On the heels of star-making roles in films like “Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard” and “Secret Reunion,” Gang Dong-won has been one of the most prominent star actors in South Korean cinema which is the case with his turn in the role of Dr. Cheon in director Kim Seong-sik’s latest effort. Based on Fresh and Kim Hong-tae’s popular webtoon “Possessed” and serving as the opening chapter for its franchise, WellGo USA releases the new genre effort in theaters October 6.
Arriving in a small village, Dr. Cheon (Gang Dong-won) and his technical assistant Inbae (Lee Dong-hwi) are approached by Yoo-kyung (Esom), a young woman asking him to use his fabled Shamanistic powers to help her family. While initially turned off by her serious nature, the monetary payment brings them together to check out the requested case looking at the supposed possession of her younger sister where they live inside their house.

Woochi: The Demon Slayer begins very mythically in 1509 with a trio of Taoist wizards (a Korean three stooges) accidentally releasing an army of shape-shifting goblins, losing the magic flute that can seal them away, and generally ruining the life of the Archgod who’d just spent 3000 days sealing the goblins away.
Gang Dong-Won plays the title character of Jeon Woo Chi whose quest is to become the most powerful wizard in Korea, no matter if he upsets his master or the King. Woochi is aided in his adventures by dog turned human (and sometimes horse) Chorangyi, played with great comedic skills by Yoo Hae-Jin. Woochi ends stumbling upon the prophetic pipe and through the manipulations of demon hunting wizard Hwadam, he and his dog end up sealed within scrolls for 500 years.

Korea’s most bankable star, Kim Yoon-seok made his stage debut in 1988 with A Streetcar Named Desire. His theater background led him to be cast in minor roles on film and television. One of the first of which was a supporting part as a rural cop chasing down a scammer in director Choi Dong-hoon’s 2004 film The Big Swindle. After several years of minor roles, his breakthrough role came as a ruthless gambler with a scarred face and charismatic swagger in Tazza: The High Rollers (2006). He then played as a pimp and ex-cop on the trail of a prostitute murdering serial killer—played by Ha Jung-woo—in The Chaser (2008) directed by Na Hong-jin that brought him stardom and acting awards.
He has since become an acclaimed leading actor in Korean cinema, in films such as Running Turtle (2009), The Yellow Sea (2010), Punch (2011), and The Thieves (2012).

It's not often you get a solid genre crossover movie. While Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright have made a (wildly entertaining) hobby out of it, it's otherwise an uncommon occurrence. Therefore it's something of a pleasure for us to introduce to you Gordon Chan's The Four, which crosses espionage with superheroes, a counterfeiting scandal, kung fu, and zombies. If it seems a bit eclectic, that's because it is, but wonderfully so. The Four stars Deng Chao, Liu Yi Fei, Collin Chou, Ronald Cheng, and Anthony Wong, and it's all kinds of crazy. If you enjoy flicks like Woochi: The Demon Slayer or Kung Fu Hustle, The Four will be right up your alley.
And if you want a copy, you're in luck as we're giving three away on Blu-ray. To find out how you can win, just keep reading.

The title Woochi: The Demon Slayer denotes a far more serious tone than Dong-Hoon Choi's fantastical action comedy actually employs, and in the end that dissonance works in its favor. Had Choi's film taken itself too seriously, it would have invited a higher level of criticism upon itself to gauge the soundness of its narrative, the quality of its special effects, and the innovation of its fight choreography -- none of which are particularly notable on their own. What sets Woochi apart and makes it memorable is the unexpected silliness that wears down your resistance until you can't help but chuckle at some of the creative and ridiculous things it mixes into a epoch-spanning tale of mystics, Tao masters, demons, and magic that it grounds halfway through by bringing it into the 21st century. It might not be an excellent film, but it's a lot of fun once you...

Based on popular Korean folk tales, 2009’s “Woochi the Demon Slayer (Aka “Jean Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard”) finally has a domestic Blu-ray release, courtesy of the fine folks at Shout! Factory. And who doesn’t want to sit in the comfort of their own home and watch giant rat monsters scurry up walls and do battle with a scatterbrained wizard and his sidekick that used to be a dog? If that doesn’t sound like a good time to you, then this probably isn’t the movie for you. However, if that sounds like a total blast, then by all means, give “Woochi: The Demon Slayer” a shot. A sweeping fantasy that spans eons is a little out of line for director Choi Dong-hoon, who is most known for crime films like “The Big Swindle” and “Tazza: The High Rollers.” But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of action to suck on in “Woochi,...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Woochi: The Demon Slayer Woochi is a wannabe wizard whose antics reveal him to be an egotistical, womanizing ass, but while he plays at being an all powerful magician his over confidence leads to a fight he can’t win. Evil creatures and competing wizards defeat him, frame him for murder and trap him in a picture, but he’s reluctantly released 500 years later when the creatures show up in modern day Seoul. He’s the city’s best hope, but he’s also pretty busy ogling the short-skirted women of today’s Korea.. This Korean blockbuster is a fun mix of martial arts action and laughs, and that’s exactly what should be expected from the writer/director of The Thieves and Tazza: The High Rollers. It runs a little long and some of...

Cinelinx takes a swing at the new Woochi: The Demon Slayer Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A childish Korean wizard is trapped in a magic scroll for hundreds of years, only to be released into modern-day Korea to hunt down evil creatures that threaten the city.
The Delivery
Korean cinema can be a hit-or-miss proposition for American audiences. Sure, their horror films are quite good, even if they are obsessed with long black hair being scary for some reason. Their wire-fu films, however, don't always work. Woochi, which was a hit in 2009 for Korean audiences, takes an original approach on the wire-fu formula by mixing in fantasy elements and a modern day setting. It isn't a great film by any means, but it is a goofy, entertaining adventure that is far better than the usual summer fare we have to muddle through.
Gang Dong-Won plays Woochi with plenty of character and charisma that transcends the language barrier.

It blew the roof off Korean box office records back in 2009, and now Choi Dong-hoon’s superb eye candy of a big budget fantasy-action epic ‘Jeon woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard’ is heading for a U.S bow on DVD as ‘Woochi: The Demon Slayer,’ via new kids on the Asian movie distributor block….Shout! Factory. If you’ve not seen it before there’s a trailer link below, but be warned it’s got a ridiculously amount of action (and its got plenty) spoilers. Woochi goes on sale April 9th. Synopsis: Jeon Woo-chi, an undisciplined, womanizing wizard unjustly accused of the death of his master, is trapped inside an ancient scroll until he is set free in 2009 by the wizards that imprisoned him to help fight against evil Demons that have taken over present-day Korea. The only problem is that Woo-chi is more interested in his new modern home – and...

Director Dong-hoon Choi’s (Woochi, The Big Swindle,’ ‘Tazza: High Rollers’) Korean box office annihilating crime caper The Thieves remains the highest-grossing movie in Korea to date, and its heading to a theatre near-ish (as of course this is only a limited release) to you, next week. Best Of Korean Cinema is a new fortnightly article looking at the diverse world of the Korean New Wave. We’ll be looking at everything from romance to K-Horror and eccentricities to the revenge thriller that has become synonymous with the countries international reputation. In this first edition, we shall be looking back at a striking directorial debut which is an entity unto itself, Save the Green Planet.
Save The Green Planet
Directed by Joon-Hwan
2003, Korean
With only a writing credit on the 1999 film Phantom: The Submarine, to his name, Joon-Hwan made his directorial debut in 2003. The resulting film, Save the Green Planet is a tricky beast to pin down, in that it almost entirely evades classification. It incorporates qualities from sci-fi, action, comedy, police procedural, torture, and horror. The basic sets up sees Byung-Gu (Ha-Kyun Shin) kidnap the CEO of a big corporation, because Byung-Gu believes company head Kang...

To summarise the plot of Woochi: The Demon Slayer in anything approaching a succinct style is incredibly difficult. At just over two hours, and a little flabby at that, Woochi manages to contain enough plot for a number of blockbuster fantasy action adventures rather than just one. Beginning far, far in the past the film sets up the central character of Jeon Woo-chi (Dong-won Kang), an arrogant and mischievous wizard, and a number of auxiliary characters before flying forwards in time to a point where a number of them are still alive whilst a couple have been transported via magical paintings. That’s just scratching the surface though as there are also the villainous animal demons/goblins, an ultimately villainous character (who shall not be revealed here), three wizards in religious ‘disguise’, a dog-in-human skin sidekick, an intertemporal love interest, a film within the film and so, so much more.

It blew the lid off Korean box office records back in 2009, and now Choi Dong-hoon’s big budget fantasy epic Jeon woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard is heading for a UK bow on DVD via Cine Asia, under the handle ‘Woochi: The Demon Slayer.’ As with most of their catalogue, CA has gone to the extra trouble of releasing the movie in a 2 disc special edition, with a fair few nifty extras. Nice. Woochi goes on sale April 25. Synopsis: When a dark lord obtains the secret to unimaginable power, an elite army of shape-shifting goblins threatens to destroy the world, as we know it. However, just when all seems to be lost, a great warrior-wizard, named Woo-chi, travels through time to fight for the future of all mankind…...
