For only the second time in its 15 year history there is no actor among the honorees for this year’s select group receiving the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Governors Awards. Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been admitted to a hospital due to “very serious” stomach problems, according to her close friend, Gayle King, on CBS Mornings.
Winfrey had been suffering from a severe stomach issue, which she described as a “stomach flu” where “stuff was coming out of both ends,” King said. The situation was so dire that Winfrey had to be hospitalized for dehydration and receive intravenous (IV) treatment.
“Needless to say, she ended up in the hospital, dehydration, she had an IV. So it was a very serious thing,” King shared with the viewers, though she refrained from going into further details. “I won’t get too graphic,” she added.
Despite the seriousness of Winfrey’s medical emergency, King reassured the audience that the 70-year-old media titan “will be ok” and expressed hope that Winfrey would not be upset with her for sharing this personal information.

Steven Spielberg’s decades-long career can only be described with one word – legendary. However, that didn’t make the Jaws creator flinch, in fact, he wouldn’t change anything about it if he were to remake it again today.

Schindler’s List is arguably one of the most significant additions to the world of cinema, crafted by none other than Steven Spielberg. However, recognizing the grittiness and complexity of the subject matter, the director waited for more than a decade before fully committing to the project.

Now, looking back, both Spielberg and audiences alike are glad he took the plunge. The film garnered seven Oscars and achieved the kind of acclaim many directors can only dream of in their entire careers.
Steven Spielberg Deemed Himself Not Mature Enough to Handle Schindler’s List
Steven Spielberg had been acquainted with the idea of the project Schindler’s List for a considerable length of time before he eventually brought it to life. However, he admitted that what he lacked back then was the courage and experience necessary to undertake such a monumental project.

A six-minute music video for Ariana Grande's latest single, "The Boy is Mine," has been released, and it finds the pop megastar channelling iconic Batman baddie/love interest, Catwoman.
The premise of the video focuses on You star Penn Badgley as the mayor of an unnamed city (we're guessing they couldn't call it Gotham), who decides to unleash an army of stray cats to rid the streets of a rat infestation. Grande plays a woman who is obsessed with the mayor and creates a love potion to make him fall for her.
Then, in a scene which appears to pay homage to Michelle Pfeiffer's Selina Kyle creating her costume in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, Grande dons a homemade Catwoman suit of her own and takes to the streets.
The tune is a single from Grande’s newest album, Eternal Eunshine, and samples Brandy and Monica's 1998 hit of the same name.

The mystical realm of Harry Potter serves as the perfect backdrop for a go-to comfort movie. Under the aegis of directors like Chris Columbus and David Yates, the movie adaptations of the globally cherished novel series were a prominent success. But would the wizardly creations have been as revered, had someone like the three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg helmed the project?

Astoundingly enough, the Jurassic Park director did come incredibly close to directing a Harry Potter film, only to forsake it after a few initial months. Turns out, the magic-infused world of Hogwarts wasn’t enticing enough for him to recreate on the silver screen. Or challenging, for that matter.

You can chart Steven Spielberg's evolution as a director by the "Indiana Jones" films. By 1981, the former wunderkind had gotten the wind knocked out of him by the muted reaction to his erratic 1979 burlesque "1941" (which earned him a tsk-tsking from John Wayne) and was hungry for a rebound. Teaming up with his buddy George Lucas, he made "Raiders of the Lost Ark," a rollicking pastiche that has since supplanted the '30s and '40s serials that inspired their action-adventure in our cultural consciousness.
1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" saw Spielberg wade further into the horror pool he'd explored two years earlier in "Poltergeist," a suburban nightmare that neither he nor director Tobe Hooper can take full credit for. "Temple of Doom" might just feature some of the most exhilarating pacing and grandest spectacle of the filmmaker's career, but that's difficult to appreciate beneath the film's racial insensitivity and general mean-spiritedness.

Steven Spielberg’s 1985 classic that took home 11 Oscar nominations is by no means a feat of mere auteurist filmmaking but one showing exceptional skill and brilliance. Behind the camera, there is none other than Spielberg, even though his inspiration might often come from borrowed sources. As such, the adaptation of Alice Walkerʼs Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel, The Color Purple, couldnʼt have been in better hands than the surgically gifted ones of the venerated director.

After much deliberation and struggle, the musical drama produced by Spielberg and Oprah made it onto the screens in 2023 to widespread acclaim. However, the story behind its production is an award-worthy tale in itself.

But it turns out it is just good ol’ Mel Gibson, who overpowers and flips this 50-year-old character, played by a 40-year-old actor, Danny Glover. Humiliated and hurt, Danny Glover spits out an iconic line that has come to define his career and become a meme, “I’m too old for this shit.” Danny Glover was too old for this shit three decades ago… but he has kept on grinding, making motion pictures ever since. But maybe Danny Glover is too old for this shit… if that “shit” is good movies. Oh, I kid! I kid!

Taraji P. Henson has been one of the most vocal actresses in Hollywood at the moment. The Hidden Figures star gained recognition for her role in Hustle & Flow, and David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She has since starred in a number of films such as The Karate Kid.
Henson recently opened up about many of the issues she faced while filming the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. The novel by Alice Walker was first adapted by Steven Spielberg, which has since gained many criticisms for its portrayal of Black people. Henson called him out for one element in the film, which the filmmaker has admitted to in the past.

Last week, Amazon made its first-ever pitch to advertisers at the annual upfronts in New York; for Netflix, it was the first it’s done in person. The streamers also pitched a whole new kind of TV show: movies.
When ad-supported tiers came to platforms like Netflix and Disney+ last year, streamers joined the annual network ritual of presenting their slates to media buyers. However, this was the first time that films entered the spotlight.
Budget-minded streaming subscribers are familar with film and TV pre-rolls as well as the ads that may drop between or during TV episodes. So far, movies and movie lovers have been spared the dreaded mid-roll — the advertisement that shows up during a movie, where it was never meant to be.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be. Brad Adgate, a media consultant and the former research director at Horizon Media, believes advertisers would jump...

It does not take a lot for Steven Spielberg to shine. His exceptional filmography speaks volumes on its own. The talent imbibed in one soul is enough to account for a great amount of masterpieces in the Hollywood industry. It takes understanding and skill to create stories the way he does. He has worked on various adaptations and mastered almost all of them perfectly.

One of the adaptations he made was of Alice Walker’s renowned novel The Color Purple. While the movie found great critical acclaim, having been nominated for 11 Oscars, there was a certain set of audience that wasn’t too fond of the adaptation. Walker’s novel told stories of a woman who was in pain of different kinds. She spoke for many people all at once, in a way similar to Maya Angelou.

Nathalie Emmanuel’s first trip to the Cannes Film Festival was certainly a memorable one.
The “Fast and Furious” franchise star and “Game of Thrones” alum knows what it’s like to be in the spotlight, but Cannes is unique. First, consider the fact that she’s the leading lady in legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s longtime passion project “Megalopolis,” which made its world premiere at the festival. Then, there’s the reality of ascending the famed red steps to the Palais des Festivals.
“This whole experience has been like nothing I’ve ever had before,” Emmanuel told Variety the next day. “That moment was so much bigger and so much grander — I just had no concept of how crazy it would be, how exciting it would be, how many people there would be. … It was quite overwhelming, but really exciting and felt like a real celebration.”

Steven Spielberg had a great run in the 80s and 90s churning out blockbusters while also venturing into compelling dramas. He entertained audiences with the Indiana Jones franchise that has since become a significant part of pop culture and also made audiences cry with emotionally driven films such as Empire of the Sun and The Color Purple.
George Lucas helped in the editing process of Jurassic Park for Steven Spielberg
The 90s saw some of the best works from the director and Spielberg managed to churn out two of the best films of the 90s in the same year Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List (both 1993). Star Wars creator George Lucas was instrumental in making that possible but when it came to Lucas needing help from Spielberg, the maverick turned it down for a very logical reason.

You know that feeling of watching someone ice skate for the first time? Or when a little kid finally tries riding their bicycle without training wheels? That's sort of the feeling I get watching Steven Spielberg's movie adaptation of "The Color Purple."
Make no mistake: Spielberg's 1985 film version of Alice Walker's 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, which he directed from a script by his eventual "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" co-writer Menno Meyjes, is quite lovely to look at; it's a Spielberg picture so that much goes without saying. Whoopi Goldberg is similarly splendid as the grown-up Celie Harris-Johnson, a queer Black woman living in early 20th-century Georgia who endures horrific abuse at the hands of the men in her life yet finds kindness, support, and love from the Black women around her.
It's not that Spielberg had never tackled a "serious" adult movie before that,...

Looking back at the legendary Queen of Rock and Roll, and Grammy winner Tina Turner’s career, we can certainly agree that the late icon not only dominated the music industry but also portrayed her versatility in a few critically acclaimed projects. However, despite her serious acting aspirations, Turner felt limited by opportunities for Black women as well as the type of roles she was being offered.

Addressing how she was offered a leading role in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple, featuring Whoopi Goldberg, who later scored an Academy Award nomination for her role, Tina Turner mentioned rejecting the part. However, in a surprising turn of events, the late legend noted accepting George Miller’s Mad Max sequel, Beyond Thunderdome.

Spielberg already knew he was going to direct a world war two movie before he did Saving Private Ryan. He just didn’t know what movie that was gonna be before the Tom Hanks war film. He was soon sent the film’s script by a screenwriter, and found the war movie he wanted to do.

Nathalie Emmanuel knows all about not talking about the projects she’s in. Seven years on “Game of Thrones” as the fan-favorite Missandei gave the Brit an instant lesson on the dangers of spoiling a show where much of its popularity rested on an endless supply of (mostly bloody) shocks and surprises.
But Emmanuel’s now unable to talk about something very different, and for very different reasons.
“Megalopolis” is without doubt among the most anticipated movies of the year. The hugely ambitious magnum opus — and potential final feature — from master filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is a project he’s been trying to get off the ground since the 1980s. But it’s also a film shrouded in mystery and intrigue, self-financed to the tune of $120 million and with ongoing speculation over who might pick up the not inconsiderable tab to release it. We're not in Kansas any more...
Universal Pictures has pulled back the curtain on Jon M. Chu's big-screen adaptation of Broadway hit, Wicked, with an extended trailer, and if you're not too familiar with the story, don't worry - this teaser tells you everything you need to know.
We're used to trailers giving a bit too much away at this stage, but this really takes the flying monkey!
The movie, which is set to hit theaters on November 27, will tell the story of how a shy green-skinned woman named Elphaba becomes a cackling villain with an aversion to water we first met in The Wizard of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, who will ultimately become the "Wicked Witch of the West," while pop megastar Ariana Grande will play Glinda, aka "Good Witch of the East."
It's probably not a major to spoiler to note that their friendship doesn't last!

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star in director Jon M Chu’s new musical adaptation. Take a look at the new Wicked trailer.
Jon M. Chu’s Wicked is one of this year’s most awaited film musicals. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Chu’s film is adapted from the hugely popular, and rather good, stage musical. Recently, Chu also confirmed that the film would use live vocals, which isn’t surprising as both Grande and Erivo have pretty good pipes for this sort of thing.
The story proved too big for a single film, so Chu and writer Winnie Holtzman have divided it into two parts. We assume the first part will adapt the musical’s first act while Wicked Part Two will do justice to the second act, but don’t quote us on that.
A new trailer has just landed online as well, albeit not on a broomstick.

Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the greatest voices in filmmaking today. Since the ’70s, he has proven himself to be a very competent director who can dabble in any filmmaking genre with ease. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple, etc. are examples of his complete mastery over varied genres.
Melinda Dillon and Cary Guffey in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Spielberg tasted success early in his career with Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. When he decided to put a comedic spin on the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, many, including John Wayne, warned him that it would backfire on him. The underwhelming reception of the film led to a big realization of the mistakes that he made.

Cynthia Erivo attended her first Met Gala in 2017.
“Walking on the Met Gala carpet that year was really fucking nerve-wracking,” she told me Sunday night at UTA’s pre-Met party at Nubeluz at the Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad. “I had just finished ‘The Color Purple’ [on Broadway]. I went with Coach.
“I was new so I didn’t know what to expect,” she continued. “It’s that weird thing where I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m supposed to be here.’ It was a lot of imposter syndrome.”
Monday’s gala will mark Erivo’s sixth time in attendance.
Asked to describe this year’s look, Erivo teased, “It’s almost like I have run through a garden and things have fallen on me.” Her signature long nails were already in place on Sunday—they’re an earthy palette and decorated with small flowers and foliage.
