From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

The Last of Us emerged as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of 2023. Starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, the series set a new gold standard for video game adaptations. It also won Pascal his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but he failed to win in the category.
Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller in The Last of Us
However, one of the most gut-wrenchingly emotional scenes from the show’s sixth episode was improvised by Pascal. During a podcast appearance, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann peeled the cover on the emotional scene and Pascal’s improvisation while proving why he should have won an Emmy for the performance.

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
“God, I’m still so brutal at this,” the famously shy actor said on collecting the award, presented to him by “Killers of the Flower Moon” star and fellow recent awards circuit regular Lily Gladstone. “But being in this room is so special — being at home, with people that I love and admire amongst my fellow nominees and some of my favorite people.” Speaking backstage afterwards at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, he added: “It feels lovely being home with so many friends and colleagues.”

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first. We previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus, and now Deadline reports that Fahy is being joined in the cast by Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson. Deadline notes that child actor...

It never gets easier to look up the horrors of what real life humans are willing to perpetrate but some of them are harder than others. Looking into the purported Scottish myth that inspired The Hills Have Eyes for example is a whole heck of a lot easier to do than find out the absolutely abysmal crimes that were committed against a young girl in The Girl Next Door. Sadly, today’s movie The Snowtown Murders, a.k.a. Snowtown (watch it Here), is a lot closer to the sickening facts that happened to The Girl Next Door. While Australia already got our notorious spotlight shined on the fictional Mick Taylor who was a composite of two backpack killers, today we will look at the man who is known as the country’s worst serial killer and unpack what he did and who with. The movie is hard to watch...

Producer Jason Blum had said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, a failed attempt at a revival (that he described as “terrible”), back in 2021. He has been open about the fact that he feels there has been “enough already” when it comes to Paranormal Activity movies. But that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t continue in other ways. A few months back, we heard there’s a stage play in development, and now Variety has broken the news that a Paranormal Activity video game will be released in 2026!

Sylvester Stallone will be heading to Philadelphia again for The Epiphany, a new serial killer thriller: more here.
Continuing to keep himself busy and off the streets is Sylvester Stallone, who’s added another project to his current collection.
This one is called The Epiphany, and it’s a new serial killer thriller that’s going to bring Stallone back to the streets of Philadelphia. This time around, he’s not going to be player the heavyweight champion boxer of the world; instead, he’s going to be taking on the role of a police detective on the eve of retirement.
Said police detective sounds suitably grizzled and hard-nosed and – in the style of 1980s movies – he’s going to be teamed up with a young cop. Oh, and just as something a bit leftfield, a priest is being thrown into the mix as well. Perfect.

Today, Netflix released character descriptions along with some additional casting for their upcoming limited series, Zero Day.
Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind -- how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control?
And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?
As previously announced, Robert De Niro leads the cast as George Mullen, a massively popular but complicated former American President who is pulled from retirement to head a commission tasked with investigating a devastating global cyber-attack.
Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp, and McKinley Belcher III have been added to the cast, along with Gaby Hoffman, Clark Gregg, and Mark Ivan.
Bassett will play President Mitchell, a brilliant and perceptive political tactician with an allegiance to Mullen.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. Kin stars Clare Dunne (Herself), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones). It follows gang wars in Dublin. A boy is killed and his family embarks on a gangland war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. The Kinsellas are a local crime family, while the Cunningham cartel is a vast global organization.
“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications,” said Sue Deeks,...

It was a found-footage-stylized microbudget horror pic that spawned a six film theatrical franchise that grossed over $890M, now Paranormal Activity is set to be a play.
Deadline has confirmed that Simon Friend, the producer of the Broadway version of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, has taken the license on the Paramount/Blumhouse horror feature to set it up as a West End play.
Levi Holloway, the scribe of Broadway horror play Grey House, is currently writing Paranormal Activity for the stage.
Oren Peli wrote and directed the first pic, which centers around a family being haunted by a demon. The intrigue, much like the first Blair Witch Project, was the feeling that these horror movies could be real.
Friend’s stage adaptation productions include those of such pics The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards and three Tonys.

Linda Stevens inherited more than a house when her mother passed away; she also came into a wealth of fear. In the 1982 film Next of Kin, darkness closes in on Jackie Kerin’s character as she moves back to her rural hometown and honors her mother’s last wishes. Yet the longer she stays and digs into the past, the more Linda puts herself in danger. Death lurks around every corner of this Ozploitation classic.
There was a stretch of time where Australian horror was not commercially successful in its own homeland. The cinematic renaissance of the ‘70s and ‘80s (also known as the Australian New Wave) produced a number of homegrown horror films, yet the immediate public was not all that receptive. In fact, some of these films ended up being more beloved and victorious outside their birthplace. Next of Kin certainly did not find its audience until years later,...

Nearly eight months have gone by since we heard that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) was set to star in the sci-fi thriller Ursa Major with Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) – but now Deadline has revealed that Winstead had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Taking over the role that had previously been assigned to Winstead is Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003).
Twin brother directors Jonathan and Josh Baker are at the helm of Ursa Major, working from a screenplay written by Colleen O’Brien, Katie French, and Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville. That trio crafted the story of Charlie (Biel) and Natalie (Gomez), a mother and daughter pair of survivors trapped on a harsh Earth-like planet. As a deadly storm heads toward the planetoid, the duo avoids encroaching elements, crazed hunters, and more. While Natalie has always trusted her mother, she...

The bubble, that surge of cash that over the past decades helped bankroll an unprecedented boom in TV drama production, appears to have burst.
TV producers, gathered in Cannes this week for the MIPTV international television market, are pondering a future in which the cost of TV drama continues to spike while the primary sources of financing, namely broadcasters and online streamers, are slashing their commissioning budgets.
“The cost of an hour of television drama in the U.K. has gone from £1.5 million ($1.86 million) to £2.5 million ($3.1 million) per hour, and you can’t finance that out of the U.K. market,” said Christian Baute of Headline Pictures, producers of Amazon Prime’s Man in the High Castle and Ten Percent. “Traditionally, over the last seven years, we went to America [for financing], but that money is ebbing [because] the American market is a mess.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us,” including the season finale.]
Ask most fans of “The Last of Us” to describe what makes the game a standout achievement and you’ll probably get an explanation of the hospital scene. It’s not a coincidence that in the post-premiere trailer that gave viewers a peek at everything to come in “The Weeks Ahead,” Joel (Pedro Pascal) walking through the hospital was the last image teased.
In Sunday night’s season finale, Joel’s tragic choices play out once again. Faced with the option of leaving Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to die and offering the world a chance at a cure, Joel goes the opposite route. In a cloud of bullets and bodies, Joel swipes Ellie from the Fireflies’ makeshift hospital and takes her away. Marlene (Merle Dandridge) is left dead, along with a number of surgeons and nurses who thought they were fulfilling humanity’s last best hope.

This post contains major spoilers for the season finale of "The Last of Us."
Unlike the multitudes of apocalyptic father/daughter stories that "The Last of Us" pulls from for inspiration, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) have both made it out of their journey alive. As they abandon their car and take a hike into the woods, Joel is much more open than ever before, musing to Ellie about the similarities and differences between her and his late daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker.) Ellie, on the other hand, clearly has a lot on her mind that she's holding back.
After hiking up a mountain trail, Joel and Ellie look over the horizon. Here they are once again, returning to Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Maria's (Rutina Wesley) Jackson commune, ready to embrace it as their new home. Suddenly, Ellie stops Joel to talk to him about something. Haunted by all the loss she's experienced — Riley,...

The season finale of "The Last of Us" held a lot of surprises, the first of which was the opening flashback to Ellie's birth. We meet Ellie's mother Anna as she gives birth completely alone in an empty house in the middle of nowhere. Well, it turns out Anna's not completely alone, because one of the infected barges through the door while she's in labor. She manages to kill the creature, but not before getting bit. Anna gives birth to Ellie during the attack and quickly cuts the umbilical cord, so the infection doesn't have time to (completely) spread to her child. This is why Ellie's immune: she was briefly exposed to a very small dose of the virus at birth.
It's a fascinating choice for the finale, and not just because the show decided to cast Ashley Johnson (the voice of Ellie in the game) for the role of Anna.

Episode 6 of The Last of Us, “Kin,” introduces us to the community of Jackson, Wyoming and the almost normal lives that people are able to live in this post-apocalyptic world. In the video games that this HBO series is based on, we don’t get to see what Jackson looks like or how it works until The Last of Us Part II. When Joel reunites with Tommy in The Last of Us Part I, the community is still trying to get the hydroelectric dam to work, and therefore Tommy, Maria, and a few others are living there to focus on repairs.

There is no happy zombie story. No matter if it's a comedy, a romance or a musical, a zombie apocalypse destroys all chance and hope for a normal, let alone happy, existence. This is part of what makes the "The Last of Us" compelling, because you are seeing people desperately trying to cling onto their humanity, and their sense of community, even while fighting off mushroom zombies and hordes of violent humans.
Indeed, "The Last of Us," particularly the original video game, is a constant gut punch. At every chance, if there is a possibility of something good happening, the game immediately kicks it in the nuts and laughs at the very idea. It's why some of the best moments of the game are simply very small moments of relative tranquility, normalcy, and happiness.
The HBO show, however, takes that a step further.

From Linda Ronstadt to Depeche Mode, HBO's "The Last Of Us" knows a thing or two about emotionally devastating its audience with the perfect needle-drop. I have it on good authority (aka personal experience) that anyone who watches this show will never again make it through "Long Long Time" without needing a hefty kleenex box. Avoiding pain was never an option: Joel and Ellie live in a bleak world, where they've lost almost everyone, except for each other. Their journey across the country may have brought them closer together, but at least 50% of that boils down to shared trauma. Along the way, they've encountered so much more grief than they could have imagined. So really, how surprising was it when the sixth episode ended with a somber cover of "Never Let Me Down Again"?

I have it on good authority (aka personal experience) that anyone who watches this show will never again make it through "Long Long Time" without needing a hefty kleenex box. Avoiding pain was never an option: Joel and Ellie live in a bleak world, where they've lost almost everyone, except for each other. Their journey across the country may have brought them closer together, but at least 50% of that boils down to shared trauma. Along the way, they've encountered so much more grief than they could have imagined. So really, how surprising was it when the sixth episode ended with a somber cover of "Never Let Me Down Again"?

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
HBO's "The Last of Us" closed out last week's episode with two heartbreaking deaths that underlined an ugly truth: No one is safe in the show's ruthless world. This incident leaves an indelible mark on Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who had finally found themselves opening up to people who navigated the apocalypse with gentleness, but this hope is prematurely (and rather cruelly) dashed. Episode 6 of the show, "Kin," which fast-forwards three months, takes a break from infected-centered action and offers a relatively safe space with the introduction of the Jackson commune. While this shift ignites complex emotions in Joel, who struggles with notions of inadequacy and the fear of loss, it also allows us a real glimpse into Ellie, who hides a wealth of emotions beneath her sarcastic snarkiness.

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
The latest episode of "The Last Of Us" is the most emotional thus far. Finally, Joel (Pedro Padcal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) have done the difficult work of tearing down their walls and addressing the emotionally wrought elephant in the room: their journey together is so much bigger than carting cargo across the country for Fireflies. They genuinely care about each other, and there's no point pretending they don't. In "Kin," they finally confront that connection and consider the future; Ellie wonders if her blood will successfully produce a cure; after suffering panic attacks, Joel fears he won't be able to protect her; Ellie worries that she'll once again be abandoned by a person she trusts; and Joel is haunted by the ghost of his daughter. It's the kind of episode that asks big,...

Tales of hardened, violent loners picking up lively, younger traveling companions are certainly having a moment. Whether it's "The Last of Us," "The Mandalorian," "The Witcher," or a movie like "The Gray Man," they seem to be every which way you turn in the world of streaming these days. It's nothing new, of course. Writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima helped shape the mold for these types of stories when they launched "Lone Wolf and Cub" in 1970. Even people who've never read their incredibly influential manga series (nor seen any of its adaptations in other media) know exactly what you mean when you describe something as having "Lone Wolf" vibes.
Speaking on the official podcast for "The Last of Us" season 1, episode 6, "Kin," co-creator Neil Druckmann talked a little about his own inspirations while directing the original Naughty Dog video game franchise that inspired HBO's widely acclaimed (and relentlessly feel-bad) post-apocalyptic prestige series.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 1, Episode 6, “Kin.”]
Across its first season, “The Last of Us” has told the story of people figuring out how to continue life after the unthinkable. Some of the HBO series’ core characters have devoted their lives to making sure that a massive global tragedy is less of an end than a new beginning. The context is different, but the newest episode “Kin” runs parallel to the last entry in director Jasmila Žbanić’s filmography, “Quo Vadis, Aida?”
That film details the events surrounding the July 1995 massacre at Srebrenica, which claimed the lives of 8,000 men and boys who lived in the town in what is now present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. The legacy of war, particularly the one that decimated her hometown of Sarajevo for much of the early half of the 1990s, is a subject that runs through much of Žbanić’s work. Ranging from films like “Quo Vadis, Aida?...

Truly, Pedro Pascal's dad powers know no bounds. Whether he's using them to elevate the film around him (like in "Prospect") or deploying them to act under a mask (as in "The Mandalorian"), the man can play a gruff, grumpy father or a stoic-loner-turned-adopted-parent with a heart of gold like nobody's business. Really, the only thing he's better at than playing laconic dads might be playing fast-talking, disapproving mothers.
While HBO's "The Last of Us" has yet to call upon Pascal to utilize that particular set of skills, it has nevertheless afforded him the chance to showcase his full range as an actor while still operating firmly in irascible dad mode. Yet, even after five episodes of dramatic storytelling ranging from bittersweet to devastating, few scenes have allowed Pascal to shine quite like a key moment in episode 6, "Kin.

As a massive fan of the original games, one of the more rewarding aspects of watching "The Last of Us" be retold in live action is seeing lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey add their own personal flair to our beloved pair, Joel and Ellie. On paper, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have kept the show extremely faithful to the original games, story, and characters. However, because Ramsey and Pascal were discouraged from playing the games before embodying their roles, they've been able to imbue their own subtle reinterpretations and trademarks into their performances.
Ramsey has consistently nailed it as Ellie, stealing every moment and dramatic beat of the series so far with a youthful pluckiness and emotional edge that is reminiscent of, but totally distinct from, Ashley Johnson's original motion-capture performance of the character.
