gender swap nothing to do with being woke

DC owns Constantine and the character is already planned to be elsewhere in their own DC expanded universe and has already appeared in other DC animation. The Sandman is owned by Gaiman.

Loved the take on Constantine
milliemacdonald417 August 2022
I know some people were disappointed that we didn't get John Constantine here, and admittedly I was wary when I saw that Jenna Coleman had been cast as Johanna. But she only had to utter her very first line, to have me sold.

This isn't John, but I definitely felt like it was an alternate universe's John. Johanna is a bit cleaner, a bit more put together, but she still felt like Constantine to me, at her core.

I loved the episode itself as well, and the insight into some of the perils of what was happening to the world. I'm avoiding spoilers, but I felt that the introduction of certain characters and the way they showed the side-effects of certain items was very well done.

Magical

So far I ship Morpheus with every character he interacts with. Tom Sturridge has freaky chemistry with every actor/actress in front of him. I loved this episode more that the second but equal to the first one. Jenna Coleman rocks. I knew her from Doctor Who and her performance is not less brilliant than I remembered.

10/10.

Stars Shining Bright Above You...

Warning: Spoilers
It's really weird how we've had three references to the song "Dream a Little Dream of Me." First it was The Boys, then Stranger Things S4, and now this show. Just thought it was a funny observation. Anyway, this episode might be my favourite one so far, we get introduced to J. Constantine. Her character is incredible, I really like the development she gets this episode, and how distant but likeable she is as a character. I really hate the cliche of distant character who sets boundaries and doesn't talk to anyone. But here she isn't too distant, but she doesn't trust anyone either. I liked seeing Sandman showing a bit of affection and human empathy by granting her ex girlfriend life again. I feel like his development this season is going to be making him more empathetic as a character, instead of being cold and distant. I thought that the subplot between the mother and her son was pretty intriguing, although it felt a little rushed when the son all of a sudden forgave the mother when he was pretty spiteful to her earlier, and I would've liked to see that be explored more than it was. The dialogue felt pretty natural, some CGI again was pretty meh. Great cinematography and acting, etc etc you get the gist.

8-8.5/10.

Was it necessary?
gruminion-069229 August 2022
Aight episode but then again why can't they be faithful to the comics. Read the comics last night and it was epic and the feeling the character of john gives is not really given by Johanna.

For those thinking its a gender swap its really not they just freaking changed the whole character.

There was no gender swap

Even a quick google search shows that in the comics Johanna is a descendant of John.

Show far this show is really interesting. Hope it stays on this path and not let us down.

I've got a bag of sand

Some cool moments but the storyline is getting to feel a bit disjointed, many scene jumps and short conversations. Though great sets and cinematography.

A perfection

Episode 3 of The Sandman begins with Dream arriving to see Johanna Constantine. After a rather lucid dream involving a guy called Logue summoning demons, she awakens in the back of a taxi. After paying her way, she steps out and is warned by an old woman called Hettie, telling her that Morpheus is back. Dream soon appears before her, telling Johanna that they have business. She shrugs it off though, more preoccupied by the exorcism she has to deal with. And it doesn't take long for the demon to show itself, possessing a man called Kevin. After destroying its host, the demon turns on Johanna. That is, until Dream shows up. He recognizes the demon as Agilieth, who promises to show Dream where his helm is. Johanna refuses to listen though and exorcises him back to Hell. Dream tries to convince Johanna to hand over the sand pouch but it turns out she actually sold it a while back. Lucienne ignores Dream's wishes and shows up with a raven called Matthew. Realizing he can approach Johanna in her dreams, Dream sees her darkest fears and waits for her to awaken. As the pair talk, Johanna realizes just where his sand may be - Rachel Moodie, her old flame. Johanna demands Dream stay outside and heads in alone to confront her ex and get the sand back. His raven, Matthew, also warns that humans aren't trustworthy when he rocks up. Episode 3 of The Sandman is where some of the cracks in this production start to show. Don't get me wrong, it's still an enjoyable watch but I'm not quite sure why John Constantine was switched for Johanna. Now, in the comics this is actually the much more recognisable John Constantine, who is happy to team up with Dream. While it's an interesting change, avid comic readers will probably note that Johanna shows up in a different story in a different time period, so it'll be interesting to see how this show handles that. Not only that, but large swathes of this episode are taken up by meaningless subplots that don't have any bearing on the main plot. The whole Ethel/John scenes are drawn out and do nothing other than pass the torch from mother to child...something we already knew would happen thanks to the prophecy from The Three.

Gender swap
martynrichardfield16 August 2022
Why, just why? I'm a fan of the source material and love John Constantine. Why change the character, what was the need? Part of the appeal of the character was that HE was a mess, a chain smoking, drinking mess of a man, and that made his character relatable when he swore, was rude or abrupt. This version is just plain arrogant and un likeable!

Good but could have been better
ha77y73ad975 September 2022
With being such a fan of the Matt Ryan version of John Constantine but after understanding the reasoning behind using the ancestors name for the show it was ok. The CW holds the rights to the character on "tv" which is annoying and would have been epic if the true character from the comics would have been used!

Overall the story of this episode was spot on for the comics as well but hearing Joanna talk like John just didnt hit the same cords. The Newcastle story line is great to drop in as thats never truly been seen in tv. So much of this story is emotional corruption because of the Sand, portrayed well and sets up the best part of the first arc of the comic run!

Jenna Coleman is perfect as Johanna Constantine!
davidbogensberger18 August 2022
She played the role so incredibly well, fully bringing out all the complexity of the newly created character. You can directly see how she has moved up and on from her working class roots, has incredibly confidence, constantly swears, and uses deflection as a defence mechanism to hide her true core. How she excels at her craft, treats others, especially Dream with no respect, until things become personal.

Of the single episode characters of the show, Johanna is the most intriguing, and complex. But none of that would work if it weren't for Coleman's magnificent portrayal of her. She completely commanded the screen in all her scenes, and really captured the very essence of the character. This is a very different role from anything she's played before, but she showcases her acting talent yet again.

I really hope we see 21st Century Johanna Constantine again! She is loosely based on John, but has had her own storyline set up now, and that could easily be explored some more. Johanna Constantine has too great of a setup, and Jenna Coleman's portrayal of her is too good for this to be all we get to see of her!

And for those giving bad reviews because John Constantine wasn't in the show, be aware that The Sandman did not have the rights to John, and the producers had a clear intention of having the two Constantines of the Sandman story be played by the same actress. Though Johanna has some similarities with John, she deliberately has many more differences. She should be considered as her own separate character, she's not a genderbent John. What Johanna's story explores is what a successful, trusted exorcist Constantine would be like. And it was done brilliantly.

[8.2] CGI gore and magic
cjonesas26 October 2022
Episode 3: Very interesting of an episode with countless deep fantasy woko-unrealistic messages, gorgeous cinematography, CGI and visual effects for the pleasure of eye candy lovers. Deep storyline and plots adaptation doing justice to the comics, a somewhat unrealistic and weak flow at the same time while the vibe is shinier, all the while telling the story in a mishmash way. The weakest link of the episodes so far is its convoluted, sort of slow burn storytelling, having all the bright ingredients, but falling to coherently grab viewers interest.

Jena Coleman is as marvelous as always, just not the right actress for the role of Constantine. She is very good in drama, emotional roles, but not fit for fantasy magic realm ones.

Is this a disney show or??
markoperosevic9419 September 2022
I draw the line on this episode. I just have to. Cannot see myself enjoying a show after this so I am definitely stopping. How can the quality of series decrease so drastically from episode 1 to 3 is beyond me. So bland and boring. Constantine actress is so cringe I just don't feel comfortable whenever she is speaking and making bada** faces. This type of character is so washed out and I have seen it in a million other series and movies. And no I have not read any comics or anything like that, it's just stupid. Let's not even talk about woke elements that are so annoying and obvious. We have two "romances" in first 3 episodes and neither of them is a classic "boy and girl". I guess it's outdated in 2022.

Jenna Coleman is the stinker that just won't flush
RogerBorg19 November 2022
Oh dear. I have no particular problem with femswapping John Constantine for his descendent Joanna. I don't even particular care that they have her playing a lipstick-lesbian - that's an issue for lesbians (if any still exist) to get salty over.

No, my problem here is that they cast Jenna Coleman to play exactly the same character that Jenna Coleman always plays: the smug, cocky, self assured, arrogant, ageing-girlboss-who-is-the-key-to-everything.

And that's exactly what we get here, an insufferable performance where Coleman barely tolerates other actors - including the series lead - sharing her scenes. She shows no uncertainty, no insecurity, no vulnerability. Contrast with the original source, and with the performances by Keanu Reeves and Matt Ryan in previous and far better incarnations of Constantine.

It's sad that Coleman has never developed any range, but sadder still that she keeps getting cast by people who should know that, but who inexplicably expect something better from her.

Felt like it was a Constantine spin-off series, Sandman's protagonism was ripped from him
eunbi05307 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The lack of John Constantine in the series is shameful, but understandable - for those who don't know, HBO has the rights over him and they are working on a project for themselves already -, so the alternative Netflix decided to use was creating Johanna Constantine 2 - "2" because in Sandman's comics there is already a character called Johanna Constantine, which is one of John's ancestors. Johanna 2 has several problems: the acting is mediocre, both her story with Astra and exorcising the demon are completely unnecessary to Sandman - no, Morpheus doesn't need a random demon to tell him who is in possession of his helmet -, her character is borderline disrespectful towards Sandman and, to top it off, Morpheus almost leaves a woman to painfully die by being exposed to his pouch, but he is the one that offers to remove Johanna 2's nightmares (to make it clear, Sandman doesn't "care" about humans, he wouldn't care about Rachel dying painfully, he wouldn't care about Johanna 2's nightmares, but the show made Dream interested in solving Constantine's nightmares without her asking) , when in the original John that asks Dream to deal with the bad dreams he has been having. Also Johanna does not even thank Dream for helping her out, rude.

This chapter was another missed opportunity to have Morpheus show his lordship over dreams, when they enter Rachel's place there was supposed to be dreams everywhere by the influence of the pouch, Johanna 2 was supposed to be creeped out - which wouldn't sit well after they tried to make her look tough in the series, even John was creeped out, so why wouldn't she? - and Morpheus would be able to make the dreams stand back because he is, after all, their lord. The writers decided to take this important moment from the story just to have the bad ass trophy handled to Johanna 2.

By the way, Matthew shouldn't show up already, this was probably requested by Netflix to have a comic relief and he will probably have more scenes than he is supposed to because of that.

I was just starting to get into it...
Little-c8 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Always rely on Coleman to twitter on, in and out of several diabolical accents, ruining a perfectly good TV show. It should be a rule to cast LGBT in the role instead of giving the part to a straight actor/actress it's really not on. It's the equivalent of casting a white person as an Asian, just shouldn't be done.

I was truly enjoying the series until this episode, shocked it was Thewlis who hit the final nail in, I just couldn't continue there is literally no plot.
