Nate Bargatze was an unconventional choice to host the Halloween 2023 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” But hey, the actors were still on strike, the talented comic’s standup career is taking off, and somebody had to don the George Washington wig.
The result was “Washington’s Dream,” written by SNL co-head writer Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day with an assist from Auguste White, and starring Bargatze as Washington and Day, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, and Kenan Thompson as his dejected Revolutionary War soldiers. Thompson had an especially good reason to be pessimistic about America’s future.
The setting: an American army camp. The year: 1777. Bargatze-as-Washington reminds his tired troops what they’re fighting for: the right to determine their new country’s own “system of weights and measures” — one that’s independent from the British Monarchy with the added benefit of being far more random and confusing. The 4-minute,...

Nazis die and Finns triumph in the Finnish WW2 thriller “Sisu,” a spaghetti Western–style action-adventure set in the Lapland plains of Finland. In this polished genre exercise, a stubborn Finnish gold prospector runs away from, and also violently dispatches, a group of Nazis during the war’s concluding months.
Writer-director Jalmari Helander doesn’t really develop his post-post-modern pastiche beyond its basic high-concept premise, so “Sisu” — premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival — never becomes more than an energetically realized live-action cartoon. Thankfully, Helander and his collaborators deliver a good-enough potboiler, thanks especially to the invigorating contributions of cinematographer Kjell Lagerroos and editor Juho Virolainen.
There’s not much more to “Sisu”, but it certainly looks good and moves briskly from one action scene to the next.
That said, you might be disappointed by “Sisu” if you expect it to develop, either in terms of narrative momentum or dramatic tension.

Ana de Armas’s transformation into Norma Jeane Mortensen and again into Marylin Monroe in “Blonde” lit all the expected fireworks at its Venice Film Festival debut on Thursday. Written and directed by the provocative Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik, and based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the Nc-17 rated movie, long in development, had many concerned about the liberties taken with the tragic facts of Monroe’s life. (Coming out so soon after “Elvis” really does make this a banner year for interpretive looks at mid-century American icons.)
After its near three hour running time, “Blonde” was met with a reported 14 minute standing ovation, the longest such prolonged huzzah of the fest, with audience members chanting “Ana! Ana!” In addition to de Armas in the lead, Bobby Canavale co-stars as Joe Dimaggio, Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy, and Julianne Nicholson as Marilyn/Norma’s mother.
