Hard to see anything
bobetjo13 November 2021
This could be a standalone episode. Monster in darkness. Lots of whispering. Given that anybody this family has comes into contact with has a sticky end, the human race is probably safer if they get wiped out.

That apart it was mildly entertaining. At least the annoying school children weren't there.

Intense episode
Chromaki12 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There was a bit of odd writing "70% water comment" but the overall episode was intense and we see more of the aliens which I think are very sluggish in look. It's a short episode and a house invasion style episode but provides us a sense of the scale of what is happening. Really look forward to more!!

Exciting episode but plagiarized from A Quiet Place.
fusideway12 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Entertaining episode but the story or plot came straight out of A Quiet Place. Space traveling aliens are not showing any intelligence unless theses things are just some sort of a attack dog. No other group of characters are shown in this episode so we can assume the next few episodes will be about the soldier then the Japanese and then the school kids with the last episode about all four again. The show need to provide more information about the invaders and how or why they are invading earth. Now that we know how to kill the attack dogs we can presume the woman will somehow tell the military and in the final episode they will kick some alien arses unless there's a superior alien waiting in the background with tech that can wipe us out in a blink.

Nails on a chalkboard. Frustrating episode.
AmplifiedLife12 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
IDK why this show compels me to write reviews. I almost never do this.

When the opening shot makes the conspiracy theory characters appear smarter than the lead character because she forgot she had kids. Kids, who are her main motivation in other episodes? Silly.

When a tea kettle is audible from outside. When the lead character walks around screaming at a pitch that gives you a headache. But at least now you've been primed to understand sound will be central to survival in this episode. Kinda.

Now.... Be quiet! While I whisper! No you be quiet while I shout. Lol... no you be quiet while my kid starts crying. But not as loud as the Karen is screaming, just quieter than I whimper. But louder than a thunderstorm.

Quiet characters are left alone, and long as they're quiet, while noisy characters are attacked, so everyone inevitability flees quiet places to make noise. Dumb.

"Best military in the universe!" was a solid retort, granted it came from the mouth of the show's most pathetic character. So intelligence does exist in the show's universe. Can we get more of it?

When the character spends most of episode focused on being quiet, then risks her stupid kids lives (sorry but the show does not make them sympathetic), by mindlessly revving her engine as the immobilized car makes a ton of noise. Because there's only one alien? Then she just backs in to a wall. So far I find myself rooting for the intelligent life, the aliens, to prevail on this show.

When the CG is so dark you have to pause the show to adjust your settings? Remember that one Game of Thrones episode that was criticized for being too dark? It's like that, but not as bad because most Apple displays have HDR now. It looked okay on my OLED iPhone and even better on my iPad Pro, but still, it was almost impossible to see any detail on that basement window shot. Likely intentional. The car scene looked pretty good.

Frustration abounds. But I'll keep watching bcos I pay for AppleTV+.

The fuse just lit.
chrisforeman-0192013 November 2021
Well the slow burn finally came to an end and what a bang it produced. The show changed tack and concentrated on just one story arc, probably the best one as well. Strange, people are complaining about the episode being too dark. I would seriously suggest getting a new TV or their eyes tested. Unless of course they are running out of things to complain about.

Getting better

Boring? Not at all! Previous episodes maybe...this one, make a diference. Scenes with a lot of suspence. Details of the creatures despite the dark scenes.

First episode of the show!
maurobif17 November 2021
It's true: video is way too dark and that's awful. BUT: -I don't agree with the user who said that darkness is due to a cheap CGI. I mean, it's possible, but I think it's kinda "wanted" in terms of creating that anxiogenic atmosphere and they just got carried away.

-This episode IS NOT boring. I agreed with the ratings of the first episodes. On the contrary, i found this episode really solid: darkness (even if too much) actually helped to immerse my self and get super panicked. In the other episodes I've always been a little distracted, but not this time when for 30 minutes straight the rythm was impressive.

Anyway: maybe my rating is a bit high. It's just to counterbalance because it deserves more.

1st episode that is as good
grlym-4684916 November 2021
This episode is very reminiscent of the movie "quiet place". Regardless. It's the first episode that felt worth the time spent ti watch it at all. Predictable, but good regardless. If more episodes are like this, the show may be salvageable.

This one is scary

Hang on to your hat....the closest movie this episode reminds me of is "A Quiet Place". It is so tense at times that I was telling certain characters to shut up! Yelling at my computer! Have fun....not recommended for younger children to watch.....

Way too dark.
tstrahle-213-25172212 November 2021
Not dark thematically but dark visually. Couldn't see a thing. Even on my new 65" OLED TV with the lights off. I've noticed a lot of shows lately, particularly Apple+, lowering the brightness of their programming. Is it an energy saving thing? Made this episode unwatchable. The acting is pretty good on this series but you'd never know it in the dark. So basically think of this episode as a podcast.

Absolutely terrifying!
newpapyrus13 November 2021
This episode reminds me of the alien encounter in the classic 1950s film War of the Worlds- but on steroids. The episode starts off with increasing dread that quickly evolves into absolute terror and horror. What a thrill ride!

Give Miss Farahani her Emmy nomination!

Warning: Spoilers
I can only watch this on the cross trainer because it is so dire - but my masochistic side compels me to watch this in the vain hope that a phoenix of a show will rise from the ashes. Erm.. nope - still not happening

Well at least I burned 250+ calories - unfortunately damaged about a billion brain cells in the process.

Pretty much the whole episode was a take on the Gene Barry and Ann Robinson scene from War of the Worlds 1953 - with less suspense I may add.

The local amateur dramatics society have gotten involved to add sound effects with their box of glass, plank of wood + hammer - and someone with a violin who had never played before. Turn down the lighting till you can't see anything always helps build that sense of threat...

Once more characters do stupid, unrealistic things that would decrease their chances of survival by about a million percent.

The mother (Aneesha Malik) makes choices based on plot advancement. Last week she played doctor - this week she remembers she has a family and doesn't want to play doctors anymore.

This week her amnesia kicks in again. Owner of the house has a shotgun - he tells them it is loaded and he has only one shot left cos he used the other one on the alien. Perfect time to pipe up that you have a pistol? Pfft - don't be ridiculous I hear you all shouting!

I found the episode dull, predictable filled with sterotypical jump scare moments that aren't even alarming - glad it's over.

It can't get any worse can it?

I gave it a 2 cos the pointless bunch of school kids weren't in it :)

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone needs a show to shred and shoot their nerf gun at, and this is the one. But it's not even amusing accidentally anymore.

Finally, aliens. Only took six episodes. And CGI that makes Sharknado look like Avatar.

For a minute we get hopeful and actually think the cheating husband annoying character is dead, but NOPE!!! The writers decide to troll us poor saps once again and keep that clown around for a while longer.

We didn't get any other storylines this time around; just focused on this train wreck of a family in an episode where you'd think at least the production team knows where the brightness is in Final Cut Pro.

This show is so bad that it could lead to divorces in real life...

Terrifying. Hold your breath.
s-keister12 November 2021
This episode was the best horror movie I've seen in years. Makes "Quiet Place" look tame. This show often loses momentum by jumping around to characters who aren't doing much. This one sticks to one location and lays on the suspense.

Intense
tmasondvm28 January 2023
The negative reviews of this series have been baffling. Too slow. Where are the aliens. Blah blah blah. Well the aliens showed up and now people are complaining it's too dark? Give me freaking break. The series has been excellent, tense, a sprawling drama that takes multiple story arcs and blends them together because ITS AN ALIEN INVASION OF EARTH. And the human impact is what makes the scenario so interesting as terrifying. What would you do? That's what they stories asks the viewer to ponder. How would you react to the disorientation of the news! The acting is top notch. The story is absolutely compelling. This episode was shorter than previous ones but it was so intense I couldn't have taken more. Don't listen to many of the other reviews on here. This is an excellent very suspenseful series.

This show is a slow burn... UNTIL NOW!

One of the most gripping TV experiences I've ever seen.

I tell you what. I don't think the Aliens are friendly.

Worst episode, losing the edge big time. DARK doesn't equal scary.

Warning: Spoilers
What happened to all of the other story lines? So dark, you can't see squat. I have a great OLED (could actually see things in GOTH darkness). This was unwatchable. Alien in the house and people are noisy AF? Makes no sense. Will finish it out but I'm sure it's a waste of time. Ugh.

When they were hiding in the attic. It would have been much more effective if they all had shut up. It was so frustrating that they didn't that it took me out of the story.

Poor acting, silly decision making and a little dark
JamesR197312 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I guess the main positive for this episode is that finally we get to see some alien action (or not depending on how good your TV is). Whether it needed 5 episodes to get there of course is debatable but, unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh anything good.

Setting aside the poor lighting, the acting and writing in this was b-movie standard at best. Some of the decisions both the husband and wife make are just baffling and don't make sense: Why did she just abandon her children to start with and suddenly decide to go back? Why did he think dismantling a barricade on his own with an alien creeping around was a logical thing to do? Why did they keep telling each other to be quiet but continued to argue with one another loudly? I could go on....

Even the FX didn't look that great - part of that may be down to the darkness, but even the view out of the back of the van seemed a bit suspect.

I will continue to watch, just to see how it pans out, but there is the impending dread of a whole episode with just the school kids - and that could tip me over the edge.

It's finally taking off!
valerianodellalonga14 November 2021
Wow!

This episode was thrilling and engaging.

The show is finally taking off!

No jumps between characters and only focused on one of them. The story is finally unfolding and getting out of staleness it was suffering from in the last 2 episodes.

I knew this series had potential, and it's now meeting my expectations.

In drop and in excess
rikudouensof13 November 2021
A single character side of view. Discoveries and decisions. For a smart lady, I question her decision making speed.

A proper environment to introduce the smaller invaders. Gave a proper finishing touch to Halloween!

For all watchers who want to watch something cheerful and colorful, this is sci-horror, it is dark. For all you anti-DC, anti-predator and anti-darkness this is not for you. Go watch Cinderella or something.

Unwatchable
Wilishem3 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. So aliens can wipe out a heavily armed patrol in Humvees but struggle with a scared lady in an SUV?

2. Instead of staying quiet in the attic for 35 minutes, people decide to wander through the house. Apparently that's the most logical thing to do.

3. Husband got knocked down by the alien, but somehow survives. Weird. Especially after the Humvee squad situation.

I have to confess. I'm watching this show with my cursor hovering over skip 30 seconds button. It's THAT bad.

Couldn't see most of it
johninvaldosta12 November 2021
I dislike night shots even on my 60" Sony led. Nearly all of the house scene was not viewable due to it being a night shot with inappropriate lighting. If Kubrick can shoot with only candle light, surely some form of light could have been used to be able to see the actors and aliens.

Gave it a 4 based on the inadequate lighting. From the sounds of it I thought it would be a great episode yet it is difficult to review what can't be seen.

Terrible kid actors
ajwiiiaw24 June 2022
If there is a second season please kill off these terrible kid actors. This stupid 10 year old girl cries like a toddler and screams all the time like an idiot. Why do you enlist such terrible kid actors? The scenes were way too dark to tell what was going on throughout most of this episode.
