Back with a cracking mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon29 August 2021
Vera investigates the death of a builder, who's left on the memorial steps.

Most definitely yes! Vera is perfect for a Sunday night, and once again they present us with a cracking, intriguing, first rate episode, I thought it was an excellent start to the eleventh series.

I'm not sure about you, but I have missed this show more than anything, genuinely one of the best there is, question is, was it worth the long wait?

The acting as always was first rate, everyone played their part, in addition to the main cast, I thought Lorraine Ashbourne was great.

You can definitely spot the social distancing, credit to them for getting this made during a very difficult time, clearly made to work within a specific set of rules, there is some clever camera work here which tries hard to disguise it.

If you've not seen the clip of Phil and Holly with the surprising guest, it's worth a Google search, and very funny.

Definitely a fan of Mark's new look.

I definitely follow the show, but I can't go a day without reading about the future of this show, I know we can't have this and Endeavour forever, but as long as both are viable, I hope they carry on, we need both.

Great to see Vera back, 9/10.

A new favourite episode
dakjets13 April 2022
After a break due to a pandemic, Vera is ready for an 11th season. The new episodes are all of a high standard and will not disappoint fans. Of the new ones, this is the best, in my opinion. The plot stands out significantly, the story becomes exciting and not least something that is important for crime: the surprises we get. A good crime story should really get us involved and try to find out who the killer is. In this episode, the creators managed to surprise me greatly. Exciting and top crime. Let's hope it's a 12th season. Brenda Blethyn as Vera is still in top form, and the series holds up.

Collingwood Monument

Warning: Spoilers
Wonderful to see Vera back strong from worldwide events that have hit Northumbra, Newcastle and the rest of the world over the past two years.

This season 11 was intriguing for sure, and I kind of got whiplash because of all the suspects. The only one not under suspicion was the prosecutor.

Still, a worthy episode for sure and I'm thrilled Vera is back healthier than ever.

Breakfast

I loved the way Vera tossed her toast and the coffee she drank as she left her house for the city.

nicely done, but the formula needs tuning
mgl-9203731 August 2021
The acting was particularly good in this episode. My interest was kept until the end. The problem for me is that the episodes too often follow the formula of turning suspicion on lots of people in succession, only to finally find the real murderer is the last one. There are other ways to keep the audience interested. Compared to the pluses of the acting and scenery I still find Vera worth watching.

Interesting episode

Warning: Spoilers
Well now we know why Vera is always the last one to show up. She is coming from her home which is far away and has to wait for the tide to be just right.

The story was good. However, certain parts did not flow so well. The story about how the windshield got shattered was told in 2 different ways. Why would the guy who died bring up the "fig tree" restaurant to Doug?

Boy one could really see the social distancing that was happening there. And boy does Mark ever looks good!

Loving the series overall
pctekmcs-749485 January 2024
Only a few episodes I found a bit of a drag. On the whole it's great.

One thing, I know it's fiction, but really? Why must the sidekick, on being presented with a likely suspect immediately decide that's it, done and dusted, esp if a criminal background, we'll stop looking further now.

Then again, maybe that is true to life.

This wasn't my fav episode, gets a bit tiring having the aha, it's them, no hang on, it's that one and oh yeah last minute, after staring at the table for a bit, yes, that one did this thing I just now thought about some more, jump in the LR and... and they all confess, great long stories and sobbing or growling...no-one ever clams up at the end. Unlike real life. Nor are some of them murder. Manslaughter perhaps. Cops do charge people with that too.

Is Vera Really Back?
wardmaryelaine6 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was thrilled to learn season 11 was ready for release, so I was excited to be able to view Episode 1: Witness

I'm not going to do a plot review, you can find that elsewhere readily enough. This episode is just missing what I've loved about Vera Series. That it's not just about solving a tricky murder. It's also about the relationships between Vera and other supporting cast members. .

I found this episode sorely wanting in this respect. In the past, Vera has found herself becoming increasingly involved in the personal and family life of DS Aiden Healy. (Kenny Doughty). No so this time! Here we find DS Healy spending nights sleeping at the station due to some unexplained marital issue. Vera responds with a few token adages. No tension is built nor any real sense of feeling You have to wonder why this was even included, unless the writers now consider it part of the script recipe. (Sigh) In fact, the Healy character doesn't even play a really useful role anywhere in this episode.

Another point, twists and turns regarding suspects, which I've come to expect. However, this time, the twists felt very contrived. "Let's have 'em think this guy's guilty, ok, now twist again, she's the one! It's just TWIST for twist's sake, Even the character's dialog seems to be inconsistent with the turns -- like even they don't believe it.

And finally, when we do find out who committed the murder, we are left rather stunned. Because nothing we've been led to believe about this character can support the particularly violent brutality of the crime. Come on, now...the script writing should include audience believability! You know, the ah-hah! Moment.

Ok, these are just a few sore points, definitely won't stop me from watching Episode 2. I just hope this episode was an anomaly -- the series will revert to it's higher standard of writing expected from this series.

Witness
Prismark1010 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Witness is the first episode of the eleventh series of Vera.

The suspects mount up quickly after Jim Turnbull is killed late at night on the steps of the Collingwood Monument in Tynemouth.

Turnbull was due to give evidence in court. He saw a promising young footballer beat up another man and leave him with serious injuries.

The footballer's brother seems to be the sort who might have intimidated witnesses. However they all seem to have alibis for the night of Turnbull's death.

Vera then thinks Turnbull had second thoughts about giving evidence in court. Maybe the injured man's family might have intended to harm Turnbull.

When Turnbull's son is later hospitalised. Vera looks closely into the dead man's estranged wife.

I thought at one point, half the people in the north east were going to be hauled into the police station.

If it was not for that ring found inside the throat of Turnbull. It might have happened!

The ring is the key. It had to be as Vera eventually eventually finds the culprit. Maybe that was a bit too convenient, a silly thing for the killer to do.

Until then this was a complex story and a good one. The young footballer's family were too obvious to be the killers. Maybe Vera and her team should had probed more just what kind of guy Turnbull was and if he did turn violent.

Strictly By The Numbers Episode
jcoffee022 March 2022
It's as if this season opener was deliberately stripped of any of the charm for which the series is renowned. The focus was purely on the case at hand with Vera tromping toward one red herring after another. There was no development provided for any of the other characters; in fact, it resembled an episode of. The Closer: a squad room of detectives scratching their asses, providing random updates as if they're expecting a gold star from their boss, and asking dull-witted questions which Vera duly answers. I felt embarrassed for the supporting cast. Hope it improves.
