Don't create unnecessary twists!
mathias_wietgrefe29 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As German viewer I don't understand why this episode is criticized as political. It's the current reality in the US and I think it's great that the show picks up latest events and is set in the real world! (By the way: all of Rendall's actions and decisions also make perfect sense to me!)

However, the twist at the end feels absolutely unnecessary. Why are they doing that? This (might) just create tons of logical mistakes...

Anyway: Sterling K. Brown's performance is awesome! (But that's nothing new, is it?)

True reflection of the year we are in and all the feelings we experienced. The duality of America....love goes on, people change...or do they? We fight on. Cue all the racists that will say "too political, too racial" which really equals too real!

Watching shows take us away from reality
tqnnqsg20 March 2021
This episode was a little exhausting as I watch in Spring 2021. 2020 was just a bad year globally. Please don't Chuck too much reality at us all at once. Please let us have Randal back on a happier footing he has so much to be grateful for and to have gratitude & for those of us who lost someone close to COVID-19 the show trying to show him in the real world was wide of the mark.

A very unnecessary plot
alyaastar23 September 2023
The plot at the end is SO RIDICULOUS !

It's like they just want to add some more stuffing to Randall's story, unnecessary tedious stuffing. I know I won't like any upcoming events related to this plot, it is unrealistic and very unnecessary.

I liked that they brought up the Corona events and the BLM issue, it's realistic. But, why would Randall be so emotionally manipulative like that ? Why did he make Kate feel guilty and cry when she absolutely has done nothing wrong ? She was trying to be supportive but of course that won't work with little poor oppressed Randall.

He has all the right to be sad of course, the whole world was sad for George Floyd and for all black people, but that was too much, it just felt wrong.

Bad start
mpafarias31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We all know that Hollywood is liberal, but c'mom man...

Randall, who always loved his family and it was very much loved by his parents, now realizes, at the age of 40, thanks to BLM, that all his unhappy is because his family was white. It doesn't matter all the loving involved before and that the show had told us, during 4 seasons, that his breakdows were because of his sense of control and the tried of replaceming Jack taking care of the family.

Kate starts apologizing to Randall just because he complained about being a black person in a white family, even if she doesn't understand why she is apologizing and even if she had always treated him with love and suport.

The producers replaced the Pearson family's life by the daily news.

Very bad start of season, I hope they forget the politics and start to remember what this show was all about...

Oh dear Kate how could you...!!
gilesstevens2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well it was about time wasn't it! That evil girl Kate had what was coming to her. Sorry Kate but all the racial issues in the world have clearly been all your fault. But thank the Lord for dear old Randall, the poor black kid that was stolen at birth and raised by such despicable racists. How tough his life has been with all that unnecessary parental love and nurturing. I mean what's that all about...!?! Thankfully Randall made sure he knew exactly who to blame for his own torture as well as all the suffering from career criminals at the hands of the evil US police force. Sorry Kate but you had it coming!!

Ok that's enough of my British sarcasm for one evening. Seriously it's such a shame that such a wonderfully written and acted TV show decided to bin its integrity in such a shameful insufferable self-righteous manner. In an instant all respect for the show disappeared faster than one of Kevin's girlfriends. Could I stomach what was likely to follow in upcoming episodes?? No, I bailed out at this point just the 70 odd episodes in. In truth I think I may have drowned in the upcoming smugness of it all. I do however wonder whether Randall had to deal with riots on the streets but somehow I seriously doubt it! I'm sure everything was peaceful! And was nasty Kate rightfully convicted of George Floyd's death and all other hate crimes? I guess I'll never know (apologies, looks like I had a little bit more sarcasm in me after all)....

Disappointing writing choices.
h_s_929223 November 2020
Oh, so incorporating the COVID-19 to remove physical affection from one of the most affectionate shows on TV right now? What were you guys thinking? We are living it, depressed by it and need a break and hope from it!

Randall's struggle as a black man was never neglected from the very first episode of this series but it used to make us aware and touched without this agenda the writers chose to adopt kind of ruined the best character on the show. Holding grudges against his "white family" and abandoning his "white therapist" all of a sudden just for being white? is that all healthy to you?

I can't describe how am I disappointed with this direction you guys decided to take this show.

So, suddenly....
Veritas9928 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Because of BLM, Randall decides to reject his white family and his white therapist? At 40 years old, he slaps them over their faces with the race issue and they can only feel small and guilty, apologizing, not knowing exactly for what,?

Disappointing episode
jerfguo29 October 2020
How Randall can blame everyone in his family so easily? It didn't make any sense. The Pearson takes care of him since he was a baby, and they have to take responsibility for his identity crisis because they're white? Ridiculous and disappointing plots !!!

It's not political, it's the ending that's the problem.
ericanaess25 April 2021
Apparently there are only 2 reviewers with any darn sense. Just because the show takes up the reality of BLM, doesn't make it "political". And it fits perfectly well into the plot line for Randall all along where he's struggled with being in a trans-racial family.

He's not hating his family or rejecting them like some are saying just because he calls Kate out on it. He dropped everything like he always does and ran over to the cabin to help with his mom. He clearly loves them. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a challenge for him to grow up black in a mostly white world where that part of him was mostly ignored and, in the case of William, purposely hidden from him. And the fact that he grew up more privileged, just makes him more conflicted about it. If you can't understand any of this then you obviously have some self-reflection to do.

BUT what is completely ridiculous is the ending. NO. Just no. This is clearly some new stupid thing they've come up with that was never originally in the plan and can in no way be realistic. No matter how that situation plays out, I can't see a way for it to make any logical sense. The whole thing with Nick was already pushing it, but THIS?! No, this is like daytime soap opera territory.

Might have jumped the shark.
tom24601-84-41832429 October 2020
First I have to say that some peoples reaction to this episode is very telling. Accusing a show of being political because it shows a black family reacting to what's going on in the world is ridiculous. What these people really want is for Randall to just be black on the surface but white in all other ways. They want to pretend racism doesn't exist and that poc aren't forced to confront it on a regular basis. Dealing with racism and having an emotional reaction to what's going on in the world is simply a realistic depiction of what black families are dealing with and it's not political at all. So why did I give the episode 5 stars. Purely based off the ending. It was an unnecessary and unrealistic twist and just might be where this series jumped the shark. All plot developments coming from this twist are going to be tedious and contrived and generally reduce the quality of the show. That's my opinion anyway.

HATED IT
debb-349183 November 2020
This is always been my number one favorite show ever but this double episode was horrible. We've already lived through all the BS that they showed in this and it was disappointing to have to relive it again. If it continues like this I'll just stop watching it.

We know Hollywood is liberal but it's getting ridiculous
Akodi28 October 2020
Randall the oppressed millionaire blames his loving family for the wrongs in society because they are a different colour than him. I'm sure there's a word for that and it ends in "ist"

If the end of this episode is a gauge of how this series is going to progress then it puts J.R. in Dallas to shame.

Might have well all been a dream, if that's possible when you are so woke.

It's one thing to touch on covid but it felt so forced. Constantly talking about how they quarantined properly, etc...it was weird and it played like an ad to remind us to social distance and wear masks.

Why she is asking him forgiveness when she did nothing? A white person does not speak for all the white people and a black guy does not talk for all the black guys. It is ridiculous. This is how they try to divide us.

This is Us gets political and racial
mnsullo1728 October 2020
After watching TIU for 5 years I think it's time to bail. Much like major sports, the TIU crew had to get racial and political. Nobody tunes in to see this. This is an escape for people. When you don't offer that you fail. Good going TIU. Sad.

elizabethmwright22 February 2021
Listen, I know these things go on in the world. But, I watch shows to get away from that. I don't want to see it where I'm trying to decompress from everything going on. This is why we have such high stress because there is NO escape from it.

Disappointing
jdbarraganm17 January 2021
So sorry to watch how a great show becomes political. It is a huge misunderstanding to take a racism view into the show with no sense, no context and by creating an absurd generalization. Unnecessary. As Morgan Freeman said: If you want to stop racism, stop talk about it. Do not differentiate people by the color of their skin. We are all equal.

dbdortas12 November 2020
Too much political agenda. The worst part of it is that the way it has been doing in season 5. Its not the Randall that we saw in first 4 seasons. The plost twist in the final scene of this episode is also unreal and i really disliked it.

Wow make your sister cry for nothing she did
hazem_dubosh20 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It is so stupid to add the BLM dimension to the series. First of all its American politics and this show is for a global audience. Secondly it is so inaccurate to depict Randal as a victim of racism where it is obvious from what we have seen throughout his life that he has never suffered. Lastly, i dont think Covid is a political issue, but adding it is uneccessary.

COVID in LALA Land
rkopek31 October 2020
Most people were not able to visit with family, take a walk to get a cake, sit in a coffee shop, some still can't almost 8 months later. Put the masks on for PC but not consistant. Had boyfriend coming over when many of us couldn't see grandkids. Really off putting and nothing at all like most of us had to live. The rest of it overblown "reality"and biased. No doubt what political affiliation writer has.

Appreciate trying to tell stories about current issues, but this is just a checklist of all (and cliche'd) things we are seeing, making the characters go way out of character. Seems they're all going through puberty
