Gotham doesn't know fear, it only knows Terror.
generalparadox26 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was an overall great episode, the acting throughout this episode was PHENOMENAL, especially from Curran Walters aswell as Vincent Kartheiser and Iain Glen.

This episode cover the details of how Jason was driven down the path to death and how Red Hood was born in his shadow. And it was all due to Scarecrow. It's fairly obvious now that Scarecrow is set up to be the main villain of this season which I'm ALL for. I want more of Gotham, more of Crane and more of this story.

Opinions:

I don't yet know how I feel about Jason NOT being Red Hood, but more like Scarecrow poisoning him to be. It's original for sure but it doesn't really stay true to the original Red Hood in my opinion. Jason didn't go after the Joker to save his mother, he went after him to prove himself to Bruce. Which fits this story and his character.

This episode also (kind of) explained why Bruce killed the Joker. But it didn't really explain how he BURRIED Jason, yet the burial isn't shown here, nor is how he got out of the grave. Which must mean Bruce lied about the burial. But that wasn't explored at all, wemre just left to assume that.

I think the episode ended on a very strange note, setting up ANOTHER flashback episode. I do wish it spent more time to develope Red Hood at the end but I feel everything was mapped out rather well.

Overall it's a very enjoyable episode that developes Jason and his motivations SO MUCH. I would have ti give this episode a 8.5/10, which is closer to a 9 than an 8. I need more of this story to properly judge this episode but as a standalone it's an 8.5 for me.

"You Shouldn't Fear Dick"
Gislef4 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Although Nightwing isn't in this episode except via archive footage, it's still a Bat Family story. It's just that this part of the story is about Jason and Bruce. We get Leslie Thompkins, remodeled as a therapist rather than a doctor. It's still hard to imagine Iain Glen as Batman, but he make a good Bruce Wayne and that's all he's called on to do.

I'm still not impressed by Red Hood versus the Titans. It seems like Starfire and Superboy could easily take Red Hood down... so they're kept busy on minor subplots while Nightwing goes up against Red Hood.

Which is fine, except the show is called 'Titans'. Not 'Nightwing and His Amazing Friends'. Let's see some Titan action. I'd rather find out more about Beast Boy. Or Starfire. Or Superboy. Then spend half a season on Nightwing's woes, and a full episode on how Jason became Red Hood. Especially when the series keep hitting the same beats. "Red Hood is a toughie"... except he isn't. "Jason had a bad life, partially because he was raised by a poor father figure." Got that last season: do we need to have that reiterated now?

I'm also having trouble with this pot-smoking dancing, Jonathan Crane. It's a good performance: it just seems called in from some other show.

So overall the episode is okay and connects a few dots between Robin the former Titan, and Red Hood arch-nemesis of the Titans. But I feel like I'm watching the 'Red Hood Show', not 'Titans'. We didn't get this much back story on Trigon or Deathstroke: why are we getting it on Red Hood? Jason wasn't that integral to the show during Season 2.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Not buying Kartheiser as Scarecrow
marc_baker128 August 2021
Maybe it's just me and my Peter Campbell bias but when he dances in an attempt to channel Nic Cage or Ted Levine, it just looks like awkward 8th grade first dance dancing. There's no menace or edge too him. Just a one-note miscast bearded man in a jumpsuit.

Love the show. Unlike some commenters, I'm fine with the show diverging from established canon. Just tell a good story.

With impressive direction and acting, but also some of the best writing of the show - Lazarus is an episode made for Batman fans
Holt34426 August 2021
"Lazarus" follows the aftermath of the previous episode which saw Dick Grayson taking Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow out to forest and getting answers, the other storyline had Starfire and Gar find Blackfire and break her out of a prison cell. But episode 3.05 is told through flashbacks and follows Jason Todd as he experiences nightmares involving Donna. Bruce responds by having Jason receive therapy sessions from Dr. Leslie Tompkins, a former colleague of Crane. When Jason learns that Bruce intends to remove him as Robin, he begins helping Crane in exchange for a drug that will eliminate his fear. There's lots of Easter eggs and callbacks, I personally found "Lazarus" to be an excellent use of storytelling, the writers did a terrific job in terms of the dialogue and overall writing, the attention to detail is what made me enjoy it fully. Krista Bridges gets introduced as Dr. Leslie Tompkins, a very important character in the Batman mythology. I love how they have gone into the psychology of being a vigilante and especially Batman and his proteges, it makes for some interesting and original storytelling, branching out from the usual.

Boris Mojsovski took up the position of both cinematographer and director, normally just the cinematography. I have continued to praise the cinematography since the first season, he's actually a great director too. There's some truly phenomenal acting in this episode, Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne and Curran Walters as Jason Todd, their performances alone are a reason why I loved this episode. I know from other roles that Iain Glen is a terrific actor but seeing him as Bruce Wayne in this season have been incredible, Curran Walters though he have grown as an actor and possibly given the best performance of his career to this date in these 45 minutes. The episode is full of excellent drama and scenes so memorable. Vincent Kartheiser continues to do Dr. Jonathan Crane justice, another terrific performance. I also want to praise the editing and pacing of the episode, it's what the previous episode lacked, everything is great and so is the choice of music plus the score.

Comic Book writer Bryan Edward Hill penned the script for "Lazarus" and he knows the characters and Batman mythology so well, that's how it should be and I'm grateful they picked him. Boris Mojsovski, the director and cinematographer, he deserves a lot of praise. Episode 3.05 was among the best episodes of this season and possibly the entire show.

Perfect Flashback
ajmoviereviews26 August 2021
I love this episode from start to finish, the goal wasn't to redeem Jason it was always so why he did what he did I understood that, and all the Todd and Bruce were phenomenal. You're gonna love all the Easter Eggs In this episode too, this was a great episode.

Finally a decent one
Riddler9126 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As a character study, this was a good episode, Hill knows how to write Jason, he wrote all the best episodes with him in this show. He managed to create a powerful story that makes sense (kinda) in the context of Jason's betrayal. I keep my opinion that the show tends to exaggerate Jason's inaptitude, the scene with him and the guy who kidnapped kids shouldn't happen to a Robin but at least the story was half-decent.

That being said, it had its flaws and they're worth mentioning. I cringed at some lines that it hurt me inside. "He's brown so the cops don't care about him"? "Batman protects rich people"? Disgusting, I expected better from Bryan Edward Hill. He isn't usually a race-baiter but I guess he got with the program recently and where the hell does this idea that Batman fights for the rich comes from? It really isn't the case but this show goes out of its way to make Batman a jerk. Also, how is there a Lazarus pit in Gotham that Batman doesn't know about but Scarecrow does? That doesn't make a lot of sense now, does it? And I would have done without the brainwashing angle, that's pretty cheap. And without the overuse of stupid music but that's par for the course for Titans by now.

All in all the best episode so far so expect the next one to be about Blackfire's backstory or something else no one asked for, it's the habit of this show to come up with a bad episode after a good one.

rkbblogger27 August 2021
To be fully honest I really wasn't sure about a flashback episode almost half way through the season which pre dated past the opening episode for the season but it was great such an amazing back story for my favourite dc character of all time Red hood is super dope the costume is really growing on me also the music choices and camera angles used in this episode were very well chosen and helped keep the tone of the episode for its full run time this seasons very good so far 🔥

This guy has been a breath of fresh air for the season. I have enjoyed his scenes. This was a great episode - nice acting chops coming from Mad Men.

Just inhale!
cjonesas25 January 2022
Episode 5: A semi-interesting developing episode featuring a young Jason who doesn't fit at all in his role. Not his fault; Writers fault. It lacks real suspense, thrill, Titan logic (non existent) and is a solo episode of its own, which is not good IMO and doesn't serve the season.

The whole Jason, Joker c#%@ is lame and boring and it reflects badly on the season.

This is a real good origin story in a classic Batman style.
marianciobanuz10 September 2021
I like the Red Hood's origin story, and even if it is a little different from what we know ,which is not a bad thing,it is made in a true psychedelic style, like the ones from the movies and the animated series and to me that thing is fascinating even now , after decades.

Interesting reference
simbrubie12 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Probably only older generations will recognise that Scarecrow is playing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida from Iron Butterfly from "Manhunter" by Michael Mann (1986) while explaining to Jason Todd that he has been resurrected.

In that film, a serial killer makes a suit out of pieces of his victims' skin that is supposed to make him immortal.

A nice allusion from one psycho to another.
