Willem Dafoe has made more than 150 movies, but in a forced break from filming he leaned into a new role. He talks about art, his new film Poor Things – and gentleman farming
Willem Dafoe is in his apartment in New York, where he is watched over by two works of art. Behind him is an oil painting of his father, a prop created for a film, which required “dynastic portraits” of his relatives. “I liked my father fine, so, there he is.” We are talking on Zoom and he spins the camera round. “But look, even better! Here’s the counterpoint. Do you see that?” To the side of him is a large, lightbox photograph of his friend and occasional collaborator, the artist Marina Abramović, standing priest-like over a naked body adorned with organs. “Anyway, you get the idea,” he says.

“Snowfall” star Damson Idris will appear opposite Brad Pitt in a new Formula One racing film from “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski. The untitled movie is being made by Apple Original Films and will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
Kosinski will produce the feature alongside seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton under his Dawn Apollo Films banner, and Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Ehren Kruger, who did similar honors on “Top Gun: Maverick,” is writing the screenplay.
The racing feature stars Pitt as a former driver who returns to the sport. Idris will play his teammate. Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale will star in the Catherine Hardwicke-helmed family drama Prisoner’s Daughter, penned by Mark Bacci.
“Mark Bacci’s script is a raw, personal look at a deeply fractured family, similar to my first film Thirteen (with Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter.) With Prisoner’s Daughter, I want to fully immerse the viewer in Kate’s character’s intense world as she, her father, and her young son try to heal generational family trauma and find a new way forward,” said Hardwicke.
The film tells the story of a tough but proud ex-con who’s struggling to find a way to reconnect with his only daughter and grandson; once he begins an attempt at reconciliation, his violent past once again catches up to him.

Bengaluru, Feb 8 (Ians) Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar on Monday said that India needs to adopt organic farming to keep 'poison' out of its plates.
Inaugurating the annual five-day National Horticulture Fair 2021 organised by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (Iihr), Bengaluru, Ravishankar Guruji said that the country must gradually adopt organic farming for its sustainable growth.
"We are consuming poisonous food due to extensive usage of pesticides. The present farming system has to be changed by encouraging organic farming," he asserted.
He also emphasised upon changing the food culture and promoting indigenous food to develop the immune system.
The five-day fair at Iihr is organised in hybrid mode with physical and virtual participation. The institute has displayed 300 high yielding horticulture crops and demonstrated 254 varieties of disease-resistant high-density fruits, vegetables and flowers. Also on display are vegetable and fruit vending vans, tricycle and a high humidity storage box.

Kate Beckinsale has one of the more eclectic filmographies around. She did her proper British period pieces and indie films early on. She then transitioned to rom-coms for a bit. After that was her “Underworld” era where she paraded around in black leather and killed werewolves. And now, she’s in gritty dramas such as 2018’s “Farming.” Needless to say, over the years, she’s crossed paths with all sorts of filmmakers, including the one and only Michael Bay, who directed her in the film “Pearl Harbor.”
And in a new interview with Vulture, Beckinsale discussed her film “Serendipity” in detail, but also shared a funny anecdote about her preparation for “Pearl Harbor” and why she thought the action epic was actually a “period piece” about the horrors of the WWII event.

One of the more intriguing titles of this year’s Berlin Film Festival is the new Johnny Depp true life drama, Minamata in which Depp plays the famous Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith who in 1971 undertook the most challenging and important subject of his career in travelling to the small Japanese village of Minamata which had been ravaged by an outbreak of Mercury Poisoning due to gross negligence by Japan’s Chisso Corporation, the government itself, and even the Yakuza. The important and heartbreaking movie, which I caught at CAA in Los Angeles a few days ago, documents Smith’s efforts to chronicle the tragic effects of the disease and the Minamata inhabitants’ heroic efforts to fight back. As the film shows, Smith was an enormously gifted, if difficult personality, and had to practically beg a reluctant Life to give him this opportunity, but the results were eye-opening and...

It’s only been three years (and change) since DC’s Suicide Squad movie arrived in theaters, and already, Warner Bros. is plotting a hard reset with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn at the helm.
The Powers That Be made the swoop soon after Gunn was fired by Disney – only to be reinstated at the helm of Guardians 3, which he’ll begin developing once The Suicide Squad has seen the warm light of day. It’ll feature an entirely new version of Task Force X, though there’s still room in Gunn’s ranks for Harley Quinn (Birds of Prey‘s Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) and Captain Boomerang, the latter of whom will be played once again by Jai Courtney.
One cast member who won’t be returning though is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who portrayed Killer Croc in the 2016 spinoff. As a matter of fact,...

Further new openers include Lionsgate’s ‘Farming’, eOne’s ‘The Day Shall Come’.
Two contrasting titles are among the new openers at the UK box office this weekend, as Universal’s animated comedy Abominable goes up against Paramount’s Will Smith action drama Gemini Man.
However the new openers will have to score strongly to knock Warner Bros’ Joker from top spot, which scored a huge £12.6m debut last weekend.
Abominable is a DreamWorks Animation production, about a magical Yeti in Shanghai on a quest to reunite with his family on Mount Everest. Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai and Tenzing Norgay Trainor lead the voice cast.

Nigerian actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was ‘farmed out’ to foster parents in 1970s Essex to improve his prospects. It did not go well, as he shows in his directing debut, Farming
There are some stories that, though they wait half a lifetime, must get told. Seven years ago, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje gave an interview to this paper in which he talked about his autobiographical film, Farming, which was then about to go into production after a dramatised reading of the script had headlined a Sundance festival promotion in London. At the time the actor was enjoying a measure of Hollywood fame for his role in the cult TV series Lost. Farming, which he had then already been writing and developing for nearly a decade, explored a real-life mystery: it was the incredible story of how he, a young Nigerian boy raised by white foster parents in 1970s Tilbury, Essex, had forged an...

Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for British-Nigerian actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s feature directorial debut, “Farming,” a fascinating true story about a young black boy’s search for love and belonging within a savage skinhead subculture. Based on Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s own unbelievable story as a troubled youth in London, the title “Farming” refers to the practice of giving children over to informal fostering, which many Nigerian parents did in 1960s and 1970s Britain.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s parents, at the time students in 1967 London, gave him to a white working-class couple in Tilbury, which was then a fiercely insular, majority white dockside community. He was in constant danger of physical attack from local kids who, encouraged by their parents, nurtured a violent fear of black people.

"You ain't like them... You're better." Lionsgate UK has unveiled an official UK trailer for the indie drama Farming, which is the feature directorial debut of English actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. You will recognize Adewale as Killer Croc from Suicide Squad, or Algrim from Thor, or Heavy Duty from G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, or Mr. Eko from "Lost" - now he's telling his own true story. Based on Adewale's childhood, Farming is about a young Nigerian boy who "farmed out" by his parents to a white British family in hopes of a better future. Instead, he becomes the feared leader of a white skinhead gang in 1980's England. The cast includes Damson Idris, Kate Beckinsale, John Dagleish, Jaime Winstone, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Genevieve Nnaji, as well as Adewale. Damn - this looks very powerful and brutally honest. Worth a watch. Here's the first official UK trailer for Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Farming,...

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s movie has won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film; other winners include Aurora and Sakawa. A jury comprising Antonia Campbell-Hughes, David Hayman and Philip John has judged Farming, the first film by actor-turned-director Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, as the winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (19-30 June). Culturally adrenalising. Visceral. Inspirational.” Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have received this prestigious award, named after one of my cinematic.

While the presence of “Minding the Gap” and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening” in the Oscar documentary feature category suggest a welcome evolution in the way the Academy thinks about nonfiction filmmaking, the documentary short ballot hasn’t changed much from years past. Once again, just causes, rather than great cinema, dominate the list of nominees, which serve as a kind of armchair activism for voters, who tend to back the issue that matters most to them. Here, the choices range from empowering women in developing nations to easing terminal patients with end-of-life choices.

What if the black protagonist of Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” was not a cop infiltrating a racist institution in order to bring it down, but a true believer finding a violent outlet for a psychological Molotov cocktail of internalized racism and pathological self-loathing? This is, roughly speaking, the extraordinary premise of British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s directorial debut “Farming,” which is based with queasy authenticity on his own experiences as a teenage member of a 1980s white skinhead gang in Tilbury, Essex.
Unremittingly, bludgeoningly bleak in its portrayal of his own degradation and humiliation, and displaying only a passing interest in his eventual rehabilitation, the film is remarkable for its lack of self-pity, but it makes the experience of “Farming” a merciless one for the audience too. The process by which a young boy can be turned inside-out against his own skin is scary; scarier still is the sense that deprogramming this mindset,...

While there are many reasons for an artist to strike out with their feature directorial debut, Farming’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje had one that was extremely personal and expressly his own. “The genesis was literally trying to sleep at night,” the actor-turned-director told Deadline in Toronto, where his film premiered. “I couldn’t sleep without writing 10 to 20 pages, and by the end of two weeks, I had a 500-page manuscript.”
Produced by Michael London, the film’s title is deceiving. It refers not to any kind of agricultural work, but rather, to a little-known 1960s social experiment, which saw Nigerian children ‘farmed out’ by their parents to white British families, in hopes of providing them with better lives. Well-intentioned as the act may have been in some cases, it inevitably sent many Nigerian youths down a path of destruction and self-loathing, creating a feeling of existing everywhere and nowhere all at once,...

Becoming a series-regular on a show as storied as Lost is a lofty achievement for any actor. But for Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, the path that brought him there—and to films like Suicide Squad and Thor: The Dark World—could not have been rockier or more challenging. It’s a journey Akinnuoye-Agbaje relates in his directorial debut Farming, which premiered in Toronto this weekend.
As a young boy, Akinnuoye-Agbaje was fostered by his Nigerian parents into a white working-class family in Tilbury, Essex—a common practice known as ‘farming’. Dislocated from his foster mother (played in the film by Kate Beckinsale), and completely cut off from the culture of his birth parents (they brought him to Nigeria when he was 8 and eventually returned him to the UK when he struggled to fit in), he was forced to endure the extreme racism of Britain in the 1970s and ’80s.

History had a strange way of catching up with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who wrote the autobiographical story that would eventually become the screenplay for his directorial debut, “Farming,” 16 years ago.
The improbable coming-of-age story of a British-Nigerian child who is fostered by a white working-class family and journeys from self-destruction to redemption will have its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. “Farming” arrives as a growing push for greater onscreen representation of women and people of color ripples across film industries worldwide.
“The film happened when it was actually meant to in society,” said Akinnuoye-Agbaje. “Now we’re in a time when diverse voices have a platform. I think the film has been made at the right time…for a voice of this nature to be heard.”

Kenyan filmmaker Ng’endo Mukii recently lamented what she observed as a shocking scarcity of contemporary African films in top film festival lineups, but the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival is a happy exception. This year, Tiff maintains its history of ensuring that African cinema is well represented among its selections with as many as 15 feature films representing the continent, compared to about six that tell specifically African-American stories. Ahead of Tiff’s September 6 kickoff, here are eight highlights that center on black lives.
“Sew the Winter to My Skin” (South Africa)
South African filmmaker Jahmil X.T. Qubeka returns with his third feature, which was also a 2017 Cannes L’Atelier selection. The film is inspired by the life and times of John Kepe, a Robin Hood-esque rebel who lived in a mountain cave while stealing from colonist white farmers to give to the indigenous poor, eluding capture for years...

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for “Lionheart,” the directorial debut of actress Genevieve Nnaji, which plays in the Discovery section of Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Paris-based Mpm Premium has picked up the Nigerian film for international sales.
Set in Southeast Nigeria, “Lionheart” tells the story of a young woman, Adaeze Obiagu (Nnaji), who becomes saddled with the responsibility of running her sick father’s business under the suffocating supervision of an intensely crude and eccentric uncle. “Her competing business instincts and family obligations become a catalyst for drastic change not everyone is ready to embrace,” according to the synopsis.
Nnaji said in a statement: “’Lionheart’ is the beginning of a journey to explore and express my creative interpretation of story-telling, particularly African stories. Africa is a possessor of the most compelling stories as yet untold, and we are determined to tell our stories, our way, through our voices,...

35 features with UK involvement are playing across the two festivals.
Four months ago, the UK was reacting to the disappointment of just four films with UK involvement in the Cannes Film Festival programme, including no outright UK films in the Competition, Un Certain Regard, Critics’ Week, and Directors’ Fortnight strands.
Several execs reiterated to Screen at the time that Cannes remains the premiere destination of choice, but suggested the autumn festivals such as Venice and Toronto were beginning to offer an increased appeal to UK filmmakers with their closer proximity to distribution in key territories and awards season.
