Fail Safe is slow paced and character driven, a build up episode you don't want miss
Holt34421 July 2021
In the 13th episode of Superman and Lois, things slow down and we get to see the Kents and Cushings deal with the fallout from Morgan's use of Smallville. It isn't as incredible as the previous episodes but still a great one, it also gives the characters time to reflect and develop as characters. The writing is still on the same level as before, you see again and again how much the writers love the source material. Ian Samoil directed "Fail Safe" and there were some good direction in this episode, but notably really well shot. He have worked on so many shows as a Second Unit Director, it probably were an exciting experience for him to be the director and the passion he has for the work shows.

For a build up episode, this does everything right. There's now two episodes left and this slower paced episode was needed. For a "filler" this episode contains a lot of new locations, and with the beautiful cinematography, it's presented to the screen so well. Visual effects are too great, it's also shot and edited in a smart way. Every main character gets their fair share of screen time and it's never wasted, the scenes serves the overall story and the characters own character arcs. There's also some fantastic acting and drama. An episode you don't want to miss.

Not their strongest episode, but still solid

Warning: Spoilers
I would say this is more of the aftermath and consequences from the last few episodes, which makes sense cuz the last few episodes were very eventful. This is essentially the breather before the last two episodes.

Pros: Everyone is experiencing the consequences, which is great.

-Special effects are really good here.

-General Lane's growth as a character
  • Cinematography is stunning, especially the Farm shots
Although I would say that the teenage drama isn't very strong in this show, especially in this episode, even though the brother dynamic works really well.

And I would say that the dialogue feels really stilted in this episode, especially with the teenagers.

I wished we got more John Henry Irons in this episode Overall: 7.5/10.

Knowing Supergirl season 1 makes this even Better
sophiejensen-1306317 September 2023
There is something in this episode that I didn't see for YEARS. And now that I do of course it drowns everything else out for me. Knowledge of the first 2 seasons of Supergirl usually helps deepen the appreciation for this show. And having something so closely-related to compare it to helps you notice things you otherwise would miss or dis-miss. This episode most especially. I have seen this episode over a dozen times and always a little annoyed that Clark didn't notice something was going on with Tal when he was in the cell. Tal started rubbing his head, looking increasingly tired, as a result of having 'voices in his head', but Clark didn't' seem to notice anything out of the ordinary. Surely Clark wasn't so preoccupied to miss what was right in front of his face. Mentally and out of pure boredom I started comparing Tal Rho's cell to General Astra's in season one of Supergirl, under Glenn Moshower's General Lane and a cathedral size bell went off in my head: Clark noticed his distress it but attributed it to the Green Kryptonite. I always assumed it was the rather intense 'training' he'd learned from Zeta that let Tal sit there without caring much for getting sick. I mean that stuff would make either of them sick and no matter how much of a disaffected soldier Zeta had trained Tal-Rho to be, he couldn't cure him of his bodies reaction to radioactive pieces of their home-world. So when Clark sees Tal shaking and his nerves getting frayed, he's not surprised at all. But neither has he any reason to think anything is going on that wouldn't be explained by sitting in a cell surrounded by a Kryptonians only poison. Rather is a lot of build-up not none of it is rushed, forced or tedious. Nothing feels boring and no time feels wasted. It really is a well- paced episode with a slow build up to whatever is coming next. All told this is a strong 'pause before the final bout' kind of episode.

As much so if not more so than "A Brief Reminisce before Cataclysmic Events" a couple episodes ago. An episode whose actual title references how much of a calm before the storm it is.

This show is proof...

That wholesome entertaining television is still possible. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of different things from wholesome to whatever that new excuse for Gossip Girl is. But while I mindlessly watch a lot of shows, I actively watch Superman & Lois. I'm not distracted by my phone or so busy work. I love these characters and this story. It's weird that there were variants of characters with the name John in this episode. If you aren't watching this then start. I hope this one is around for a long time and stays with this same energy.

Even a sorta downtime episode is amazing and sets the ball rolling. Ex. Those character moments were very important to the overall arc & Those last few minutes? Wowza! Gotta say: S&L is definitely a love letter to Superman and Superman fans thru and thru. Every episode gets better and better.

Fail Safe
Prismark1014 April 2022
This is a low key episode in comparison to the previous few.

All the hallmarks of a season being stretched. Morgan Edge is in custody and Superman is still trying to get through with him regarding the Eradicator.

The rest of the episode is the fallout after Edge's failed plan.

Clark Kent contemplates a life where Superman does lose control, become evil. Hence why he has developed a bond with John Henry Irons.

Kyle Cushing is being ostracised but it is hard to feel sympathy for him. He rebuffed people who were cautious about Edge.

Now people are ignoring him and Kyle does not like it.

There is an element of this being the calm before the storm. You just know Morgan Edge has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Here we go.

Warning: Spoilers
Superman questions Tal what happened to the Eradicator and Leslie Larr. Edge cannot tell him because the advanced jail cell around him is blocking his whatever it's called. Jonathan and Jordan go to school for an assembly which the Principal is gonna address the recent events. It always has to be in the Gym which makes sense because it can hold hundreds of students. Lois and Chrissy are planning to make "the biggest headline of the year", but they are having some trouble because there's no hard evidence to prove the madness. Luthor makes a Kryptonian Tracking System that can track the whereabouts of Larr until it detects her. Superman and Luthor seek out Larr. Meanwhile, the Military are helping them. Here, we get action until Luthor releases some sort of plasma to knock her out. Jonathan and Sarah skip the assembly, discussing stuff. Great dialogue here. I am loving the chemistry between the two. Lois has an argument with his father on what the authorities will state and why is it not out yet. Superman informs Tal that they have caught Leslie. I am having the sense that Tegan has a crush on Jordan, otherwise than wanting to know him. Let's see how this will work out in the next episodes, or she doesn't appear anymore. The police catch the two love birds kissing, lmao. Superman speaks to the General to continue 7734. I just realized that if you use a calculator and you type in 7734, you look upside down, and it resembles "hell". Clark and Lois argue over Luthor. Lois gets in the car and picks up Jordan. Lois returns and discusses with Clark. I always god damn love the soundtrack here, wonderfully beautiful. Lois motivates that Chrissy herself can only write the story instead of Lois. Tal gains new abilities like making his eye colors blue. I wonder what the heck does that mean. Lois & Clark makes the boys apologize for skipping school. Smh, imagine skipping school...

The Military is aware that Tal is gaining some new abilities, and his vitals are not responding. This is some freaky sh**! He uses his new abilities to break the glass, knocking out the soldiers, escaping the facility. The General uses his device to call Superman. He flies up to the atmosphere and arrives back telling the General that he can't find him. Tal is harnessing the solar energy of the Sun: thus, becoming the Eradicator!

Thoughts?

I am loving Tal's flashbacks. Awkward statement I am gonna say here, but his hair is like mine. Lmao. Still loving the dynamic between Lois & Chrissy even though it is toxic, but I dig it. What I love most about this episode is the news impacting the characters, and it is well-done. I love how forgiveness is a key element in the last 25-minutes.

10/10.
