A film with a few good premises and lines, worthwhile acting, but wasn't executed as well as it could have been
kevin_robbins11 August 2023
Manfish (2022) is a United Kingdom horror comedy that was recently added to Shudder. The storyline follows a down on his luck island man whose older brother bosses him around and his wife cheats on him...with his older brother. One day he comes across a manfish washed up on shore and unconscious. His wife helps him bring the Manfish home in hopes of selling it for a lot of money. As the man becomes friends with the Manfish he starts doubting the plan...

This picture is written and directed by Marc Coleman, in his directorial debut, and stars Dean Kilbey (A Song from the Dark), Emma Stannard, Jon Campling (The Northman) and Liam Noble (National Treasures).

The storyline actually reminded me a little of The Lighthouse, if they went too far with some of the scenarios. The concept had some potential and the writing isn't awful. The Manfish costume reminded me of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The kills had great blood splatter but could have used more gore. There's some kissing scenes in this that are hard to watch. The ending was disappointing and had me rolling my eyes. This was a frustrating picture that made me wonder why I gave it a shot when it was finally over.

Overall, this is a film with a few good premises and lines, worthwhile acting, but wasn't executed as well as it could have been. I would score this a 3/10 and recommend skipping it.

Man meets...Manfish
apollocreed-2766719 February 2023
Right from the start, I was drawn into the world of the characters; their hopes; their struggles; their desperation. It's portrayal of Canvey Island is real and authentic, which is perfectly contrasted by the strange and obscure events that come to unfold. Even though the story centres around the relationship between a simple bloke and a manfish, I still felt grounded in reality and convinced that something like this could actually happen! Dean Kilbey is superb as Terry, alongside the equally impressive Emma Standard as Tracy. By the end of the film, I felt genuinely moved. Well worth a watch if you are looking for something fun and off the beaten track.

They went for weird, and they delivered.

What was so intriguing for me that I ended up deciding to watch this film on a whim?

It wasn't the ratings. I admit, I'm a little dependent on IMDB ratings when it comes to horror movies, or even comedy horrors. I usually draw the line at an even 5.0 rating.

It wasn't the premise. I was like "oh great. Just what we needed. A gay version of 'The Shape of Water.'"

No, what intrigued me, was the contrast between the overall rating (5.2 stars at this time) and the average ratings from those who actually took the time to leave a review (8.27 stars at the current time).

I've found that most horrors (and comedy-horrors even), have a diverse range of reviews, even when there's only a handful. But I got the feeling that maybe, this was a hidden gem worth watching, when I saw that all but one reviewer gave it at least an 8. So I gave it a go.

And I'm glad I did. It's quirky and fun, and you gotta appreciate the British humor. I love the little things. For example: take the opening scene. In any given big production film, when the fisherman got boinked on the head by the bottle, they would have had a foley artist throw in some exaggerated sound effect. But this film keeps it real. There's barely a sound, which in some way amplifies the comedy.

And as an American, I gotta say, hats off to the English, their slang, multiple levels of dialects, and quick witted insults will forever be the epitome of entertainment for me. There are also some interesting and extremely subtle jokes hidden in the dialogue. Lines that make you go "wait....what? Did he just say what I fought 'e said?" (I'm trying to write it out with a cockney accent). And there are so many wonderfully random moments. Like, why do things seemingly fly out of nowhere to hit the characters? It's so Monty Python-esque.

Getting to the premise, the movie's about a rather pathetic and yet sympathetic simpleton named Terry, who is depressed and wishes for a better life. He makes the discovery of a lifetime, and things get weird and silly right quick. It loses itself from time to time, the original charm seemingly forgotten in favor of furthering the plot. But it's weird enough, and quirky enough, to remain interesting.

I wouldn't consider it comedy-horror, let alone horror. It's mostly just weird, comical, and a bit sad. Oh and weird. Did I mention weird? Because it's weird. But, strangely enough, it's charming and funny at the same time. Take the "human toast" monologue for example. It's ridiculous. But touching. In a strange way. It could have been a lot more though. And it lost itself too often. Still an enjoyable flick for something different.

Wonderful
sphynxicornwax1 November 2023
Absolutely wonderful film. Manfish kept us guessing the entire time we watched and the twists and turns were funny and unexpected. The film caught us of guard and laughing the whole way through.

The acting was superb, having grown up around Essex and Canvey their portrayal was spot on.

Manfish was beautifully shot and edited and for the most part felt like it had a high production value.

We're very much looking forward to what the team have planned in the future and will eagerly await further projects

Well done to all. Would highly recommend Manfish to those who want an easy going horror comedy to watch.

A sure cult classic! Brittish humour at its finest!
naomirose-859921 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to start with saying as a big fan of B movies this was one of the best I've watched all year.

The cinematography is excellent, the characters are believable and the humour is perfectly timed.

Our whole watching party was laughing at the parts we were meant to laugh at, with several cheers and whoops for Terry and Boo's for Tracy, although it should be mentioned she is the stand out character in this film. She really makes you hate the character she plays so well. Despite the lower budget of the film, the actors all deliver a greater standard than most other horror comedy genre films I've seen. It's rare to actually root for a character the way we did for Terry in a horror film. We laughed several times loudly during the showing and will be repeating "mum toast" for months to come.

Everything about this film is Brittish humour summed up, perfectly dry and crude and well timed. We loved the gore and stunts included and the soundtrack was excellent. It's a perfect description of lower class Brittish culture down to the settings, language and styling of each character.

This film shouldn't be ignored and could easily make way to being a cult classic.

A uk classic pulled from the depths of canvey seaside
dd-3430610 April 2023
I went into watching this not knowing what to expect as a friend of mine just said I had to watch it.

I'm so pleased I did as it is such a great film. The writing is spot on and a lot funnier then I thought it would be and the cast and crew do an amazing performance of making it feel more then a indie film.

The mask used for the manfish creature is brilliant. And the creatures performance is like a fishy mr bean. Just a few movements to express himself but funny to watch.

Definitely give this film ago. I don't want to talk about scenes and spoil it so just give it ago. I can't wait to see what the cast and crew get up to in the future.

The next cult classic
tequila-442129 March 2023
What a wild ride, you feel for Terry player by the talented Dean Kilbey as he's downtrodden by his dastardly brother and girlfriend, until his new beach discovery comes to change his life forever! Great original story, fantastic acting and wonderful cinematography. Matty Noble who plays the creature expresses so much without any words and you find yourself rooting for him and Terry! This is truly one to watch , it's funny , it's moving and ultimately a great laugh , highly recommend this awesome movie ! And you will never look at a seashell jewellery box the same again ! A creature feature you will love.

Well Worth the wait
emmaturner-9994821 February 2023
I have eagerly awaited the release of 'Manfish' for some time now. This film is right up my street. Great cinematography, subtle humour, brilliantly cast, an underdog story with a fantastic story line & great soundtrack.

I still recall funny lines and scenes, days after watching it, as do the others who watched it with me. Dean Kilbey is particularly outstanding with his performance. His portrayal of the character Terry is mesmerising. Emma Stannard plays a blinding role too with a killer performance. I definitely recommend that others watch it, especially if they like a good underdog story and a belly laugh.

An overall great watch, which was well worth the wait.

Loved every single second
lisajadecousins16 August 2023
I randomly watched Manfish on Shudder about a week ago, and I absolutely loved it. I was completely engaged from the first minute to the last. I loved the storytelling, the acting... even the low budget prosthetics!

It had everything I look for in a film and have found myself thinking about it quite a lot since watching. It makes me smile now just thinking about it. I really hope they make a sequel, I don't want it to be over.

Definitely not for fans of big budget blockbusters, but if you enjoy watching something fantastically odd and low budget, this film is for you.

I can't wait to see what Marc Coleman does next!

Quirky and bizarre seaside story
gronner28 August 2023
What an underrated gem of a film!

You may be put off by the idea of a horror, but this is not that. It's weird and unpredictable and delightful and depressing and uplifting, all at the same time!

Excellent characters, they were all so vivid and performed brilliantly.

This is set in a part of the UK that doesn't really get much attention, and it makes you want to grab a bucket and spade and head down to the Essex shoreline for an adventure.

I don't want to spoil anything but I will probably be thinking about what I just watched for a LONG time!

It just goes to show that you don't need a billion dollars to make an entertaining movie, you just need talent and creativity.

A GREAT COMEDY HORROR!
jaykilbey8 May 2023
A great comedy horror with some great actors! Its funny, sad and crude all at the same time which kept me occupied the whole way through the movie. It has a really nice raw feel to it and some of the lines in this movie really made me laugh to the point where I keep thinking about them! Dean Kilbey plays the role of Terry (who is a very calm and placid character) perfectly and the supporting actors roles are pretty much the opposite to Terry which gives a really strong contrast which works really well. A great job. Well casted, well written and well worth the watch! I highly recommend this movie..

This fantastic fishy love 'tail' is sure to become a cult classic!
joarber-2719521 May 2023
ManFish draws you in from the start, beautifully shot, and fantastically acted by an extremely talented cast, Dean Kilbey and Emma Standard are both outstanding as Terry and Tracy! Set in Canvey island, Terry an ordinary man, in a seemingly loveless marriage and a hopeless situation, is constantly put upon by his wife and older brother until something quite extraordinary happens in this quiet seaside town that changes everything. As the story unfolds you become more and more gripped. A great fusion of comedy and pathos, you genuinely empathise with Terry and ManFish, this quirky funny love story is a must see!

Brilliant and Funny!!
icocleric6 August 2023
I didn't know what to expect when watching this, I watched it on a whim. But I can easily see this becoming a cult classic. It's sooo good. The humour really tickled me. The laughs just keep coming right up to the end too, it's hilarious. I love horror comedy, and this was a strong example.

All the actors are really strong, and sell it. Right down to the mannerisms.

I thought the creature design could have been better, but I love how expressive they managed to be with that mask. The story is simple between a man and his man fish, but honestly it's just fun. You can really tell so much about this film was intentionally done.
