Will CBS decide to focus more on reality shows moving forward? Stay tuned!

The NCIS-verse is down one show at CBS, following NCIS: Hawai’i‘s cancellation at the network on Friday.
Several of the procedural’s cast members have mourned the axing on social media, including Tori Anderson (aka FBI agent Kate Whistler), who lamented: “Having a really hard time processing this one. Thank you to our incredible crew who made every single day feel like I was living a dream. I want to say thank you to all the fans. My heart breaks for you as well.

In a shock announcement on Friday, CBS announced it was canceling NCIS: Hawaii after three seasons. This is the first in the franchise with a female lead, Vanessa Lachey. In addition, in Season 3, they added LL Cool J to reprise his role as Sam Hanna. He has introduced the NCIS: Elite. Now, it seems that this storyline will be done.
This shocking announcement is just one week from when the network was to announce its Fall 2024 schedule. That will be on May 2. Here are all the details about the cancelation, and how fans nearly got a shortened Season 4.

Another NCIS spinoff is coming to an end. CBS has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The two-part series finale will air on April 29 and May 6. And given what series star Alex Tarrant (who plays Kai) previously told TV Insider, it sounds like fans are going to be left hanging. “There is definitely a special twist that comes in towards the end. It was a shock to me when I was reading the scripts, that’s for sure,” he said, adding that the finale “most definitely … ends on a cliffhanger.” NCIS: Hawai’i was the last current CBS show whose fate had yet to be decided. The network has renewed Tracker, The Neighborhood, NCIS, FBI (for three seasons), FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, Ghosts, Fire Country, NCIS: Sydney, S.W.A.T. (after it was previously supposed to be ending with the current seventh season), Elsbeth, and The Equalizer for the 2024-2025 season.

It came down to the wire, but NCIS: Hawai’i ultimately didn’t make the cut for next season at CBS. The news comes days before the network is set to announce its fall schedule on May 2 and before the Season 3 finale of Hawai’i is scheduled to air on May 6. According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
The cancellation is not a complete shocker since, as Deadline has been reporting, NCIS: Hawai’i was on the bubble. Still, the outcome is surprising since an effort was made to extend the well performing drama’s run for at least an abbreviated fourth and final season, with producers agreeing to a massive budget cut and open to other concessions in order to keep the show going.

The Equalizer has drawn very good ratings for CBS. Still, it's also co-produced by an outside studio (Universal Television), which is a negative in the economics of network television these days. Before I ever saw William Friedkin's classic horror film "The Exorcist," my mother gleefully shared with me all of the horrific urban legends and unexplained mysteries that surrounded the film's production. She believed, as do countless others, that "The Exorcist" was one of many cursed films. The face of a possessed Regan MacNeil was terrifying, to be sure, but movie magic meant to scare me couldn't hold a candle to the inexplicable dread that had me convinced filmmakers daring to tell this story made them a target for actual evil. While I'm old enough now to know better than to believe in cursed films, it's still a fascinating rabbit hole to fall into. Hell, the horror movie streaming app Shudder even has a two-season documentary series called, you guessed it, "Cursed Films" discussing cinema's most controversial and conspiracy-surrounded film sets. Now, a new narrative horror film is dabbling in the world of cursed films,...

Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.
“’The Equalizer,’ led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”

CBS has picked up a fifth season of drama The Equalizer, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, for 2024-25.
As Deadline reported last week, the renewal was fully expected, with the delay related to lead studio Universal Television negotiating a deal with Queen Latifah. It recently closed, paving the way to a renewal.
So far, The Equalizer‘s seasons had been capped at 18 episodes, which is something top talent often request when signing on for a broadcast drama series. There was an effort in the Queen Latifah negotiation to increase the number to 20 or more but I hear Season 5 will again consist of 18 episodes.
After Elsbeth renewed and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas canceled last week, NCIS: Hawai’i remains the only CBS scripted series in limbo.

As Deadline reported last week, Hawai’i’s future is said to be the subject of tough business conversations, with a partial Season 4 of 13 or fewer episodes still a possibility. It could be a final chapter for the show, the first installment in the NCIS franchise with a female lead.
The Equalizer has been a strong performer for CBS, currently ranking as the #8 most watched among all non-sports broadcast programs, averaging 7.89M linear viewers (in Nielsen most current data) and over 10 million viewers in Live+35 multi-platform viewership. It also is the #1 entertainment program among African Americans.

Co-produced by CBS Studios, The Equalizer is one of four drama series Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, makes for CBS, along with the three FBIs, all of which were also recently renewed, the flagship for three seasons.
A reimagining of the classic series, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.
Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes also star. Andrew Marlowe, Terri Edda Miller, co-showrunners Joseph C. Denzel Washington is one of the most respected and prolific actors in Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner is often considered to be one of the greatest actors of the generation. He has worked with acclaimed directors such as Spike Lee, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Antoine Fuqua, and more. He won the Oscar for the films Glory and Training Day.
While Washington established himself as a dramatic actor, the Malcolm X star also broke boundaries and stereotypes as a bankable action star. He featured in films such as The Equalizer franchise and Inside Man. One of Washington’s most memorable performances was when he starred in Tony Scott’s action cult classic Man on Fire.

Deemed one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, Denzel Washington exudes a classic movie star aura. Renowned for his enduring charm and the seamless blend of irony and sincerity in his iconic roles, Washington embodies the timeless essence of a Hollywood legend. He is also known for avoiding the franchise films, with the notable exception of The Equalizer trilogy.
A still from The Equalizer trilogy | Sony Pictures
He has also been commended for the same by being named the second-highest-grossing actor to not star in a franchise, following the Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Washington did not seem to mind the ranking, as he responded with a touch of wit.
Denzel Washington Has no Issues Losing to Leonardo DiCaprio
In a conversation with ScreenRant, Denzel Washington expressed his disinterest in sequels and potential franchise films, as he highlighted his approach of focusing on each film individually rather than considering potential sequels.

Leonardo DiCaprio used to edge out Oscar-winner Denzel Washington in this one unique and understated category. And it was a category not even Washington knew he was a part of.
How Denzel Washington reacted to being #2 behind Leonardo DiCaprio in this category Denzel Washington | Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images
DiCaprio and Washington have a few things in common beyond being praised for their craft. At one point, both actors were known for doing standalone films without doing too many sequels or franchises. They were also the two richest actors to have done so, with Washington right behind DiCaprio. When Screen Rant mentioned this to Washington himself, however, he seemed unimpressed by the stats.
“Okay, good for me,” Washington responded regarding the tidbit.
When it came to franchise films, Washington didn’t seem to make the conscious decision to avoid them. But being a part of a franchise was just not something he prioritized.

Based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, "The Equalizer" trilogy sees Denzel Washington playing a killing machine. Washington is Robert McCall, a former Marine and ex-Defense Intelligence Agency agent who would really like to be left alone. Unfortunately, scumbags and other villains frequently cross his path, which means McCall is often getting back into action and killing a lot of people.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the "Equalizer" trilogy is ultra-violent and action-packed. It's also surprisingly solid. These aren't great movies, but like Robert McCall, they get the job done in swift, brutal fashion. "The Equalizer 3" feels like an ending of sorts for Robert McCall, which makes for a sturdy trilogy. But how does the trilogy stack up as a whole? Which is the best entry? Which is the worst?
Let's find out by ranking "The Equalizer" movies!

After renewing 11 scripted shows for 2024-25, CBS has made its first cancellations of the spring.
The network says second-year dramedy So Help Me Todd and drama CSI: Vegas, which is in its third season, won’t return. The two shows were among just a handful of CBS scripted series whose futures were up in the air as of Friday.
CSI: Vegas is averaging about 6.4 million viewers per episode in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings, and So Help Me Todd draws about 6.3 million. They’re likely to be the two most watched shows to get the ax this season (not including the pre-announced end for Young Sheldon), but the bar is a bit higher at CBS — which has 12 of the top 15 scripted series since mid-February, when broadcasters rolled out their post-strike lineups — than elsewhere.
The network also has three new dramas on deck for the 2024-25 season in NCIS: Origins, which...

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.
In most current linear Nielsen viewership (2/12 to date), CSI: Vegas, which improved its time period, is at #21 among all non-sports broadcast programs with 6.234M viewers and So Help Me Todd at #22 with 6.224M. That is more...

Something tells us that the NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 finale—a two-parter, airing on April 29 and May 6—is definitely going to leave us wanting more. CBS has shared descriptions of both episodes, and this comes as its future is still up in the air. First in “Spill the Tea” on April 29, after a high-value bioweapons expert is murdered in a secure facility on Hawai’i, NCIS and the NCIS Elite team join forces to track down the killer and discover an even deadlier threat. The NCIS Elite team is what has really brought Sam Hanna (LA‘s LL Cool J) to the island, as was (finally) revealed in the fifth episode of the season after Jane (Vanessa Lachey) and Ernie (Jason Antoon) did some digging when he was being secretive. Then in “Divided We Conquer” ...

Fourth in a series on broadcast network series renewals. Fox is looking forward to the 2024-25 season after a strike-disrupted 2023-24 lineup which featured only three live-action scripted series, returning dramas The Cleaning Lady and Alert and comedy Animal Control, with the network’s top drama series, 9-1-1: Lone Star Mia.
The 12-episode fifth season of Lone Star will be used to launch Fox’s two new drama series, delayed to next season by the strikes, Rescue Hi-Surf and Doc. The network is so high on the former, it just ordered seven more episodes, bringing the lifeguard drama’s freshman season to 19 episodes.
