Jimmy Fallon returned to host Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2013 and the versatile star kicked off the night with a massive musical monologue.
After appearing as Ivanka Trump's husband, Jared Kushner, in a hilarious and (mostly) silent role in the cold open, Fallon took to the Studio 8H stage to open up SNL's first-ever live-on-both-coasts episode with an epic dance number involving dozens of back-up dancers.
"Tonight is bigger than just a show," Fallon said, as David Bowie's "Let's Dance" began to swell. "It's a party!"

Lip syncing like a pro, Fallon walked off stage and was followed by a studio audience (filled with professional back-up dancers) as they danced through the halls of the studio.

The late rapper Tupac Shakur and Seattle-based rockers Pearl Jam lead a class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees that also include folkie Joan Baez and 1970s favorites Journey, Yes and Electric Light Orchestra.
The rock hall also said Tuesday it would give a special award to Nile Rodgers, whose disco-era band Chic failed again to make the cut after its 11th time nominated.
Baez will be inducted only months after her 1960s paramour, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Hall's 32nd annual induction ceremony will take place on April 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. HBO will show highlights later, with SiriusXM doing a radio broadcast.

In 1983, David Bowie, video director David Mallet and a skeleton crew traveled from London to the town of Carinda, Australia – population: 194 – to make the video for "Let's Dance," the title track from the singer's best-selling album. It was an unusual clip even for Bowie, as the video blended scenes of care-free carousing with a highly politicized statement on the plight of Australia's Aboriginal people. That dichotomy is explored in the fascinating short film Let's Dance: Bowie Down Under, set to premiere next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

"Let's Dance" - and then some! Lady Gaga showed off a lot more than her moves while honoring David Bowie at the Grammy Awards in L.A. Monday. Taking the Staples Center stage in a flaming red wig and a flashy ensemble, Gaga belted out a medley of the late icon's hits with legendary guitarist and Bowie collaborator Nile Rodgers, wailing her way through "Space Oddity," "Changes," "Ziggy Stardust," "Suffragette City," "Rebel Rebel," "Fashion," "Fame" and "Let's Dance" before closing the electric set with the triumphant "Heroes." True to form, the 29-year-old superstar's tribute to her avant-garde forefather was filled with energy,...

David Bowie's spirit lived on at the 2016 Grammys Monday. Lady Gaga performed a moving tribute to the rock icon, one of the most celebrated musicians of all time, who died at age 69 on Jan. 10. Channeling Bowie's glam rock alter ego Ziggy Stardust with red-orange hair, sparkling makeup, a white embellished suit, white shoes and a light pink feathered boa, Gaga sang a medley of his songs, opening with "Space Oddity." She also performed tracks such as "Suffragette City," "Fashion," "Let's Dance" and "Heroes." Gaga, 29, walked the red carpet channeling Stardust as well, wearing, a custom Marc Jacobs blue embellished...

Lady Gaga will play double duty this awards season: She's been chosen to perform a David Bowie tribute at this year's Grammys, the show announced on Tuesday. Producer Ken Ehrlich says that Gaga had already been booked to play the show, but after Bowie died, the Grammys looked to the singer who has long named the Starman as her greatest influence (even dressing as Ziggy Stardust during her Fame days) to honor him. Nile Rodgers, who produced 1983's Let's Dance, will serve as the tribute's musical director. The performance has been described as an "unprecedented, technology-infused Grammy moment" in partnership with Intel and will cover at least three or four Bowie songs. "It's going to be a true homage to who David was, particularly musically, but not ignoring his influence on fashion and pop culture in a broader way," Ehrlich says. Bowie will also receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award...

Editor's note: we don't like to run material to generate clicks off the death of someone. We did, however, want to talk about the wonderful film and TV work that the late, great David Bowie has left behind. Hence, we've thus held this piece back to now. If it still feels too soon, then do give it a miss.
David Bowie's state of existence at the time of performing influenced his musical ‘personas’ enormously. Though such characters as Diamond Dogs’ Halloween Jack or Ashes To Ashes’ Pierrot seem superficially too outré and theatrical to be based in anything real, retrospectively we can see a private life exposed: Bowie’s exposure to fame and feelings of being an outsider informed the Ziggy...

As David Bowie's Blackstar Album Sales Soar, Late Legend is Also Remembered as a Financial Innovator
David Bowie had a long and legendary career, but since his passing on Monday, his music is selling better than ever. The late rocker's death has pushed sales of his new album Blackstar to the No. 1 spot on iTunes and it's also expected to become the first No. 1 album of his career in the U.S. on the Billboard chart. And it's not just the new stuff fans are clamoring for. They can't get enough of his back catalog either. In addition to Blackstar, which was released on Jan. 8, just two days before Bowie's death, three other Bowie albums occupy the top 10 list on iTunes.

Even though the fellow English crooners had a lot in common, David Bowie managed to leave Sting in awe. In an exclusive statement to People, Sting reflects on Bowie's death at the age of 69 on Sunday. For Sting, 64, the loss of music's history-making icon brought back a cherished memory he shares with wife Trudie Styler, 62. "The first time Trudie and I met David was during the Serious Moonlight Tour somewhere in the U.S.," Sting says of Bowie's 1983 jaunt. "We were watching the show from the side of the stage, Trudie heavily pregnant with our daughter Mickey." Sting continues, "David...

Nearly 50 years after his debut, David Bowie is set to have his first No. 1 album on the U.S. charts: Billboard reports that projections for Bowie's final album, Blackstar, put it at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart. The album, released just two days before Bowie's death, is expected to sell in the range of 130,000 albums, putting it ahead of 25 and ending Adele's seven-week streak at No. 1. Though Bowie is universally beloved, his music was never quite the critical or commercial success in America that his persona was. None of his previous 24 albums ever debuted higher than No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and none made the Top 10 on the year-end critics' Pazz + Jop poll. (Singles-wise, only "Fame" and "Let's Dance" ever topped the Hot 100.) But Bowie's work appears to have gotten more popular with age: Consider it wasn't until 2013's...

David Bowie, the other-worldly musician who broke pop and rock boundaries with his creative musicianship, nonconformity, striking visuals and a genre-spanning persona he christened Ziggy Stardust, died of cancer Sunday. He was 69 and had just released a new album.
Bowie, whose hits included "Space Oddity," ''Fame," ''Heroes" and "Let's Dance," died "peacefully" and was surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday. The singer had fought cancer for 18 months.
Long before alter egos and wild outfits became commonplace in pop, Bowie turned the music world upside down with the release of the 1972 album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" which introduced one of music's most famous personas. Ziggy Stardust was a concept album that imagined a rock star from outer space trying to make his way in the music world. When I was not much older than my oldest son is now, either fourth or fifth grade, the older girl next door who spent several years slowly initiating me to both the secret worlds of rock'n'roll and kissing, thus assuring those things would forever be linked in my mind, played me one of the many 45s she kept in a big giant carry-around box with the Rolling Stone lips on the cover. This one, she assured me, was "mind-blowing." She was right. The first time I heard "Space Oddity," it felt like I lifted off the ground with that countdown, infinity in endless mandala opening above me, as that strange voice, so thin at times, so powerful at others, sang with such longing, such powerful desire to both reach back to a humanity left behind and rocket on into whatever cosmic possibilities lay ahead. I must have played that record...

Only a few days out from the release of his new "definitive collection" box set, David Bowie takes you out to an alley and laments your death. The Thin White Duke has released the new music video for "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)" that's black and white and film noir all over. Serving more as a lyric video than a narrative, the clip is directed by Tom Hingston (who leads a British creative agency) and photographer Jimmy King. It subtly lets you focus on the small story Bowie's telling of Sue, and the humming contributions of the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Grammy Award-nominated saxophone honcho Donnie McCaslin. "Sue" and Bowie's recently released (and dizzyingly titled) demo "Tis a Pity She Was a Whore" were released in promoting "Nothing Has Changed," a new retrospective box set from Bowie and Columbia/Legacy. Nile Rodgers, the legendary guitarist and producer who has worked with everyone from Madonna and Diana Ross to Daft Punk, threw his annual All For the East End (Aftee) fundraiser on Long Island on Saturday with appearances by Adam Lambert and mega DJ Avicii.
Rodgers worked with Lambert on the singer's last studio album, "Trespassing," but on Saturday he debuted a new collaboration with the "American Idol" star and Avicii entitled "Lay Me Down," which will be featured on the DJ's upcoming debut album, "True."
The song, which "Rolling Stone" has called a "glitter-caked, Studio 54-ready jam," got the crowd dancing and listeners at home probably won't be able to resist either.
While Lambert didn't perform his new song with Avicii -- it was just the studio version that was played -- he did take the stage to sing the David Bowie classic "Let's Dance" with Rodgers (who produced the original) playing guitar.

After a year off in 2012, Glastonbury returned with a triumphant bang that won't soon be forgotten. Thousands of acts performed this weekend on over 50 stages in the UK's biggest music festival, with 180,000 people descending on a sprawling English farm.

Tickets sold out in minutes last October, long before The Stones, Mumford and Sons, The Arctic Monkeys and Public Enemy were confirmed as headliners. Those who did score tickets also had the opportunity to catch unexpected shows, like Radiohead singer Thom Yorke's secret set this year.

Noah Baumbach directed his first feature-length movie, "Kicking and Screaming," in 1995, about that uncertain, post-college phase of life. (It's a personal favorite of this reporter.) Of course, the best known movie with that title is a 2005 effort about a youth soccer team starring Will Ferrell. (Not a personal favorite of this reporter, primarily because of the number of times I've switched the channel to TBS, only to see this version instead of Baumbach's.) As it turns out, Baumbach is annoyed by the similarities of these titles, too, and it has everything to do why the name of his new movie is "Frances Ha."
"Frances Ha," not called "Frances" because there's already a Jessica Lange film with that title, has been a darling of the festival circuit since it debuted at the Telluride Film Festival in September. Trend-setter, impresario, phenomenon: David Bowie has shaped entire subcultures. Jon Savage traces the star's talent for reinvention and his catalytic encounter with William Burroughs
William Burroughs: The weapon of the Wild Boys is a bowie knife, an 18in bowie knife, did you know that?
David Bowie: An 18in bowie knife … you don't do things by halves do you? No, I didn't know that was their weapon. The name Bowie just appealed to me when I was younger. I was into a kind of heavy philosophy thing when I was 16 years old, and I wanted a truism about cutting through the lies and all that.
On 28 February 1974, Rolling Stone magazine published a remarkable encounter between David Bowie and William Burroughs. Entitled "Beat Godfather Meets Glitter Mainman", the event had been hosted in November 1973 by the American journalist A Craig Copetas. As published it took the form of a Q...

We tuned in for host Adam Lambert, but VH1's Divas Live contained a number of eye-popping, deeply danceable moments last night. Miley Cyrus sang Billy Idol, Brandy, Kelly Rowland, and Jordin Sparks wooed us with mad vocals and killer hand choreography, and even Sheila E. dropped by for an otherworldly drumming exhibition as part of a Donna Summer tribute.

I remember back in school how annoyed I would get with my English teachers as we dissected every word in the books we were assigned to read. It seemed not a sentence would go by that didn't hold some larger meaning. I'd be thinking, "Not every word has to have some deeper meaning. Can't an author simply be telling a story?" When it comes to films, I think a larger case can be made for looking deeper into things given they are working under tighter constraints than most books, but at the same time I can't tell you how many interviews I've read where directors have been asked the "What did you mean by X? And was there anything to Y?" and the answer comes back, "Nothing really, just thought it worked for the story." In fact, I had a similar situation recently when discussing The Perks of Being a Wallflower...

Throughout his long and storied career, David Bowie has made a habit out of innovating and staying way ahead of the curve. Rather than shift as things are happening (the way Madonna does), Bowie has always anticipated where culture is moving and has gotten there first. He doesn't always knock it out of the park (neither his electronica album Earthling nor his dalliance with Tin Machine should really be considered career victories), but more often than not he gets it right. He has even been on top of innovations that have nothing to do with music, as Bowie was one of the first major artists to embrace the Internet (he even had his own AOL-esque web portal for a while) and on this day in 1997 he kicked off one of the boldest business moves of his career when he sold "Bowie Bonds," which were investment securities people could by that...

Fashion icon Iman isn't rushing husband David Bowie back to work - because he's a great house-husband and father. The "Let's Dance" rocker has been on hiatus from music for a decade and his wife reveals he has no plans for a return to the spotlight and she's fine with that.
She says, "I will not make him do it because we love him so much that we want him to stay at home. It's really up to him. He has a lot of other things."
"He's a writer and he's a painter, he does sculpture and he's a dad to our 10 year old daughter, so I think his life is full. He'll decide when he wants to come back."...

When Halloween rolls around, we get out our ever-increasing mix of horror songs, many of which come from movies. List junkies that we are, we had the idea of ranking the best ones in order of greatness, scariness, coolness and cheesiness, or however the mood struck us. Unlike the Academy we are allowing cover versions, so long as they were actually recorded for the movie. We're also disqualifying instrumental and incidental music, which would include Bernard Herrmann's "Psycho Theme," John Carpenter's "Halloween Theme," Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" and Goblin's music. These are pop songs only. Finally, we're disqualifying such classic Halloween party music as "Ghostbusters," "Weird Science" and "Time Warp," because they do not actually originate from horror films. Rules out of the way, here we go:
9. "Cat People," by David Bowie
From Cat People (1982)
Paul Schrader's remake of one of my favorite movies,...

The next title in the "Rare And Unseen" DVD collection is "David Bowie", available November 23, 2010.
"...Most famous for his alter-ego, the ostentatious, androgynous 'Ziggy Stardust' during the glam-rock era of the early 1970's, David Bowie has continually reinvented his music/image, regarded as an influential innovator, particularly in rock music.
"He has had numerous top ten hits, notably 'China Girl', 'Modern Love', 'Starman', 'Space Oddity', 'Under Pressure' and 'Let's Dance', among many others. Bowie is also a multi-instrumentalist, singing vocals as well as playing electric, acoustic, and twelve string guitar, keyboards, alto, tenor, piano, harmonica, xylophone, tambourine, drums, percussion and many other instruments, making him one of the most multi-talented musicians in the world.
"Told through missing-believed-wiped archive interviews and rare and unseen footage, this insightful DVD is a worthy addition to any Bowie collection..."
Unseen footage includes film from the ITN archive, lost and now restored TV...

They say a well-rounded education is the key to success, and if that truly is the case, the my schooling is woefully incomplete when it comes to the subject of pop. That's why we bring you "Popology," the guide to modern radio-friendly stars as seen through the eyes of a guy who grew up on punk and metal. In case you missed previous installments, catch up with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and the Spice Girls here.
In this week's installment, Puff Daddy brings rap to the radio.
In today's musical landscape, it's easy to take hip-hop for granted as a force on pop radio. There have been crossover hits as long as there have been DJs cutting up breakbeats and MCs spitting rhymes. And while pop radio readily embraces rap songs that have no aspirations to be pop tunes (the...

Producers weigh in on how the 'American Idol' runner-up can best capitalize on the show.

Adam Lambert just spent the last four months learning new songs each week, taking part in commercial and photo shoots, and being picked apart by "American Idol" judges, Internet gossipmongers and the general public. Now that the show is over, the truly hard work begins: He'll have to record an album.
In the annals of "Idol," there are winners and losers who've delivered mega-hit debuts (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry), and there are winners and losers who've turned in subpar first discs (Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis). How will this first mainstream-recording experiment go for the eighth-season runner-up? MTV News talked to music experts to get their takes on what type of album Lambert should make, which artists he should take inspiration from,...
