A format built for commercials
jonassladen2 January 2022
Although the situations were ridiculous, for sheer entertainment not to be taken seriously, the movie and acting were okay.

You could run thru a long list of impossibilities and lucky breaks for: the main character, the egotistical stupidity of the hunters, and the bravado of the hunt organizer.

And even though the Tiro Fund has an efficient cleaner, the hunters (as well as the hunted) leave trails miles long. Their organization would have been busted ages ago.

As for the controversy over the Quibi format and breaking a movie into multiple quick chunks (at least when played on Roku and similar channels), they do it to intersperse 45 seconds of commercials every 8 to 10 minutes between episodes. Hulu and others practically do the same thing, but even worse, by breaking up movies or episodes every 10 to 15 minutes with a full two minutes of untimely commercials that destroy continuity.

Movie made worse by Quibi
colahan22 April 2020
This isn't a show, it's a movie that no one was willing to distribute so Quibi purchased it for the original content. Then Quibi took a 2-hour movie and chopped it into 15, 7-8 minute "episodes", releasing 1 "episode" each weekday for 3 weeks. If I sound annoyed about spending 3 weeks to watch a mediocre movie then you're more perceptive than the people at Quibi. Movies and tv shows are typically written in 3 acts. A 30-minute show is actually 22-minutes of content after you remove the commercials, so divided by 3, each act is about 7-minutes. This format can work for tv. Do you like watching movies 7-8 minutes at a time? Maybe it's ok if I've seen the movie before, but it's hard to remember or care about the characters and their story. 7-8 minutes is barely enough time to form any emotional connection to what's happening. I think it could work if they drop the entire "show" at once, edited into the same 7-8 minute pieces, and then allow the viewer to stop or keep going. Releasing one "episode" per weekday takes that choice away from the viewer who might actually enjoy the movie, story, acting, etc more if they were able to view it as the filmmaker intended. All in all, the film isn't bad. It's corny (dialogue) and unoriginal (Running Man), but Waltz is awesome in everything and it's still a fun ride. Just prepare for this roller coaster to stop every 7 minutes and not start again for 24-72 hours (because weekends).

Very entertaining but I don't enjoy Quibi format
jtai216 June 2020
I enjoyed it. Each episode had plenty of action or suspense to keep you engaged. But this format has to keep high engagement to keep you coming back daily for 3 weeks.

However, I can't say I'm a fan of the Quibi format of 7-9 min daily episodes, or just waiting for the series to complete then binge watching. It makes for good bathroom viewing, I suppose, or if you need a quick break for the day. I don't think I'll be continuing with Quibi beyond the trial when there's already so many online viewing options. Quibi seems to be great for our attention deficit culture.

God awful
thaicoons16 October 2020
If it didn't have Hemsworth and Waltz in it, this'd be a 3.9 star rated low budget it is, the star power is making people rate it much too high. It's not just the plot holes, like wouldn't the hero plan his last day on Earth a little better, maybe scout locations, pick those with best odds of survival rather than run off at random? The biggest problem this movie has, they spent so much on the two big guns they couldn't afford decent villains so we're stuck with hopelessly cast sub par actors and to make it even worse, the villains are just bad. The icing on the cake is the Quibi format, it just kills what little cinematic pleasure there might be left. Best skipped and forgotten about.

Fun Thriller, no frills, just enjoy
northernsoul-112 July 2022
Okay, I'll come straight out of the traps and say; the premise of this movie (like every "game" movie or series) is highly unrealistic.

I'll also say: it doesn't matter. Suspend your disbelief, it's a thriller.

It's well scripted, well acted, well paced. Christopher Walt is phenomenal as always. Hemsworth plays his part well, the hunters, especially Webster as the British gentleman ice pick hunter, are on point.

Put your logical brain at the door, relax, pour yourself a drink and just enjoy.

A solid show
danielbrongo17 April 2020
This could possibly be the best acting performance in Liam Hemsworth career. This show is filled with action and suspense. I have enjoyed every episode so far, it might be a little slow at first, as you may be like me eager to know how this is going to occur and if he will survive. It is an interesting concept that makes you curious of what will happen next. Liam does a very good job at allowing you to build an interest and relationship with the character. The possibilities for the way this show will end is extremely interesting. There seems to still be plenty of content left and the suspense I am sure will continue. It's a good watch, every episode brings something new.

Two episodes to go
greenhouse350522 August 2020
I've just finished ep13. An interesting twist has me now wanting to watch the last 15mins. It's been rather humdrum up until now. The pace has been good. The acting, average. But the tension, lacking. Nothing we haven't seen before. The format is annoying. Taking a movie and cutting into pieces ruins the continuity and makes it hard to get behind the main cast. Still, decent enough if you watch them all back to back like I am doing. The one thing I do like is that now I get to make a coffee before watching the last 2 episodes. Curious to see how this twist plays out. However, I'm not expecting much, but still curious.

Modern day Running Man - but watch as full film
stevefairmort16 July 2022
Watched as a full film on Prime rather than a short episodes. Standard action film, nothing too cerebal but good fun, felt a bit like a modern day Running Man.

Good Stuff
tnothnagle2 May 2020
The movie itself is typical B movie action fare. The type of movie Bruce Willis and Jeremy Irons would have headlined a generation ago. Better acted than most, and filming on location in gritty downtown Detroit added a nice atmosphere. It's actually beautifully shot, with Hemsworth and Walz delivering solidly.

A word about the format, since a few commenters are complaining. This movie is not meant to be binged, and it's not an episodic TV show in the traditional sense. It's more like a return to the serial. 60 years ago, if you went to the movies, while waiting for the feature, you would see a one reel serial, about 10 minutes. It might be Buck Rogers, or the Lone Ranger, or something long forgotten. It would continue week after week. Each one would have a cliffhanger to bring you back.

I watched this movie in 1, sometimes 2, episode bursts, when I had a little free time during the workday. It was a great escape.

Waltz Carriies The Movie
omendata22 October 2021
As he usually does, Christophe Waltz is the best thing in it, whereas Hems'wood could have been replaced by any actor or a 2 by 4. Story is competently written, even though it has been done to death a good few times in many other movies over the decades.

Problem is , some of the acting i.e. The black priest in the church scene is dreadful and the movie brings nothing really that new to the genre.

I watched the full movie version and not the individual episodes and at 2 hours it fitted the bill. There were, to be fair, some good characters;; including the English hitman and high kicking oriental girl but the kills and action was a bit tame and lazy.

Overall it is not a bad nights watch and deserves a slightly above average 6.5/10 as Christophe Waltz adds sparkle to any movie he stars in and without him it would have gotten a very average 5/10.

The Stupid ... it hurts!
bwdude5 August 2020
While production and acting are mostly fine, you need to be able to turn off any logic or thinking to be able to watch this through.

Liam Hemsworth ist running from his hunters (not a spoiler). But the ways they "find" him is so unimaginably stupid and downright impossible, it makes you wonder who wrote this and who greenlit it?

Even the "twist" at the end is completely constructed out of thin air.

No fun to watch, but could have been quite good if thought through. Also I don't get the format. It's basically a movie, chopped into parts. Why?

Watch the movie
Just-A-Girl-1421 September 2021
It's listed as a show on IMDb and it seems from the reviews that it was a show at some point, I watched as a movie on Prime Video. For someone who hates hunting (of animals), I really enjoyed this movie. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Liam Hemsworth is doing a great job. The pace of the movie is also pretty good, there's not a dull moment. It's not a new concept but hunting a man in the middle of the city is interesting. I was expecting the hunting to be in the woods. I agree that some of it would be a bit hard to buy but it's an action movie so that's nothing new. It's good mixture of a survival and an action movie. If you like both genres, give this one a try.

Action is missing
noonsaletriton30 September 2021
Sorry to say but for an action movie, the action scenes are bad..! Which makes the film pretty damaged. Hopefully the 4K HDR images look good in Detroit.

Really Exciting...If You are 9 Years Old
leftbanker-118 August 2020
Completely stupid for any adult. This was absolutely terrible, not everything about it, but the bad parts were such an insult to the intelligence of anyone older than 9. I've learned my lesson and I turned this off well before the end. I don't know how it ends, and I definitely don't care, I just couldn't take another second.

After several occasions when the prey walks into the trap set by one of the hunters, it just became too incredibly stupid.

So here is the Quibi formula: make a low budget movie, then slice it into 6-7 minute parts. Spoiler Alert: it's still a lousy movie, not matter how many times you cut it.

some good acting and a refreshing script despite a hackneyed premise; wretched pacing and no remarkable scenes detract potential
jdring200714 May 2022
Has a decent start but seems to drag overall, doesn't really pick up until about halfway through. Even then, it experiences this constant pendulum of activity; just when you think it's getting good or intense, it drags its feet some more. Liam and Christoph are great, as are the supporting players, but among the antagonists I found Chris Webster particularly enjoyable. While the basis of the plot isn't anything new, something about how it was handled felt fresh and I can appreciate that. Unfortunately those are all of its pros. A lot of squandered potential; unless you're expecting more of a drama with some elements of suspense, then you might enjoy it more. (wrote review for movie version)

Loved it. Constantly thrilling and engaging
iamkeysersoze-1322822 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Most Dangerous Game is such a great show and so far the second best show on Quibi (behind When The Streetlights Turn On)

Most Dangerous Game is an absolutely thrill ride from start to finish. It takes a premise we've seen before and makes it feel fresh and original. All 15 episodes are genuinely all in the B+ quality. There are a are minor flaws but you can really overlook them.

It never manages to be slow, dull and boring and although we know Liam will always narrowly avoid death, it still keeps us on edge cause we don't know what's going to happen. The execution is really terrific because of that and it ends perfectly.

Liam Hemsworth is actually great here. He really does steal the show. He really gives a good performance and manages to carry the show. Christoph Waltz is also very good as well although it's far from his best performance.

One thing I will say it is better to watch this all in one sitting cause it flows a lot better and is a lot more exciting than watching 8 minutes a day.

Show Runner
kosmasp28 July 2022
Sorry for the pun - also I watched this as a movie. So they put all episodes together and made it a movie. I have no idea why it would have been a show in the first place. As in it doesn't seem to warrant that at all. But you may feel different - all I can say is that I can't tell you what breaks would have done for my viewing experience.

What I can tell you: the movie (show) is quite good overall. I did not really expect this. And that is no dig at the other Hemsworth (I mean we all are in awe of Chris, right?), but just a movie or a concept we have seen quite a few times. And yet it does keep it fresh overall.

There are some rules and settings that make this interesting. There are still cliches and predictable turns (when it comes to characters), but there are also some neat twists, that I quite liked. All in all a decent action thriller, with a guy that seems to have more luck than brains - again no pun intended.

Actually surprisingly good but only if you watch the whole thing as movies should be watched, in one setting. The end su#ks a little but isn't horrible. Overall a good watch.

Format wrong, story solid
dar041723 September 2020
Forgetting about how you may have watched this film it was enjoyable. If you look at it as a whole film and not chopped up it was entertaining. The story has been done many times. There is so much tension and action in this film there isn't time to get bored.

Intriguing, Crisp and wastes no Time.

MOST DANGEROUS GAME S01 (2020) REVIEW #mostdangerousgame #mostdangerousgame review #liamhemsworth #ChristophWaltz . . . Plot: Suffering from brain tumor, Dodge ends up in a game of hunt where he has to survive 24 hours so that he can secure his family's financial debts. . . . Review : Welcome to the new way to storytelling, stories splitted into chapters in form of episodes. The mobile streaming platform Quibi has released a new thriller series with 15eps of approx 9mins each. Most Dangerous Game is a brilliantly directed , intriguing , gritty , adrenaline rush you dont want to miss. With premise which is not uncommon as this one is, we have seen survival shows many times and in many forms. This one is fresh with brilliant and tight screenplay, to the point editing and crisp twists which keeps you hooked in the show.

Liam Hemsworth as Dodge is commendable in this show. He is fearsome , desperate and vulnerable. The Showman is Christoph Waltz, his pitch perfect dialogues are well written and he plays good bad manager of the so called most dangerous game. Sarah Gadon has provided good support as wife of Dodge. The Hunter Chris Webster as Nixon gives you chills everytime he is on set.

Overall This show wastes no time, has crisp screenplay and a brilliant watch. Only disappointed was it oddly unsatisfactory ending. Nevertheless Watch it for the engaging thrills and acting. You wont realise when you finished 15episodes. . . Goods : 1. Christoph Waltz 2. Liam Hemsworth 3. Engaging Premise .

Bads : 1. Odd and Blunt Ending.

Final Rating : 7.5/10 . . Verdict : Definitely Worthy of your time. . .

boring
MrNotaRobot2 November 2020
Its ridicilous. So many holes in the story and even more cliches. The main character is always saved by the miracle in the last second. Money is flowing out of nowhere in billions and coincidences happen more often than in fairy tales.

Doesn't work as a movie
R_Alex_Jenkins8 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The concept is great: survive the hunt for as long as possible and get paid an increasing amount of money for every hour survived.

So why doesn't the movie work? For all sorts of reasons.

Five hunters, of which there were a maximum of three in the game at any given moment, and sometimes only one or two. Why? The hunted prey gives out a location ping every hour, so why aren't all five taking part?

The ridiculous odds of being able to predict an exact location that the prey would head to is too implausible to be realistic. Not only that, but commandeering the church, making it inaccessible to the general public and knowing that the prey would go exactly to 'confession' was just too ridiculous. It reminded me of later Saw movies in which everything is pre-planned in reverse order. There comes a point where you just cannot predict that much. They tried to explain away the implausibilities through narrative, but that didn't make them any less implausible. And the stereotypical hoo-hah-hah villains were just plain annoying, especially the vicar hunter.

Also, the changing of the rules concerning firearms irritated me quite a bit. So, it's OK to riddle an entire gang with machine gun bullets to get to the prey, but not OK to kill the prey itself with a gun? Don't be ridiculous! If guns are not allowed, that's it; you can't just administer the final kill with a knife and say that's acceptable because it's not a gun. The gun was used to get to that point in the hunt.

Making things realistic and plausible seems less of an option in movies these days because of how fast they're being churned out, which is what spoiled this quite entertaining concept and movie considerably. If they had kept it simple, it could have been a great watch.

It was so inconsistent! The idea is to corner the prey through gradual pressure and take it down. So, why would you throw a knife in broad daylight at a fully populated train, smashing a window in the process? About 50 witnesses saw that. And walking through a shopping mall with a visibly giant hunting knife stuck in the prey's ribs? If you're going to throw knives and use uzis to eliminate entire gangs, why not just stick the knife in and run away?

And where were the cops at key moments? Having brunch? Oh, come on! You can't bribe or blind every cop in the city, surely? Nor were there any cops or security on the cruise boat, which just so happened to have a hunter conveniently dressed in waitress uniform onboard, on the off chance that a ticket would be stolen for the voyage by the prey? Come off it, you can't possibly predict such things.

Funnily enough, I found Most Dangerous Game to be quite entertaining, but am much more frustrated at all the little no-go areas that spiraled it into being a dud. You can't just explode an entire factory, hug your wife because you've survived to daylight and then walk into the sunset with 24 million in the bank! Well, you can, but only in movies.
