Attention fans of weird and cult cinema here in Canada. Video Services Corp (Vsc) has inked a three year deal with Synapse Films to distribute their films on all platforms. Distro starts this February with Synapse's release of the Canadian zombie indie flick Reel Zombies. Vsc will also go through Synapse's back catalog as well. Until now Synapse releases were available in in some stores, but at import prices, which sucked large. Synapse Films is happy to be partnering with Vsc, to finally be able to bring our titles to Canadians in a timely and inexpensive manner," declared Jerry Chandler, CEO of Synapse Films. ...

The film stars Michael Masters, David J. Francis, Stephen Papadimitriou, and Sam Hall.
Synopsis
Independent underground filmmakers Mike Masters and David J. Francis (playing themselves) are eager to complete the third film in their Zombie Night film trilogy, a series of rather unsuccessful low-budget, shot-on-video gorefests. The problem, however, is a recent zombie apocalypse has taken over the world since their series began. The dead are rising from their graves and eating the living… for real this time! Masters and Francis embark on the production of their newest masterpiece anyway, only to discover shooting in a post-apocalyptic world offers many unforeseen challenges. Instead of giving up, they...

Synapse Films have officially announced a February release for Reel Zombies, an independent zombie mockumentary:
“Independent underground filmmakers Mike Masters and David J. Instead of giving up, they decide to capitalize on the cannibalistic catastrophe. No need for latex and fake blood when there’s an entire world of flesh eating undead to add realism to their film, and help save money on special effects costs!

Synapse Films’ Don May Jr. gave Fango the scoop that the company just acquired Lamberto Bava’s Demons and Demons 2 and Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Phenomena. “We’ll be releasing Blu-rays and DVDs of all four in 2013,” he tells us. “We’re getting better hi-def masters of Tenebrae and Phenomena, and we’re fixing the timing and color errors that were in the previous Blu-rays of the Demons films. Right now, Calum Waddell and High Rising Productions are working on supplements for Demons and Demons 2. They’re putting together all kinds of stuff for us on those two, with the participation of Simon Boswell, Alan Jones, Federico Zampaglione and Roy Bava, and many more to be announced. We haven’t started on the Tenebrae and Phenomena extras yet.” Look for more details on these releases (for which the images below do not necessarily represent the cover art) soon.

Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

Manchester’s Grimm Up North Festival 2010 rolls out for its second year and runs from Thursday 28th October to 31st October. This year’s line-up has been announced today at a press launch at Odder Bar (which I once got thrown out of as a drunken student back in the day when it was Odd Bar).
There’s really something for everybody, including the absolutely brilliant giallo homage Amer (my favourite film of the year) and the Josie Ho slasher flick Dream Home – which really is a ‘cutting’ satire!
Also playing is cannibal flick We Are What We Are, a movie that brings a whole new meaning to ‘going for a Mexican’ and a new digital print of Dario Argento’s masterpiece Profondo Rosso (Deep Red).
So if you want to wing your way up to the brilliant city of Manchester for four days of horror cinema deluxe, why not?...

The film follows one girl's ascent into womanhood in three parts. In the first she is a child, exploring her deepest, darkest fears, and in the second her burgeoning teenage sexuality is the central focus. For the final act we...

Year 2 of Manchester, England's premier horror film festival, Grimm Up North, is taking place Halloween weekend, 28th-31st October 2010, and the first four films have been officially confirmed along with a handful of the event's seminar guests.
For months the folks behind Grimmfest have been sifting through the latest in genre cinema to bring the best horror and sci-fi to this year's festival, and it looks like they're off to a damn fine start! Here's a small sample of what fest-goers have in store:
Reel Zombies: The film follows a group of independent filmmakers as they attempt to create a third entry in their series of 'Zombie Night' movies. This time, though, they'll be using the real live undead that have taken over much of the world. With a documentary team following them, the crew set out to create a masterpiece but discover shooting in a post-apocalyptic world often...

While everyone knows Austin as the "Live Music Capital of the World" and for its SXSW festival, few people know this: Just down the road in San Antonio, independent film is Big, and there are indie filmmakers everywhere putting out quality entertainment for those who know where to look. This past weekend, August 27-30, the second annual Horrific Film Fest showcased a lot of that talent and allowed some of those filmmakers to meet a few horror movie icons and learn a few things from them as well.
Here's a brief rundown of what went on: Thursday night the festival kicked off at 6pm with live local bands in a show that ran until midnight. Headlining the show were Cursor, Ashley Ford, and the Saturday Night Shockers. The whole thing was emceed by Ari "First Jason" Lehman. Midnight rolled around, and San Antonio's After Dark Paranormal Research took a few...

There have been countless grassroots undead movies in the last couple of decades, and more than a few indie flicks that applied the This Is Spinal Tap mockumentary approach to the horror genre. So it’s a nice surprise that Reel Zombies, one of several homegrown Canadian indies to screen at Montreal’s Fantasia festival, combines the two subgenres in ways that are fresh and funny.
Directors David J. Francis and Mike Masters also star as themselves, the director and producer respectively of Zombie Night, which is described on screen as one of the worst movies ever made. (In truth, it’s among the better of the endless attempts to recreate the George A. Romero mythos on a nothing budget.) They followed it up with Zombie Night 2, and this feature is presented as a documentary following Francis as he decides to create a third entry to round out the trilogy,...
