Best episode so far
gharbinour14 September 2019
Tense and thrilling episode all the way. Character development reaches an all new level. There is so much in what it is not said, the silences are more powerful than any dialogues. The tension during the dinner scene is palpable, it's an interminable crescendo which implodes at the end in a very subtle way. Incredible acting and beautiful directing. I love Jeremy Strong's acting, minimal yet so intense.

Family dinner scenes never disappoint
charlieroxphonyx10 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Watching Logan Roy grimace and sweat as he tried to maintain composure while his family slowly devolved into their usual selves was hilarious, painful and too familiar, lol. I loved this episode and it really did a great job exposing the weaknesses of all the characters. Connor's out-of-touch perspectives. Tom's inability to not fall into the role of the whipping boy. Kendall's substance abuse issues. Roman's inability to connect and desire to keep people at an emotional distance. Shiv's discomfort of wanting the big seat but not sure if she's ready for the big seat. Marcia's yearning to be appreciated was new. All playing out over a meal while trying to pretend to be civilized....family.

Brilliantly observed social divisions
sberridge777 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We take for granted the social divisions in the UK, but what this episode did was to forensically dissect the social divisions in the USA. The social contrast between the Pierces and the Roys was so well done that it hurt to see how each side played against the middle in the fight for control. It mirrored the old school monied aristocracy of the Pierces against the new rich Roys in a way that skewered their differences. At the same time showing that there's no honour amongst thieves even though Nan Pierce made a big thing about honour. I also like how we the audience have privileged information about how attitudes were changed as in the Kendall Roy and Naomi Pierce relationship. I wonder how much old man Roy intuited this in his final play. This was an absolutely brilliant episode especially because Shiv Roy acted quite out of character, again for personal power reasons which may be her downfall.

"Money always wins."
bayleykedar17 November 2021
Arguably the best episode of the show to date. I found myself checking the runtime in the hopes of there being more to come, I truly never wanted it to end.

It is the most revealing that the show has ever been, I find the dynamics between the Roy family to be endlessly fascinating and this particular episode took this to an entirely new level. I spoke about Cox in my last review, declaring him as absolutely wondrous. Well, the man has ascended even higher, beyond description. A true craftsman, playing the role of a very layered individual to perfection. Unlike last season, I am beginning to admire Logan's persistence, the sheer force of his power. Even as he slowly alienates each and every member of his family, I, as the viewer, am in awe of his every move. I find myself going back and forth between hating him, then loving him.

Strong was phenomenal yet again. Key development for Kendall, Tom and Shiv, Roman and borderline every member of the family is on display in this episode. I cannot expand without spoiling, but the events of 'Tern Haven' have sent the show in a brand new, and remarkably exciting, direction. I felt and understood each character far more after this episode.

God, I hope this continues. It is a brilliant show, that I hope will continue this brilliant run of material.

Excellence
gonzanullo9 September 2019
This episode was pure gold. The writing is magnificent and the proof of that is how much you can feel the stress that Shiv, Roman and specially Kendall are dealing with. All the characters are very well written but these three are treasure and so are the actors that play them. Emmys and golden globes should give them that credit and if they don't they are idiots.

you can't pretend like someone you are not
ozgurme29 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with the scene that logan gives roles to each family member and warn them about their attitude during Pierce's home. But of course, pretending like someone else, someone actually you are not, is not sustainable. We see characters' "can't hide themselves" moments one by one and are watching the episode like watching the burning matchstick closing on to oil station. This tense situation have climax during dinner table -as usual in this series-.

Series offers us this great tension with also sense of sarcasm. Just brilliant.

This episode proofs this show is more than excellent.

I think this episode is underrated, it should have more than 9.3. What I have just seen was pure perfection. Just the dinner scene alone makes it one of the greatest episodes of all time. But that tension between the two families is captured amazingly all through from the Roy's family arrival to the Pierce's residence.

Jeremy Strong continues to be a phenomenal actor, he has so much charisma, and he is interesting just by staring at nothing. But I'd give a special credit to Sarah Snook here, it was her best performance so far.

The atmosphere they captured, the social observation, the whole Roy's family dynamic are done perfectly and it got me so involved that I watched with the mouth open. Wow. The writing - WOW. The camera - I love it.

The show is getting better and better when you already have some bonds to the characters that only disgusted you in the beginning of the show. Kendall, Shiv, Logan, and Tom - great character development and performances. Roman and Greg also start to show some really good acting and I'm sure they are gonna nail it as well. I LOVE the show.

Potential great episode ruined by deux ex machina plot device
prezike24 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really have come to really enjoy this show, but what happened here is beyond a head scratcher, and perhaps indicates the realities of pressure from a business POV to get the story moving along, because otherwise the key moment makes absolutely no sense.

Not sure how one can rate this episode so highly, even when to the point of Shiv's decision, it stood out, yes. Not quite where the season finale did last year, but was up there.

What she decided to do at the dinner made absolutely no sense for the "chosen one" who has shown impulsive behavior with her decisions, yet mostly pertaining to sex/relationships, but even there she has been calculating and I cannot recall anything remotely close to a decision like this with her career, where she has been highly shrewd.

No sane person would do what she did. Even her brother wouldn't. At a sensitive dinner/meeting you disclose a huge secret that no one else knows? WHAAAAT?

***EMOJIE OF ME SMACKING MY FOREHEAD***

What a terrible shame this moment was to impact a show that has been so good. I doubt the writers really wanted this moment to happen at all. Clearly, we can see that even a TV series on HBO has its limits to depth and growth.

I cannot explain it otherwise.

Peak TV drama right there!
and_mikkelsen8 March 2023
This episode was such a treat from beginning to end! This episode does a great job of exploring relevant themes and really shows what kind of familly the Roy's are! By putting them side by side with the Pierce familly we really see both the gab and similarities!

I have all kinds of praise for the dinner scene! Marvelous writing as the tension slowly builds cause you know something is gonna happen! Its scenes like this that makes this show so unique!

The acting is as always amazing! Everybody is doing their best to flesh out their character and show us who they really are!

Once again no idea where we go from here which is what makes me SO excited with so many predictable shows out there!

One of the most underrated TV episodes of all time
shakinbaconofficial7 November 2022
This episode is pretty much never talked about alongside some of the best episodes of TV, which is unsurprising to be fair. It's a middle of the season episode with no real major shift in the direction of the story unlike a lot of the most acclaimed episodes which tend to be filled with twists and turns and are often season finales.

But what you have in this episode is to me just perfect. Every single moment is brilliantly thought out by the writers and flawlessly executed by the cast and crew, delivering a story filled with detail, tension and emotional weight.

I can't think of an episode of Succession where we got so much insight into so many characters and it's a credit to the incredible writers of this great show.

And oh my god, the Kendall and Naomi plot line, so damn good.

Can't say enough, 10/10 and one of my favourite episodes ever.

Heartburn
Hitchcoc14 September 2022
As the whole clan descends on that place, those with a conscience can't help but hope for the worst. The Pierce family is so full of itself, that at times they seem as bad as their visitors. For all the niceties and crudities, ultimately it's about the buyout, the deal. We realize that this is a solid news group, but they are super rich and living off the fat of the land, and treat their servants as chattel. The pretend to be nice, but watch those people trying to please a houseful of jerks. It will be interesting to see what ultimately was on the table. Is Shiv still in? What is Tom's role? And what good is Roman under any circumstance.? Other than resident smart ass, what does he contribute? Kendall meets a soulmate which is probably a good thing. Now the battle can begin. They have more chips to play.

Wow
jawns1e26 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had to pause a couple of times in awe of the writing, how well every little nuance with Roman and Gerri's relationship, Shoiban potentially ruining the deal, Jeremy Strong is absolutely phenomenal in every episode, Cox is at his A game, Tom is acted perfectly, and Nicholas Braun is so great at the Michael Cera/Jesse Eisenberg style of comedy. The theme song of this show is potentially my favorite I've ever heard. The story is so layered and deep and the show simultaneously makes you love and hate every single character and, in this episode, all within the confines of an hour. I don't know how you could make a much better episode of television midseason.

I love the disfunction in this family
BruceWayne327 March 2022
I honestly do not like one character in the show besides Greg, the rest are all jerk offs, but I can't stop watching the cringe, it's amazing !

I think this is how super wealthy families really act And it makes me laugh how greed and insecurities can disband a family.

The dinner party scene is so fun to watch.

[7.8] Tern indeed
cjonesas11 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 5: A very instructive episode, especially at the dinner, chitchatting, making small conversations, subtly trying to close the deal, with the usual dysfunctional while prudent circus family members and the patriarch observing them with semi-interest, discontentment and repressed anger.

The acting was more than good, the development was good, the flow not so much; cause in the end, the artificial "money wins" happen, not always in real life though, but then, that's not real life we're witnessing and experiencing in this piece of a gem.

Excellent
8512223 December 2023
Greetings from Lithuania.

5th episode of season 4 "Succession" was pure excellence in writing, acting and storytelling. What we are absolving in "Succession" is a highly disfunction family and Tern Haven proved it to be correct. Then writing of this particular episode was amazing - so many dialogs yet everything simply connects. At the end i wanted more. And i believe i will get more in upcoming episodes, but so far with 5 episodes gone in season 2 i can only say that its a big improvement over season 1 so far. I did enjoyed season 1 first half but not as much as season 2. So far things are going very well here.
