a glimmer of light that things might kick off again but not perfect

I found the new red dwarf film/short series Funny yet however disappointing as it swerved off from its low budget BBC roots onto Dave. Sure the new computer animated graphics were impressive in all 3 episodes yet i found characters especially in the first episode isolated from each other as the sets seemed too large and glossy. The plot wasn't perfect but it was better than the ones in the last few episodes created. I gave the show a score of 8 in truth because i had been dying to see a new R.D episode, and fingers crossed if the viewings were high the cast might be persuaded to create another great "long" series. If the production crew read this i would advise them to get back onto the BBC CAUSE THE ADVERTS ON DAVE WERE EVERY 8 MINUTES :(.Plus with a lower budget i believe on BBC the producers can become more creative with the scenes and avoid pointless unfunny characters like that CGI robot in the first episode.

10 years waiting for a rehashed plot?

Warning: Spoilers
I loved the original series. I have to say that this 3 part update was a bit disappointing. The acting and the gags were more or less up to the previous standard, but the plot...well, they admitted it was nicked from Blade Runner (in my view, second only to Perfect Storm as the worst ever film), and it was obviously referencing the despair squid, but there was also a Life on Mars element to it. Sadly, though, nothing really new, and nothing particularly Red Dwarfish about it. A disappointing lack of Holly too, and presumably we're supposed to have forgotten what happened at the end of the previous series. Worth watching but not perhaps as good as it should have been.

Saved the 3 parter.

I actually think this wrapped it up quite nicely in the end. Definately think the nerdy collecter that the comic book store guy phoned should have turned out to be Holly/Norm. But still good to get a cameo from Chloe Annett who ages like fine wine, always had a crush on her in the 90s.

Part three rescued it completely
izokial14 April 2009
I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, so let's just say part three concludes this mini-series brilliantly.

I watched part 1 and sat there going "Eh... not that funny, sorry guys." Then I watched part 2 and was like "OK... OK... So, uh, you're going with movie references, Family Guy style?" There were some excellent quotes in both episodes, though. Then part 3 completely redeemed it.

Acting's good, plot's interesting and it feels much more mature. I'd definitely say it's better than a lot of what Series 8 had to offer.

As for breaking the whole affair into three episodes, it probably wasn't the best idea, but it's being released on DVD so we'll all be able to watch it as intended.

Oh, one last thing: SO glad they ditched the laugh track! There just aren't enough jokes in the show for that to be a good idea; lots of serious moments.

Back to Earth: Too many plots and references for too few laughs
bob the moo4 May 2009
The return of Red Dwarf has been discussed frequently for many, many years. A feature-length film was the usual rumour but eventually TV channel Dave put its hand in its pocket and decided to bring it together for a three-part special which was screened over three nights on Easter weekend in the UK. I watched it as someone who used to watch it while I was a teenager but not a massive fan or someone who owns the DVD's etc – essentially what I am saying is that I came to the specials without some geeky fascination or fan-boy attention to detail or with an unreasonable expectation built on some nostalgic view of how good RD may or may not have been. All I wanted was to be entertained.

So the changes made, presence of advert breaks, lack of laughter track etc didn't really offer me any fundamental concerns so much as the "real" problems in it. And there are plenty of problems to pick from, and they are so connected that it is hard to know where to start in this review. I supposed the biggest thing is the simple lack of laughs. I think I laughed about three times total across the three episodes, which is a pretty poor return. I'm not suggesting that Red Dwarf was ever the greatest comedy ever, but I certainly remember it being entertaining and pretty funny – this was not the case here. It is not even that the jokes fell flat so much as there being surprisingly few jokes to laugh at. Instead we got handed two things – plots and references.

The plot in itself is not a bad idea and is certainly not something that hasn't been done before in different ways in other films and shows. Problem is that it is not done in a clever or interesting way but rather just, well, done and left at that. Everything is laboured as it goes and it seemed to be that there was too much narrative exposition and not enough comedy. The more annoying aspect though was just how self-referential this aspect of the special made it – although again this as a concept is not a problem. As a concept it should produce more comedy and also play well to those familiar with the show. In reality it doesn't do this and instead we get more dry moments that seem to be more to do with the plot than the comedy, which does make it feel duller than it should have been. On top of this we get loads of Blade Runner references – loads, and again none of them are actually funny. The heavy, endless use of this is sort of justified in the final episode and is perhaps a mark in the ground for fans but this is not the same as the references working within the specials – they may be justified but they certainly don't work and just feel like they have been done whether they work or not.

The cast are pretty good in it though and time hasn't changed them that much. They certainly seem up for it and none of them appear to be sleeping through it, it is just the material that means they can do very little. I mean, at risk of repeating my point, this is a show that takes Lister into the Coronation Street world of Craig Charles the rehabbing actor but yet fails to make it funny, far less sharp or clever. It is a real shame that such a heralded return turned out to be such a pointless affair. I'm sure there will be fans just happy for new episodes regardless of quality but for me I have to call it like I see it. Poor writing; far too few joke; even fewer laughs; nothing clever or engaging – I could go on. The end result is a dry and pointless few episodes that must have boosted Dave's viewing figures but did little else.

Another disappointing episode

Warning: Spoilers
Yet again the writing talent of Doug Naylor just aren't up to the task, I correctly predicted the general story arc within the first few minutes ... having seen the guys all covered with squid ink, it was pretty obvious especially after Doug showed his penchant for re-hashing tired old ideas with the luck virus etc in the last series. I hope that the guys will go back to their roots and work together on any future Red Dwarf projects, maybe the producers will look out for some fan-fiction instead, I'm sure as abysmal as some fan-fiction can be, there can't be much that's worse than what's just been on TV. Please come back Rob, you are sorely missed!!

Back to Earth (Part Three)

Warning: Spoilers
I really don't understand the hatred these episodes get, it's like the Star Wars Prequels all over again, both this series and the Prequels are excellent, the first episode of BtE was a little bit odd, it wasn't the best granted, the second episode was far better and this one equally so, it's really not that bad, it's a departure from normal Red Dwarfyness but it's just a bit of fun so why hate it so much.

How to kill a once great show.
k-sheldrake14 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
As a long-time fan of Red dwarf (I discovered it at the start of Series 2 as a school-kid), I was a little reluctant to watch the Dave miniseries after the frankly terrible series' 7 and 8, though sheer curiosity made me tune in. It started well... However, the frankly nonsensical plotting and a complete absence of funny lines that plagued the last 2 series were frankly too much to bear. What made the series enjoyable in the 1st place – 4 guys alone in space bickering and getting into funny adventures – has once again being spoilt, this time in favour of a "Last Action Hero" meets "New Nightmare"-style existential musing on fictitious characters meeting their makers. Changing the familiar and essential Red Dwarf setting in favour of the "real world" was bad enough (imagine for a moment if Titanic was set mainly on land). However, the logic-defying plot shifts and worse, the utterly baffling spoof/homage to Blade Runner was the absolute nadir of a once-great show. The final plot twist of ANOTHER suicide squid – a retread from a previous episode which was itself a reworking from the "Better Than Life" twist at the end of the 1st novel, is just lazy, sloppy writing. Red Dwarf used to be funny, entertaining and thought-provoking. This was boring, nonsensical, and the absolute opposite of entertainment. Please come back Rob Grant.

If There's Anything To Blame It's The Storyline
Inen19 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This Contains Spoilers. Read If You have Seen It.

Now, don't get me wrong, but I was looking forward to this special as much as any Red Dwarf fan, despite it being broadcast on a channel I don't like that much. This one-off special, that was split into 3 parts, made me give this an overall rating of 4/10. The missing laughter track, made the programme feel lifeless, but watching all 3 parts now I know why.

The first part, had some humour, with top notch CGI, but was let down when the monster turned out to be a stereotyped Russian hologram who then opens a portal to earth? Hmm, OK. The absence of Holly was also a let down, but that wasn't the least of my worries. Oh no, I was more worried if the next 2 parts would get better or worse. I would say this was the strongest of the 3, due to the fact that it was nice to see the 4 of them back together.

The second part is the weakest of the 3. The humour sloped to an all time low, I could count at least 3 funny gags (Dave's speech on toilet hand dryers, the Blade Runner homages, and Rimmer pushing that other hologram into a car), the kids on the bus talking to Dave about that channel made me cringe, and the whole "we're characters from a TV Show" agenda constantly reminded me of The League Of Gentlemen: Apocalypse. This made me NOT want to watch the last part, but I had to, just to see it pan out. If I wouldn't of watched it, I couldn't of wrote this review. Is that a bad thing?

Now, the third part is the second strongest out of the three. Now, the storyline kind of went back up, but straight back down again after finding out (in short) "it was all a dream." I really did like the typewriter idea and they should of stuck with it, but no, they went in a completely different direction. The other Blade Runner reference was quite a laugh, but in the end, it made the whole thing one big pile of mediocrity.

(Part 1 - 6/10) (Part 2 - 2/10) (Part 3 - 4/10)

Don't get me wrong, the humour was still Red Dwarf (although hit and miss in some places), and the CGI was top notch and spot on, but the whole storyline was messed up, confusing, and regardless if it's not linked up with Series 8, it was very weak, and just gave off the impression, that he's run out of ideas. Nevertheless, it does not make this a worthy effort of a revival.

Final Verdict: Mediocre, but don't take my word for it, make your own mind up.

(Overall Rating: 4/10)

What a load of smegging SHITE !!!
digiphorik13 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This was awful !! This actually made me angry to watch as I'm a big fan of red dwarf and I feel they didn't even try to make it live up to the old red Dwarf we all know and love.

To be honest the plot was OK, it needed a bit of hamming up but it was alright. The script however was absolute tripe. I found myself anxious and frowning whilst watching this.

1) It wasn't funny at all.

2) The acting was tired terrible from all the cast apart from Kryten.

3) The Scipt was lame & terrible.

4) The story constantly contradicted itself and no care was taken to make sure this wasn't the case.

4) The camera work was lazy.

5) The editing was so very sloppy and special effects were not needed.

6) The casting for all the other characters was SHITE !!! Infarct, the only good casting there was were the two kids on the bus. Their acting outdid all the rest of the cast !! It was a rubbish tired old disaster..!!! An insult to the series !! If they make more red dwarf they should watch the stuff they made in the 90's as thats when i feel red dwarf was at its best.

Spin on!

As boring as the video of rimmers death.....oh, spin on!

Why do these need to contain at least 150 characters?! Seems pointless to me! I'm trying to think up some rubbish to fill the space with!

It's Blade Runner

Warning: Spoilers
That's the joke.

If this was going to be a Red Dwarf send-off, this would have been pretty weak.

At the best, this whole mini-series would have been best as a single, condensed episode.
