James Mangold’s Logan is one of the most respected and critically acclaimed works surrounding the character of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman gave the performance of his life, and the story and script helped him through every step of the way. Although the film’s premise could not have been more beautiful and fans adored the direction the film took, many expected the story to follow the comic book series, Old Man Logan.
A still from Logan
While it did take some inspiration, the story is unique enough to have little to no proper source material. Many fans were surprised by such an approach, as the comic’s story was one of the most tragic and dark ones. It paints the picture of a barren world, having been ruled by villains for too many years.
While many would have chosen this story itself, Mangold revealed why he did not take such an approach.

The year was 2013. With Marvel raking in billions at the box office with its interconnected superhero movies, it was time for DC to kick off its own extended universe. After all, Marvel had taken characters like Iron Man and Thor (both relatively obscure at the time) and Captain America (hopelessly old fashioned) and turned them into bone-fide sensations that led to 2012's The Avengers.
Zack Snyder led the charge on creating a DC Extended Universe, directing many of the franchise's films and producing most of the others.
But Zack Snyder's Dceu never did match the success of its rival franchise, and after a decade of faltering box office receipts and 'meh' reviews the whole thing came to an anticlimactic end with the 2023 flop Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Now the entire thing is getting rebooted. So what does Zack Snyder think of that?

“The Watchers” is nearly here.
Based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine and written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the horror-thriller has just debuted a skin-crawling trailer, which you can watch above.
In “The Watchers,” Dakota Fanning plays a young woman who gets lost in the woods with her pet parrot. Soon, she starts hearing menacing noises and is ushered into a bunker by a kindly older woman (Olwen Fouéré). There, she meets two more people (Georgina Campbell and Oliver Finnegan), who tell her that they are being watched by otherworldly beings just outside the bunker walls. Is there any way to get out alive?
TheWrap spoke to Shyamalan about “The Watchers,” which is her feature debut after serving as a writer, director and producer on “Servant” and a second unit director on “Old” and “Knock at the Cabin” — all projects from her father,...

Guess who's back ... back again? With no disrespect intended towards Slim Shady, he's got nothing on the run that M. Night Shyamalan is currently on. The horror-focused writer/director might remain as divisive as ever, but he's all but put to rest any doubts about whether he still has the juice or not (as the kids say). After wrapping up his "Eastrail 177" trilogy -- that's "Unbreakable," "Split," and "Glass" for the uninitiated -- and getting the franchise fever out of his system, Shyamalan has focused almost exclusively on bold adaptations like "Old" and "Knock at the Cabin." Meanwhile, on the television side of things, he brought the Apple TV+ series "Servant" to an unsettling end and has even found time to watch his daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan get ready to make her feature directing debut with the upcoming "The Watchers."

Naruto is one of the most popular anime of all time. Masashi Kishimoto began writing the manga in 1999, and in 2001, it was adapted into an anime. The anime ended in 2017 after Naruto Uzumaki fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming the Hokage. It is one of the Big Three of anime and had a massive role in turning anime mainstream.
Naruto ended seven years ago, but people still prefer it over new-generation anime. Even though the Naruto franchise is regarded as one of the greatest, initially, the creator had thought of a not-so-engaging plot for his magnum opus. Masashi Kishimoto was forced to change his story and create a new one. It proved to be a generation story and his greatest work to date.

FromSoftware is without a doubt a trailblazer when it comes to designing excellent soulslike experiences. And it’s not like they have just started with this stuff; they have been doing it since 2009 with games like Demon Souls. All that has led to them making a massive blockbuster like Elden Ring all these years later.
But these kinds of incredible experiences can only be crafted when developers are focused. Not just on making a good game, but also on making sure their vision translates as it is to their games, so fans can get it as it is. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has obviously made sure his vision remains uncompromised, as his games are usually full of incredibly inventive design choices. Recently, he opened up about how he went about achieving that vision.

Final Fantasy 7 was originally released in 1997, and at the time was a technical marvel and a masterpiece from Square Enix. Fans have been invested in the lore and the characters, then two decades later the game received the triple-a remake and has been divided into three separate parts to form the perfect trilogy. The second part just came out and Square Enix is already working on the final chapter.
It is foolish to assume that Square Enix would not complete the trilogy, given the amount of success the first two had despite being locked to PlayStation as a timed exclusive, the games did exceptionally well. The franchise has been introduced to a new generation of fans and honored the memory of original fans in a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.
At the moment, the third act of the original game is now being worked on by the developers.

9 years on and Bloodborne continues to be spoken about whenever the discussion about FromSoftware games begins. The game was highly acclaimed for bringing horror to life with its unsettling atmosphere and aesthetic visuals.
It was also named the 2015 Game of the Year while being a close contender for the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2015. 8 years later, a poll conducted by GQ in 2023 showed that a team of video game journalists ranked Bloodborne as the fourth-best video game of all time.

The daughter of an iconic horror filmmaker making a thriller about a father sacrificing himself? Just don’t call it meta.
Caitlin Cronenberg’s directorial feature debut “Humane” is a family thriller starring Peter Gallagher as a patriarch whose suicide plan goes haywire, leaving his children (Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire) to fight for their own survival. Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror auteur David Cronenberg; her brother Brandon Cronenberg helmed “Possessor” and buzzy thriller “Infinity Pool.”

It’s Oscar night! While some of us might may feel the Academy Awards have lost their lustre over the years a bit, it can’t be denied that over the last twenty years, so absolutely amazing movies have won for Best Picture. And, well, some pretty lame movies won too. If this poll, we want you to choose your favorite, and then, in the comments, let us know what you think the worst is. For me, the choice is pretty easy: Crash. While I enjoyed it back in 2004, I can’t say it’s aged all that well. The Artist also really didn’t deserve Best Picture. Am I right?

Hidetaka Miyazaki likes making excellent video games. And when he is done making those games, he instantly goes around to making even better DLCs for those games. This has been evident from the work he has done previously. Pretty much every game before Elden Ring FromSoftware has released had an expansion, and each one of those expansions only made those games better.
And now, after more than two years of launching their last game, Elden Ring, they are once again preparing an incredible new expansion. This expansion promises a new map with a bunch of new areas to explore. A bunch of new bosses and new lore. But the director thinks there’s something else that makes it stand out from everything they have done before.

The fight against Automatons and Terminids in the third-person co-op shooter title Helldivers 2 is well underway as players look to deliver democracy to the citizens of Super Earth. The conversation around the best weapons in the game has also begun, with players looking to be well-equipped before they take on oppressive forces.
However, despite players using the best weapons available, some enemies are much more overpowered and harder to defeat than others. This is where players are drawing the line, and they are now requesting developer Arrowhead Game Studios to nerf one Terminid enemy.

One Helldivers 2 player, Vaye_the_Cat, took to the Helldivers subreddit and complained that they are having problems with the armor plating of Charger and that it is “way too strong” in comparison to the enemy’s threat level.

Many Helldivers 2 players have been facing the impossible, as more planets are being invaded by the Automatons, and aliens plague the universe. This risks the fall of Super Earth, but with more weapons and players already joining, and a million more on the way, we can only hope these planets become free sometime soon.
One of the most recent planets to have fallen is known as Malevelon Creek, which players have dubbed “Space Vietnam.” Recently, this planet fell to Automaton control, and gamers brought back an old meme in an attempt to introduce humor to this plight.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out worldwide and gamers, those on PlayStation 5 at least, are having the time of their lives but faced with a decision to favor either framerate or resolution, an issue that Mirror’s Edge doesn’t have despite being an old Xbox 360 title that can achieve a crispy 4K resolution with 60 frames per second thanks to the backward compatibility on the Xbox Series X which makes the Starfield situation a little more awkward.
Games nowadays look even better than they have before and some may say better than real life, however, they struggle at running games with high frame rates and resolution. Developers have given users on modern consoles the option to either go for a better performance which will affect the resolution and vice versa.
Performance Or Resolution: Which Matters More In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth? Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be played on either Graphics Mode or Performance Mode.

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy excelled at many things, but special mention should be given to the films’ action set pieces and the attention to detail. In one of the crucial scenes in the second film, The Two Towers, Saruman’s army of Uruk-hai march towards the Helm’s Deep fortress, and the army at Aragorn’s command prepares to counter the attack. As the Orc-breeds line up in front of the fortress, one of the old archers under Aragorn’s command prematurely shoots an arrow.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
For years, fans believed that if this one mistake from the archer had been avoided, casualties would have been much less for the defenders before Gandalf and Éomer arrived with the Rohirrim. However, an expert archer reveals that the scene in the film was technically accurate and explains what happened in the scene.

Ishana Shyamalan is stepping up, taking the director’s chair from her dad, M. Night Shyamalan, for a new horror mystery flick called ‘The Watchers’. She’s not new to this game, having worked on ‘The Servant’ series and been an assistant director on movies like ‘Old’ and ‘Knock at the Cabin’. Now at 22, she’s ready to scare us with her own movie.
‘The Watchers’ is grabbing attention already, with New Line Cinema backing it and big names like Dakota Fanning starring. It’s based on a book by A.M. Shine, where a 28-year-old named Mina gets stuck in a creepy forest in Ireland with three others, and they’re all being watched by something eerie. Sounds like a mix of ‘Cabin In The Woods’ and ‘Lost’, right? You can check out the trailer below to get a taste of what’s coming.

Last February, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. Now Hartnett has talked to IndieWire about Trap, describing the thriller as bizarre, dark, and wild.
IndieWire caught up with Harnett at the SAG Awards, and when they asked him about his role in Trap, he replied, “It’s a pivot, but I try to make all of my roles pivots. If you’re playing the same thing again and again, it gets boring to the audience. Working with M. Night was one of the best experiences of my career.

Rare Picture of Leonardo DiCaprio and Monica Bellucci Before His Titanic Fame Will Make You Feel Old
With Leonardo DiCaprio approaching 50 and Monica Bellucci approaching 60, it’ll be almost three decades since dating rumors between the two ignited, thanks to one photo. It remains unconfirmed if they were ever romantically inclined towards each other as nothing apart from that pic suggested that being the case, which has once again gone viral since finding its way to the internet.
1995 was a major year for DiCaprio, as it was only four years since the actor made his debut, which witnessed him garnering major exposure with The Basketball Diaries and The Quick and the Dead. ’95 was also the same year when he would cross paths with the Italian sensation Monica Bellucci.

Exclusive: Dominic Sessa, the 21-year-old rising star, didn’t win a Supporting Actor BAFTA Award Sunday night — that went to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. — but he did pick up his first post-The Holdovers role that will see him starring with Rose Byrne in director Stephanie Laing’s drama Tow.
This news was confirmed by several sources over the BAFTA Awards weekend where your intrepid columnist attended more soirées than is healthy. The trick though is to go teetotal and guzzle down fruit juice: cranberry with a tear-drop of orange juice is the mocktail du jour!
My Deadline colleague, international editor Andreas Wiseman, revealed last week that Byrne is expected to star in the true-story Tow.
Bryne will portray Amanda Ogle, a homeless woman who slept in her 1991 Toyota Camry, who entered into a 369-day legal battle against a towing company that had impounded her car after it had been stolen.

"Star Wars," much like the superhero genre, thrives in animation. It is in this medium that the potential for storytelling of the galaxy far, far away truly becomes apparent. Whether it is the larger-than-life feats of power of Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" micro-series, the expansive worldbuilding and cinematic visuals of "The Clone Wars," or the explosion of varied visuals and stories bringing different cultures to the franchise in "Star Wars: Visions," animation can bring out the best in "Star Wars."
After helping create "The Clone Wars," "Rebels," and "Tales of the Jedi," Dave Filoni helped give us the first "Star Wars" series centered squarely on the faceless guys that fought alongside the Jedi (and eventually betrayed them) with the war thriller "The Bad Batch." Life in the wilderness––breathing in the mountain air, basking in the sun, and foraging for the perfect meal––can also be punishing and unforgiving. Particularly if you are a Sasquatch family. This simple premise is the foundation of David and Nathan Zellner’s most experimental gamble yet, Sasquatch Sunset, which captures a year in the Sasquatch way of life. Set in the vast expanse of Northern California––not far from where the infamous Patterson–Gimlin film was shot––we witness the circle of life for these creatures in all their birth, playfulness, territorial drive, fornication, and death. The result is almost exactly what one may expect from the logline––with perhaps a bit more bodily fluids and Sasquatch phalluses––and while it’s impressive that the Zellners stay steadfast in their conceit, one wishes the overall effect added up to something with a bit more impact.

A collective of feminist groups held street protests across France on Thursday evening to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s support of Gérard Depardieu in the light of multiple allegations of sexual assault against the actor.
The initiative – entitled “Keep your old world, we want one without sexist and sexual violence” – was centred in Paris but also saw smaller satellite protests in cities such as Toulouse, Marseille and Lyon.

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Something you often hear cinephiles proclaim is that “Every year is a good year in film.” Well, that’s obviously true––if one pays attention and knows where to look––but then there are also years that are simply better. To me, 2023 has turned out to be one of those.
It’s a year where the top festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Venice all overperformed with stellar lineups. Geographically speaking, American/UK cinema can be proud of its output while productions from the rest of the world, especially France, Japan, Latin America, didn’t disappoint either. It’s also a year where not only indie/arthouse films delivered, but (some) blockbusters dared to get smart too. Even the presumed Oscar contenders this season include legitimate masterpieces in the mix.

Earlier this month, a handful of lucky Bob Dylan fans in Europe stumbled upon a new release entitled 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 in record stores scattered across the continent. The 28-track collection consists of nothing but studio outtakes from the 1973 Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid soundtrack sessions, but it’s sent the Dylan collecting community into a frenzy. Bids are surging past the $500 mark for the few copies available on Ebay — and fans are combing the shelves of European stores in the hopes of finding one.

Bahnsen Knights, from the two person Argentinian development team Lcb Game Studio, is the third in a series of text-based games that the studio have dubbed Pixel Pulps. Following Mothmen 1966 and Varney Lake, the new entry takes on a grimy, 1980s post-apocalyptic aesthetic and sees you operating as an undercover agent who has infiltrated a cult in order to find evidence that could implicate them in the murder of your close friend.
Though Bahnsen Knights is primarily a story game—with a close resemblance to a Choose Your Own Adventure book—it doesn’t have a great story per se. There isn’t much momentum to its narrative or tension in the underlying mystery. Its best and most layered character—a dive bar owner with deep interests in mathematics and, ironically, the craft of writing interesting characters—is a bit of an anomaly. And while the writing has its moments,...

Its best and most layered character—a dive bar owner with deep interests in mathematics and, ironically, the craft of writing interesting characters—is a bit of an anomaly. And while the writing has its moments,...

Today on Monday morning commemorated Al Roker’s 45th year as a member of the NBC family, by offering up some sweet words for “the beating heart of this show” and cuing up a throwback video that involved… penguins?
Roker’s career with NBC began in 1978 at Wkyc in Cleveland, which at the time was an NBC owned-and-operated station. In late 1983, he was named the regular weeknight weathercaster at Wnbc-tv in New York, replacing 27-year veteran Dr. Frank Field. From 1990 to ’95, Roker filled in for Willard Scott on Today, and come early 1996, upon Scott’s announced retirement, Roker received the regular weekday weatherman slot.

Those who missed Luke Combs’ last tour will have another chance to see him onstage.
Weeks before ending his first world tour, Combs announced his upcoming Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour.
“We got an opportunity to do two shows in some U.S. markets on the World Tour, but when I found out we were going to be able to do two shows for most all of the cities on the 2024 tour, I decided I wanted each show to have their own unique set up of openers, as well as my own unique setlist,” Combs said in a statement. “I thought this would give people an opportunity to come to both nights if they want, but see two completely different shows.”
“With country music being such a wide genre and being a huge fan of it all myself, I wanted to open up my stage to acts that lean into Outlaw,...

The Weekend Update desk pieces have felt a little stale lately, so it’s great to see Chloe Fineman stepping up to bring a little energy to hers. And it doesn’t hurt that her impersonation gets a lift from the actual person she’s impersonating — Julia Stiles.
The segment doesn’t start like the usual Update segment: Fineman doesn’t sit next to either Colin Jost or Michael Che. Instead, she’s in front of the desk wearing an alluring Santa-themed nightgown. “The sexiest gift you can give your partner is trying something new in the bedroom,” she says.
