief. As a formerly ardent-now-casual fan of Bones and someone who covers Sleepy Hollow for TVLine, I feared that the two-hour event would distill the quirkiest aspects of Brennan, Booth, Mills and Crane. (“Look at Ichabod gaping at Brennan’s mass spectrometer!” “See Booth and Abbie get into a pissing match about Bureau protocol!”)
That tactic, however, would overlook that both series are about a handful of oddballs with a whole lotta heart.

Once again I’m happy to be hosting an evening of vintage Disney features, shorts, and television episodes on Turner Classic Movies this Wednesday (Oct. 28) beginning at 8pm Est/5pm Pst. Any opportunity to see goodies from the Disney vault is cause for celebration as far as I’m concerned. With Halloween in mind, the TCM lineup includes The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), the two-part animated feature comprised of the witty “The Wind in the Willows” and the spooky “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which used to scare the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. One look at the Headless Horseman and you’ll understand. Then you’ll meet the original...

"We have this bubble that we've created within Sleepy Hollow. There's so much supernatural and the unexplained going on around the police procedural aspect of our show ... we don't want to open that door up to the rest of the world." That's what Executive Producer Clifton Campbell told BuddyTV. But isn't that what's exactly what will happen if Bones creeps into Abbie and Crane's world?
If you are a Sleepy Head, you may be freaking out a bit as the date of the crossover looms, but have no fear, your universe and it's mythology are pretty safe, but, (Holy Headless Horseman!) it is a close call with the Bones muggles poking around and shooting holes in things on Sleepy Hollow. Regardless, let's have some fun with it. Here are five teases from "Dead Men Tell No Tales" to divert your sleepy attention while you wait for the event to roll around.

This review contains spoilers.
3.1 I, Witness
Each new season of a television show has to hit just the right balance between the familiar and the fresh when it comes to plotlines and character arcs, and nowhere is this balance more tricky than in the season pilot. It’s at this first look that an audience both renews and resets its level of investment in the show moving forth. This week, Sleepy Hollow debuts its third season with an especially tall order--what does a show do once the Big Bad (in this case, the Apocalypse) has been vanquished and the leads have fulfilled their prophesied destiny of two seasons? Create a new Big Bad, and a new destiny, of course!

Every year as Halloween gets closer, basic cable and the DVD racks at big box stores are flooded with Halloween programming for kids—Disneyfied TV movies and animated specials featuring all their favorite characters in costume. But are these cash-ins any good? If you’re trying to foster a love of horror in your little ones—or just looking for something age-appropriate to show them during October—navigating the seas of “kid-friendly” content can be irritating at best, downright impossible at worst.
Because I both love horror movies and have small children, I have my own picks for what I’ll be showing my kids until they’re of an age for… oh, I don’t know… Cannibal Holocaust. All these choices are subjective and entirely dependent on what different kids can handle.
