Very few filmmakers have the distinction of creating a classic on their first effort. But John Huston, one of the greatest screenwriters and directors of the 20th century, did just that in 1941 with “The Maltese Falcon” and went on to create many classics by inventing, reinventing and reinvigorating genres.
Huston was born on August 5, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri. His father was the great actor Walter Huston, and young John developed an interest in the stage at a young age watching his father perform in vaudeville. He was a sickly child with an enlarged heart and kidney ailments but eventually overcame that to drop out of school at the age of 14 to become a professional boxer.
As a young adult, Huston wrote and sold several short stories, and made his way to Hollywood when “talking pictures” created a demand for writers. He took a short hiatus from Hollywood after the car he...

Original Metallica bassist Ron McGovney recently offered praise to a former bandmate while tweeting about the legendary metal act’s early demo No Life ‘Til Leather: “Dave Mustaine just kills it on this tape … He leaves the rest of us in the dust.”
Although both McGovney and Mustaine never played on a proper Metallica album, the latter’s name did appear in the writing credits for several tracks on their first two records.
During our recent chat with the Megadeth frontman about his signature Gibson Collection (enter a giveaway for a Kramer or Epiphone guitar below), Mustaine returned kind words to McGovney.
“Well, I’ve always loved Ron,” Mustaine said. “And I was pretty vocal about how I felt when we would come home from the Bay Area, James and Lars would always pick on Ron. … And it made me resent James [Hetfield] and Lars [Ulrich]. They’re drinking vodka from a...

Watch the Short Film Centigrade: "In anticipation of a Feature Length Version, Colin Cunningham’s Centigrade is celebrating its Rerelease exclusively at Centigrademovie.Com.
Starring Colin Cunningham the film depicts the dark events surrounding the day that
‘karma’ rolls into town. Centigrade garnered more than a dozen ‘Best of’ Awards and Nominations and ended up making the short list for an Academy Award Nomination.
Now, the multi-award-winning short film (one of the most successful in iTunes history) is ready to take the leap forward as a major motion picture. Only this time, they’re doing things a little differently.
"The project had actually been optioned by MGM as a TV show,” says Cunningham. “But restructuring at the studio sent it into turn-around. So, now, we’re going straight to the fans.”

Blu ray
Warner Archive
1945 / 1.33:1 / 72 min.
Starring Boris Karloff, Ellen Drew, Katherine Emery
Cinematography by Jack MacKenzie
Directed by Mark Robson
The Swiss symbolist Arnold Böcklin produced several versions of Isle of the Dead in the late 1800’s—none of them suggested a typical tourist attraction but more than a few artists used that gloomy seascape as a port of inspiration; Rachmaninov composed a symphony, Dalí produced a surrealist tribute, and Strindberg sketched the fragments of a play, Toten-Insel. There’s even a hint of the painting’s portentous cliffs in Welles’ Xanadu. In 1945, Val Lewton, Mr. Dark Shadows himself, conceived an entire film built around Böcklin’s haunted island.

The fifth and final film in Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” series is memorable for early career appearances by Liam Neeson and Jim Carrey. Directed by Buddy Van Horn whose remarkably long and action-packed career as a stunt man (beginning in 1951 with the Byron Haskin western Warpath) was sidetracked by three directorial jobs for Eastwood, including The Dead Pool, Pink Cadillac, and Any Which Way You Can. Versatile cinematographer Jack Green went on to provide the uniquely noirish western look for Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Unforgiven.

In reimagining one’s history, you suspect your role in the proceedings. If you’re American, you put yourself in the heart of the battle, at the Constitutional Convention, and (hopefully) fighting for the northern states during the Civil War. The more you learn, the easier it becomes to question what you’ve heard in the past, raising more questions than answers. You begin to see the age-old phrase in motion, “History repeats itself.”
For the Haitian, French, and UK theatre troupe The Living and the Dead Ensemble, their project started with Toussaint L’Ouverture, a man known as the “Father of Haiti” for his role in the revolution after being born a slave. In Ouvertures, a documentary from troupe members Louis Henderson and Olivier Marboeuf, the actors and poets wander around Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince, translating and rehearsing a Creole version of Édouard Glissant’s play Monsieur Toussaint.

The complicated and often ugly relationship between punk rock and racism has provided ample material for musicians, academics, and filmmakers alike. From the lyrics of The Dead Kennedys to Shane Meadows’ This is England, the genre of music has repeatedly tried to confront its unfortunate associations with white supremacy. White Riot captures a key moment in that confrontation, charting the foundation of Rock Against Racism up to its 100,000-man march against the Nazi League in 1978. A march that culminated in an open-air concert featuring the likes of X-Ray Spex, Steel Pulse and of course The Clash, playing their titular hit.

Vision Films has debuted the first trailer for action thriller ‘Sos Survive or Sacrifice’ featuring William Baldwin.
When Kate (Jeannine Kaspar) and her 13-year old little sister Liz (Kseniya Pinch) are reunited on the Mediterranean island Cyprus, Kate meets Myrianthy (Marianna Rosset) and with a group of locals agrees to an exciting ride in a hot air balloon.
The joyride takes a dangerous turn when it becomes untethered and the passengers ascend without a pilot. Their cell phones out of range and the balloon running out of gas, Kate and Myrianthy begin a desperate fight for their lives as the balloon is pushed out over the open ocean. Back on land, Liz has become an unwanted “material witness” to a robbery committed by Jack (William Baldwin) who happens to be Myrianthy’s boyfriend. Matters take a dramatic twist, one that will mark their lives forever. While Liz may be their only hope of rescue,...

The Locarno Film Festival is reinventing itself due to the coronavirus crisis by launching a plan B called Locarno 2020 — For the Future of Films, its core philosophy being to support global indie film directors hard hit by the pandemic as they toiled to bring their projects to the big screen.
“In April we were looking at a lot of different scenarios of what the festival could be,” says Lili Hinstin, artistic director of the Swiss event held in a lakeside town under the Alps in the Italian-speaking portion of Switzerland. Fest has long been a top notch haven for global auteurs. But the Swiss government didn’t want to take any chances with a physical edition Aug. 5-15.
Hinstin and her team felt that opting for the online festival route would go against the spirit of Locarno, known for packed nightly open-air screenings in its 8,000-seat Piazza Grande arena. So...

New works by prominent auteurs Lucrecia Martel, Lav Diaz, Lisandro Alonso and Wang Bing grace the lineup of works-in-progress unveiled by the Locarno Film Festival.
The canceled Swiss fest dedicated to indie cinema on Thursday announced 20 titles that made the cut for its innovative The Films After Tomorrow initiative that will provide support to filmmakers forced to stop working due to the global pandemic. Of these, 10 are international and 10 from Switzerland. Prizes will be awarded by juries made up by still unspecified filmmakers on Aug. 15.
“Our role is to act as a link between films, the industry and audiences, and so (when Locarno was canceled due to coronavirus concerns) we looked at alternative ways of carrying out that mission, assessing where our intervention could be most useful at this time,” said Locarno artistic director Lili Hinstin at a Zoom presentation during the Cannes Virtual Market. The horrors of reality manifest when Fred confronts his ultimate fear: Fanny is the better storyteller. Chris Redd co-stars.
Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona had its world premiere in the Venice Days sidebar at the Venice Film Festival and then played Toronto. It is making its U.

Cas is back!
On Supernatural Season 15 Episode 6, Cas showed that the old Cas everyone loves just needed a mini vacation to come back full force.
He was brutal. And now he's ready for action.
This is going to be good.
Where Cas was or what he was doing is anyone's guess, but he showed up and took care of business.
It was odd, for sure, but at least it appears he's going to be useful in Sam and Dean's battle with Chuck.
Why he chose to show up in that little town to take on a djinn is curious. There was no explanation.
Maybe he investigated the news on his own. Maybe he had a "feeling."
At least when he called Dean, his former best buddy didn't completely break his balls as he could have.
Whatever the reason, Cas is back, and that's all that matters.
The only concern is...

How the hell are they supposed to fight God, indeed!
Sam and Dean found themselves in a precarious situation on Supernatural Season 15 Episode 5 when God decided to play a few games (and bring back an old foe) to get the gun.
God needs to spend some time in the naughty corner -- after a good spanking or two.
So, I looked up Proverbs 17:3.
This is from the King James Version of the Bible:
"The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts."
I'm not a Biblical scholar, so I had to do a little more research on the meaning to make sure it was in line with what I was thinking.

An indigenous teenager falls ill when he resists tribal duties and his destiny as a shaman in João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora’s ethnographically sincere “The Dead and the Others.” Handsomely shot on 16mm to draw out the region’s warm organic tones, the film is an admirable, often fascinating fictionalized portrait of the Krahô people of Brazil’s north-central state of Tocantins and their fight to preserve traditions too easily watered-down by contact with the outside world. A major problem however is that the directors, who don’t speak Krahô, had their nonprofessional performers improvise their lines, giving far more space to exposition than their amateur acting can bear. Less dialogue and greater reliance on conveying information visually would have distinguished “The Dead” from other indigenous fiction, though Un Certain Regard’s special jury prize ensures a modest festival life.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo screens at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater this weekend as part of their Classic Film Series. It’s Saturday, March 11th at 10:30am at the Hi-Pointe located at 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117. The film will be introduced by Harry Hamm, movie reviewer for Kmox. Admission is only $5
This gives us a perfect excuse to re-run this top ten list so here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are Alfred Hitchcock’s ten best films:
Frenzy
Frenzy, Hitchcock’s next to last feature film from 1972, represented a homecoming of sorts since it was the first film completely shot in his native England since his silents and early ” talkies ” in the 1930’s. By dipping into the then somewhat new territory of serial killers, he took full advantage of the new cinema freedoms and truly earned his ‘ R ‘ MPAA rating.

"It will be difficult to continue this story of mine. I don't even know if it is a story. One of the few true visionary risk-takers of cinema has yet again found a subject fitting for his boundless energy, Witold Gombrowicz's mental madcap 1965 novel Cosmos. For those familiar with Żuławski's films like Possession, On the Silver Globe and L'amour braque, it may come as a surprise that the assaultive quality of the novel's streaming consciousness–poring over a young man's vacation in a small town boarding house, where he seems to discover conspiracies of small crimes...

Howard and John Ford’s The Dead 2: India is a sequel to their previous Africa-set zombie flick; and to be honest, it’s the most auspicious of sequels… A zombie epidemic reaches the Asian subcontinent and American engineer Nicholas (Joseph Millson) attempts to trek 300 miles across stunning but deadly rural Indian landscapes to reunite with his Indian girlfriend Ishani (Meenu Mishra), aided only by plucky orphan boy Javed (Anand Gopal).
I didn’t catch The Dead, so the novelty of watching a Zombie film set anywhere other than Middle America (or Crouch End) was not lost on me…
The various locations around rural India are occasionally used rather well. Nicolas’s introductory scene is a slow pull out from extreme close up...

A number of years ago, before "The Walking Dead" was a huge thing and zombies were just coming to the forefront of popular culture, the Ford Brothers released a movie that brought something new to a, then already tired, genre. The Dead (review) was a success which the directors followed up with a sequel and now Howard Ford is stepping out with his own project Never Let Go.
Starring Angela Dixon, it's the story of a single mother who takes the law into her own hands when her child is kidnapped. It looks and sounds a little like a mix between Taken and one of the Bourne movies, complete with exotic setting and the suggestion of political intrigue, and that's perfectly great [Continued ...]...

A few years ago, we were vocal about our concerns for a movie titled "The Dead" - or as I titled it the "Zombies In Africa" project, co-directed by brothers Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford (Americans), shot entirely on location in mostly Burkina Faso and Ghana, and was described as “a powerful story of one man’s struggle to survive in extreme circumstances all the while battling against a menacing threat all around him!” An American mercenary, the sole survivor of a plane crash, travels across continental Africa, battling the living dead, joining forces with a local military man, who is desperately searching for...

Howard J. Ford’s latest feature stars Angela Dixon as a single mother whose daughter is abducted whilst on holiday.
Child abduction thriller Never Let Go has wrapped production having shot in Morocco, Spain, Us and the UK.
Directed by Howard J. Ford (who co-directed and co-wrote The Dead and The Dead 2: India with his brother Jonathan Ford), the film stars Angela Dixon as a single mother who finds herself in a race against time when her daughter is abducted whilst on holiday.
Ford, who also wrote the film, commented: “I want to take audiences on a very believable but nerve shredding journey that throws them into the visceral plight that is the worst fear of parents everywhere.”
A teaser for the film will be unveiled at Berlinale 2015 and will be ready for delivery ahead of Cannes. World rights are currently available via Latitude Films UK Ltd.

We’re excited to have The Dead 2‘s Meenu Mishra take part in the latest installment of our Q&A series, telling us about her experience working with Howard and Jonathan Ford on their zombie sequel:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Prior to being cast in The Dead 2, were you familiar with The Dead? Had you seen many or any zombie movies?
Meenu Mishra: Frankly speaking, I don’t watch many movies and I don’t watch English movies, so I was not familiar with The Dead. When Howard came to the audition, he told me about the story of The Dead and I really want to thank Howard for selecting me for this.
There are not too many Indian horror movies or zombie movies. What attracted you to this role?

Recently arriving on Blu-ray and DVD in the Us and coming soon to UK TV is The Dead 2, Howard and Jonathan Ford’s follow up to the 2010 African zombie movie. Now shifting focus to a new set of characters in India, the new location provided its own set of rewards and challenges, which The Ford Brothers spoke about during a recent interview:
How do you two write? For example, does one pace the floor whilst the other types?
Jon: Ha, that’s funny! You hit the nail on the head! Normally you will find Howard frantically writing away while I pace the room acting out the scenarios and shouting the lines like some demented theatre actor on steroids. The writing stage is one phase of the project where we work together very well. We are almost never in conflict with each other, each jumping in where the other got to...

Meanwhile, American turbine engineer Nicholas Burton (Joseph Millson, Casino Royale) is working in the stark yet tranquil Indian countryside when he receives a call from his love Ishani (Meenu), a local girl who lives on the outskirts of the slums of Mumbai and who has hidden their relationship from her tradition-minded father. When the Ford Brothers made their highly unusual zombie movie The Dead and shot it on location in Africa on 35mm film, they made quite a splash in the bloodbath. Reviews were gushing, and so was fan response. Naturally a sequel is heading our way, in two weeks to be exact!
This time around it’s set in India, and again the Fords, co-writers/co-directors Howard and Jon, shot on location and used locals and local actors in naturalistic settings.
The story follows a migrant American worker who is desperately struggling to get from the barren boonies into Mumbai, where his pregnant Hindi girlfriend waits, while everyone else is trying to run from the zombie plague in the opposite direction.
If you think the terrain looks dangerous and the people a little scary… it’s because they were! As the Brits were filming their movie, they were under constant harassment.
