Good production, bad story. GERMAN VIEWER
gameartde9 July 2021
So first of all. ,Wir sind die Welle' is not really to compare with the movie ,Die Welle'. This series is about making difference and to fight against everything wrong in this world.

I personally, as a german citizen, am not a fan of the german movie industry. But after I saw ,Dark' on Netflix, everything changed. Because of ,Dark's good quality in production, I gave this series a try. And I must say, I'm impressed. The production quality on this thing... unbelievable. 4K, good scenery, great lightning, good actors and I did not cringe while watching. This is extremely good for german quality. The music/sounds were very well picked as well.

Well why did I give this series only 5/10? It's because of the story. First of all: I really hoped to see a series that extends the movie, which is not the case. The story in the series is just bad, really bad. The idea behind it is good, but the implementation is just bad. So clumpy and not logical sometimes. I really can't describe it. It was just bad, and thats very unfortunate, because the production team did so good.

This leads me to another point: Because of the bad story, this series did not get any fame and no viewers at all. This is also bad, because I'm 100% certain that there will be no second season. And I think many viewers will see this as a waste of time, because season one has an open ending (which makes sense because the director wanted to force a second season).

I think it was a nice experiment, very impressed with the protagonist as an actor, he did very well and the production on this is insane, but the story is not to be spoken about. I personally liked watching the series and I would watch the second season as well I think, if there were going to be one.

Highlights the consequences of oversimplification
paulm_833 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The show begins on the premise of children being upset over the general current state of affairs and wanting to take gradually more extreme measures to "do something". The challenge, of course, is that most issues aren't as black-and-white as they would like to believe:

1. The rich daughter who suddenly decides she needs to find purpose from the comfort of her multi-million euro home while sipping smoothies determines that, within a few pages of reading an actual book, brands and logos are the root of all evil - this leads to an awkward situation in which she challenges her father about his continued purchase of designer goods, to which he replies that he prefers to purchase higher quality goods that last longer and that the real problem starts earlier on in the supply chain (textile factories in Bangladesh). Armed with this bit of knowledge, said daughter does, unsurprisingly, exactly nothing. Indeed, you will not hear the words "supply chain" mentioned even once in this series - maybe they need to finish high school first.

2. The aggrieved farmer's son that blames a factory owner for poisoning his parents fields, wishes to correct this injustice by throwing a paintball at the owner. One of the other children points out that this is pointless and will accomplish nothing apart from incurring an additional dry cleaning bill, and that "something else" must be done. This "something else" turns out to be putting production run-off in to the owner's SUV (all evildoers drive SUVs in this show), which ultimately gets on his suit when the door is opened. Totally different than the paintbaill scenario in every way.

3. Argumentation that a slaughterhouse is not adhering to regulations suggests that there is room for reasonable action to correct this situation by gathering actual evidence and submitting this to regulators, but instead leads to mass vandalism, the death of the animals they aimed to protect, and the ultimate destruction of jobs for all the workers. Mission accomplished. In the end, the owners, who the kids have the grievance with, has in no way been dissuaded from changing their business practices, and will now simply have the insurance money to start up elsewhere. Kids 1, critical thinking 0.

4. After that, it's having an issue with SUVs - nothing specific like emissions, fuel consumption, weight impact on small village roads, or anything concrete, just SUVs in general. In this case, the target of the chidlren's ire is a small business owner who again, is so far removed from the market development and product positioning strategy of large automotive OEMs that one wonders whether it's really possible for anyone to be this naive (it turns out that the answer is yes, it is). One of the former vandals even brings this point up with the instigator, asking what they think they're accomplishing, or what the small business owner has done wrong, but this is again met with silence. Local business damaged and possible jobs lost - another victory for the muppet brigade.

5. Continuing on the cliche bandwagon, it was only a matter of time before an arms manufacturer would be introduced and targeted. In this case, besides a personal vendetta of the hooligan-in-chief, issues with the arms manufacturer tend to primarily evolve around making sales to countries that the children find objectionable, but which are otherwise supported by the foreign policy of their country.

Fortunately it ends on a high note - the organizers are arrested and carted away, while the rest of the kids go back to their social media channels, and no negative consequences seem to have befallen the factory, which will presumably open up for business as usual on Monday.

In short, if you want to watch a bunch of kids fail to grasp the intricacies of the issues they've just suddenly identified and spend half the series either spraypainting something or removing spraypaint from something, this is the show for you.

That being said, I'm looking forward to the second series - there's so many more industries they can complain about and fail to do anything about, this could go on for several seasons. They didn't even get to climate change or the big bad energy company (the executive of which will be in an SUV, of course), so there's definitely exciting material to come.

It's not at all bad.
durham1003 November 2019
It has it faults, the down on his luck copper is a bit stereotypical but on the whole this is a pretty good series that has humour - which is always a plus - very likeable characters and a decent premise. Overall I would call it Fight Club for the - almost 2020's - which is a positive and I very much look forward to the next series.

7/10 not all bad but not good
malumity9 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The plastic episode said a lot of dumb things like "stop using plastic omg", like the problem are in the people who buy not the industry that make us buy it, the episode on the slanders was not as bad as could be, and the last episode the "leftist one" saying things like "im doing this for my mother", like bro your mother unfortunately is not the only one who died, you should be doing this because it's wrong not only because you're mad and mourning! And Lea at the end doing the most naive thing in the world pretending that protest would change something for the world and for the market of guns and war, wish the world was like that, not gonna lie.

But the idea was not all bad, can make people want to study more about the impacts of capitalism.

Do not watch to the end, does NOT get better
patrickjbailey-8351012 November 2019
About halfway through the first episode, I was so overcome with how corny this show is that I checked IMDB to see if it gets any better. Sure enough, first review I see says to stick with it to the end, it gets better and is worth it.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Even if you like the politics of this show, it is so corny and on the nose it is unbearable. There is no subtly, no nuance, just absolutely cheesy politics throughout. I thought at one point they may introduce some nuance (hey these are real people and businesses we're hurting), but no, they run right back to the cornball politics.

I hope that it is better if you are a native German speaker, but i really regret wasting my time on this. I've enjoyed other German series in the past so I don't think that is it.

Too naive
trhowever12 December 2019
I really if there's any logics behind this series.. everyone can change from one character to another just if the directors want it to be, and they don't have their principle, at all. And the whole storyline had so many bugs. I mean, don't the filmmakers of this series somehow live in the real world? Even a bit?

Pretty good capture of how it feels to be 17 and wanting to change things!

Of all the main actors, only Hagen and Leas mother have not previously been present in Tatort...

Bad Storytelling, flat characters
mablingo29 November 2019
Wow, this one was really bad. Gave it a try for 5 episodes. But the storytelling is not convincing at all. The protagonists are like a stereotypes-best-of. Which actually is a worst-of. There is this cool antifa-like-dude who instantly connects to the poshed girl, who changes her whole mind/life from one second to another. Then there is this farmer boy, who stands for hard working people and tradition that is eaten up by global capitalism. And there is also a turkish-german kind of guy so you can deal with racism-topics etc. Completed is the group with an emo-girl to catch those insecure teenage watchers i guess.

I think this series wants too much with too less effort. The character development of the protagonists happens so fast that you cant really call it a development. Its like "its off...oh no, now its on". The dynamics within the group is just as badly played out. Another thing to mention is that these critical things, that are presented about the world today are dealt with very superficial. One topic comes up and in the next episode its gone in favor for another one. Okay, you could say it has to be, since it shows the still naive way of the teens looking at these things. But i dont know if that was the Intention of the director. And if it was, this is not crafted convincing either.

Overall it seems as if the director had been in a rush to put out a stylish series that deals with current topics with relatable characters for every misunderstood teen. Therefore it now lacks story and more than one-dimensional characters.

Really not recommended! And really sorry for Peter Thorwarth. Youve done so much better work!!

Actually, this is NOT a "left extremism" version of "Die Welle"...
ChrisMovieAddict4 November 2019
...and you'll have to watch all 6 episodes to get it. (S1) You should not compare it to "Die Welle" or any other movies following a similar theme (the experiment with totalitarianism), because that is simply not the point (until now, at least).

This is a well scripted and well paced story about youth anger, and what will happen if you push it too far.. The main characters are quite believable (I'm from germany, like the series, and these kids could be real for sure - your mileage may vary). The appearance of a far right german party (they only changed the name) mirrors actual political events, and is a trigger, but the story is not reduced to "far left against far right".

The cast is very good, especially the leads. They put only 6 episodes into season 1, which makes the story quite compact, and also managed to put in quite a lot of development of the main characters, which is very pleasing.

I'd be very happy to watch another season.

Good issues, terrible script...
figachealluce3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was a little bit in hype for this series but after two episodes I've realised how lazy the script was. First of all there are so many referencies to other show (Stranger Things for the main theme, Money Heist for the off screen narration from the co-protagonist girl and all the cliché from ALL the american teen drama that we've already seen a thousand times) that'll make you feel sick. The second and the most important problem is the script: the sudden evolution of the characters, the illogical and no sense behaviours, screenplay holes (better say pit) and in general ridiculous staging. It seems they do what they do not for a real sake consourning political and social problems but only because they just wanna have fun, acting like posers only because they've read a book or a relevant article (and since yesterday they were totally different person); in fact all behaviours, as I said, are SO extreme, false and unnatural! It's all black or white without shades of gray in the middle. Other problems concern the holes script. Basically the way they plan all the assaults is completely omitted so they just... Go. Without worrying about consequences and in fact there are so many times in which they could've been catched and arrested with a thousand evidences of the crime but almost every time they escape and gain freedom. All of these problems make you react with so many facepalms that you will stop watching immediately but I have to say that in the end has his positive points. Rather than beeing boring, has a marked rythm! Every episodes is full of developments! Also, it catches you in the mood of the story and you start moving with confidence with the characters and the narrative world in a certain point because you want to know how it ends, and for me that's the main point of a tv series so in a way the goal is achieved. In conclusion, I don't know if reccomend you this. It has only 6 episodes so if it's a rainy day and you are bored, that's the one for you! In any case, choose yourself if you wanna give a positive or a negative meaning about all I've written.

bad actors + miserable writting = not worth my time
ariedner20 November 2019
Taking current german society issues as story guideline based on the successful german classic "the wave" may be a good but easy idea to set up a potential show. mixing it with the style and words of today's youth may also be a understandable and reliable ingredient. Nevertheless, this show just fails completely, as the makers obviously and only relied on the things mentioned above and totally ignored good acting or writing. the story jumps from one logical flaw to the other, from one stupid scene to the next. the topics may be relevant and potentially profound, the storyline still remains a big and meaningless disappointment.

Guys, watch it till the end. It is worth it.
lukaxkl5 November 2019
Yep, the first 2 episodes are quitre mediocre, especially if you're not into typical teen dramas, as they mostly serve building up characters, but the series quickly picks up pace. It is in episode 3 when the show truly finds its way, and episodes 4-6 are just really, really good in showing the naivity of teen rebellion.

Keep in mind, however, that this show is NOT similar to the movie from 2008 or the book. It is just loosely based, and tells much more about naive idealism than about left-wing extremism. In fact, I'd say the show is more critical of the far-right than left wing.

Give this series another chance, because it truly does pick up and deserves a season 2.

Weak storyline based on stereotypes
nicowimmer12 December 2019
Not every series needs to have a moral message - But when your story is about Nazis and politics, you rather have a smart message to tell. Instead, this series is based on stereotypes with further potential to split society. Today, we have got a lot of different opinions - on the left and on the right side. But not once, the main characters are looking for a political discussion. Instead, they solve their problems violently and it is shown how awesome it is to solve political problems illegally...Just terrible!

Unfortunately not good
mehdilali-272335 November 2019
I really like the new generation of German series but this one is unfortunately very boring and is made to easy for an interesting and very current theme. The Charakters are all stereotypes and are playing very inflated. They copied the melody from stranger things and used the same chat-windows like How to sell drugs fast. The storytelling is a nightmare - seems that they didn't put so much effort in it. A great example for bad qualitative work :/

Unique and powerful
Sayuraisani2 November 2019
I do not agree with the person who stated that this is a kids show with kids acting in it. First of all, I wouldn't call 17 year olds kids. And, second of all.. the statement that they are acting like they are wise beyond there years and that was unbelievable for persons there age is ridiculous. When I was 15 I stayed in squats and participated in protests and anarchist behaviour. I grew up very quick, and was a lot different to people my age. Everyone I met was older than me, and they thought I was wise beyond my years. So this show is not unbelievable or ridiculous. I thought it was an amazing portrayal of open minded and conscious teenagers.. however I still see some childish tendencies within them. But then again, at any age anyone can be childish.. I've met some adults who have acted a whole lot more childish than these characters. Overall I really enjoy this show, and would definitely recommend people to give it a watch! AND BTW. I wouldn't recommend kids to watch this show anyway. It's not exactly PG haha..

Bad writing, decent acting.
riefenstein0017 November 2019
Completly misses the point of the orignal story, which showed how easy normal people can be manipulated into fanatic ideas. Instead they show us stupid good-evil cliche writing. I suggest to watch the American movie with Bruce Davison.

Watching it for the second time now...
Yooseid5 November 2019
...because after I watched it through I realized how much I liked this series. But the other reviewers are right - you have to watch the whole thing.

All in all, it really kind of captures the situation we have right now (especially in Germany) and shows the way a lot young people feel about it. I can identify a lot with the protagonists and even in the second run their acting convinces me.

This show is definitely worth a second season, I'm really excited for how the characters develop. Hopefully the story stays as interesting and unpredictable as it is.

I really like the trend toward german series like this and "how to sell drugs online (fast)", hopefully it continues!

For Children... By Children?
genious-354131 November 2019
I get that most of what is produced these days needs to star young, attractive people because the target audience for everything is millennials... which is fine. I'm not THAT old that I'm already regularly griping about 'the kids' all the time. But far too many of these shows that are being churned out, almost as frequently as comic book movies/TV shows, SOUND like they are written by kids - but they put so much effort into trying to make the characters sound mature, wise beyond their years and so incredibly insightful and profound... You will watch this and find yourself thinking 'I think I've already seen this'. And in a way, you have. It had different kids starrign in it, the name is different and the plot is somewhat different... but you've seen it. It's filled with the same old cliches and resorts to the same old tired routines.

Amazing series. The score reflects right wingers who are upset at the shows left wing bias.
albzfinest2 November 2019
The acting, the plot, the smart dialogue and camerawork are phenomenal. The story takes some unexpected turns, and all throughout I thought my god this is how all thrillers should be. Please do yourself a favor and watch this show, it's only 6 episodes and worth every minute of your time.

One stereotype after another
andyg1012904 November 2019
This might be one of the worst series ever. There are only, and I mean exactly only stereotype characters. Like in a trash horror movie. The events in this series are nowhere near to be real. This is so unrealistic and over the top The movie is awesome, the series is as worse as it gets. Spare your time and watch the and not this steotyping unrealistic waste of time.

rebeccarcs8 November 2019
Only two episodes in. I was engaged right away. Well-written and well-acted BUT The score..... dumbs down and cheapens all of the above. Thought at first it might be a fluke bad choice, that I could overlook.. but the musical strikes continue to amass and it's bugging me soooooo much.

I VERY much enjoy everything which comes between the auditory insults

Nothing special and real slow
brucekirkland-2987930 November 2019
Also basically a European teen show. The pulled off the English dubbing quite well. It does not resonate with me. Could be the age and/or the culture not sure. Found it preaching, unrealistic, boring. Good idea though the execution sucked

trancescu13 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In the first episode, Lea can't get a bottle of water on the stage because she is stooped by the politician's guards, but when the politician gets dizzy, somehow all the guards are letting him go down the stage, alone, wondering through some hallways, just to get captured.

This movie is full of this kind of situations that are so edgy and so cringy that it makes you scratch your face.

It's like a kid wrote this movie

reallyhuh7 December 2019
Yes the show has its stereotypes however it is very entertaining and thought provoking. I must admit I don't know much about current German politics but it seems quite empowering, even if you don't agree with their beliefs the show is about young people standing up for what they believe in.
