I have to disagree with the commenter who hated seeing the NCIS characters acting as the people involved in the mystery they were trying to unravel based on the letters between a pair of star crossed lovers from 50 years ago. I thought this was one of the sweetest episodes with solid performances from all of the cast. It was a great change of pace from the normal stories we typically see... and the fact that these are so rare are why we like them so much.

Nice Episode

One of the better episodes in while. Great story and having most of the cast in multiple roles showing versatility was a nice change. David McCallum is featured more than most of his recent appearances. Episodes just seem better when he is more involved.

A formulaic one and yet an interesting episode. Allowing the cast to play different characters for the flashbacks scenes was not exactly Emmy-worthy acting, but it was finally something fresh and different, something NCIS desperately needed.

What a welcome relief. This is a great episode and a fantastic show has returned (at least for one episode). Sadly I have discovered over this season that they are up and down on the quality of each show.
This one ranks way up near the top for just good NCIS shows. We have some fun some mystery and some great character interaction and Duckie is in this one quite a bit. Enjoy.

This took Torres and Bishop to the next level.

I was surprised to read a few months back that viewers are not happy with Bishop's character. I love her and I feel the tiny bit of easy going flirting between her and Torres is a needed change for us viewers from the regular disciplined attitude of the storylines. It's presented to us in a very small way when it crops up, almost leaving us with a question in our minds like "are they or aren't they?" This episode was a perfect way to give us what we want in a way that won't mess up their characters' professional lives, which usually means an end to the show when characters do get together after their teasing and sparring.
Talent Show episode
koohii7 December 2020
When a show thinks it might be ending soon, there's usually a "talent show" episode, where the cast get to prove that they are acting, and capable of doing other roles. The most infamous of these was Lavern & Shirley.
That seems to be the point and purpose of this episode: to show that the cast are capable actors who can play other characters.
Not great. Not terrible. Best part of the episode is that we don't have yet more of the Ziva Soap Opera.

Absolutely my fave NCIS episode

At first, I groaned when the flashbacks started. Then I was utterly charmed by the parallels and the Gilligan's Island quality to some of the silliness (charming silliness) of the episode. Nice break from the previous intensity of the season to date.
Good episode, horrid execution...

The worst episodes in the Bellisario empire have always been the ones where we are forced to watch FIRMLY placed characters that we have formed a bond with take on a "story character "...in the SAME show!!!!
They did it in JAG, I hated it then and hate it now.
The episode would have stood on it's own without this stunt.
Come on Don, you're better than that!
A silly episode

I am sorry but I am another one who found the use of the series regulars playing other characters from the past just plain silly.
As for the story, too many holes in the narrative to make this a good story. We are all entitled to our opinions, but I find it difficult to understand how other reviewers made it 10/10.

Tears

I agree with the thoughts that a lot of other people mentioned, the ending of this episode left me in tears and I think it's one of the absolute best episodes to this point. Which is really saying something. True love, young love, I feel like I was born in the wrong generation. A lot of shows attempt flashbacks where they place current characters in new roles, some successfully and some not so much. And NCIS, as usual, did it perfectly. With the strength of the chemistry between Torres and Bishop at this point, the reflection of them as the young lovers in the story was powerful. And in the episode that prominently features Ducky is automatically solid. Incredibly done.
Ephemral Nature of Life

Been revisiting the series lately, and this season, season 17 has been incredible. The topics, dynamics. Growth arcs of the characters, and the play of them in this episode imagining themselves as these characters was fun and lovely, too. I didn't recognize Mark Harmon as Ann's Dad at first, had to go back and check. Love stories in this. I miss all the main characters/actors that leave the show, another aspect of the ephemeral nature of things and people, yet the new ones grow and become part of this family. It's incredible to look upon the team in a workplace as a kind of family, but that's a main theme of the show. This season between the temporary return of Ziva/Cote de Pablo, the deep confrontations among the characters working out their issues in a very real sense with the overlay of the mysteries they are solving has all been top notch. Whoever is writing and producing this show is so talented, let alone all the directing, etc. Behind the scenes and, of course, the acting. I marvel that Mark Harmon and Ducky/David McCallum keep going! I was a fan of The Man Called U. N. C. L. E. Way back in the day. Glad that this show is omehow like the energizer bunny, it keeps going and going ... and doesn't lose quality or pizazz -- yay.
All except double roles.

"Ephemera" is the best episode of this season since "In the Wind". It's not a fantastic entry to the series, but manages to be a pretty enjoyable one- definitely the best story by Christopher Waild in this season.
Let's start with the good aspects.
. The production values of the episode are great. The direction's solid, the 70-s time period is well-handled, the music fits the scenery and I did like the acting. Mark Harmon has a great presence as usual.
. The story is sweet at times and there are a couple of interesting twists here. The idea of the NCIS team imagining themselves as characters of the mystery was entertaining.
But...
. The romance between Torres and Bishop is not a plausible plotline at the end of the day. Actually find the idea of those two together quite forced. The jokes do not always land and I did feel that the mystery was too straight-forward. Maybe more twists could have spiced it up.
Overall, a fine episode.
6/10 HK.

Didn't work for me
yaornw19 February 2020
The cheesy television device of having series regulars play characters in the historical timeline of a case has been overused by many a series but it just didn't work for me here. The actors are too identified with their characters at this point, and none of them really got so lost in the historical characters that we could forget that. It played like silly dream theatre to me instead of a good NCIS episode. On a series which is already showing its age regularly, they just can't pull this kind of thing off. Are they running out of ideas?
Too twee!

This was like one of those hokey Star Trek episodes where they visited earth of the past and dressed up as gangsters to fit in.
Totally unnecessary and distracting to stick wigs on the cast members and have them play out the contents of old.love letters.
Just could not get into it at all...Awful.
