A screenwriter has signed for the impossible task of bringing TV’s “American Gladiators” to the big screen.
Peter Iliff (Varsity Blues, Point Break) believes he’s man enough to take on the adaptation. “Gladiators” creator Johnny Ferraro is producing with the help of Scott Mednick (who is also reviving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
Variety reports the story will center on the Gladiators as superheroes, which is news to me because I was certain Nitro was some sort of modern-day Hercules. Now I find out he’s just a muscle-bound actor and my memories are tarnished. This is just like last year when I found out Michelle from “Full House” somehow grew into twin skeletons. Next you’re going to tell me reality television is staged.
When the project was originally announced in May 2009, Ferraro saw it as a “compelling story” that would introduce a new set of characters.

In a time when studios are making movies based on board games, does it shock anyone that a big screen version of American Gladiators is in development? It shouldn't, especially when you stop and consider that the Ag movie is capitalizing on Hollywood's last fad, the superhero movie genre. If you were wondering what kind of story an American Gladiators movie would have and if it would try and port over the reality sports gaming competition format to a three-act structure, don't sweat it. For the movie the muscular men and women will be superheroes. I suppose that's an appropriate mode of adaptation considering that the Gladiators have code-names like Dutch, Laser, Ice, Venom, Titan, Siren, Justice, Wolf...whoa, I had to stop myself there! Once you're spouting off their names you just can't stop!
Screenwriter Peter Iliff has been hired to find some way to flesh out the American Gladiators movie.

Kirsty Gallacher has revealed that she is trying to shed her "cold" presenting style. The 33-year-old TV host, who has fronted Kirsty's Home Videos and Gladiators for Sky1, admitted that she is changing her approach after years of being a "perfectionist" at home and on screen. Britain's Prince Harry's new love interest has nicknamed him "jam". Caroline Flack, who presents UK TV show 'Gladiators', has given the 24-year-old royal the fruity moniker so she can discuss him without anyone else knowing. A source told Britain's Sun newspaper: "Caroline picked the code word because Harry has jam-coloured hair and he's sweet. "Caroline realises that Clarence House would frown upon her gossiping about her relationship, so she uses the codeword among her close circle of pals. London -- In his first major hire since taking the reigns as controller of Sky One on May 5, Stuart Murphy has hired former ITV and ABC executive Duncan Gray as temporary commissioner of entertainment, beginning June 1.
Gray will cover the maternity leave period for Sky exec Andrea Hamilton.
Sky will be looking for a roster of new entertainment programs after Murphy cancelled two of his predecessor Richard Woolfe's biggest entertainment shows.
Murphy said he had opted to axe the Shine-produced "Gladiators" and Rdf Media's "Don't Forget The Lyrics" because he was looking to make newer fare and new genres such as comedy part of the Sky One mix.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what form this will take, but perhaps I'm overthinking it: American Gladiators will become a feature film. Not a documentary, but an honest-to-goodness dramatic adaptation of one of the first competition shows on television.
Show creator Johnny Ferraro is working with former Legendary Picture marketing executive Scott Mednick to bring the weekly David vs. Goliath battles to a theater near you. All we can tell you is that the film will bring characters into an action story that takes place in the world of the Gladiators.
Here's where it gets interesting...well, relatively. Ferraro tells Variety that American Gladiators was first envisioned as a film but then "took a detour and became a TV phenomenon." The show originally aired in 1988, when steroids, mullets, and spandex were decidedly more socially acceptable, and it enjoyed a revival on NBC in 2008. That version was co-hosted by Hulk Hogan,...

Royal carriers continue to question Prince Harry’s judgment as details emerge concerning the illegal rave that the prince recently attended in an abandoned East London warehouse. Harry was there with potential new flame Astrid Harbord and her sister, Davina Harbord, whom Tatler has dubbed the “Hardcore Sisters.” At least Harry knows that if he ends up in an unsavory part of town he can call on Caroline Flack—the host of the U.K. combat show Gladiators is certainly not afraid of a little fisticuffs. Harry and Flack have been spotted cavorting as of late. Though she may not hit the same seedy parties as her cousin, royal rider Zara Phillips also wants to behave like a common person. The Queen’s granddaughter, who is currently sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, doesn’t want to switch to promoting private R.B.S. subsidiary Coutts, which is considered...

London -- Not for nothing is she known as the Pied Piper of British broadcasting. Fresh from hiring Jeff Ford back to Rtl-owned Five as director of programming, chief executive Dawn Airey has wooed Sky One boss Richard Woolfe to the post of channel controller.
Woolfe will quit the News Corp.-backed satcaster after three years. During his tenure, he persuaded BSkyB's then-chief executive to bid more than 1 million pounds ($1.5 million) per episode for "Lost" in a bid to lure young male viewers to Sky One and oversaw a program budget of about 200 million pounds ($304 million).
At Five, which has struggled in recent years and seen its audience share decline, he is thought to have had more than twice that budget.
The move, which has sent shockwaves through the industry, will also see Ben Gale, Five's head of programs since May, leave the broadcaster.
